My grandmother was a Alaman, her father was Joe Alaman and they lived in Bastrop,Tx. Her name was Lee Edna Alaman. She always talked about her Uncle Leon. We have a cousin in Los Angles name Alma Ruth. She spoke to the family about a reunion in Calif some years ago. I wondered if there was other family out there some place. Jose(Joe) had four daughters Alma, Bessie, Lillian, and Lee Edna. I would like to know more about the family. Please contact me at 580-248-2260.

Conflicting information about the origins of the Alaman last name

I wondered if anyone would care to weigh in on this.

On the one hand, some people claim that Alaman is a variant of Aleman (meaning German in Spanish), thus pointing to a germanic origin.

On the other hand, others have said that this is unlikely, as the name appears as Alaman from very early Spanish records and there exists an Arabic surname Al-Aman. As Spain was a muslim nation for a 700 year period ranging from the mid 700's until the late 1400's, Alaman is possibly a hispanization of this surname, much like the Spanish surname Almanzor (Al-manzour) and other hispanizations from the arabic (e.g., Gerala from Jair-Allah, etc.).

Discussion is wellcome.

James was the son of Josie Corine Alaman who was living in Faulkner County, Arkansas with her parents, Frank and Clara Hogan Alaman. Josie died in Dade County, Florida on August 2, 1995.

I have done quite a bit of research on our line of the Marquis Alaman family.

I would love to find James' descendants.

My first advice is to refer you to the message posted on the Alaman ancestry board by Anne Alaman on 12July, 2001. It seems most likely that you are related to that Texas branch of the Alamans. Anne married Lawrence Alaman. His gr-gr grandfather was Leon Alaman who came from Mexico with his brother, Jose. This branch has progeny in Texas and LA,Ca, and had a family reunion in CA.
I don't know if they are related to David Alaman, Jr., whose family came from Lubbuck, TX.
My grandfather, Harry Allen Alaman (.d 1950), and his ancestors are probably not closely related to the Texas branch, although an aunt, Josie Alaman, married a Mr Boyd in Texas. My branch of the Alamans came from Ohio. William Alaman was born in 1816 in Ohio and died in Cumberland Co., Illinois in 1855. His family may have come from So. France, possible related to Sicard Alaman(1210-1275).

Gwen,
My Grandfather was Harry Allen Alaman. His family was originally from Illinois, then moved to Arkansas. He was in Conway, Arkansas in 1904 when my Mother, Flora Agnes Alaman was born. He was working in a baxite mine at the time. By 1920, the family moved to Joplin,Mo. Harry Alaman's father was still in Arkansas. My Mother called him "Paps". He may have died before I was born in 1932 (in Joplin,Mo). He married my Grandmother, Anne Bates, and had four children. Only my brother and I remain from that line. I have no records about the Alaman ancestory (only verbal information). Harry did have relatives in Texas; a sister I believe. I was told by an Aunt, that Harry's ancestors, originally from Germany, moved to Spain, then Mexico as part of the ruling class of the Mexican Colony.
Gwen,
My Grandfather was Harry Allen Alaman. He may have been Lucus Alaman,a famous Historian. But I have no documentation.
Did you see the note from David Alaman, Jr, from Texas? His Grandfather is James Alaman from Lubblock, Texas.
I appreciate your information on the Alamans that you sent. I am very interested in tracing the ancestory, and will do the necessary research required. The surname Alaman is so uncommon that we should be able to make connections. Please keep in touch and I will forward anything that I can discover.

Lucas Alaman, Mexican Historian

My Grandfather, Harry Alaman, told me that he had relatives in Texas. He died in Joplin, Mo. about 1950, so I very little information. My uncle told me that we were related to Lucas Alaman, the famous Mexican Historian and provisional president of Mexico in 1829. Lucas' relatives were from Spain. Harry's ancestors went from Mexico(?) to Texas to Illinois to Arkansas and Missouri.

Are you perhaps related to ancestors Josie Alaman (early 1900's) who married a Boyd, or any of the Alamans who live in Arkansas or Illinois?

Josie Alaman

I know of two women named Josie in my line of the Alaman family. One is Josie Alaman, born 1891,in a family of 4 brothers and 4 sisters. She married a Mr. Boyd in (?) Tyler County, Texas. Another is Josie C. Alaman who lived in Conway, Arkansas, and was not(?) married. She was the daughter of Franklin A. Alaman (born 1875), and the niece of the other Josie. Is it true that your Great-grandmother's married name is Josie Alaman, and Alaman was not her maiden name? In any case, Alaman is such an uncommon name (with an origin in or near France)that most Alamans in America are probably related. In my line, there are male Alamans (born prior to 1900) named Clarence L, Clarence Allen, Roscoe, Marquis, William, Frank, Allen A.,and Harry Allen Alaman. Do any of these fit in your Alaman line?

