E. W. Alderman, January 5, 1893, aged 72 years, 11 days. Funeral services at Union Chapel in Keokuk county, January 7, conducted by Rev. S. Quick. The subject of this notice was born in Meigs county, Ohio, December 25, 1820, where he lived till 1849, where he emigrated to Iowa, and settled in Van Buren county, remaining there two years, and then in 1851, he settled in the western part of Keokuk county, where he lived until about nine years ago, when he went to Nebraska, living there until a few days prior to his death. He became ailing, and his son, M.V. Alderman and sister, Mrs. J.E. Rhinehart went to visit him, and the old gentleman and wife returned to Iowa with their son and daughter. It was thought that perhaps he might recover after his return here, but his vital forces were too nearly exhausted, and he yielded to the embrace of the grim monster. His aged companion and eight sons and two daughters survive him to mourn his loss.

Can you tell me more about when and where Zachariah Alderman's father died? This information about Nancy Nash says that her husband died in January 1893 -- that would be Zachariah Alderman's father, right? The article about the shooting of Edgar Crandall says that Zachariah Alderman was with his father the day of the shooting. I wonder who he was with.

Augustus Alderman Conundrum SE Ohio

Augustus Alderman Conundrum S E Ohio
Looking through the Alderman online forums and family tree postings, the Alderman families in SE Ohio, Athens, Morgan & Monroe counties, are all very much in agreement as to ancestors and arrival dates and history. The main player starts with Elisha Alderman 1742-ca 1832 and his wife Thankful Huff 1753-ca 1829 and their family moving to Athens county around 1810. There were other families in this group related to Elisha Alderman, i.e. Phillips, Smith and Vandermark.

All of this is fairly well documented by various records not only in Ohio but in New York. The early documentation in NY is sketchy relying on mainly historical written narratives and family history books drawing on those narratives. Very little actual primary documents are provided linking the early Aldermans of NY around 1800 to earlier Aldermans in Connecticut.

It is fairly well established that the Aldermans of SE Ohio did indeed come to Ohio around 1810 with their families from Allegany county NY. So I will start from there with my Augustus Alderman conundrum. Up until this year, 2011, I have not found any Alderman with the given name of Augustus in any of the narratives, civil records, or family histories prior to Augustus Stone Alderman. Augustus Stone Alderman 1815-1876 was born in Athens county died in Perry county according to his death record as recorded in Perry county OH. This death record gives Augustus’ parents as Elijah Alderman and Mary Watkins.

Augustus Stone Alderman married Julia Ann Noland according to some researchers on 20 Dec 1835 in Monroe county OH. I’ve not found any actual record for the marriage. The date is specific so I imagine someone somewhere has a family bible or other record to substantiate the date. The actual date is not important only the fact that Augustus married Julia Ann Noland. The Noland family is in my direct line. Another marriage of interest is Phillip Noland ca 1814 to Lucy Alderman ca 1813 on 21 Dec 1834 in Athens county OH. This marriage date is recorded in the Athens county records. There is one more Noland/Alderman marriage indirectly. This would be Letitia Noland marriage to Justus Baker Phillips on 4 Jul 1827 in Athens county OH. The Alderman connection in this case is because Justice Baker Phillips’ mother was Mary Alderman, a sister of Elisha Alderman 1742 mentioned in the beginning of this post.

The story is that Augustus Stone Alderman and Lucy Alderman are siblings and Philip Noland, Julia Ann Noland and Letitia Noland are siblings. The Alderman’s parents being Elijah Alderman & Mary Watkins while the Noland’s parents are Philip Noland 1780 and Martha Gibson. Although these relationships are not well sourced, I’ve every reason to believe they are true and no reason to believe otherwise. Now starts the mystery.

Recently researching my Nolands, I came across surveys done in 1803 in what was then Belmont county OH. The particular survey of interest is of R4 T3. This survey clearly shows Philip Noland and Augustus Alderman owning properties in Section 30. The properties are only separated by one small 40 acre farm. I will show later how these two properties are connected to Augustus Stone Alderman 1815 and Philip Noland 1814.

Now the big question is; Who is this Augustus Alderman listed in the 1803 survey? It certainly is not Augustus Stone Alderman as he was born in 1815. I’m sure it is not Augustus Stone Alderman’s father, Elijah, as he was born 1788 and would have been only 15 at the time and it is established that Elijah 1788 did not arrive in Ohio until about 1810. Whoever this Augustus Alderman is, he had namesakes for generations to come even in my Noland and Haynes lines.

Augustus Alderman Noland was named after his uncle Augustus Stone Alderman. My dad’s uncle Augustus Alderman Haynes was named after his uncle, Augustus Alderman Noland. There are numerous other examples not only in the direct Alderman line but corollary lines too.

Okay this is how I connect the 1803 survey parcels to the Augustus Stone Alderman and Philip Noland families. On 7 Nov 1837 it is recorded that Augustus S Alderman buys the property described as SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 30 located in R4 T3. This is exactly the same property owned by one Augustus Alderman in 1803.

On 20 Mar 1837 it is recorded that Philip Noland bought the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 30 R4 T4 in Monroe county. This is the very same parcel of land as owned by Philip Noland in 1803. Whereas the original properties in 1803 were in Belmont county and now located in Monroe county as Monroe was partly formed from Belmont in 1813.

