Re: Ansell's in Michigan

My husband is Allen Paul Ansell. His father was Allen John Ansell, more commonly known as Manny. Manny lived in Garden as did his brothers Howard and Homer. I don't remember the connection they had to Adele Thill, but I did have some of her dandelion wine and it really kicked ***. I wish I could get my hands on some more. Fran Ansell was Manny's cousin and I think Adele may have been his mother (perhaps she divorced and became a Thill?) I will pull out the old paperwork we have and see if we can find other information. When Manny and his wife (my husband's mother) died, we inherited their home in Thompson and still own it. We live in lower Michigan, but go to Garden many times a year. We also stay in contact with an old family friend, Byron Hazel, who lives in Garden. He knows many of the older Ansells. I will ask him if he recalls Adelle Thill/Ansell. Maybe someone can remember her maiden name.

I know this is an old post, but thought I would add. Related on my mother's side to Mary Ann Ansell (31 Jul 1843 - 12 Feb 1945). She married to John Clutter Hoffman, I don't have a date for that yet. They lived in Lagrange County, Indiana for awhile where John was a farm laborer and then a school teacher. They later moved back to York County PA (Where John Hoffman was from). Jane Ansell, Mary Ann and John are buried together in Greenmount Cemetery in York, York County PA.

Hi Janet,
Have you thought about searching for him as just Ernest Ansell. In the 1901 and 1911 census he is transcribed as Ernest.
Some time ago I found a marriage of a Thomas E. Ansell to Emma E. Hartnett in New South Wales in 1923. It may be he went to Australia as there were other Ansell family there. Just something that I may try to follow up on.

Marg

Hello,

My relative, Thomas Ernest Ansell, was born in Oct. 1898 in Vancouver British Columbia Canada.

I have him in a Vancouver city directory in 1920 but after that he disappears.

No marriage, no death found so far in Canada, UK, US, or Australia, no military service.

Anybody seen him after 1920? (or any suggestions of where I might look?)

Thanks.

Janet

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the information! Certainly havent been doing a lot of the Thew Ansell research this past year as have been distracted doing my partners family tree and other branches of mine. It is good to get back on track with the ansells as I havent been looking at the ancestry threads for a very long time. Have been distracted as I now find small amounts of time to do research as I have a 17 mth old son who keeps me busy as you can imagine. Lucky for me he's asleep right now, lol.
Must check out that photo you mentioned at some point. I cant remember how I came about the information (is somewhere in my old notes) but Sydney Bertram Ansell died 29/12/1959 in Carlton (Melbourne), Victoria, Australia. Dont know much more about him yet except that he was married to Jane nicholls in Birmingham in 1918 and she also died in Carlton, Victoria. So maybe immigrated after this?

Belinda

A mystery?

In my Tweed Tree a Daniel(Twidd) Tweed Abt 1641,( Merrchant of London - St leonards, Shoreditch ) who 19 May 1668 by Facualty Office Licence Married one Dorothy Sawyer, made his Will 25 Sep 1668.
The third bequest was "to my esteemed UNCLE COL WILLIAM ANNCELL".
I have been chasing this William, as I believe the relationship is on his wifes side, as nothing is known of her family thus far. i was hoping he would provide a catalyst for further research and discoveries.

I believe this is the William Ansell concerned

The Parliamentary Army under the Earl of Essex
14 September 1642
The Troops "Each Troop consisting of 60 Horse; besides 2 Trumpeters, 3 Corporalls, a Sadler, and a Farrier.":
1 Captain: The Lord General
Lieutenant: WILLIAM ANSELL ..

....by 1668 a Colonel???.

I have noted a lot of Ansells around Essex and my Daniel Tweed was of Suffolk stock.

Anyone know of this Willam all help appreciated.

Clifjade

I know that your original message on the Ansell family was posted quite a while ago, so I hope this gets to you. I am a direct descendant of Jacob Ansell & Nancy Ann Joy (thru their son, Malachi William Ansell, his daughter Lettie Lorena Ansell Phillippo, her son Ulysses Ansell Phillippo, his daughter Brenda Phillippo Woolridge to me, Alicia Woolridge Morgason.

