Traci,
My Fathers parents were both Charles Alford and Francis Alexander, I wonder if there is a connection. My fathers name Was Ernest Alfred, his name was spelled wrong on his birth certificate. I think there is a possibility we might be related. He has a sister named Helen, who last resided in St Louis. Over the years I've lost contact with my fathers family after he passed in 1980

Jeff Alfred

Sweetie have you thought about DNA testing? a Y- DNA on you and if your grand mother had any daughters a MTDNA on them. It is expensive but worth it. Ancestry is good but Family Tree has a real good one that will link you to your family name. That is how we found the Alford connection in our line. We had always been told that our last name had been changed. That would be my first thing to do. If you need any help feel free to post me.

I am an Alford but it's a complicated past what little i know of it. Apparently my Great Grandma Alford was not a blood Alford she was adopted by an Alford family her daughter Mary gave birth to my dad in 1964 but nobody living can tell us who his father is so he took grandma Alford's name. It is all very confusing but I'm really anxious to know more about my history even though its someone else who's family I descended from. Any help would also be great but maybe we are related somehow?

John Alford - Kingston / Horry County

Looking for any information about a John Alford, who first appears in a deed book from Horry County, dated 5 Oct 1801. John Alford also appears in numerous deed books, along with Arthur Alford. Deeds seem to often mention Bug Swamp, Moses Floyd and the Mishoe Estate. In 1838, John Alford, Sr gives 350 acres to his son, John Alford. In 1843, John Alford gives a gift of 1000 acres to his daughters/children: Mary, Winna, and Martha Ann . . and also grandson, Benjamin Huger, child of daugher Mary. Does anyone know if this is the same John Alford over the years. Any relationship to other Alfords in the area?

My grandfather Andy Mack Collins was the son of Ishmael Lawson and Nancy Jane Collins. She was married to Tarlton Alford when she had affair with the Lawson man and had Andy Mack so she had to give him her maiden name of Collins. I do know that they say she came up missing when Andy was small. Im wondering was there any more children with the Alford man or was Andy her last child?
My email is coolforlabs1@aol.com

John Alford - Horry SC / Jackson County FL

my 2nd gr grandfather, John Alford (married to Eliza Tharp) lived in Jackson County, FL (1850 & 1860 Census). Next door n 1850, was a John Alford b: 1776 - in household: Nancy Ann, Mary, Martha Ann, Winney, Benjamin Hager (son of Mary), Mahala, Jim, & Clarkey. I have found a copy of a will from Horry District, dated 18 Sep 1843, leaving his estate to Mary, Winni, John, Martha Ann & Benjamin Hager. The land left in the will is listed on land/deed records from Feb 1840, once belonging to a plat (grant) from William Rabon Cener & the Issac Mishoe estate. The same John Alford Sr, and John Alford Jr appear on multiple land/deed records for the same lands regarding the Cener/Mishoe property. With the household of John listing Nancy Ann, Mary, Martha Ann, etc, in Jackson County, this leaves me to believe that after writing the will in 1843, they left for Florida when they appear in the 1850 Census. Does anyone have any connections between the John Alfords?
The will may be viewed on:
http://alfordassociation.org/COLLECTIONS/LEA/l_116.pdf
Hi Gloria,

I don't have your Thomas in my tree, but he is probably related to my Nathaniel (s/o Christopher) b. 1746 Codford St Peter, Wiltshire. Maybe even an older brother. If you go to my tree on Tribalpages and send me a request from there I can give you access to the tree. We may eventually find a link and also find Christopher's ancestors.

Cheers,
Diane

Hi Jan,

I have been meaning to get back to you for ages re William Henry Alford and his wife Ann Eliza Rogers. I have found that there were 2 families of the same name living in Victoria having children at the same time. The other family started having children in Brighton and move around a bit before eventually settling in Warrigul. The way to tell the birth records apart is that the other family only used the names William Alford and Ann Rogers when registering thier children. For our family, on most occasions William included his middle name of Henry and Ann always included her middle name of Eliza. The children or our William and Ann were:
Hannah Rose c1866-1903
Sarah Jane 1867-bef 1871
Robert William 1867
Sarah Jane 1871-1872
William 1872-1872
William 1874-1954
George 1875-1876
Francis Abel 1877-1877
Joseph 1879-1880

I alway thought it strange that he started having children at 16-17 and had about 5-6 before getting married. Now we know that these earlier children were born to a different William and Ann.

