Hi. I have just started ancestry.com and I'm not very familiar with it yet. My married name is Altvater. My husband's name is Frank William. His mother is Anna Altvater. Grandmother was Vivian Altvater and Grandfather was Charles Altvater. Right now I'm not sure when Charles passed away, but my husband thinks it was around 1958 or 1959. Their children are: Dorothy, Anna, David, another Charles.

Please let me know if this helps any. There may be some information that I could get from you if it does. Thank you.

Jackie Altvater

Allen -

I would have replied earlier to your posting, but I am still learning my way around the ancestry.com site and couldn't find it.

I don't have some of the information with me, but it's on my computer at home. I will email you a file I typed up from some Kretschman Family documents which were put together for the occasion of the 50th Kretschman family reunion. This was submitted to the PA Historical Society, which is where I encountered it. The xerox copy I have at home has some very indistinct photos, but it also has some handwritten lineages for the 13 children. I did not copy those into the document, but will do that and mail it to you.

Some of the information in this document may not be entirely accurate. For example, my great-grandfather Edward Adolph is described as a dentist and a woodcarver, which is correct, but he was also a bronze sculptor and made many portraits. Two of his bronzes are at the Gettysburg battlefield, and one of them is at the National Cemetery there. So there's probably some other information missing as well. The notes do mention his and Pauline's brother, George Otto. He was in the 114th PA Infantry during the Civil War, and survived the war.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any information about the Kretschman reunions happening in recent years. I went to them as a kid, and one more time in about 1971 when my son was young. Since then, I've lost touch. I have a few old photos from the reunions, but although they are from the early 1900s, they would have been after Pauline had died.

One other document I have at home is a short handwritten set of notes done by Edward for an autobiography. Most of it would not be of interest, but he does have a little bit in there about their home in Germany and his and Pauline's parents which you might like to read. I also have a photograph of their parents, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. I can scan that in and send it to you - it's also at home.

Ann Ritter

She was my great, great grandmother.
I know that she died in an "old folks" home in Philapelphia, PA in May 1892, but have been unable to get a death certificate and have been unable to determine where she was buried.

I did not know that she had any siblings.
I do have some information about the Kretschman family. I'm a descendent of Edward Kretschman, who was a brother of Pauline. There used to be a Kretschman family reunion every year - the last one I went to was about 1971. Since then we've lost track of all of Kretschman relatives. My information is somewhat about Pauline's parents, and then Edward and his descendents. If any of that is of interest to you, let me know.

Looking for his parents. Found John and family in 1900, 1910 and 1920 census for Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. His parents both born in Germany. In 1900 they lived in the Allegheny City 3rd Ward. City directory has some of them ]not always the same ones]living at 1629 Hatteras over a very long period of time. Was hoping I would see John C. in the 1880 census but no luck. There must be 10 ways to screw up reading/writting Altvater.

During the 1880-81 period, there might have been 3 Christian Altvaters in St. Louis. Not sure of exact arrivals.

I'm researching a different Altvater branch, but know something about the others....trying to connect them. Anyway, Christian J Altvater and his wife Bertha Neimuth came in 1881. His widowed father Christian (b. 1826) came at the same time. There was a 3rd Christan who married Maria Schuette......they lived on John Ave. until after the 1930's. Not sure of the date of arrival on Christian H., but 1881 or 1882.

So far I have found only 6 Altvaters in St. Louis in 1880.
Conrad, Lewis, Caroline Altvater Gugisberg, Fred and Fredericke Altvater. I can't prove any of them are related except for Fred and Fredericke and they are brother and sister.

I'm thinking Christian J.'s mother might have been a Rathert. Check the burial listing for Concordia Cemetery....it's on-line.

Jackie Maurer

John Conrad Altvater 1826 Hessen-Darmstadt>Manhattan
John (Johann)Conrad Altvater born 1826 in Hessen-Darmstadt (Ger) and married to unknown ...

Arrived in New York sometime before 1854
Children of John C. Altvater include:

Frank b. 1854 / New York
Louis b.1855 / New York
John C. b.1859/ New York
Henrietta b.1860/New York
Kate b.1863 / New York
Henry b.1865 / New York
Charles b.1867 /New York
Amelia b.1872 / New York
William b.1874/ New York
Harry b. 1878 / New York
Edward b. 1882 /New York

1870 Census lists family under Conrad Altvater age 43 and Kate Altvater age 73 (? Conrad's mother perhaps?)

1880 lists family under John C. Altvater, age 52 alond with wife Lena, age 36.

William (Wilhelm)Altvater b. 1874 is the son of John C. Altvater and Lena Reider. He married Kate Schilling .

William and Kate Schilling had children;
William 1895
Walter 1896
Edward 1901

There may be other siblings...

Edward married Loretta R. ODell. Their children were
Lorretta 1925
Richard
Eddie

I would like to hear from connecting lines. It looks to me like John C. Altvater 1826 could have been married before Lena Reider, as she would have been too young to be mother to several of these children, and Kate would have been 30 yrs older than John. When John C. Altvater (1859) married, only his father was listed as parent. He married Mary Clancy, dau of Hugh Clancy, Oct 08, 1881 in Manhattan.

ALTVATER, William & STEINOWER, Matilda; San Francisco; 1906

I am researching for a friend who has very little data.
His grandmother was Matilda (Steinower ?) Altvater - spouse of William Altvater. Her maiden name was something like STEINAUER - STEINOWER - STEINHAUSER.

Matilda and William Altvater lived in San Francisco when the 1906 earthquake hit. He had a printing business called Altvater Printing. His was one of the few printing businesses left standing, so the mayor of SF had him print up some proclamations stating how looters would be shot.

There was an Aunt Gertrude; however, we don't know if she was an STEINAUER or an ALTVATER. Also, the name of Iris has been found on the inside of a gold ring - again don't know if she is an Altvater or an Steinower.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Lenore
