All from one page I had in a bible which belonged to my great gandfather. My "story" was published by the National Trust.

Regards

Stuart

Mystery Man, Mystery Birth - Harry ALLSOP b England abt 1898

I have to admit I have hit a serious road block. I have been looking for the birth certificate for Harry Allsop, sometimes known as Henry Harry Allsop, or Harry Alsopp, or Henry Albert Allsop for months now. The GRO have searched birth certificate records from 1894 to 1901, and found nothing. On the 1901 census, he is listed as age 3, along with his sister Nellie, who is also listed as age 3. I understand there is a possibility that his birth wasn't registered, but I guess I'm too stubborn to accept that.

Is there any advice anyone can give, to help me find some record of this man's birth? I am desperate to find some record of it, and in turn find some record of his death. I want to be able to tell my grandmother what happened to her father, that deserted her.

Please help if you can, with any idea, any advice, anything, no matter how small you may think it is. I'll appreciate any effor.

Actually, I think I may have a breakthrough on this. I'm considering the possibility that even though the census' say he was born in Birmingham, I suspect he may have been a twin of Nellie Allsop, born in King's Norton, Worcestershire. I've been able to find two birth records, one for Harry, the other for Nellie, in King's Norton. Both have a GRO reference of 6c 504!

I'm hoping this will solve the road block.

It would help a great deal if you would provide the details from the 1901 census, especially since it will state where in the world your ALLSOP was born and where the family lived.

Good luck!

Great response! The very first certificate I ordered for Harry Allsop was 6d 124. Sadly, it is the wrong person. Ah well, money wasted. But I did manage to track down someone with the wrong Harry Allsop's tree on Ancestry, and provided him a scan of the certificate.

The mystery continues! Thanks for the suggestion!

There is this birth entry which might fit:

1897 Oct-Nov-Dec
ALLSOP Harry, Birmingham, 6d 124

Seems a bit obvious for the GRO to have missed it however, and if Nellie was the same age, i.e. his twin, there is no corresponding entry for her, so it may not be the right one.

Christine

Advice on how to find a deserter, Harry Alsopp or Allsop

My grandmother's father deserted his family while she was a very young girl. She's never known him, or seen him. I know his name, I have the 1911 and 1901 census for him, a marriage banns and a marriage license. I know who his parents are, and his mother's maiden name. Is anyone willing to give advice as to what methods I could use to go about finding out what happened to him? My goal is to find out what happened to him, and to acquire a picture of him so that my 87 year old Nan can see her father.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small!

Al

It's hard to say if he was. I suspect he was born around 1897. On his marriage banns, he was listed as 21 in March of 1920. In April of 1911 he was 11, and in March of 1901 he was 3 years old. On two census' he is Harry Alsopp and Harry Allsop. On his marriage banns he is Henry Harry Allsop, while on his son's birth certificate he is Henry Albert Allsop.

Oddly enough, he has many siblings - six brothers and six sisters, but they've all been very difficult to trace.

I have tried to find a record of death, and have seen some possibilities, but without a definite birth date, and the variations of name, it's a bit difficult. Because he deserted his family, it makes it possible he could have moved anywhere else in England, and not stayed in Lambeth.

He's a slippery one.

Hi Al

Would he have been of the right age to have fought in the First World War? Service records from that era can be a useful means of moving forward in time from the 1911 census.

Did he have siblings whose descendents you might be able to trace?

Have you tried the obvious and looked for a record of his death?

Caroline

Robert Peter Allsop

I am trying to find the burial details of my Great-Grandfather Robert Peter Allsop who died in Romford during the Oct-Dec quarter of 1945, (Free BMD Ref: Romford 4 a 511). I strongly suspect he was buried in the Crow Hill, Romford Cemetery. The last address I have for him is 107 Marlborogh Road, Romford, Essex, (source 1911 Census RG14PN9828 RG78PN520 RD191 SD1 ED4 SN55).
I have been told by a relation that Robert's wife Georgiana Allsop, (nee Burton) died in 1931 and was buried in what he calls a "Family Grave" in Romford Cemetry in grave W44, but I do not have confirmation of this. The burial date for Georgiana is, so I believe, 12th. Feb. 1931.

I believe that there is a cd rom of burials in the Crow Hill Cemetery, if anyone has a copy could they please do a look up for me? Or is there any kind soul who could locate the grave of either Robert or Georgiana—they may well be the same grave.

Many thanks for any help on this one.

Andrew Allsop

Sarah Elizabeth Allsop Married Thomas D. Tennery of Illinois, USA 1850's

Hello,

After looking at the all the messages already posted, I think I have some cousins out there I would love to trade info with. This is what I know. My great-great-great-granmother was Sarah Elizabeth Allsop from Belper, Derbyshire Co., England. Sarah came to Illinois in 1848. When Abraham Lincoln was a young lawyer, he rode all over the state of Illinois, trying cases in different courts. In May 1850, he tried a case between Sarah Allsop and Spurgeon in Shelby Co., Illinois. Lincoln was the lawyer defending Spurgeon.
Sarah sued Spurgeon for slander and won the case. In case you are wondering, Sturgeon had publicly called Sarah and her sister “whores” and adulterers. During the course of the case, Sarah Allsop married Thomas D. Tennery. Lincoln lost the case and Spurgeon was forced to pay $500 to Sarah. I would love to trade pictures and information with anyone else who has information. I have pictures of Thomas D. Tennery with Sarah and pictures of their daughter Flora. I can be reached at N2framing@msn.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Joel Lively

Hello Mike,
In my genealogy records, there is a George ALLSOP who married Allie (Alice) CAIN. Alice Jones was married to Ellas Cain first, then remarried George Allsop. Around 1900 George and Alice lived next door to her sister, Mary Ann (Jones) JEPPESON
and the obit indicates that Owen JONES (Alice & Mary's father) came to live with them and he died around 1901 or so. They lived in Valpariso, Indiana. I how a possible birthdate for George as 1866 and a possible death of 1958. Does any of this match your records?

Cathie

George Allsop Soldier 1901 from Sheffield / Barnsley

My Great Grandmother Charlotte Allsop ( nee grey) is listed on the 1901 census as being on a government allowance , husbabd soldier. At this point she has two sons, George aged 5, and Mark still an infant less than 1 year.
Ther are living in Sheffield. Her husband's name was George, and they were married in 1889 or there abouts.
At some point between 1901 and 1905 (or there abouts) My Great Granny split from her husband, and took up with my Great Grandad . scandalously they never married but did produce about 4 children including my grand-dad, and lived happily together as man and wife until they died and were burried together in the family plot. However all of her children carried her married name, the name of Allsop. On
I have always been curious about the man who's name we hold, but who's DNA we do not share.
If anyone has any info about what happend to him after the split I would be very interested.
the 1911 census my great granny and grandfather and all their children plus Mark are listed but the eldest child george who would have been 15 in 1911 is not. If any one has any info on him it would be great also.