David

You are definitely from my line of the Alaman family! Your
Josie and my Addie Belle Alaman were sisters. If, I am
understanding correctly your grandmother was Josie Alaman
Boyd, she lived in Ca according to the O-bit of Addie Belle
Alaman Goodson but then moved to Texas. My grandmother
Rose Mae Goodson Moore Davis use to visit Josie in Texas.
The other Josie, Frank's daughter did live in Conway for years
but did move with her sister Margarite to Florida where they
both passed away. My line (our line), Marquis D L Alaman
married Clarissa Ellen North (her mother Mary Martie Whitsell)
Marquis and Clarissa lived in Mattoon, Ill, Poplar Blff Mo,
Bauxite Ar, Roland Ar. Clarissa died in Roland Ar and Marquis
died in Poplar Bluff, Mo. I have there death certificates and
Marquis's civil war records. I also have Clarence's military
records. My great grandmother Addie Belle Alaman married
first Mac Powell and second Joseph Nicademuis Goodson.
I have one great aunt still alive Aunt Clarissa who lives in
Columbus Mo. I do not have information on the first two
daughters of Marquis and Clarissa Alaman.
I would love to have more information on your line. I am currently in Arkansas but I live in Atlanta Ga. I am here doing
research and also looking at for a future move back to Arkansas, so please e-mail me at gwen5353@infi.net as I am
having a difficult time logging into this site from my laptop.
Most likely it is something I am doing wrong.
Please respond
Gwen Sell

George

I am most interested in your Alaman family.
My line was in Ohio-Ross County
Illinois-Matton Coles County
- Two others
Missouri-Poplar Bluff
- two others
Arkansas- Pulaski County
- Grant County
- Saline County
- Cleveland County
Texas - Tyler
Some of there known relations- Goodson-Boyd-
Dunn-White-Hiter-Byers-Robinson-Thacker-Cook-
Simington-Highley. My Great Great Grandfather
was Marquis "D' "L" Alaman. He served in the
Civil War and for Illinios and I believe that
he was born in Cumberland County Ill. He lived
in Mattoon Ill before moving to Missouri. He
later lived in Pulaski County Ar and then
moved back and forth from Ar to Poplar Bluff
Missouri. I have seen several other Alaman
families in the areas that they were at the
time and I know that they most likely are
connected, I just have not put that all
together as yet.

I would greatly appreciate a responds.

Sincerely Gwen Sell

George

I do believe that there was a Harry in my
Alaman line. I will have to get out my
Marquis "D" "L" Alaman's Civil War papers
and look at them and see if one of the
children was Harry. I would say that we would
have to have a connection as your line being
in the same places as mine at the same period
of time. The sister that was in Tx was Josie
Alaman who married a Boyd. My Great Grandmother
was Addie Belle Alaman who married a Goodson
in Pulaski County. She had married prior to
that to a Powell in Saline county AR. She
had an older sister Nellie who married a White
in Saline county. Nellie and Mr White moved
back to Poplar Bluff Mo and Nellie died there
at a young age. They had a sister named Laura
Alaman who married a Hiter. There was a brother
Frank and a brother Roy(Rosco) that lived in
Jacksonville Ar. Roy married a Goodson also.
If, we do connect as I
think we will, I have pictures and civil war
records and o-bit of Clarissa Alaman who died
in Mo in 1839. Marquis died in 1921 or 1925.
Can't remember that one just now. They are
both buried in Poplar Bluff Mo. However, she
died in Ar. at her sons Frank's house.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Yes you
are right the Alaman name is just not very
common.

Alaman Family

Dear Mr. Alaman, Ms. Sells and Mr. Martin:

I am Anne Alaman. I am the wife of Lawrence Alaman. My husband's family hails from Texas. My husband's knowledge of his family extends to his great grandfather, Leon Alaman. Leon came from Mexico to Texas with a brother, Jose. Leon settled for a time near Rosebud, Texas. There he married Melvina Simms, a woman of German and African ancestry. Together they had children including Leon, Lawrence Sr., Marcus, Douglas, Augustus, twins Claude and Claudene, Audrey, Lonnie, Doris. The family moved to Fort Worth and lived in the Lake Como community of Fort Worth. Many of the progeny of these children live in the Los Angeles California area in addition to Texas. We celebrated a family reunion in California last year and are anticipating one again in 2002.

What I have learned about the Alaman name is this - the name is Spanish in origin from a spanish word aleman which describes people of germanic origin. It is the name given to a germanic tribe which traveled in Europe several centuries ago. I do not know enough about the Mexican statesman (from Spain), Lucas Alaman, to know if Leon and Jose were related in some way to him.

You are welcome to contact me via my e-mail address if further interested in information.