I would be happy to share what information I have on the Ansell family. If you ever get the chance to visit the Summitt Grove Cemetery in Kampsville, Calhoun Co., IL - it would be well worth your trip! I would say that at least 70% of the older section of the cemetery is Ansell, Cloninger, and Foiles families. I descend from for the Ansell and Cloninger lines - as Malachi William Ansell married Margaret Ann Cloninger, who was his first cousin (Margaret was the daughter of Margaret C. Joy, sister to Nancy Ann Joy). I have photos of all the Ansell, Cloninger, and Foiles graves (but not digital copies,...will have to scan if you want any of them). I would love to correspond with you about the Ansell & Clonginger families!!
Alicia Woolridge Morgason
abcm191c@one-eleven.net

Hi Rachel - sorry no pictures of Anne Vashti Ansell. I did get a copy of the marriage certificate. Richard Edward Honey was married to Anne Vashti Ansell on 4th Jan 1893 in the The late Countess of Huntingdon's Chapel, North St, Brighton - this building no longer exists. Details were Richard Edward Honey, bachelor, age 28. Father Joseph Honey, butler.
Anne Vashti Ansell, spinster, age 24. Father George Ansell, publican.
The place of residence for both Richard & Anne was 14 Edward St, Brighton.
The witnesses were Mary Bertha Ansell, M E Ansell (Minnie Esther Ansell) & Geo Edw Ansell.
I believe that your link is via Minnie Esther Ansell - can you share with me any information regarding this link?

Martin
Hiya Rachel, I am back as promised If you had the same(more or less)earlier, then that cos thought I had lost last draft

Since my response to you I have been communicating with Belinda from Oz who had picked up the same 'thread' as yourself a
bit later in connection with her family tree as above, said as on 'Tribal pages' I managed to look up the Ansell section of her
tree and we have managed to establish common ancestors as George John Ansell b1859??? marriage to Theresa Isabe(la) Thew in 13/10/1878, Aston,Birmingham,Warwickshire,UK and this ties in fairly well with everything I have after that date
(Winifred Emma Ansell b 1904 on my side wrote Theresa Thew her grandmother was Italian extraction derived from Thue,Thuino)

Belinda had given the birth of George John Ansell b 1859 as being in Mile End with father as James Ansell - this being the only one she could find I had that birth certificate but John George Ansell and put it in my 'dead' file for reason the location not in accord with the rest of those Ansell records being in Aston,Birmingham At the same time on the marriage certificate of George John Ansell(also shown as john George or George in Birmingham censor records) toTheresa Isabel(la)Thew, the father of George John Ansell shown as James I also had the marriage certificate for the 1859 George John Ansell father James in my 'dead' file for reason that also in Mile End London/Liberty of the Tower of London Maybe it needs looking at again?? George John Ansell /Theresa isabel(la)Thew son recorded as George james with his son recorded as George james likewise

Thus at this time I/we have been unable to go back confidently with anything than the marriage of George John Ansell/Theresa Isabel(la)Thew in 1878 so cannot get back to your George Ansell in 1837 - that still missing in my records, but there could of course be a 'link' If you can descend down from your George Ansell this then might show some sort of 'link'

Hope that helps in some way Bye for now whiteknight/briansell

Hello again, been a lovely day weather-wise for most of day - full sunshine Sun going down now at 20.30hrs and should go down slowly with light fading away till about 22.00hrs - twilight evenings This doesn't normally happen in Oz as I recall

Going back to the firm Ansell's - the main one I know is Ansell's the brewery firm of Birmingham who were really big in the
north of England and the Midlands Not so big these days as the whole brewing industry is changing in shape Will give them a go on the Internet and see what turns up(Hmmm Royal Warrent loo paper eh, cant get it out of my head - only joking)

