San Miguel De Los Anchondos was the community established by all of the Anchondo decendents. My maternal grandfather was Melquiades Anchondo born in Durango but brought to Chihuahua as a young boy. My paternal great grandparents were among the many peons practically owned by Luis Terrazas. My mother was born in Nombre De Dios Chihuahua, her parents being sheep herders at the Quinta Carolina in Nombre De Dios. I am very proud of my maternal last name because members of this great family were industrious and very hard working people who opened up many acres of land and performed very hard labor for this land lord who owned practically all of the state of Chihuahua.

Sorry I haven't replied. I find all this information very interesting. I am in fact Jenny's daughter. I am going to try to get by and see my dad and ask him about Arnulfo. I do know that he was around when my oldest brother was very young which would be in the early 1950s. I don't recall the cause of his death or the date of his death. Like I said I will try to find out more. my email is joann901@yahoo.com. If you would like to email me as well.

Since my last reply to you I have come across some information. I found a 1930 census sheet showing Feliciano as head of household and Arnulfo listed as one of his children living in his house. That makes what I said about Arnulfo wrong. I also found a death certificate for a sister of Feliciano. You may already have the information but I thought I would pass it along just in case. Phillip

Hello, again.
I know that Roberto was married twice; The second wife is Jeanie. She knows me. Are you her daughter? I was married to your cousin Raquel Anchondo aka Quelito, daughter of Carlos. She died in 2007. Since then I have not had any contact with the Anchondos. We did try to speak with your father several times but could never reach him for informaton on the family. Do you or your father have any information on Arnulfo? Let me tell you what I heard. First, he is listed in the 1927 El Paso City Directory. He does not show up in any City Directory after that. Supposedly he was killed in Juarez in a drug/alcohol gang war. Something like what is happening today. I have searched the Texas Death Records and he does not appear in them. That would suggest he did not die in Texas. Remember, this is only rumor, not fact, but that is what I was told when talking to people. Here is something else interesting. I found two Arnulfo Anchondos listed as being inmates at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary (Kansas) in 1931. I have not been able to find out anymore. If one of them is our Arnulfo, that would explain a lot of things. Arnulfo was born in 1902 in Mexico.
There needs to be somewho really dedicated to go to Chihuahua to look up the Anchondos. I hope I am not getting too personal in a public forum, but; I apologize for a long entry. I can't seem to write short notes. If you prefer to exchange information directly, my email address is phillipmarr2002@yahoo.com. Phillip

Feliciano and Maria had a total of seven children (that I know of) Carlos, Raul, Arnulfo,Carolina, Eva, Roberto and Rodolfo. I have seen the tombstones at Evergreen, but it has been many years. What would you like to know? If you have specific questions, I can try to find out as much as possible.

I don't have a lot of information but here is what I have:
Feliciano: born about 1879; Mexico; died April 29, 1934. He died of Acute Nephritis; buried in Evergreen Cemetery; Informant was Carlos Anchondo his son. According to Carlos, he did not know the name of Feliciano's father. Feliciano's mother was given as Juana de Anchondo. No maiden name. You may have heard about the village in Chihuahua once called San Miguel de los Anchondo. That is where Felicano was born.
Mario Rubio: born August 16, 1885; Chihuahua (probably the state, not the city; died March 24, 1953. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery; Placido Rubio, mother and Martina Chavez, both born in Mexico (probably Chihuahua); Informant was Raul Anchondo, son. She died of Mycardial Insufficency and Circulatory Collapse.
All this information is taken from Death Certificates for Feliciano and Maria. I have not found out any more about Placido or Martina.
Have you seen their tombstones at Evergreen? Do you know Roberto Anchondo, only surviving child of Feliciano and Maria? Could you tell me which of the sons you descend from?
If you have any information about these two I have not included, I would appreciate your sharing it with me. Let me hear from you again, anyway.

Re: Origins of Anchondo

According to Tibon, Gutierre, Diccionario Etimologico Comparado de los Apellidos Espanolas, Hispano-Americas, y Filipinos, editorial Diana, Mexico, 1988, p 16, the name Anchondo is Basque in origin. Vasco: aintzi: “aguazal” “cenegal” (marsh, fen y ondo: “lado,” “cerca.” In other words, “cerca del aguazal” or “near the marsh.” The original Basque spelling Aintziondo/Anziondo and is found in Guipuzcoa. The Spanish form was Ainciondo. The name can also be spelled: Anciondo/Anziondo and, of course, Anchondo. This might help you. Raquel passed away in 2007. I monitor her site from time to time as I am interested in the name Anchondo, also.
Phillip
Maria and Feliciano immigrated to the United States in 1907 and lived in El Paso, Texas until their deaths. Any information about Placido and Martina will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Estimable Srita. Anchondo:

Atentamente,

Carolina G.
I would like to add some of what my research has turned up.
The Anchondos arrived in Chihuahua, Mexico about 1800. Originally they came from Basqueland. The original basque spelling was Aintziondo/Anziondo. The Spanish form was Ainciondo. The name can also be spelled: Anciondo/Anziondo. The name means near the marshes. The name is found in Guipuzcoa. My family also came from San Miguel de los Anchondo. My grandfather migrated to El Paso, Texas about 1905. I am curious about why the name was changed among other things. Raquel
