Ester AMSTERDAM

Greetings;

According to his marriage certificate, my great grandfather, Samuel NEUWIRTH's mother's name was Ester AMSTERDAM. Though they give no specific information on this lady other than she was married to a man named Israel NEUWIRTH, her son was born in 1865 in Austria-Galicia.

if this name means anything to anyone, I'd surely appreciate it.

Jeffrey Leeds
shermann oaks, CA
USA

1880 US/NY Census: AMSTERDAM Family from Hungary

The 1880 US census (searchable here for free: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P... ) has only one family with the AMSTERDAM surname in the whole country. Their origins were Hungarian and, judging from the age and birthplace of the youngest child, they must have arrived in the US between 1876 and 1880. Also, unless sons were born into this family after 1880, the AMSTERDAM name would have died out in this family since all five of the children were daughters.

The census listing includes the following info --
Location: Manhatten, New York City, NY
Samuel AMSTERDAM, head, age 40, a tailor born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Amelia AMSTERDAM, wife 'keeping house", age 38, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Esther AMSTERDAM, dau "at home", age 15, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Helena AMSTERDAM, dau "at home", age 12, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Rebecca AMSTERDAM, dau "at home", age 9, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Helka AMSTERDAM, dau "at home", age 8, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary
Rachel AMSTERDAM, dau "at home", age 4, born Hungary, both parents born Hungary

I have no connection to this family nor do I have any further info about them. I am merely posting this info here in the hope that it may be of help to others. Regards, Andrea (admin for AMSTERDAM Surname Board)

Ashley,

It's possible that Rose and Lily were remote relatives of mine, though I don't know of any English Amsterdams in my family. I've done almost no genealogical research, so am in the dark. Thanks for your notice.

Diana Bloom, New York City

Diana

Whilst researching my family history I have discovered that my Great Great Aunt Rose Etgart, married one Herman Amsterdam in London in 1901. They had at least one daughter that I have been able to find so far, called Lily Amsterdam. The Etgarts came originally from Poland although Rose was born in London in 1883.

Its early days in my research, but please let me know if you think there is any connection?

Regards