Just decided to fill in that blank you made mention with George James Ansell(1) He married for a second time to
Elizabeth Sarah Hancox at Stratford upon Avon and they Lived in Leamington Spa Auntie Winnie went to live with her
father/step mother There was a further sibling Constance Irene(Auntie Connie) b 1910 whom I met once at Auntie Winnie Funeral - said as didn't get married as she a mannequin but I see that Auntie Winnie actually says she did get married to
Leslie Hemmings in Leamington Spa Oh I see Winifred Emma b 1904 says she was born Leaminton Spa too???
although says her mother Emma Jane Garbett died aged 26 years You have record of Elizabeth Sarah Hancox marriage to George James(1) as in 1909 when Auntie Winnie would have been 5years - she told me personally that George James(1) came
back to Aston to pick HER up(and her brother George James (2) but brother was hiding behind the settee as he wanted to stay
with his grandfather George John Ansell, so only Auntie Winnte taken back to Leamington Think then Auntie Winnie probably born in Aston, birmingham same as everyone else

Just as an aside, the story through MY family goes that George James(1) married three times and the last one was 'young' and ALL HIS MONEY went to her(funny there is always a lost money fortune story in every family) I wonder then if this wife(3) was your Annie Sullivan - sounds possible eh?

Just seen that Auntie Winnie says that Theresa Georgina(Ena)Ansell was the auburn haired one in THAT generation - Cor she
got a fascination about her auburn hair(must go and see the Opera Carmen!!!! - only joking) Bye for now briansell

Hiya again Belinda, obviously me not busy today so....Been very warm and sunny lately and deep blue skies just like Oz that I hadn't seen since I was young lad in London - made me nostalgic both ways

Forgot to say that I do have copy of Theresa Isobel(la) marriage certificate to George John(1878), as well as George James Ansell(1) birth certificate(1879)as well as George James Ansell(1)marriage certificate to Emma Jane Garbett(1900) Pretty well 'solid' that this is 'our' joint Theresa Isabel(la) Thew Can't remember from which source someone told me once that name could be Thu rather than Thew phonetically That does tie in with my Aunt Winnie suppositions regarding HER grandmother as written down by her Thue(Thuino) Tried to check typical Italian family names - no find Thuino

Then again with YOUR Thew connections, assume you may have that spelling Thew from an earlier source than mine
However from my end Theresa marriage certificate shows it as Thew and father as George Thew - however cum George James Ansell(1) birth certificate still shown as Thew BUT Theresa signature given as X so she couldn't write anyway AND
her marriage certificate shows George Thew(deceased)so he was no help then in how his Thew name spelt, so COULD
be a phonetic spelling through Theresa BOTH times Certainly Elizabeth Thew mother of Theresa Isabel showing as Thew too???along with hubby George Thew and BOTH born in B'ham(so says Birmingham History Forum)

On Theresa Thew marriage certificate(112 1878) it shown she and George John living in Washwood Heathe Road(B'ham)
George John shown as carpenter with James Ansell(Father) as Bellhanger Whilst George Thew(Father)shown as Bricklayer as you had already said Going on to George John again as you said his father then JAMES Ansell(ties in with Mile End man at this stage???) Witnesses to marriage Eliza Sarah Ansell and George Ashford(Thinks, I sure just typed an Eliza this morning??

going on to George James(1) b 1879 then father shown as George Ansell only(carpenter) - George John and Theresa Isobel then living at Court 26 Lichfield Road, Aston Manor, B'ham Theresa Isobell still showing as Thew

Coming then to George james(1)marriage certificate(426 1900) to emma jane garbett, it shown as John George(Father) who carpenter, so seems George John,George and John George are interchangeable as you said George John(1)showing
as storekeeper living 27 Argyle Stree,B'Ham and Emma Jane Garbett at 86 Coockoo Road,B'Ham -with George Garbett(father)
as Blacksmith This at St Cl;ements Church, Nechells,B'ham This time the Witnesses were Alfred Garbett, Florence(Isabel?) Ansell and Gertrude(Theresa?) Ansell(sisters?),William P Maltby

Lastly Birmingham History Forum gave me details of 'Absent Voters List' (whatever that is)for Birmingham

