I am looking for information and documentation concerning the birth, parentage and/or siblings of John Angus, aka John William Angus, aka John William Henry Angus (b.~1833, d. Dec. 3, 1885, buried Green-Wood Cemetery, NY). He was a shipwright by trade (probably the Navy Yards in Brooklyn, NY), married Ellen Merryweather Oct 19, 1856 in Brooklyn and had children John W (1859-?), Harriet (Apr 8, 1867-Nov 2, 1888), Julia (Sept 1869-?), Albert Edmund (Oct 1870-Apr 12, 1933), Frank Herbert (Jan 31, 1873-May 1939), Dewitt (Aug 31, 1875-Aug 1946) Lille May (~1879-Apr 27, 1880) and Edith M. (Oct 1881-?). Additionally, information as to the marriage, children and/or deaths of Julia Angus and/or Edith M. Angus would be appreciated, altho it is believed that Julia died before 1880; Edith is known to survived past 1910.

Hi Alison,

If you go to Australian Dictionary of Biography on google you will find a complete history of James Angus, he was the first born to James Angus and Elizabeth Culbert. James emigrated to NZ a decade before ( Alexander & David ) cutting all the railway sleepers and when he had finished moved to NSW did the same there.

cheers Stuart.

Very interested to read your posting. My husband's great grandfather is probably the Alexander Angus you mention who emigrated to NZ in 1878. He married Margaret Nicol in 1877 and they had ten children born in NZ. Didn't know of brother David emigrating but I think another brother, James, had emigrated to NZ in 1863 with wife Charlotte nee Moodie.
Alexander Angus was born 1/10/1843 in Blackford? and died in Christchurch, NZ in 1927. One of his daughters was named Elizabeth Cuthbert Angus. His youngest son, David, was my husband's grandfather.
According to our records James Angus snr married Janet Hutchison in 1824 and she died in 1834.
Until now we have thought James Angus snr must be Alexander's father or closely related but have not been able to confirm this.
Are you still interested in this family?
Angus of Pennsylvania beginning in Ephrata

It has been awhile since I looked on this board but I thought there was information about James Angus born between 1717 and 1735 probably in Scotland with son Jacob b. 1756 in Pennsylvania. I have a great deal of information on Jacob and some information on his father James but still do not know when James immigrated to America. Both were at Ephrata during the Am. Rev. and Jacob is cited as serving as a soldier. Both are on the war memorial at Ephrata. I have much more but there is no information on this board about either of them or their family lines. Has anyone ever been able to trace the origins of James Angus m. MARIJA ( Mary/Miriam) GORGAS?

I'm looking for information about my 4th great grandparents Janet Angus and John Robertson. I have very little to go on except that they had a son named David who was born about 1796 in Scotland. David married a Maggie Peddie 22 December 1825 in Inchture, Perthsire, Scotland. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: William Angus V.C.

William Angus V.C. who was born in 1888 and died 14 June 1959 is buried in Wilton cemetery in Carluke, Scotland. His wife Mary Nugent died 31 May 1968 at 74 years old. According to his death certificate his father was George Angus and his mother was Margaret (Malloy) Angus.
I believe I still have a photo of his gravesite and a photo of him I am willing to share with you if you would be interested. In terms of further information you might join scotslandspeople website - this website has all the old birth, death, marriage, census records, etc for Scotland. It doesn't cost anything to join, but to look at the actual records it costs 6 GBP for 30 credits (good deal). I know the information about William Angus VC because one of my uncles thought it was his grandfather, so I searched it out; even went to cemetery when I visited Scotland - turned out this William Angus wasn't my ancestor, but an interesting fellow. If you want the photos send me an email.
Geri

Both born in about 1834, had child William Angus in Elgin, Scotland in 1852.

For some reason (don't know from where!) we had 'Durham' as the birthplace for Robert ANGUS, but a 'Durham' in Scotland which as far as I know doesn't exist! (I now live in Scotland and no one has heard of it!)

I would love any information if anyone has on either Robert or his wife, Margaret (nee Mortimer).

My ancestors were Robert (1850-1928) & Anna Mary (McClelland 1853-after 1911) Angus both from County Down. Many children, several came to USA including my grandfather, Robert Angus. The others: Mary Jane, Eleanor, Alexander, Rebecca, John, Agnes and an unknown. Many born in Craigboy (maybe all). If you think there is any connection, I'd be happy to send more details.

Julie Angus McKeen
