There are several US immigration events that involve the Appleby surname. The one that I am most familiar with involve three Appleby brothers, reportedly born in Ulster, who immigrated from Ireland prior to the American Revolution. One was James, the other William, and the third John (my wife's ancestor). What happened to James is unknown. John settled in Pennsylvania near Shade Gap (in Dublin Township, Huntingdon Co.) where his family remained for several generations. William initially settled in Pennsylvania, then moved to Georgia, then moved to Tennessee where he died in 1807. John lived until at least 1814 and is presumed to have died in Pennsylvania.

There are only two James Appleby's in the 1790 US census, one in Mt. Pleasant, Westchester Co., NY, and one in Smithfield, Providence County, RI. The latter appears associated with two other Applebys (John and Thomas) who reside in the same community. The James who lived in Mt. Pleasant resided with one free white female and one slave. If this is the third Appleby brother, he may have had no children. However, a 1955 history by T.A. Appleby (posted in an earlier thread in this forum) suggests that "James seems to have drifted into Maryland, and his posterity is now widely scattered." That early history, however, traced William to Georgia but was unaware that he later moved to Tennessee, so such histories need to be checked for accuracy.

There are several Applebys mentioned in pension records for the American Revolution, so we know that more were around.

Hi Joan
Very interesting background story. From my side my name is Joseph William Appleby. My great grandfather ,Michael Appleby, left Ireland and settled in Middlesbrough,North Yorkshire. My wife Margaret and I left the UK with our two sons in 1963 and settled in Chattanooga,Tn by way of Canada.
We have 3 children, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Our Irish ancestors came from Roscommon. Thomas Appleby and Brigid Feehily being the original family of farmers. Incidentally I originally said I was not aware of William but on going through my recent research I did find a baptism that I had printed of William and had failed to enter it on the family tree.
It was intereting to note that the Appleby girls settled in Connecticutt because apparently another Appleby brother,Patrick, that would be William's brother settled in New Haven in the 1890s. You will see this when you view our tree. I wonder if the nieces of Patrick stayed with them when they first arrived?
My email address is boroboy135@yahoo.com. If you will send me your email address I'll send you an invitation to view the Appleby-Duncan family tree.
Sincerely
Joseph W Appleby

Hi, let me introduce myself. I'm Joan Murphy nee Joan Sheehan. My mother Margaret Appleby married David Sheehan in Connecticut in 1925. Margaret immigrated with her sister Brigid in 1916. Brigid was 19 and Margaret was 17. They settled in Connecticut, and that is where I live now in Woodbridge. I married and am widowed since 1991. I have six sons all married and 15 grandchildren, so there's a lot of us.

I would like further information on the Appleby family. I looked up the 1901 and 1911 census and could find Applebys in both of those. One was my grandfather William Appleby and listed his wife Mary and all their children. Mary was a McLoughlin from Mt. Eagle, Cootehall, Roscommon and William took over the parcel of land from the McLoughlins. Mary's mother was a Feehily and that's where the connection comes in.

I am still trying to research further down the years, but I get to FHL files and they have limited information. There is a Latter Day Saints genealogical center near me in Woodbridge and I have looked up their microfilm, but you really have to order the films that contain the copies of birth certificates, marriage, death etc.

I will let you know if I find anything. It is exciting to connect with someone. I hadn't thought to check the messages until today.

Send me your name and I can give you access to my files.

Joan
Thank you for contacting me. Yes, that is a big help. I was not aware of William and yet it's a name that is in all generations of my Appleby family. Your William would be an older brother of my great grandfather Michael who was born in Roscommon in 1855, There were 4 other brothers, John, Patrick, James and Joseph. There were also three girls Ann, Brigid and Elizabeth. There may have been more children that I'm not aware of. I have a lot more information about where the brothers went to if you're interested.
Where do you live now? Could you share any information you have on the Applebys prior to 1850?
Best regards
Joseph Appleby

Sorry, I'm just reading the message board now. My mother was an Appleby from Mt. Eagle, Roscommon. Her father was William born 8/16/1852 in Gloria, Leitrim (next to Roscommon) and he married Mary McLoughlin in Mt. Eagle, Cootehall, Roscommon.

His father was Thomas Appleby born 1820 and his mother was Brigid Feehily Appleby (no date of birth).

Does this help. I didn't have any other information about William's siblings.

