Re: where does Amaya last name come from?

This is a Spanish and Portugese locational surname. Recorded in the spellings of De Amaya and more recently since the 18th century as Amaya without a prefix, it is locational. It originates from villages called 'Amaya' in Castille and Portugal, of which the original meaning is believed to be a 'pleasant place' or similar. The surname is ancient being one of the earliest recorded in the church registers of the Iberian Peninsula, Cristobal de Amaya appearing in the register of the Ronda, Guipuzcoa, Espana, on July 1st 1581, whilst Pedro de Amaya and his wife Maria Benglas, were recorded at the church of Nuestra Senora de la Antigua, Valladolid, Espana, on March 19th 1589. Whether these people are from the same family who were granted a coat of arms in Castille circa 1650, is not proven but seems likely. Locational surnames derive from two possible origins. The first is that the name refers to estates or manors owned by the nameholders, as with the prefix 'de' or the German 'von', a derivation which would seem to apply with this surname. The second possibility is that the name indicates a place where a person came from. It was often the usual practice in medieval times to call strangers by the name of their home city, town or village as easy identification. Manuel Amaya who married Maria Mascarena at Cadiz on March 4th 1871 is an example of a later recording, which could have originated from either source

I am looking for info on the Benito Amaya family. They were in the Santa Cruz area in 1870 and 1880. I believe their daughter, Maria Adelia Amaya married Joseph Larios and lived in San Francisco. I have the names of a couple of Benito and Rafaela's children but would love to have info on all of them as well as what became of Benito and Rafaela after the 1880 census. Actually, just about any info on the family would be helpful as I've had difficulty finding much of anything.

David: I was re-reading some of my old posts and came across this reply from you. We're talking about two different Jose Amayas. The one I was talking about in my original post died in 1844 in a fight with Indians on Mt. Hermon--almost 20 years before your Jose was born. Benito Amaya was the son of Jose Antonio Amaya and Maria Antonia Larios; one of their 10 children (that we know of). Benito, born in 1827, was my wife's third-great grandfather. Since first posting this message, I have learned that Jose Antonio Amaya's father was Jose Bastion Amaya and that his mother's name was Margarita Garlico. But that is all I know about them and have no information on who their parents might be.

David:

Benito was my wife's 3rd or 4th great grandfather. We located his grave several years ago. Our granddaughter's first name is Amaya.

We know a fair amount of the history--from research in the Sentinel and from contacts with others such as yourself, including a Larios cousin of about the same name. And there is a great deal of Larios information at Mission San Juan Bautista because the family was quite prominent in that region.

At some point, we might like to get copies of that research material, but neither my wife nor I speak or read Spanish. Anyway, it will probably be a few weeks before I have time to work on it, but I will email you a print-out of the information I have.

Steve

hi again. i was thinking about your interest in the amaya family, and thought of a few more tid-bits of info. the first amaya was a major domo at the presidio in monterey. if im' not mistaken, he boarded a ship in san blas mexio to get to the monterey bay area. i know of the larios connection . but i would have to consult with my cousin who has done extensive research of the family tree. she lives is santa cruz, and is a policewoman with the county. she also is spanish speaking. her name is julie amaya. she has photocopies from the santa cruz mission. i've read these with here and there is a ton of info. as births, deaths, and baptisms were recorded there. (it's in spanish of course). another person of interest is benito amaya. all of these people lived in what is now branciforte, which was the californiano part of santa cruz. if you would like to get in touch with me, my email address is davidlamar@hotmail.com i live in honolulu , hawaii. i grew up in santa cruz, and my mother still lives there. best wishes, david llamar

Re: Where does Amaya originate from?

Yes it is true - SPAIN. Here is a posting from Ivan C. Amaya:
Amaya dates back to the VIII century right at the convergence of the Visigoth Romans, and Basques on the Pyrenees on both sides of the mountain (please read "Amaya o los vascos del S. VIII" by Prof. Navarro Villoslada). Amaya name is deeply basque with branches all over Spain and the Americas a well.
Here is a posting from Pete Amaya:
The surname AMAYA is derived from the place named AMAYA, which is the name of a municipality in the province of Burgos in the north of Spain (Barcelona). Thus, the original bearer was simply identified as "one who originated from AMAYA". The Amaya's were also California Pioneers from 1542 to 1848.
I hope this helps and I have obtained this information from www.familyhistory.com Amaya message boards.

Most likely the Amaya were Basque, which means they were from a region in Spain close to France. They were a blend of those two countries. When the Spaniards conquered Mexico they also conquered all of of the southern region of Central Mexico as well as South America. That explains how your family from Honduras has the last name of Amaya. Before you search Spain ancestry first finish your next of kin to trace backwards - it will lead you on their trail.

Next of kin - Start with your parents information, then your grandparents (if you get stuck, search their siblings) then your great grandparents and they will lead you on a trail. You will see when you get records in your hands. Also create some files either electronic or folders. If you do electronic be sure to back up your work on a webpage (like Tripod.com or homestead.com, myfamily.com or rootsweb.com, etc.) so that if your computer crashes you can locate your records. Just don't forget about your website.

I would like to get a copy of the Amaya olos del siglo vlll by Navarro Villoslada. My grandchildren have the surname Amaya and we would very interested to learn more about their origin. We would appreciate any info. Thank you,

thank
