Ok, so I'm trying to figure out my grandfathers family history. I may be opening a can of worms in my family, I'm not sure. Anyway, My grandfather was adopted out of the Alfaro family into the Neri family. I'm wondering if anyone may know about that. I'm guessing it was about 1954 when he was adopted. His birth name is Frank Alfaro Jr. and all I know about his family is his father's name was Frank Alfaro Sr. He was a musician and left his wife and son when his son was a baby. Frank Jr.'s Mother's name was Connie.

Thanks for letting me know if you know anything
-Samantha

hey, my name is Frankie
I'm 18 and i was doing A LOT of research into our family history; i want to know exactly who we are, and i ran into a couple sites that state that our family name has dated back since the Inquisition in Spain. So i guess we are somewhat descendants of Sephardi Jews.

I have recently come across a new name in my family history research: Lofaro. From what I have seen so far, Lofaro and Alfaro are variations of the same name. Is this true? Does Lofaro come from the Alfaro name? The family line that I am researching with this name comes from Southern Italy. Since I know that the Spanish had a huge influence in Southern Italy, I am interested in knowing if the Lofaro surname does in fact come from Alfaro, which would of course mean it has a Spanish root. So far, I only know that the Lofaro name is Sicilian. Beyond that, I have very little information, only that Lofaro has a number of variations, including Alfaro, Il Faro and Le Faro, besides others.

saludos

Victor Labrador Alfaro

Thank you for the history. I posted something for my husband regarding his family which is Alfaro (his father is from San Jose Michoacan) and came to the US around the time of of WWI and tried to get into the military. I do not know if there was a family he left behind in Michoacan, but he went on to father many children before passing away in 1961 in Juarez. Thank you for this info.

Hello, My name is Telma and I am a decentant of the Alfaro Family in El Salvador. I'm not sure where they come from but i know, my grandfather meet my grandmother in the town of Santa rosa de lima, La union, El Salvador. As a result of their relationshp, my father was born Carlos A. Gomez. As you can see he does not carry the name, due to problems that arouse between my grandparents at the time. However, my father is a direct decentant of Simon Alfaro. He resides in El Salvador to this day, however, im not sure where. I would like to know more about the Alfaro family, considering, that i am a decentant, and to this day have never met anyone from the Alfaro family.

thank you!

I want to know if anyone knows anything about this family...

Benita Alfaro and Nicolas Santana both born in Mexico or Texas Had one son I know of:
Filiberto Santana born August 22, 1890 or 1894 in Mexico or Texas.
Filiberto Santana and Theresa Gonzales born in Texas or Mexico in 1896. Had three Children one being my grand father:
Frank Gonzales Santana Born 4 Oct. 1919 in LosAngeles, California. Died January 25,1998 in Merced, California. Franks two brothers and mother died the within the same year Frank was born.
From oral family history... Filiberto Santana was a bootleger... He was caught and his son Frank lived with the Gomez. When Filiberto was either done with time or escaped he lived in San Jose. Frank knowing that his dad lived there ran away from the Gomez family at age 15 to find his dad... He lived with his dad from then on... Frank then joined the Army in which he only served a year of then went AWOL... Filiberto helped Frank Hide. They both changed their name to Carlos Gomez. They both eventually moved to El Nido, Merced County, California. To Hide Out. I have no proff of this, and i am really new to genealogy and i don't know where to go to look for this information... Thanks,

Alfaro can very well be a Jewish (Sephardic) name and in many cases is. The name is found listed on Sephardim.com http://wwww.sephardim.com by 6 different sources including the Holy Office of the Catholic Church of Spain. The name also appears on several inquisition lists. What nany people do not know is that the Arabs introduced surnames into Spain.

Alfaro is certainly not a Jewish name. The Al part means "the" in Arabic, whom conquered the Spanish and the Arabic are mostly Muslim and the faro part comes from the old Spanish means beacon. The Alfaro last name comes from the Spanish state La Rioja, whom has a lot of Basque influence. The Basques are one of the only Geramnic trbe descendants left in Spain. With all this, the last name Alfaro is most likely Arabic-Celtic last name. My last name is Alfaro and I have relatives who look like Alex Smith the qb for the 49ers, whom looks like of Celtic descent and relatives that look like Cesc Fabregas, who looks as if he is from Morocco. Overall, Alfaro is not a Jewish last name. One very common Spanish Jewish last name is Levy.

I actually thought it was a mix of Arab and Portuguese or Spanish.
There are Arab last names that start with AL and then the next part of the last name is the city or town from where they come from. FARO is a city in Portugal near Spain's border.
And since part of the Iberian peninsula was once ruled by the Arabs for 700 years it made sense to me.
But i guess there's more to explore.

Worked at a library for 5 years

I am in wisconsin. All I know about the Alfaro name is that is is rooted from Moorish and Arabic. Literal translation from Spanish to English is Shoemaker. And in the town of Alfaro Spain- they were in fact horse shoe makers. This is where they get the family crest. They were never royal but were royaly employed- sort of. This is also where the next translation comes in. If you translate the name from spanish to moorish- it means horse. But there is another translation. Many often say that the Arabic translation is tower, but just as Mexican Spanish might say car- the Spanish from Spain would say truck. Same thing. The correct translation is Light House. The name is in fact rooted in the Jewish world. The name is Italian and Spanish. But we have to remember that the king of Sicilly was married to Isabella of Castille in the 1400's so there you are. After Italy threw their little tantrum during the plague outbreak and forced all of the Jews onto Italy's islands- most italians died and the Jewish lived due to clean habits and kosher cooking- then they were forced out completely for about 100 years or so. The first documented Alfaro from Spain arrived on Ellis island about 1919. Before that, there were plenty who came to this country after Columbus opened the doors to sea exploration to the Americas and elsewhere.

But myy uncle on the other hand, he told me that Alfaro was from my grandmother not my grandfather and she died before I was born. You are the first person i've come across that has the rarest last name and from EL Salvador. Maybe we can chat!

Alfaro a Jewish name?/Mr. Leon

I don't pretend to teach you, but I don't believe there are that many Jewish surnames per se. I had read the surname came from the town of Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain & originated in the 12th century; many families, including Sephardic Jewish ones, took on the ssurname & some immigrated to Italy, Portugal, France, the Philippines & the Americas in time. Feel free to e-mail me & I wish you the best.

Hi, Aleycia. I really only wanted to know a little about the origin, or history, of the Alfaro family name and the furthest back we've been traced. I haven't got a lot of time to do the research for myself so whatever you could pass on would be great. I'm originally from New York City but my wife and I moved out to Oak Harbor, Ohio nearly six years ago. My father, Miquel Alfaro, and his family live out on Long Island, and when his mother died some years ago, they became the only other Alfaros I've known. His father is still alive in Puerto Rico but I've never met him and don't know his name. I don't really talk to my father much. And, hardly ever about our pasts. Well, thank you for responding so soon, and I look forward to hearing from you. Take care, Michael.

Hello Michael! I don't have it on the computer, and it's about 3/4" thick!! If you ask specific questions, I will try to look them up and help you any way i can. My grandmother gave me the family book several months ago and I'm not sure where she ordered it. She said that another Alfaro had called her and asked her if she wanted to order it. It is a very interesting book. It tells of all the places the Alfaros can be tracked down to and where they originated from for the past 4 or 5 centuries!! All over the world! Talks about the immigrants. And then it has listings of names and addresses of Alfaro's now all over the US and the world. Hope that helps you!!! I'm in Wichita, Ks. Where are you? Would love to chat sometime! Bye for now! Aleycia