Edited Mar 2012: James and Elizabeth are my great grandparents. Info I have is: James b. 1830 d.1902 married Ann Carey Gunning b. 1831 d 20/11/1896. James is son of James and Elizabeth Appleby. Ann Carey Gunning is daughter of William & Elizabeth Gunning from Somersetshire, England. They had 8 children. James & Elizabeth died at Upper Coldstream, near Grafton, NSW Australia and buried at Ulmarra, Grafton, NSW Australia. (Marriage records show "Ann Carey Gunning" not "Elizabeth Ann" and "Carey" is one of her christian names and not hyphernated.

You should email the owners/posters of those databases with those questions. They should be able to tell you where they obtained the information from and how reliable it is. Note that dates may off either because of differences in oral histories or incorrect connections of people who have similar names.

I am researching an Appleby line in the USA, not this one, so I do not have answers to your specific questions.

I would like to obtain their (James and Ann) marriage records from England so info on where their marriage record is held would be very much appreciated.
Regards, Helen McDermid

I'm looking for information on my great great grandfather, Thomas Appleby. From the limited information I have found, he was born around 1844 and married Rosina Bock. He died in December 1908 in Hobart, Australia.

Re: Family of Joseph and Lucy Appleby, NJ/NY

A copy of the text below was given to Ted Smith in 1988 by Mary Froehlich, a descendant of James McGinnis Appleby.

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE APPLEBY FAMILY--As of August, 1955"

"With emphasis on that Branch descended from John and Priscilla Appleby, and compiled in part from a family history written and presented inperson by Thomas A. Appleby of Mt. Union, Pa., at the first APPLEBY REUNION held September 13, 1928 at the ancestral farm, Pleasant Hill, Dublin township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.

"Although the name APPLEBY is definitely English, our ancestors are said to have come to America from Ireland.

"When the original John Appleby, great grandfather of Thomas A. Appleby, came over the mountains from the east, the country was one vast forest. This John Appleby had two brothers, William and James. For a time, William resided in the vicinity of Newville, Pa., but later moved to Virginia, and still later to Georgia, where his descendents may still befound. James seems to have drifted into Maryland, and his posterity is now widely scattered.

"John, our ancestor, reared a large family of daughters, with two sons,John and Alexander. John married Mary Moreland and their children were as follows: William, John and Alexander, and Thomas who died while young. Descendents of William are still found in the Tuscarora Valley, while those of Alexander are scattered throughout Pennsylvania, Illinois and Colorado.

"John, brother of William and Alexander, married Priscilla Montague, and from them is descended the family which assembles each year for the Appleby Family Reunion. He was the father of five sons who were as follows:

"Daniel Curlet Appleby, who left no posterity, but is remebered with pride for his brilliant record as a soldier and officer in the Civil War.

"Thomas A. Appleby, who resided for a large portion of his life in Mt.Union, Pa., where he owned and operated a general store and edited a newspaper. His children, three of whom still reside in Mt. Union, are as follows, John, Catherine, J. Donald, Martha Stratford, Robert, Janet Tiffany and Nellie Baldwin. Catherine and Robert are deceased.

"The third son was John Scott Appleby. For many years he had charge of the County Home at Shirleysburg, Pa. He was the father of six sons and five daughters, the following of whom are deceased: Lauretta Alice,Tillie Mary, John Orrian, Jesse Warren, Rollo Roy and Thomas Bruce, the latter having died during the past year. The following survive: James Chalmers, of Clear Ridge, Pa.; Harry Cloyd of Rockville, Ill.; Ulie Ellice of Altoona, Pa.; Priscilla Belle Colgate of Pine Grove, Pa., and Anna Jane Kurtz of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

"The fourth son was James McGinnis Appleby, who was commonly known as James Y. Appleby. Witn the exception of two children who died in infancy, his entire family located in Harrisburg, Pa., where the brothers are engaged in Wholesale Supply business. There names are as follows: George Montague, deceased, Charles Edwin, James Rosco, Robert Harold, John Winfred, Kenneth Meredith and a sister, Helen McLaughlin Arnold.

The youngest of the five sons of John and Priscilla Appleby was George Sharrer Appleby, who resided for many years at Ryde, Pa. His children were as follows: Eugene, Faye, Dale and Katherine, all of whom are now deceased. Surviving is Wayne, who resides near McVeytown, Pa., and his sister, Blanche Miller, of the same place.

"Another generation of Applebys has arisen with a second in the process of development, and it is to acquaint these later generation with their ancestors that this brief summary has been prepared. Some of the names of these appear in the kept (sic) by the secretary, Laura Covert, and we commend that each member consult this book and if his name is not yet recorded, make the proper entry so that the record may be prepared and kept up to date."

