Aloha,
Yes, I think we are family. I missed the Haleiwa reunion that was held by Aunty Matilda. Our common ancestory was Kau Chi A(Ki). He arrived in Hawaii about 1860 and married a Hawaiian lady named Nakihe. They had 6 Children. Edward Kanoakalani Awo KAU was his 4th child. My grandfather Samuel Kanehoalani Singon Aki was his 5th child. I am in China with my volunteering for our church, the Church of Latter-day Saints. I have some information of the Kau-Aki Ohana in Hawaii, but I am focusing more on the Kau Family here in China. It's interesting that some family members went by Kau (the actualy surname) and some when by Aki which is actually a first name. I have about 3,000 names going back to 1200 AD. Lots of records were lost in the cultural revolution. I visited the family village (now its a city) in Dam Shui, just outside of Hong Kong. If you can give me your email address,(mine is johnakijr@hotmail.com, I can send you some information and pictures. Nice to talk to you cousin.

Hi, I don't believe we're related. I think Diana Aki, the singer is from there. There are about 2 large Aki families, and several smaller families from Hawaii that I know of. The Aki's from Kauai (Henry Aki who was the county chairman a while back, and the Aki's originally from Lahaina Maui (Samuel and Alice Aki) my grandparents. There are smaller groups from Oahu, Hilo, and Maui also. The Aki's that I know of have Chinese origins. There might be some with Japanese origin. The problem is that Aki is not a Chinese surname. It's actually a first name. My family surname is Kau. When he came to Hawaii from China he said his name was Kau Chi A(ki). Chinese have their surnames first instead of last. So the immigration thought his surnmae was Aki. He married a Hawaiian women and never changed his name. Some of our family members go by Kau, most go by Aki. We have a list of all of Kau Chi A(ki's children and most of his grandchildren names. So it's enough to identify who is related to us. We have also gone back into China and a village called Dam Shui to find relatives still living there and to obtain a copy of their genealogy. So far they can trace their ancestory back to 1206 AD. Lots of records were lost in the cultural revolution. If you have more questions, let me know.

Aloha John,

Thanks for the info, I also wish you success in your time in China. I also live overseas, I live in Israel. I guess I'm from another line, my grandfather was Raymond who was county chairman of Kauai in the 19560s. But, I knew he had many other relatives on other islands but, they may be through his maternal or father's mother's side. But, I guess we have in common that we are Chinese-Hawaiian families that had ancestors that had Aki as their given name, which became their family name in Hawaii.

Our family name was Chang/Zhang, our ancestor being Aki Chang, who married a Hawaiian woman during the Kingdom of Hawaii. His son was a Henry Kaiwi Aki. I guess I'm about the 5th generation. I remember my grandfather saying we probably came from the Hakka. I think we actually came from another minority that joined the Hakka. From some results of our DNA, I suspect we come from the Youtai. It is interesting from among the Chinese Youtai, there were seven main clans and I think one clan also had your family name Gao, which I think is another variation of your family name outside of the South.

By the way my e-mail is micahaki@fulbrightmail.org, it would be great to be in contact with you in e-mail.

Best wishes,
Micah
Hi Micah!
There are several Aki family in Hawaii. The largest are the Aki's on Kauai. A prominent ancestor was Raymond Aki who was the country chairperson (Mayor) on Kauai about the 1960's. The next, I believe, are those who originated in Honoluly through a KAU Chit (A)ki about 1864 from China and his Hawaiian wife Nahiki. There are several other Aki families that I have met through the years, most are not related. The problem is that Aki is not a Chinese surname but a given name. My family actual surname is KAU. Aki is a given name. Everytime you hear of a Ahkau, Ahmui, Ahchong, etc. You can tell that it is a given name. Chinese like to add an "Ah" or "A" in front of their given names. It denotes familiarity or friendliness. It would be the same in English when we call a good friend, "Eh George" except the Eh gets added on to "EGeorge"

Kau Chit Aki and his wife Nakike had 5 sons and 1 daughter. Their names were Henry Ah Choi a.k.a Apua Aki, Amoe Wahinealii Kau Aki, Harry Kauhane Ah Fook Aki, Edward Kanoakalani Awo Kau (Aki), Samuel Kanehoalani Singoon Aki (My grandfather) and Alexander Kau Aki. These were the 2nd generations about 1850 - 1950. Some of the 3rd generations are still alive 1940-2010. I'm the 4th generation 1940- 2010. My children are the 5th generation, they are about 30 -40 years old. My grandchildren are the 6th generation.
So if you can find any connection to the 2nd generation names than we are related. There was a family reunion held at Haleiwa Beach Park about 1998 by Aunty Malinda. That was the last time the family got together. I'm in China volunteering for the Mormon Church. I try to do some genalogy on my spare time. I have been to China and visited with the Kau Family in Daam Shui, Kwuntung. From what they told me, the family was very poor (Hakka Chinese) many of the young me left in the 1860's to find work in Malaysia, Hawaii, USA, Philippines, etc. IN fact one person came from Malaysia in 1960 and said that they were family. We are trying to find family that might also be in Malaysia. They would probably be using the KAU surname. Hopes this helps and you can make a connection. Thanks for replying. John Aki

Aloha James,

I came across your post and it sounded interesting. The names you mentioned are not so familiar to me, but I think they could also be distant relatives. As our family is quite large and been in Hawaii for quite some time. I would be very interested to learn more about the Aki Chinese Ancestor genealogy from China.

Best wishes,
Micah
