My Alsford ancesters all came from Portsea, my grandfather; Samuel Charles b 19/7/1876 his father was Samuel James b 1/11/1845 he married his cousin Charlotte Alsford who had a twin Joseph b 16/12/1852. Samuel James died at sea and so Samuel Charles & sister were raised in a naval orphanage. Samuel Charles married Agnes Sarah Grubb in Portsea. my grandfather joined the marines and then transfered to the navy he retired after 23 years as a Warrent Officer. I do not have much more on them is this the same line?

Terry, and I surely remember each other but Ronnie and the others were pretty young when I left England and came to Canada, I got married here and we have been here since 1967. I have thought many times to try and contact your Mum but never seemed to make contact after my Mum passed away. It would be lovely tohear how you all have got on in your lives. with naval honours the body of stoker j f alsford was removed from hartlepool to london this morning for burial.
the cortege from the mortuary to the railway station was headed by the band of the yorks, and amongst those present were chief officer may, the senior naval officer of the tees, and a number of naval men.

there is also a tragic death report dated 02 august 1915 and an inquest report dated 03 august 1915 regarding william alsford. any researcher who wants the reports please reply to: grendav2001@yahoo.co.uk

My grand mother´s name was Edith Alice Alsford, married to Alfred Wey. My father was Peter Wey. My grand mother had a brother named George and two sisters. I don´t know their names. Probably Elizabeth and Susan, I am not sure. She was born in Oxford.

The birth of Annie Maria ALSFORD was registered at Alderbury 1Q 1876 Vol 5a Page 199.She was born Fisherton Anger, the daughter of Charles ALSFORD and Martha TROLLIP

She married Joseph SHORT 4Q 1898 at Salisbury Vol 5a Page 438

Other information:

"born 8 Dec 1875 and baptised Fisherton Anger 5 Mar 1876. In the 1881 census is shown living at Highfield,Fisherton Anger.In the 1891 census is shown as aged 15 living at the Orphange of the Sisters of Bethnay,Boscombe, Hants.She was married, aged 21, on 26 Dec 1898 to Joseph SHORT, age 22, son of Joseph SHORT at St Martin's Church, Salisbury. In 1901 census they are at 11 Chapel Place, Fisherton Street, Salisbury. They had eight children Florence b 1899, Leonard b 1901 - d 1962, Alice Annie b 1902- d 1935, & George W b 1911, May E, Albert F and Albert L.

My great grandmother was Annie Maria Alsford she lived in Fisherton Anger, Salisbury. I think her mothers name was Martha but could be wrong she was from Fisherton Anger also, so it's more than likely they are closely related to your Alsfords.By 1901 she was married to a Joseph Short and had her first daughter Florence Short.

ALSFORD - Fisherton Anger & Salisbury Wiltshire

In the 1841 census at the New Town Farm, Fisherton Anger are John ALSFORD, born ca 1798, Whiteparish, Wilts and his wife Alice.

They have four children living with them Uriah, aged 16?,(christened Salisbury 29 Nov 1932) James aged 12, (ca 1828),John, aged aged 10, (ca 1830)and Lewis, aged 6, (ca 1835).

Uriah went to Leicester and in 1861 census was married to Mary, a dressmaker,and living at 55 Lee Street, Leicester. They also lived at Kirby Mallory and Market Bosworth. There are five children Sarah Ann ca 1862, John henry ca 1863, Percy ca 1865, Ernest William ca 18968 and Uriah George ca 1871

James was christened at Fisherton Anger 15 Feb 1929. In the 1891 census a James ASLFORD, coachmaker, of Fisherton Anger, aged 64, is in Alderbury Workhouse.

Nothing further is know of John.

Lewis was christened 9 Jul 1835 in Salisbury. Nothing further known

In the 1851 census John & Alice are shown at Fisherton Street, Alderbury with Lewis, now aged 15, a basketmaker. In the 1871 census they are at Church Street, Alderbury

The family seemed to have also used the spelling ALLSFORD

Is anyone researching this family please?

Thomas ALSFORD, habadasher City Road London

At the Old Bailey on 13th July 1808 Elizabeth Mary HEWITT was found not guilty of stealing three pairs of stockings from the shop of one Thomas ALSFORD, habadasher and hosier in City Road, London

Thomas's daughter, Catherine ALSFORD, was a witness at the trial.

I can find no record of Thomas or Catherine.

Any assistance would be gratefully received

ALSFORD Samuel - Highway Robbery 1789

On 9th September 1789 Samuel ALSFORD, a private(?) of the First Regiment of Guards, was convicted at the Old Bailey, London of stealing a base metal watch gilt with gold, a seal, a handkerchief and three guineas and thirteen shillings from a gentleman at Scotland Yard in London. He was sentenced to transportation for seven years.

I cannot find any trace of this Samuel

Can any one provide any further information please?

Frederick c1974, Beaconsfield mar Clara Jane DAVIES (no date) lived Stoke Poges

Jack c 1901 mar Gladys GIBSON 1927 Eton Dist (lived Slough?)

Margaret Eva birth recorded 1928 Eton Dist

I note that there appear to be only two children from this marriage

I have a note Gladys ALSFORD or GIBSON marrying 1951 4Q Eton District to Herbert C MELLOR Vol 6a Page 703.

I also have a record of a Jack born ca 1901 death recorded in Uxbridge 1960 2Q 5f 112

So it is possible that there was a divorce in this marriage

The family line emenates from Samuel ALSFORD about 1760/1770 and his wife Ann in Portsea Island, Hampshire

I have been very remiss and not replied for sooooo long! Guilty as charged. I haven't done a lot on the family tree until recently as I have been rather busy.

However, I should have replied at the time, my apologies.

The grocer in my family was a Alfred Butler not the Alsford whose daughter married into the Alsfords.

My 4xGreat Grandmother was Harriet Alsford,baptised 1809 at St.Mary's,Portsea,Hampshire.She married Richard Webb in Alverstoke,Hampshire in 1829.Her parent's were Samuel Alsford, baptised 16 Mar 1794, St.Mary's,Portsea, married Ann Maria Roff in 1811 and died in Portsea 1871.Samuel's parent's were Samuel Alsford and Ann Squance who were married in Exeter,Devon.Is anyone else researching this line?

Hi Marty, Hope you are keeping well. I have confirmed Franics as being born in 1857 from 1901 Census but placed in Gerrards Cross in Bucks (about 4 - 5 miles from Chalfont St Giles). His father, William, was born in 1810 as far as I can tell. Do you have any further information please?

Unfortunately not, as my line come from the Buckhamshire area such as Gerrards Cross, Hedgerley etc. in the late 1700's early 1800's. My Great Grand Parents moved to Portsmouth in 1902 and had a Grocers shop.

Now that I am back at home and have checked my papers I can see that the Francis Alsford that you mention is not the one I'm looking for.

Francis, born in 1857 in Gerrards Cross, married Charlotte Russell (b 1857) on 25 July 1875 in Soho, London, daughter of William and Mary.

Maybe related a few gens before that. Thanks anyway.

In the 1881 cesus, there is a Major Alsford reported as being born in 1874. Living at St Georges In The East Industrial School in East Ham.

Francis born 27-2-1857 at Chalont-St-Giles to William and Sophia, nee Gurney, Alsford, one of ten kids from the marriage.

I also have William's parent's details if you want them
