Hi Denise,

I just have joined and read your lines. We are Aiton's too and tried to find family, too. My mother is Madlaine Rosamond Aiton and the daughter of Joseph Aiton and Beathrice Mary Pearcy, who lived in Battle, Hastings in Sussex but are originally from Bridge of Allen in Scotland.
There is an Aiton Society who meet anually on Scotland- do you know of them?
We want to go this year (14th august) but cannot sadly but hope next year.
We live in Germany but at the moment we are in England in Dorset.
It would be great to be in touch and hope to hear from you soon.
Best,
Luise Breyer-Aiton (daughter of M.
Recently stumbled on your post. I am interested in this Aiton family through a connection to John Aiton's (b1866) maternal grandmother, Helen (Vallance) Irvine (b1816 in Dalmellington, Ayrshire), and thus, to his mother, Mary (Irvine) Aiton. I am decended from Helen Vallance's younger sister, Margaret (Vallance) Elliott who emigrated to Canada in the 1850s. Would be interested in sharing information.

Sincerely,
John Elliott

My husband's 5th greatgrandfather was David Aiton, born 1750 in St Vigeans Parish, Scotland. He married Ann Taylor Aug 10, 1774, Kirkden, Farforshire, Scotland. His son John David Eaton, born 1774 in Arbilot, Angus, Scotland, and died 1854 in Dunnichen, Farforshire, Scotland. I have the rest of the line leading to my husband, including Joseph I Eaton who settled in Deleware Co., NY, USA, in 1840s.

Do any of you have additional information on David Aiton and his parentage? Is anyone else connected to this family? I will be happy to share anything I have. Deborah

Our fathers name was Jack McLeod Aiton born Edinburgh 1934 died 1997.
I have very little detail of our family but what I do have is below:
Our father took his mothers surname name, her first name was Mary don’t know when or where she was born.
I believe my father had one younger sister Mary who immigrated to Newfoundland sometime in the 40's when she was 5 years old.
My father also had two bothers Ted and James, Ted who I believe is now deceased also immigrated at an early age to Labrador, James remained in the Edinburgh area.
Regards
Dave Aiton
Hi,
In my family my Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandfather was born Aiton, his son was born Eaton, married as Ayton and his children are born Ayton and their children ended up as Aytoun. They are all from the Midlothian area of Scotland.
As to persecution, it was back in the late 1600 to early 1700 that the Aitons of Fife were Jacobite followers and were persecuted for this.
Thomas Aiton of Fife fled to Holland to escape and generated a whole new familt line in Holland with the spelling Aitton.
The Aitons of Fife may have direct blood connections back to the royal Bruce family. I have an extensive database of history for that line.

Hi there fellow Aiton.

For your information~:
Aiton History
The name is variant of Ayton which derives from the lands of Ayton (the town on the river Eye) in Berwickshire. Steffan, son of Swan de CEitun granted a charter of the lands of Wytefeld to the Priory of Coldingham in 1170 or thereabouts. Dolfinus de eit' and HeI de eitun were witnesses to a charter by Waltheus, earl of Dunbar c 1166, and Elya de Eytone and Stephen de Eytona witnessed a charter by Patrick, 1st earl of Dunbar (1189-99).

In 1440, Mark of Aytoune, a merchant of Leith (near Edinburgh) had safe conduct to trade in England.
Andrew Athone was rector of Spot in 1527, and Andrew Athoun of Dunmur was a witness in 1549.

In the fifteenth century the lands of Ayton passed to George de Home, remaining in that family until 1716 when they were forfeited for rebellion.

In the fourteenth century the name Aytoun is found in Fife when John Aytoun had a charter of the lands of Over Pittadie and from him are descended the Aytouns of Inchdairnie.

Divorce of John Aiton & Helen Stobo (mar. 1865, Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland)

The following is taken from the East Aberdeenshire Observer, dated Friday, June 4 1886. I have no known connection to the family but I have replicated the article here in case it is of interest to anyone else.