From History of Huntingdon Co. (http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofhunting00lytle/histor...):
"William Morrow and John Appleby settled along the
Kittanning or Indian path, in the ridges about two miles
east of Shade Gap, and James Wilson and William Moreland in the same neighborhood. The land there was considered the most desirable because it was smooth and easy to clear in comparison with that along the mountains, but now the preponderance of value is largely in favor of the
latter. About the centre of this settlement was built perhaps the first school house in the township. Another was
built on Jerry's ridge shortly afterwards, if not at the same time. Among the earliest teachers were James McGee,
William Woods and George Moreland."

Ted adds: After England conquered Ireland in 1536, it moved Irish off farms in what is now Northern Ireland and moved about 80,000 Scottish and English Protestants into that region. It is likely that the ancestors of this Appleby family may have been some of those who were relocated either ten or following later wars. Most of those who relocated from Ireland to North America prior to the American Revolution were Protestants. Historians estimate that about 1/3 of Washington's army was comprised of disaffected immigrants from Ireland.

Greetings...
It's interesting knowing that your Dad got to read that book, anyway. Sorry he's gone.

I just got a nice response from Sue Mastel about DNA research and other thing Appleby.
Last night, I put more of the current material into Family Tree Maker, and compared it with the big "tree" I printed out several years ago. There are corrections now, so that's progress!
I'll try to get more in soon. We're taking a trip for a few days, and I fear I'll lose momentum:)
Nancy

Sorry:-
Princess Pocahontas was a native American who in the year 1607 intervened to save the life of pioneer Captain John Smith. Later she left her home in Virginia to travel to England, where she married an Englishman and became a regular in the court of King James. She became the first of her nation to convert to Christianity.
Pocahontas died on a ship anchored off Gravesend before she was able to return to the country of her birth. It is popular belief her remains are interred somewhere in the vicinity of the church, having been removed for reburial after the previous church was destroyed by fire.

Ref; http://stgeorgesgravesend.org.uk/history/pocahontas1.php

The first time i flew to Minnesota I thought how easy it is to immigrate today, I often wonder what is was like way back in the days of sailing ships, must have been a nightmare, people trying to start new lives, maybe on the run from oppressive European regimes, the Heugenots, Quakers, the Pilgrim Fathers, and then trying to survive in an alien world, where many of them sadly died, from starvation etc. Imagine, what it was like meeting the first Native Americans. When my Father went into hospital, before he died, i bought him "last of the mohicans", so that was the last book he ever read, thats why its one of my favourite books, and film. Apparently Pocahontas is buried in Greenwich in London, how strange it must have been for her.

Take Care

Rob Ellison

I cannot fathom what you went through.
I know Minnesota well, as I live next door to it. Weather is a major deal here.

Then the 9/11 catastrophe turned everything upside down here.
Sorry you lost the land, the dream and the money.

I looked at your Tree... and we're probably not closely related.
I did find today the diary my Great grandfather kept when he immigrated. I sent it to those I have the email for, but you can probably find it on rootsweb under world connections Appleby-Montague-Shields-Pullig

His trip didn't sound so pleasant either. I will NOT take a ship across the Atlantic in February.

Yeah, after my X left me, i met this girl on the internet, and flew over to the twin cities, she lived up in Pierz, had to get connecting flight to St Cloud, but there were ice storms up north, grand rapids way. Anyway I touched down in Minneapolis, i remember not having any jumpers in my suitcase, it was -30, i used to smoke in those days, the cold hit me when i left the airport for a drag. Went to the mega-mal on my own, couldnt believe the size of the place, but got back to the airport. Because the connecting flight was cancelled i slept rough in the airport, got friendly the next day with two people, who were pissed off coz of the delay, girl and a guy, we went 3 ways with cab fare, drove up highway 10. Second time i went it was over a 100 in the shade, i'd sold the house by then in England and had a lot of cash to spend, i was going to marry this girl and buy some land up there, went to various realtors, however you spell it, put down payment down on 20 acres up there, visa had run out though. I got cold feet when i got back to england, this was two months before 9-11 happened... God Forbid, knocked the idea on the head, lost lot of money. Yeah, click on the GILLIAN10 above, and then click my profile, and scroll down and click on ellison family tree.... i think.

Rob

Your timing in 2001 didn't sound too good.