1918 George J Ansell 191122,Gnr.L Bty,16AA Sec,RGA(Royal Garrison Regiment 105.Nechells Place.Saltley,Birmingham

1920 John George Ansell, Theresa Isabel Ansell(60), Sidney Ansell(Sydney?)

1925 Theresa Isobel Ansell(65), Edgar Trotman - (lodger???)

1930 Theresa Isobell Ansell(70),John Mullins,Mary Ann Mullins -(lodgers???) still 105.Nechells Place .saltley.Birmingham

Don't know what it all means, but affords another 'contact' point for Theresa Isabel Ansell nee' Thew Bye 4 now briansell

Hiya Belinda - did manage to see family tree on tribal pages, thanking you Couldn't work out 'which town' on password so only got so far It is pretty certain that we do have the same common ancestor Teresa Isabel (Isabella) Thew and she married to George james Ansell - it all ties in My notes tie in with yours regarding Sydney Ansell going to Australia

Looked up my 'dead' file for John George Ansell and as said I had dismissed it a/c location I have THAT birth certificate for March 1859 and parents marriage cetificate for 1850 as follows:

Mile end old town/county of Middlesex(now right in middle of London)
No. 345 b 26 Feb 1859 6½ Thomas street John George(boy): Father - James Ansell Journeyman millwright :Mother- Eliza Harriet Ansell(her X mark) 6½ Thomas street

1850 The Parish Church in the Parish of Holy Trinity in the 'Liberty' of the Tower of London
No - date 15 April 1850 James Ansell(of full age - batchelor)/Eliza Harriet Green(of full age-spinster
rank - millwright/ - residence 1 Norfolk Street,Commercial Road/1 Richmond Street,Walworth
Father' s names - William Ansell(Millwright)/John Green(Merchant clerk) Witnesses Patrick Heyns, Harriet Glasbey

AS I said b4, didn't seem to have the same sort of 'threads' to my mind so dissmissed it More likely candidate seemed to me to be September 1859 6d 259 John Ansell b Aston,B'ham,Warks(warwickshire) which I did no follow thro'
at the time(1982)

Was surprised that my Auntie Winnie left off her list of Theresa/George children the name of Florence and yet
took the trouble to say Leonard died 'in industry' and that Georgina 'had a lovely voice/own business'

Just noted for first time that Auntie Winnie reference to THUINO family name does list as Theresa THUE(not Thew)
Also see that she actually referred to Auburn hair(and NOT ginger as I said), which seems a bit more Italian - that
being her Grandmother of course

Birmingham History Forum gave me New Bartholemew Street as the Italian Quarter of B'ham, also, Digbeth/Deritend
where quite a few Italian families mainly 'looking glas' makers and plaster figurine makers As an aside there was
the BBC TV programme 'who do you think you are' for Susan Sarandon who found she had italian ancestry and ended
up in this little village inItaly which was the world centre for plaster figurine makers(many males emigrated to America

ps: now understand Y you seem to be sitting up all night on Internet(time coming thro')

Bye, briansell

Hi, Belinda That was bit of a surprise George John Ansell b 1859 London? a/c had a John George listed March 1859 Mile End(1c 569) but location put me off - have his b certificate somewhere in my 'dead' box - had John James Ansell, Ampthill next line and John Ansell, Aston in Sept(6d 259) There yer go then Could explain why said George John used too visit George James (2) i Great Eastern Street London, E which only a stonesthrow from Mile End/Brick Lane/spitalfields fruit market via commercial road(thought it from B'ham and maybe then visiting old stamping grounds at same time) Dont know about the loo paper never seen it down this end - thats a bit of one upmanship doncha think, having yer own personalised loo paper - hope it has a royal warrant too No, nearest I have got is my Aunt Winnie from B'ham(Theresa Isobela's grandaughter) trying to tie the family in with the big Brewing Family At the same time this Aunt Winnie said she had read a book about Colonel Sir Mike Ansell who used to organise the Horse Show at Olympia, London(yer mum will remember this maybe)was related in some way through two brothers in the Warwickshire area Got his book out of the library and thought ah that will tell me his history - silly me, it starts off "I remember when I was a boy in India with my father in the army, yeah, big help, I wanted to know about before that....? Did do a sidetrack on Colonel Mike Ansell(if Aunt Winnie was right)and found he related to General Picton killed at Waterloo as Duke Wellimgton sidekick, and related to royalty before that - trouble is the bit in the middle missing Was it yourself I told that same Aunt Winnie said to me Theresa Isobela had red hair and that §gone through the genes to Aunt Winnie herself(was grey when I saw her)