To sum things up, who is this Augustus Alderman owning property in 1803 very near Philip Noland 1780??
dannyhaynes
dhaynes@cox.net
I have found some additional information on Zachariah Alderman and will be glad to share what I have. He was tried for murder, found guilty of manslaughter, and served 7 years of a 10 year sentence. I found a newspaper account of the murder, some court documents, and prison record. I am mainly interested in the man he killed -- Edgar Crandall. I would also be interested to know what Alderman was doing for work at the time of this murder (my ancestor is described in a genealogy as "killed by a cowboy"). And how he got released early from prison. You can contact me directly at NancyStevens4000@gmail.com.

I am helping to research Charles W who was the oldest child. Zack may have been aquitted or maybe got away and settled in Garfield County. He may have died, the law caught up to him, or maybe his wife just divorced him. Let me know what you think

Barry

I am such an idiot! I've gotten side-tracked w/everything from taxes to painting my condo...by the time I remember to call your mom, it's too late on the East Coast. You would think I'd be on top of that 3 hour lag by now but I still forget to call my mom in Georgia or my brother & sister in Sarasota sometimes before it's midnight there. Anyway, I was on top of it today until I realized my phone battery was dead. Brother!
I'm recharging now & taping the numbers on my mirror. (: (:

Gypsy A.
Isabelle Alderman married --- Neff. She later married James Buckbee. Isabelle died in Wirt County in 1874. Isabelle was the sister of Daniel Alderman. Daniel married Mary Margaret Buckbee, the sister of James Buckbee. - I am looking for the marriage date & place of James and Isabelle. Also the burial place of Isabelle. - - James and Isabelle had a daughter, Sarah, who I believe married Isaac Chancey. James had moved west after Isabelle's death and Sarah stayed in WV.

Thanks for any info about Isabelle.

Thanks for your reply, Barry. I read your mother's comments on the CG site and tried to find ya'll after that, but hit a few dead ends. You must be retired? I'm living in WA which makes some of my research a little tricky. Those archives at U. of Miami, for instance; they won't release a copies of Uncle Horace's writings.

Anyway, your mom said she remembered it was a nice house & I think she said something about Ruby? How amazing. At 5 yrs. old, she's got to be the only eyewitness from that day!
I'll contact Mr. Waxman.
Thanks! Gypsy*

My mother's father's first wife was the sister of Pearl. She was here in Miami the morning that Horace was hung in Ft. Lauderdale along with other family members. She remembers the "gathering" the morning of the hanging as they all went outside to say a prayer. She does remember Horace, Pearl and the daughters. She is preparing to give a small video this morning to a Mr. Steve Waxman, 954-817-7568, who is making a documentary on the Coast Guard Rum Running days. Hope this helps. Her father's name was Leslie H. Bronson.

I've attached an old photo that seems to be pre-Civil War, possibly 1850s judging from the woman's hair and fashion. I think the couple could be Isaac Newton Alderman (1831-1910) & Elizabeth Pearson (1835-1913) but there is nothing on the back to identify who they are and I don't have any other photos for comparison. It was in the possession of their great grandson and now in my possession and I'd like to identify it. The man fits the physical description from Isaac Newton Alderman's Civil War papers - 5'7", dark hair and eyes. The tree I have up for the Aldermans is called Aldermans Etc.
-Regan Harrington

Hi Debbie! My address is: Linda H. Clements - 50 Roberts Farm Road, Forsyth, GA 31029. Will be happy to pay you for your trouble. David James was my great grand father. I know there are still some Alderman's in and around Calhoun co. FL (kinard). I have the children of David James and Mary Jane, one being my grandmother Leila. Thank you so much for looking into this for me. Linda

Linda,
If you would like to give me your mailing address I will send you copies of the pages out of the book tat relate to your lineage. Just to give you an outline this is what I found:

1.William Alderman 1640-Aug 1,1697
+ Mary Case (married 1679) June 22,1660-Aug 22,1725
2.Thomas Alderman June 6,1683-Aug 15,1715
+Mary Seagrave (married April 27, 1702)
3.Daniel Alderman 1711-Oct 1785
+Abigail Harris(married 1740) March 26,1720
4.John Alderman 1740-1822
+Mary Cashwell (married 1770)
5.John Alderman Jr March 2,1782-March 21,1857
+Nancy Ann Newton (married 1800)
6.James Alderman Nov 28,1802-March 19,1842
+Susan Newton (married Oct 11, 1823)
7.Enoch Wells Alderman Sept 1,1829-Aug 1,1885
+Mary Emaline Jones
8.David James Alderman 1863-May 17,1940
+1.Jane Griffin
+2. unknown

the book stops here. There is no other information on David James Alderman and Mary Emaline Jones Alderman. So apparently when researching the book they never found family members that could finish the younger generations. You should be able to finish connecting the dots.
A distant cousin,
Debbie Cruce

Both. Looks like it was originally a single book, and the guys who are reprinting it have simply bound it in two sections, separating them at an arbitrary place right in the middle. The numbers run consecutively through both, and the index at the end of the second volume is by "overall" page number.
=
I think the reprint is the way to go, if you just want to get the data. If you want an "heirloom" book, you can find the original publication for sale on line but it costs more.