BODDAM
DIVORCE CASE – In the Court of Session last week, Lord Fraser heard evidence in an action for divorce against John Aiton, C.E., some time of Boddam, who was last heard of in Tasmania. Mrs Aiton said she lived in Glasgow, where she was married to the defender in August, 1865. They lived in Glasgow for about two years, and then, her husband’s father having acquired the estate of Boddam, they removed thither, and her husband carried on the business of a net manufacturer. Sometime afterwards he left, without saying anything to her of his intention, for the Cape of Good Hope. He stayed there for several months, writing to her from thence. After his return he did no work, and she supported him out of money which she had inherited. In 1879 he left for Australia, where he was to make money and then return to her and their children. He gave her to understand that he was going to sail from London, but she afterwards discovered that he sailed from Glasgow. He had been intimate with a girl before then, and she had reason to suspect that he took that girl with him. It had been discovered that the girl resided in Glasgow, just before sailing. After he went away he wrote to her twice, but he had contributed nothing towards the support of her and their children. In 1884 her brother showed her a New Zealand newspaper containing an account of an action against her husband for breach of promise of marriage and seduction. Papers were put in showed that in Dunedin a Mrs Fanny Tynmor, a widow, had obtained £250 damages for breach of promise and seduction by defender, who was at that time in the employment of the Dunedin Harbour Commissioners. Lord Fraser gave decree on the ground of desertion.

(Notes:
According to their marriage certificate, John (b.c. 1842, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire; occupation: Civil Engineer) married Helen Stobo (b.c. 1841, Glasgow, Lanark) 10 August 1865 in Govan, Lanarkshire.

Children (from the IGI and the 1881 census):
William Stobo Aiton b. 30 August 1866, Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
John Aiton b. 4 October 1871, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
Helen Campbell Aiton b. 19 August 1873, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
Edith A. Aiton b.c. 1876, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
Eliza Jane Aiton b.c. 1878, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire

John Aiton was the son of William Aiton and his wife Marion Aiton ms Campbell who were married 28 March 1841, Hamilton, Lanark.

Helen Aiton ms Stobo was the daughter of William Stobo and wife Elizabeth Stobo ms Sinclair who were married 11 December 1829, Barony, Lanarkshire. Elizabeth Sinclair was deceased by 1865.)
William D. Begg was the son of John Begg and Jean Aiton. He emigrated to the US, married a widow with 5 children in Ohio, homesteaded in South Dakota and died in Seattle Washington. He was my great-great-grandmother's brother and I have much information on him and his family, including photographs and his homestead records. My great-grandfather wrote a book on his family and everything he knew about the Beggs is in it. It kicked off my research.

You may contact me at margaretrutledge@earthlink.net

So far, in my online tree I have coinnected my Minnesota, USA bunch with one Texas branch and the New Brunswick, Canada branch. Can we get together and connect the Aussie branch. There is one. I just haven't got to it yet. You can find my tree on ancestry.com. If you are a serious researcher I can give access to the entire tree.
Tracy. I have transcribed to a 50 page MS Word file, a book titled; "An Inquiry into the Origin, Pedigree & History of the Family , or Clan of Aitons In Scotland". Authored by William Aiton, Ex-Sheriff Substitute in Hamilton and published in Glasgow in 1830. It has been a great help to me and I think will be to you or any other Aiton researcher. No strings attached. It is just too much to post in a reply here. So, if you or others want the file sent, please email me direct at baa154@cox.net
Aiton's from Scotland 1700's

I am trying to find more information about a John Aiton (born 1700-1715) and his ancestors. He married Jean Weir and they had a son named William Aiton (1731-1793 born in Lanarkshire, Scotland). This William Aiton was the royal gardner to King George III and designed most of the gardens now seen at Buckingham palace. He had a son with Elizabeth Townsend. His son (William Townsend Aiton) took over for him in the gardens. WT Aiton had children with Sarah Smith. One of their children (Ann Augustus Smith (Aiton)) married my direct paternal great times ? grandfather Charles Foster. She was born in 1795. Any info on any of these people would be greatly appreciated!!!
