Hugh Massy married Jane Alison in 17 Sep 1825 on the Island of Cephalonia where the 90th Light Infantry was stationed. I am a descendent of what I consider the black sheep of the family, Henry R. Massy (aka Harry R. Alison) born in 1842 in Co Limerick who married Augusta Cory in Detroit, MI. I am still looking for information about Jane and Hugh. I know they relocated to Ontario, Burke’s Irish Family Records lists Hugh’s death date as 1857 but I haven’t found any evidence of that. Jane appears to have lived with her sons in Detroit from 1862-1869 and her son Henry reported in his Civil War pension app that she died in Canada while on a trip to visit another of her children.
Oh… and Frederick and Thomas Rothwell were actually brothers and the sons of Wade and Sarah Sidney (Kellett) Rothwell.
Cheers
I, too, am a descendent of Captain Harry Alison through his daughter Mary Alison who married William R. Macdonald. I have been filling in information on Harry Alison's family. I, somehow had picked up on the information that Jane Alison (Mary's sister and Harry's daughter) had married a Hugh Massey, but was not entirely convinced that this was correct. I find it interesting that their daughter. Mary Anne Massy married a Frederick Wade Rothwell. I am very aware that Jane Alison's sister married a Rothwell, also (Major Thomas Wade Rothwell). I am especially curious about the middle name "Wade" on both of these names. Do you know if they are related?

For some reason I couldn't post a reply to this before, if at first you don't succeed...

The Jane Scott ALISON who married Stanley Franklin MASSEY was the daughter of Robert Williamson ALISON my great grandfather, who was actually a plumber not a merchant.

As far as I know there is no connection between my ALISONs and yours although I would be interested to know if there was one! My Robert was born in Dunkeld son of James ALISON and was married to Mary Ann MARSHALL.
Regards
Sue Anderson

Hi

Hopefully this time I will be able to post a reply! Jane Scott Alison is definitely my great aunt Jeannie, the story goes she went out to Rio to nurse and married her patient. Her father Robert Williamson ALISON was a plumber but appears as a merchant on both her marriage certificates. The story in my family was that her MASSEY husband was one of the tractor Masseys, however I have never found any evidence to support this.

Regards
Sue Anderson

Thank you very much for your message, Susan, which is at once exciting and frustrating!
The birth of my Jane Scott ALISON, daughter of Robert Lloyd ALISON, was registered in Dungog, New South Wales, Australia, in 1874, according to the NSW BMD Registry. Elsewhere in my tree I have two Robert William ALISONs, one 1847-1921 and the other 1873-1946, Jane Scott's brother. But no Robert Williamson Alison.
So near and yet so far.
Have you seen Sue Anderson's posting? I've tried to forwarsd yours to her, she was trying to find the marriage of JSA, and I think you have the answer for her!
Good hunting
Don Montague

Susan Humphries has just written top Ancestry with the following message for me - and YOU!!

I have the marriage certificate of Stanley Franklin Massey, merchant of 69 Rua Cosure Vellio, Roi de Janeiro to Jane Scott Alison of 110 Rua Passageru, Rio de Janeiro. Stanley's father is stated as Alexander Massey, merchant and Jane's father is Robert Williamson Alison, merchant.

Stanley is 38 and Jane 26 and they were married in the Consulate General in Rio on 29th December 1898. The certificate also states that they were already married on the 24th Dec before the First Civil Registrar.

They only had 2 years of married life as Stanley died at the Hotel Metropole in the Strand in London in 1901.

Does this help at all? I am sure Stanley Franklin is one of 'my' Masseys but I'm not sure where he fits yet.

Sue Massey, now Humphries

Gosh, I hope some of you are still out there, I think I might have stumbled over my brickwall. My Massy's have been a mystery to the family. I have a 3rd great grandfather who was a thoroughly unreliable informant but he went by Henry or Harry R Massy at the time he married my grandmother Augusta Cory and later as Harry or Henry R Allison, and I just found a mention of a Rothwell as an unspecified relative mentioned in his brother John's probate record. They lived at one time in Detroit with Jane Massy (listed in directories as the widow of Hugh) and Richard. In his pension file he mentions coming from Limerick and settling in Ontario before coming to the States and that his mother went back to visit family in Canada and died there.

Anyway, I suspect I am a descendant of Jane Alison and Hugh Massy and I would love information on the Alison family.

Thanks,

Jessica

Hello Olive111
We are definitely relatives. My mother's father was William Alison, born 8 December 1883, Tubberboice Mell, Drogheda, County Louth, IR (I have birth cert) the son of Alexander Alison & Janet nee Fraser.I have their marriage cert - 10 August 1880 at Dysart - His father is shown as William Alison, Merchant Ship Captain, Deceased and her father is shown as Alexander Fraser, Builder. The birth certificate of one of his children also shows him as a Grocer in 1855.
William my grandfather was an officer in the merchant navy in his youth - chief engineer, I believe. After her married my grandmother, Gertrude Norminton from Liverpool, they eventually returned to Kirkcaldy where he became the supervisor/chief engineer of the power plant for the Nairn Linoleum factory. Bessie /Beth died young- I have photos of the family grave stone in Kirkcaldy. Maggie married someone called Beattie and had son Victor Beattie who never married and Margaret who also never married. They ran the family business, a shop in Kirkcaldy.

