One of my cousins researched the Thomas Alban family of Cardiganshire, Wales. Quite a few of the descendants immigrated to Oak Hill, Jackson Co., Ohio. My great grandmother, Anna A. Alban (1835 - 1925) married David O. Davies and lived in Van Wert Co., Ohio.

Alban/Albin/Albon used in Wales and England was brought in by the Romans, denoting a person from one of the areas of the Roman Empire called Alba and the name was Albinus. For some reason the name became more popular in the 1800's in Britian and Wales. See the FTDNA Albin/Alban YDNA Project. All three members are in YDNA Haplogroup G.

Wondering if Chester C. Albin is Chester Charles Albin, brother of James Leroy Albin born in Hardensville, Illinois in the 1890s? His second marriage was to Mabel Fisher (Sullivan) around 1932. He died in 1946 in California.

Thanks Michael. I will plan to order the 37-marker test through the Alban surname project.

I actually don't know the ethnic origin of my Alban ancestry and am looking forward to finding out more about it, but the I2b1* clade seems to indicate Germanic/Scandinavian origins.

Best,
Dan

Yes, the 37-marker test is a good starting test. Many people do eventually go to 67 markers. It is a little cheaper if you order the 67 marker test up front, but you can always upgrade later. They keep your DNA in storage so you don't have to submit a new sample. Also, if you order, be sure to use the Join Request link on the Albin-Alban project page. Testing prices are cheaper when ordered through a surname DNA project.

In case you didn't know about it, there is a rather active email list for the Y-DNA I haplogroup. See ...

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/DNA/Y-DNA-HAP...

Family Tree DNA also does the Y-DNA SNP testing that is used to determine haplogroups and is on the forefront of haplogroup research. Is your Alban ancestry perhaps central European or maybe Scandanavian? I always think of these areas when I see an I2b haplogroup designation.

Regards,
Mike

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/albin/
Thanks, Michael.

Yes, my paternal haplogroup is I2B1*.

Well, having read up on this a bit, I guess I'll plan to do some additional Y-DNA testing through Family Tree DNA.

My understanding is that the 37 marker test should be sufficiently detailed to generate useful data for the Alban surname project. Is there any reason I should consider getting the 67 marker test done instead? I won't miss any connections with the 67 marker test, right? It would just enable me to have a greater degree of certainty about the closeness of relationship to potential relatives, right? My thinking is that I'll order the 37 marker test first, and possibly upgrade later if I have a lot of results.

Thanks,
Dan Alban

23andMe does a different type of testing on the Y chromosome than is done by Family Tree DNA for genealogical use in surname DNA projects. The 23andMe testing does give you info on your Y-DNA haplogroup which relates to your paternal line deep ancestry. Family Tree DNA tests for short tandem repeats (STRs) on the Y chromosome which are used to compare to others who have been tested looking for close matches indicating a common paternal line ancestor in the not-too-distant past. So, I would recommend doing the Family Tree DNA Y-DNA testing if you are able.

Regards,
Mike

ALBAN Surname DNA Project

A DNA project has been launched for the Alban surname, along with any variations such as Albin, Alben, etc. The project uses testing on the male Y chromosome which is passed directly down the paternal line from father to son making it ideal for investigating surname lineages. The testing can be used to uncover, prove, or disprove connections between various Alban lines and to also give clues about the deeper origins of the lineages.

Project participation is open to any direct paternal-line male Alban descendant - i.e., a male whose last name is Alban (or any variation of the surname) or a male whose biological paternal-line ancestry goes back to a Alban but whose last name was changed at some point, such as due to adoption. Even if you are not a direct paternal-line male Alban descendant, you can join the project by sponsoring the testing of a Alban male from your immediate or extended family, such as a brother, son, father, uncle, male cousin, distant male cousin, etc.

Feel free to visit the Albin-Alban project website for more details:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/albin/

Also, if you are an Alban that has already had Y-DNA testing done at Family Tree DNA, you can log into your account and use the Join Projects link to join the Albin-Alban project.

