I believe the Marr Family Home is now home to the Bartholomew County Historical Society. Message me and perhaps we can help each other.
Brian Aikens

brothers Burt and Buel (aka Robert) Aikens

Trying to find information on these 2 brothers - who were their parents, did they have other siblings, exactly what ethnicity were they?
The younger generations (ages 50 and under) were told that Robert was Irish and Cherokee. In the black and white picture I have he looks to be of mixed heritage.
Burt was born around 1879, married Ida Cleaveland on 11/22/1929 in Walhulla, SC by G.W.Smiley-CCP.
Buel was born around 1888 on January 25th, married Mamie Lomax 1925 in Anderson, SC. He died around 1956. Mamie died in 1970.
The name 'Aikens' seems to have gone thru spelling changes. On a copy of Burt and Ida's marriage certificate Burt's signature looks as if he spelled it 'Aikins'. On census reports showing Robert and the spelling used by my relatives it is spelled as 'Aikens'.

Hi I may have some information with reference to the Aikens family. From information I have, Alexander Aikens was married to a Hanna Gorley and they had about nine children Thomas, John, William, Frank (Francis), Harriet, Alexander, Margaret, Stanley and Gilbert.
Now comes the complicated bit Harriet was my grandmother she was married to Anthony Dixon Thompson, they had four boys Alexander Aikens Thompson ( my father) Gilbert Aikens Thompson, John Graham Thompson and Maurice Anthony Thompson. They seem to be named after Harriets brothers and have got Aikens as a middle name.
I remember going to see great uncle Frank as a child he had been an opera singer in his early years and had sung for film, dubed for some actor can’t remember something to do with gondoliers. He would have been in his mid to late seventies and was living in a little cottage in a small hamlet called Alonby on the Solway Firth near Maryport Cumberland the thing I always remember is a grand piano that filled the tiny front room. I also went to Stanley’s Funeral it was in Doncaster He had worked for GEC.
So the names seem to add up but the parents don’t have I got it wrong??
Can you give any more info if we are related I have some Family photos in the loft I will look them out?
Regards Graham Thompson
My great-grandfather was Alexander Aikens born in 1858 and he lived in Cumberland (Maryport, Ellenborough, Workington). I am looking for more information about his family, particularly his ancestors. I am wondering if he had other family (brothers, sisters, parents) in Cumberland. I'm also wondering if he changed his name from Aiken. The information I have is that both he and his wife Hannah Teresanov, were born in Scotland, but I haven't found anything additional about them. If you know anything more, I'd love to hear from you! I have some information about his children, at least two of whom emmigrated to the US.

Akins/Aikens/Aiken, Jackson County, GA, early 1900s

I am trying to trace a family that lived in Jackson County for at least 20 years, possibly more. I only have them so far on the 1930 census.

1930 Harrisburg, Jackson County, Georgia

Akins, James, 48, GA, GA, GA, farmer
Elise, 31, GA...
Dillard, 20, GA
Rufy (Rufus?), 18, GA
Henry G. (Grady), 16, GA
Emory E. (Edward), 14, GA
Woodroe, 11, GA
Claud, 10, GA
William J., 8, GA
Mary, 6, GA
James, 5, GA
Earnest R., 3, GA
Ruthie M., 1, GA

The line I'm researching comes through Dillard, who was born in March of 1910 in Jackson County, GA. He eventually settled in Rockdale County, GA, where he died in 1990. Henry Grady and Emory Edward were also born in Jackson County, GA, and also lived in Rockdale County until their deaths in 1965 and 1973, respectively.

Dillard's father was James Richard Akins/Aikens/Aiken, born about 1882 in Georgia. His mother was Sarah W. Simmons, also born in Georgia, although I don't know her birthdate. She died when Dillard was nine years old, according to Dillard's widow and granddaughter, which would put Sarah's death year around 1919, presumably in Jackson County. James then remarried about three months later to Elise. I understand that there might have been a bit of friction about his hasty remarriage among his children. James had several children with Elise, thus the large family listed in the 1930 census.

I appreciate any help in locating this family. Dillard's granddaughters are newbies at genealogy, I think, and are very interested in what can be found!

Thanks so much!

Lisa
Am looking for information on Isaac Aiken/Eaken born in VA. abt 1807 who married a Mahala b. 1810 in TN. They were in Monroe County Tenn in 1840, Meigs County Tenn in 1850 and eventually moved to Camden County MO between 1850 and 1860 where they lived for the remainder of their years (or so I believe). My GGGrandfather was their son Andrew J. Eakins of Meigs and Rhea County Tenn.