I've only really had time and resources to really get into family history research since I retired and since my mother died. I do so hope I'm not too late to make contact with you and look forward to hearing from you. I can give you up to date information on the family and some photos

Kindest regards, Penelope Fuller (known as Bud)
I'm in search of any information pertaining to my ggggrandmother, Agnes Alison. She was born in the town of Renton, in Cardross Parish, Dunbartonshire in about 1822 and married to James Davie in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire on Feb 20, 1841.

According to family accounts, she died at sea while enroute with her son, George, to the U.S. in 1848-49.

Any information that might help me identify her parents etc. would be so very much appreciated.

Israel Alison - Pike Co., AL (Lost headstone found?)

My husband and I were in Pike Co Alabama today photographing the headstones in Carter Cemetery when I noticed a headstone in the woods outside the fence. Jeff went around the fence, cleaned the muck away from it and got a picture of the stone.

http://www.paradoxdesigns.com/celtic/img/Alison_Israel.jpg

I have a copy of the survey of this cemetery that was done in 1971 and it doesn't list this Alison, nor are there any other Alisons in the cemetery. I am not related to any Alison as far as I know but thought someone might be looking for this person. I'll leave the image up on my webspace for future searches here. If you are on the mailing list and want more information on this cemetery please email me as I'm not on the list myself.

Kat Reece
kat@hallofmaat.com

Hi Ruth,

Have you heard about the Allison/Ellison DNA Project that is helping Allisons and Ellisons find long-lost cousins? Unfortunately for your direct line, there are no male descendants who have the Allison surname. The Y-chromosome DNA is tested and only males inherit the Y-DNA from their father and pass it on to their sons down through the generations, just as surnames are passed from father to son.

Girls do not inherit Y-DNA, so females can't join a surname DNA project. Seems unfair, doesn't it? :-)

If you ever make contact with a male direct descendant of Daniel Allison who HAS the ALLISON surname, he would be a very welcome new member of the DNA Project.

The URL for our webpage which shows the Allison/Ellison DNA Project Results to date and the ancestry charts of the current participants is:
http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~allisonellisondna/inde...

Mary
roberta has forwarded this to me because i have been doing alot of research on the allison line you have questioned about. In the end we found out that her grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister! so cousins...It is friday i am in the military and just moved to new york and have been unpacking boxes for awhile now, i will look to see what i have. I wonder do you happen to know if your allison's were of any relation to allison's in wilkes county GA in the 1830's?

it might take me some time to find the info but i will let you know of the tid-bits that I find ...or have and no where to connect them to.

Cori

Can you maybe help in any info on the Allison family I have listed below?

Fayette Adams & Isabel Allison

Fayette Adams was my great uncle-he is the son of Martha Adams and brother to my great grandfather Albert Adams.

Fayette married S. Isabel Allison on Feb 23, 1896 in White County Georgia. They had 3 children:

Willie Thomas born 1895 Clermont GA
Mary born 1901 Clermont GA &
E. Martha born 1909 Clermont GA. (E. Martha married Joe Nix).

Isabel Allison was born about 1874 in Kentucky. After attending the Allison Reunion in May in Georgia, I decided to dig and see what I could find out about the Allison line. I was pleasantly surprised as you will see. I had spoken to Michael Allison concerning this line and he seemed not to know about her.

I found she is listed in the 1880 census of Nacoochee, White County Georgia with her parents and siblings (and her twin brother).

Her father is Thomas J. Allison born in Georgia and her mother is Sarah A. Allison born in Tennessee. Their children are as follows:

Mahala born in Kentucky
George born in Kentucky
James born in Kentucky
Barbara born in Kentucky
Samuel (her twin) born in Kentucky
Sarah Isabel born in Kentucky
Ruthy born in Georgia &
Jasper born in Georgia

Thomas Allison parents were born in Georgia and Sarah A Allison parents were born in NC. More research is needed on this line, but I was excited to find this.

Trisha

He grew up at Rossie Priory, Inchture, Perthshire where his father was head plumber and then moved to London as a young man.He married Millicent Amelia RAYNER(?) or BARTLETT at Hampstead Parish Church on 10th September 1892. Subsequently he is alleged to have fled to America following involvement in insurance fraud (shipping insurance).

I would be grateful for any information about him particularly after 1892.

Thanks
Sue

Jane Scott ALISON

My great Aunt Jeannie was born 26th September 1871 in Dundee Scotland. As a young woman she went to Rio to nurse. She returned a rich widow(?) having supposedly married Mr Massey of Massey Ferguson. This is not actually true since his wife outlived him, but she certainly came back rich enough to marry again, support her next husband and launch three daughters into English society. So far I have been unable to find any records of her marriage(s).

Any information welcome

Re: Allison's from Tennesse to Texas

I am interested in the Freestone, Tx connection. My great grandfather, Edwin Thomas Allison was in Freestone county, Tx in 1870 with two small children, living with father in law, T. Y. Logan. We have emailed before but perhaps we have some connection in Freestone county. Can you give me dates when your Allisons were there.