My info on George Thew/Elizabeth came through the Birmingham History Forum as follows

Birmingham Directories 1888-1892 Elizabeth Thew(Mrs) - Shopkeeper, Holborn Hill, Nechells, Birmingham(not listed 1887 or 1892)

1891 Census Elizabeth Thew(Widow) age 66 - Shopkeeper,Holborn Hill,Nechells,Birmingham b Birmingham
(Son) age 31 - living same address - edge tool maker

(From other) John George Ansell(F) age 32 - Cat Hill?
Theresa Isabela nee' Thew 33
George J age 11
Florence age 9
Gertrude T age 6
Vesta H(Hilda?) age 4
Leonard I age 2

1881 Census Elizabeth Thew(Widow) - 1 Lorne Terrace,Argyle Street,Birmingham

1878 Marriage George John Ansell/Theresa Isabel Thew Dec-Oct 1878 6d 547

1871 Census George Thew age 38 - 12 Water Street, Birmingham b Birmingham
Elizabeth Thew age 46 - 12 Water Street, Birmingham b Birmingham
Theresa I Thew age 9
George R Thew age 7
Anne E Thew age 5
Florence A Thew age 3
Joseph R Thew age 1

(My)Auntie Winnie - winifred Emma Ansell gave me the following

George James Ansell(George John my ??) married Theresa Thew(THUINO) - italian origin still living in 1927

ISSUE (All Birmingham) George James(1) Gertrude(2) Leonard(3) Hilda(4) Georgina('Ena') Sydney

(1) Winifred's father(Married twice) (2) Married Gunsmith - 2 boys (3) Married Edith 2 girls 1 boy died young
(4) Married - think no children (5) Married Tom - no children (6) Married - one girl Ruby(may be more)
(Emigrated to Australia)

briansell/whiteknight 2008

Howz that for starters - not a lot more mind you How do you find my Auntie Winnie derivation of Thew as THUINO

Hi,
Belinda here. Thanks for the reply. Very interesting. Mum only wondered about the Ansell's link with the ansell company as its the same name. That's why I was curious. I live in Australia. The ansell company produces condoms, stickytape, other stuff I cant bring to mind. Its a big multinational company I think, I dont know much more.

I have in my notes Theresa Isabel(la)Ansell nee Thew married like you said on the freebmd list to George John Ansell in the date you said. She was born and died in Birmingham (listed 1931 in birmingham north on bmd index). She is listed in 1881 census as being married to George John Ansell, and yet in the 1891 and 1901 census as being married to John George Ansell, and it is the same family. Perhaps he was known by both versions of his name?????? Or a census taker got it wrong or whatever. Or maybe for some reason he decided to change his name around for a while. I cant find a George John with a james father in london satisfactorly, so wonder if he was john george. So why then George john for marriage list and 1881 census. Like I said. It is the same guy. Havent any money though to get the actually marriage certificate. Would be interesting.

Yes, it was me to whom you said about the red hair. I have George James (son of Theresa) married to a Emma Jane Garbett in march quarter 1900 in Aston. Think he's this one. Also a another marriage listed June1909 to either Sarah Eliz Hancox or Annie Sullivan, not sure which lady, and not sure if the same George James Ansell.

I know with my family my grandad Ken Hill went round and did some early family tree researching and I noticed going back over it he made a few mistakes, as you do, as I certainly do by the ton. So am unsure about Theresa Thew marrying George James and being of italian stock like your auntie winnie said. But who knows. Could be a different lady though, who knows. Definately puzzles and puzzles. When I get some money together one day I will rejoin ancestry for another look at the census. I have it written in my notes somewhere, just have to figure where!! So many short notes written on bits of paper in my rough notes. Must look into them again. Dont really know that much more about ansells yet.