I am specifically looking for info regarding who Isaac Aiken's parents were and who Mahala's parents were. Isaac may possibly have brother's John, Sam, Isaac, and Thomas who were also residing in McMinn County Tenn in early 1830's.

I have a fairly complete history of Isaac and his lineage from 1807 to current time, but would like to go further back. If you can be of help I would certainly appreciate it and would be willing to share information.
Annie B. Weidman is a part of my line as well. This is how I am connected. Her husband John Luther Aikens'- father, John Robert Aikens and my great grandfather James Aikens were brothers. I have done several years of research on the family trying to find George Aikens' parents. I believe I have been in contact with someone from the John Luther family in the past. I also am a cousin of Brian Aikens whom I believe many of the family met a year or so ago when he came to the area with his father Ronald Aikens.I hope to come out to the area in June and hope I can meet many of the Aiken family at that time. I am terribly excited to see the area and meet family.

To your question - James Leonard Aikens my grandfather was married to Sylvia Howell Allen - but these Allen's came from Conn., so I don't believe these Allen's that are in the hymn book belong to my family.

I would love to learn about your interview with Annie B Aikens - I love family history. Would you mind sharing. I also would love to share anything I may have that may be of interest. Thanks!

Hello,

In 1985 we interviewed Annabelle Weidman Aikens, aka "Annie Aikens" of Gerrardstown, WV because she is a member of our family line.

We recently acquired a Weidman Lutheran Church hymn book published in 1857 and discovered it was also owned by a John Frederick ALLEN and Margaret Baird ALLEN? Are John and Margaret ALLEN part of your research?

My clue comes from your posting: John and Ann had a son named James William b 1 Mar 1860 md Minnie Bohe, their son Leonard James b 12 Apr 1899 md Sylvia Allen, their daughter LaVon Aikens b 14 Jul 1922 md Garth Fairbanks and I am their daughter. So George is my GGG Grandfather.

SHAW about 1897 and lived in Greene, Perry, and Forrest Counties in MS until about 1949 when she sold her remaining real estate and went to live with a sister. She had no children. I need any information about parents, siblings, and where she lived after 1949. I was born in the house in which the Shaws lived in the 1930s and my grandfather bought the largest portion of their farm in 1937. Will appreciate any help.

Dear Cousin Anthony

I know about your family because you are my mother’s half second cousin. Your great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Aikens, was the business manager of the printing and newspaper departments of the Evening Wisconsin newspaper. He originated the practice of printing country newspapers partly upon one side at a central office, with news and general advertisements, and then printing the rest at local offices with local news and advertisments. He was, indeed, quite wealthy. He had a first wife, Amanda Barnes, by whom he had three daughters. Two died without surviving children. The other, Stella Aikens, was my great grandmother. I know a great deal about your great grandfather. If you are interested, please send me your email address. Mine is asibert@btinternet.com.

Anne

Why yes, he was my great grandfather and great grandmother. I was told that they owned a large estate outside of Milwakee and owned the Milwakee Journal before his death. My great grandmother sold everything and moved to Nevada and invested most of our family estate in gold stock certificates. I believe she died in Nevada. Their only son was named Andrew Jackson Aikens also. He married my grandmother Elizabeth Jayne Lewis and theu eventually moved to Miami. They had my mother Gail and adopted my Uncle Steve.

How do you know about my family?

Tony

Looking for info on Lowrene Aikens of Oneida Co, NY, born c 1900, married Lester Short c 1920 (possibly in Camden). Their first child, Norman, was born in Jan 1921, but we have no record of the marriage.

Sorry, but Lowreen is the only Aikens I have, and I haven't seen any other in the census sheets. Nice to know that there were indeed other aikens in oneida Co at that time. He could be a cousin. I;ll let you know if I come up with anything.

I have been told by a distant cousin the Lydia Custer and Henry Clay Aikens children were split up to be raised.(Lewis,Pearl,Nelson,Lydia or Annie.Have been told by cousin that Lewis was raised by an Uncle Bailey. This may be correct as my gr gr grandfather John Bailey married Lydia Custer's sister Frances Elisabeth Custer daughter of Reuben and Anna Elisabeth Bain Custer. There are also Johnstons in this family. Does this sound familiar or have any connections to anyone.
Thanks, Deanne