Cheers,
Diane

Hi Gloria,

Your William and Thomas are not siblings of Abel Alford, immigrated to Queensland or his younger brother William, immigrated to Victoria. I had a look at the Victorian birth index and it looks like your William and Thomas were the children of John Alford and Phoebe Stokes. If so, then John and Phoebe had the following children registered in Victoria:

Alford, Henry John, reg 1858, @ TARRAVILLE, #4446 - Died: reg 1925 age 67, @ Yarram Y, #7740
Alford, Thomas, reg 1860, @ WO RA, #10854 - Died: reg 1917 age 57, @ Melb E, #13086
Alford, George, reg 1862, @ TARR, #18442 - Died: reg 1947 age 84, @ AFORD, #273
Alford, Elizabeth Jane, reg 1864, @ WORA, #19267
Alford, Wm, reg 1867, @ ALBERTA, #9 (Probably born Dec 1866)
Alford, Charles Albert, reg 1869, @ TARRAVILLE, #19177 - Died: reg 1943 age 74, @ DNONG, #17493
Alford, Harriette Agnes, reg 1871, @ TARR, #12705
Alford, Phoebe, reg 1873, @ TARRAVILLE, #20606
Alford, James Robert Groundwater, reg 1875, @ WARA, #26231 - Died: reg 1940 age 64, @ E Melb, #7597
Alford, Unnamed Male, reg 1878, @ TARR, #19527 – Died: reg 1878 age 4 days, @ WORA, #10014

Phoebe Alford nee Stokes died 1933 age 98, reg Maffra, #16401. She was the d/o George Stokes and Hannah Durant.

Possible death of John Alford is 1916 age 84, reg Maffra, #6611. s/o Henry Alford and Mary Goddard. You would need to get the death record to confirm that he was the husband of Phoebe.

Our Abel, William and sister Sarah Emma who also came to Victoria were all from Upton Lovell, Wiltshire and were the children of Abel Alford and Sarah Dyer.

I have checked my tree and can't seen anyone that matches your William and Thomas. I would be interested to know what part of Wiltshire your Alfords came from. There may be a connection further back.

Cheers,
Diane
Victoria

Why are they important?

In my family tree, I can trace a direct ancestral line back to Alexander Alford (the one who changed the name to Alvord in America), and back through his family up through Reverend Alexander Alford, Thomas Alford, etc. Looking online (and on here), there is tons of stuff about them. Heck, there's a BOOK written on them. But why? I haven't come across anything that tells me why there's so much information on them. THe only thing is that in the early 1100's, one of them was knighted, and I've seen some websites that suggest some relation to royalty? But I have no idea. Nothing tells me anything definite, just that some of their names are listed on websites called "Royalty of England" and stuff like that. Anybody know anything about the family?

I have a James or Jimmy Alford in the Marshall genealogy line and have been unable to go an further back with him. He migrated from GA with his father in law, William M Marshall and wife Lucy Alford Marshall. Lucy's brothers and a few of William's brothers came in the journey around 1840 to the Yazoo now Holmes County area. There are many Alford's and Marshall descendants in the area. Have been unable to locate a will of James or Jimmy Alford. An uncle did request one in genealogy research some 30 years ago to receive a Jackson Alford Will as the only Alford Will in that time period requested. Not certain if any of this information helps any of you. I will gladly share what I have. A great deal of the information is posted as time permits on the profiles on ancestry (wrong right or indifferent) I don't know if I posted that will. cindyc@dtcweb.net

Ms Peggy,
I am starting an Alford tree for my ancestors. I believe that i saw something early in my search that had something to do with an Alford in Arkansas. There are so many brothers/sisters from Somersett, England to Virginia, to North Carolina. From here several break off to Georgia/South Carolina/ Alabama/Arkansas. I will go back thur my notes and see if I can find anything more. I don't think it was awhole lot though. So don't get your hopes up. My family went to Texas from Alabama, so one of their siblings is probably what there is. Write to me email Cherokee40@aol.com

Thanks

Mike Alford
