Hiram's parents were Thomas Bolling Amiss b. in 1785 and Susannah Brook(h)over married Aug 1, 1803. Her family was from Penn. but I have no further info on her.His parents were Thomas b. in 1732 and Rebecca Fletcher they were married in 1755.
I think it best if you contact the Hathaway Assoc. Joseph Amiss and wife Joyce are on page 760 of the 1970 Hathaway book. The numbering of the families is a little confusing but I do know Joyce is a desendant of Arthur Hathaway and not Nicolas Hathaway. Arthur's info begins on page 747. The genealogist on their website can provide you with the correct info or go to genealogy forum site listed on left side of screen. Their genealogist answers questions on that site.
Several months back a group of us Amiss/Burke descendents visited a small family cemetery near Amissville. The road it's now on is new and not on all maps. It's on Tin Cup Lane off Waterloo Road. I'm pleased to report the cemetery is in very good condition. You can see a couple of picture at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2...;

Anyone interested in joining a gathering in March '07 just let me know.

MILLER OBIT

From THE PAGE COURIER, Luray, VA., September 14, 1905

JOHN WILHOIT MILLER died at his home, Slate Mills, Rappahannock county, Thursday, September 7, 1905, while seated in his chair, on his porch, and apparently in good health. Mr. Miller was born April 10, 1809, in Madison county, (in sight of the oldest Lutheran church in America), of which his parents were members. Mr. Miller's recollection, which was unclouded to the day of his death, extended back to the time he was but three years old. The incident which impressed itself on his mind at that time was the home leaving of his father, Lieutenant Adam Miller, for Norfolk, with his company, In the War of 1812, Lieutnenant Miller never returned home. He died in service. The subject of this sketch was a prosperous planter, merchant and mill owner in ante bellum days, owning a hundred or more slaves, many of whom spent their last days in comfort under Mr. Miller's care after the war set them free. Mr. Miller was a deacon in the Slate Mills Baptist church, was temperate in his habits, deliberate in manner, loved the society of honest people high and low, and was an entertaining talker. He leaves the following children: Messrs, Oscar D. and James N. Miller, Mrs. Cora Green and Miss Fannie F. Miller, of Rappahannock county, and Mrs. Amiss, the wife of Dr. Amiss, of this place. Mrs. Amiss attended the funeral services, which were held at Mr. Miller's late residence, on Saturday, and will probably prolong her stay several weeks.

This is posted for information only. I am not connected to this family.

Philip was my step-son's great grandfather. My husband says he believes he was the sheriff in Dillwyn for many years. He lived to be 99 years old, death was 4/24/1977 in Richmond, Chesterfield Co, VA. He apparently was married twice, first wife unk and second wife was Eva mnu. He is buried in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery.

He had 8 children, outlived 2 of them.

You will find this family on the world family tree.

AMISS - HOPPER Connection: 1820s+ VA > ?1840+ OH? USA

I am researching the Hopper Family in Culpeper County and surrounding areas of Virginia.

Seeking information on the family of Mary A. (also known as Miriam) Hopper who married Joseph Amiss and had the following children: Mary A. b.abt.1825, Adaline b.abt.1827, John b.abt.1828, Ann b.abt.1829, Virginia b.abt.1832, Arbelia b.abt. 1834, and Harriet b.abt.1837.

I know Mary was the daughter of Joshua Hopper Sr. but know little about him and nothing about her mother. Have some limited info on Joseph's parents.

I do not where this family ended up. Believe they may have moved to Ohio after 1840.Any information on there ancestors and descendents would be greatly appreciated.
BUTLER Photo (Spartanburg, SC): ?possible connection to AMISS?

Jenny, would you happen to have a relative by the name of Hilton B. Butler? You mention your grandmother's second husband had a last name of Butler. My grandmother's name was Mary Lee Amiss (her married name was Sloan) and I found a picture amongst her belongings that no one in our family knows who it is, but on the back it says, "Hilton B. Butler, age 5 years". It also has a stamp that says it was developed in Spartansburg, SC. My grandmother's father was originally from Albemarle County, VA (right around the Charlottesville area) so I'm hoping you might be able to claim this photograph. You can view it at http://members.cox.net/pje/butler/hilton-butler-front.jpg and http://members.cox.net/pje/butler/hilton-butler-back.jpg

David, we've had previous discussions about Amiss lines in Va, and I found something that may or may not be relevant to this post. You mention a Effie Amiss Norvelle and I happen to have a newspaper article dated April 17, 1934 that mentions the suicide attempt of a Hilda Amiss. It mentions that she lived with her mother, an E.J. Norvell. This article was found in some of my grandmother's possessions but have no idea in what way she is related to me. Let me know if you'd like me to scan the article to send to you.

On his death certificate his wifes name was Katherine Winfree Griffin. The undertaker gave us the names of Carroll P Amiss as the one that maded the arrangements. I would like to know if we have family members there and like to write to them. So I can have pictures maybe of him and I have one of him, other sibbling and his mother before her death. My grandfather's name was Gerald Leo Griffin.