Belinda.

Hi Rachel, my sincere apologies Only just picked up your messesge going
right back to 15/03/09 - cor that IS bad My excuse is that i rarely view THIS
ancestry site(as they always seem to be asking for money whatever I want?)
But seems probably I should as just today picked up a POSITIVE link from
'Belinda' Haven't got my notes with me regarding the George james's in my
Ansell tree to see if that does link with your George James at the right date
Have come across the pulborough/brighton Ansell's at odd times but not yet
linked them to my Ansells/Thew in the Birmingham/Warwickshire area
Promise to come back shortly briansell

It’s a word document I had shortened for another Amos relative recently. If you like I can send it to your email address??? Let me know. This has given you a good start in the meantime.
If I can find time (pretty hard with a 5month baby, I might look up some of the ansell kids listed to see who they married. Its through coincidence I found your listing, I was looking for Thew’s and Amos’ after this other amos relative had his funeral invitation to his family. And my mum had wondered the other week if your ansell’s were the family that started up the ansell business (which has its logo on loo paper, etc etc etc). You never know. Now I know his father’s name, it might make it easier to look up on the census’ later. Must dash.
Seeya.
Belinda Hill.
Many thanks for letting me see your family tree, I got really excited till I got to William Ansell 1798, only to discover that it was not my William. Your William married Louisa Wells where as my William married a Mary and he was the son of William Ansell and Jane Foster. What a disappointment, never mind, we plod on!!!!!!!!!! All the best to you, Madalene

Hi

I found the marriage of James Ansell and Jane Moore in 1837, registration district Strand.

I can't seem to find them on later censuses. Where was James born? Do you know what children they had?

I did find a James Ansell on the 1851 census which might be him before he was married, but you would need to check place of birth. The James I found was born 1837 in Dunsfold, Surrey, living with his parents, William born 1798 in Dunsfld, Mary his mother born 1801 in Hambledon, Surreyand siblings, William, George, Harriet and Ellen. Could this be him?

Dear Nancy, I noticed that you had an unwanted birth certificate for an Albert Ansell, son of Charles. When I sorted out my late aunts possesions I found a copy of a will from a Charles Ansell, born around 1848/50 and I know he had a brother Albert, and a brother Alfred, but I have not been able to place them in my family tree. My Ansells come down from James Ansell born 1837 who was the son of William and Mary. Does any of this ring any bells! Love to hear from you, all the best, Madalene

Dear Christine, My Ansells come from Kent and Surrey and I would be very interested to see your family tree and see if there is a connection but when I clicked on the website it couldnot be found. My Great grandfather was James Ansell born 1837 who married Jane Moore. As far as I have been able to find out, James's Father was William Ansell who married a Mary, but I do not know Mary's surname. I would love to find out more and am hoping you will be able to help. Hoping to hear from you, all the best, Madalene

Hi Grant, thanks for answering my query about William Ansell. All I know is that he married a Mary in the thanet area. He was born in 1801 and was the son of William Ansell and Jane Foster. The Thanet area is correct as far as I know. Originally I thought the family came from Surrey, but it seems the future families came from Surrey, and Middlesex. Would love to know more so if you learn anything I would be very grateful for more info. Till then all the best, love Madalene

Hi Peter,

Sorry 3 years to reply - I hadn't done any more with the family tree. My husband is now making a determined effort to research it.
Mary had 4 children - 1 boy and 3 girls of which I am one.
John had 4 children and Philip and Anthony had 1 each. None of us children live in Dorking but some of us are close to it.
How far have you got with your research? - probably further than we have.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Madalene,

I am still a bit confused as to when your William was married.

Is there any reason as to why you are looking for William descendants at Thanet as Thanet is not in Surrey but out on the coast in Kent at the Thames River mouth.

Over a long period of time I have locate references to many Ancell/Ansell.

From a wee spreadsheet that I keep here are a few William ANSELL's who
married a Mary.