Mike
Project Administrator
Albin-Alban DNA Project
Thank you for your response. I am aware about the last marriage, my grandfather Francis was left in an ophrange and the house he was born in was sold and the money was to help Tony's new family move to Pennysylvania. The house was my great grandmother's Nellie Amour (not even Tony's), when she died she was buried in Montana with no tombstone. Really sad that Tony took off leaving his two young children behind with no trace. What I understand is Augustina didn't want the original Alboney name so she changed it to Albney. The chain of events that occured here is really a horrible gene trail, a real sad story. No trace from this Tony Alboney for his son and his son's children.
Hi,
My email address is schell1686(at)yahoo(dot)com.
My great grandfather grew up in Montana with a younger sister who was also adopted. He married Mildred Anita Thomas and had two sons. Grant Logan was killed in action during WWII in Germany. He received the purple heart posthumously. There is a headstone for him in the the US military cemetery in Lexington, Germany, but his remains were brought back to Victor, Mt after the war. His family stayed in Montana until my father who moved to NC as a teenager.

Email me what you have and I will send you what I have about Nellie. We know her mother and father, but have no information beyond on that. She was raised by her Aunt and Uncle and from what information I have on her, she had a very hard life.
What happened to Tony? We found a record that he married Lillian Hendrix after Nellie died and she had a daughter? There was no name on the birth certificate, but there is a death certificate for 25 days later with the name Violet Albone. Then 19 years later there is a marriage certificate (with the parents Lillian Hendrix and Tony Albony) for a Viola Albony. Do you know anything about these children? Did she have twins (only one birth certificate was found).
My uncle traced Tony through the Polk Directories, it shows he lived in the house he shared with Nellie until 1927/1928, after that the house is vacant cause Tony sold it. The house was originally Nellie's Aunt and Uncle's house.
Maybe you can find a picture of Nellie at the Kessler County School, where she was at 15 years old, look under Nellie E. Aymour in 1910 census. I do have a family tree for Tony Albney that has a little bit of information about Nellie Aymour give me your email address and I'll send you what I have. Did your great grandfather live a good life or was it hard?

Kathleen Alboney

Tony Alboney is the father of Catherine and Francis, Catherine didn't have children from what I understood, Francis is my grandfather, Francis was a POW and survived then married Adeline Marie Jensen in Idaho, when he returned from the war. He left soon after Adeline had the twins, my father Robert Alboney and Richard Alboney, although Richard died when he was 17 in Fort Benton, MT in 1964. Yes, Tony changed the spelling of Alboney so many times. I thought she had another son before Catherine per the information I have found, but she died so young it was really sad, looks like she had a little sister who died when she was going up. We are in California, we Francis is buried my father finally met his father after going the Navy, where Francis served. He died in Aug 1971. That's what I have right now. I will try to write back soon about any other information.

Thanks for emailing me back.

Kathleen Alboney

Hi!
I have been searching for someone related to Nellie for years!!
When she was about 14 she had a son named William Aymour (Name changed to Grant Logan Carruthers upon adoption) He was my great grandfather.
I would love to trade information with you.
We do not know much about Nellie and her family. My uncle hired an expert a few years back who was able to give us some information about her. He found two birth certificates of her children, Katherine and Tony. Is Francis her husband's son after her death (Nellie died in 1918) or is the name Tony for her son wrong? We had alot of trouble tracing her due to names changing on different records. For example, on her marriage certificate to Tony Albone her name is listed as Anna Amour (and Albone had several variations as well).
Any information you can give us on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hello - I found a picture album today in an antique store in Olympia, WA that included a picture of Tommy Alban - 1895. I don't know how he's connected to the Coats/Coates family who appeared to own this album. The picture is faded, but it is of a little boy, outside a house - perhaps in the wintertime. I believe the Coats/Coates family lived in the Aberden/Raymond area of Washington State. I will be happy to scan and send to those interested.