I went to Mn from Washington state. Hope you were ready for the weather. Sorry about the Green Card.

Didn't realize it was Eastern Europeans as much as the various folks from the Middle east.

This is a really novice question, but how to I access your Tree?

Sounds like you've settled down and have a nice family. I figured given our political and economic messes here, that England might be the place to live. Several of my former students are there now.

You probably feel a little older now, but I'm 20 years older than that:) as in Monty Python's Holy Grail... I'm not dead yet :)
You'll probably land in California with the whole family one of these days.

John Cliff probably predates any Appleby I have here... but they are likely to have been related back a few generations in the old country..

Yeah, well, Jillings doesn't mean much i'm afraid, Britain is a small island with too many people on it, at the last count it was 60 million, we got loads of eastern europeans migrants over here now taking all the jobs, cheap labour. I know all about the States, I was over there in 2001 for 3 months in Mn, tried to get a green card and all that, but i reckoned i was too old to immigrate, being 36 at the time, i'd been through a divorce and got the wanderlust or whatever the Germans call it, like my Great grandfather, who went on the Yukon; he settled in San Francisco, died in 68. he had a brother who was a doctor, and they had kids, so I got blood there, as well as in Canada on my Mums side, around Toronto. I'm 46 and got kids and theres no point, but i'd love my boys to immigrate to America or Australia. I've also just discovered a John Cliff, who was an entrepreneur during the industrial revolution, had a daughter sarah cliff who married a John Appleby, did you look at my Tree?

Rob

Hi Rob...

I think we've ( my immediate family) a link between the Dallas TX group and the London folks. Census on both sides of the pond.

As you say, figuring how that group of mine relates to other Appleby's is a challenge.

Islington seems to link to my group and yours. I suppose going back further in English censue might show that my Thomas and your Clara were related.

That it appears there were 2 Thomas Henry Appleby's born the same year, is a interesting twist. My current name is so common, there are 8 of us in the small town hospital computer. I AM VERY CAREFUL to not have the wrong leg amputated.
So I'm trying to be careful about the 2 or so Thomas characters.

I have been to London a few times. It gets more and more diverse. I remember being in Hyde Park thinking my husband and I were the only people speaking any version of English!!

I think I remember my mother indicating that OUR Thomas moved here because of economic conditions... he was not the eldest male in the family, and he had a growing family.

He married a Jillings. Does that mean anything to you?

Yeah, fine i'll be glad to know if you discover there's a connection between the Appleby's over here and your side of the pond. I may have said it before but i knew nothing about my Fathers side til I discovered a Clara Appleby marrying my Great Grandfather who I had no idea about either. Not sure what the connection is between the North of England and Islington, London is though, they are as far removed as LA is from NYC, if you know what I mean, but could never work out why My Dad's Mum/ Mom moved down to London in the first place apart from remarrying I guess, and Harold my Granddad passing away in Islington, ...Clara Appleby being his Mother. If you have ever visited Britain, the old northern mill towns have changed quite a bit, not many English left in some of them... same goes for London. If was definitely a different world then....

Regards

Rob Ellison

Rob at Gilliano
I figure we are dealing with the same family.

I've been sorting postings, and am slowly learning the rootsweb and ancestry.com

I finally figured out there was a ROB and a BOB that I was answering.
I've created a small group on my maid email for the Appleby folks I'm working on, and would put your home email on that list. I'm nfhill@centurytel.net

I've got some cousins who are now interested in this, and I need to get as much done as quickly as possible before all of us head off on other projects :)

We seem to have census from England and US and a ships passenger list and a few obits.
I'd love to connect the Appleby's we think we have to earlier generations in England.

Yeah, as a London lad myself, I can say that Barnet and Islington, are both in Middlesex, Middlesex is West London, north of the river mind. I presume your Grandmother was born over here, or am I wrong?

Rob

In the recent hours of some help from another source, I've figured the siblings of my grandmother were born in 1870,1872, 1874 in St. Mary islington, Middlesex, Eng

and the next batch ( indicating a move) 1876, 1878, 1881 in East Barnet

living at 2 laurel Cott
East Barnet, Herfordshire, Middlesex, England.

Now, Middlesex is in both addresses.

Then.... (this is the 1881 census) they show up in Dallas.

My grandmother Catherine Marguerite Appleby isn't yet born

Yeah maybe, my Dad's side was always a bit of a mystery to me, a dead end, excuse the pun, however i've discovered loads since coming on here, I've got a few American connections in our family; namely the Ellisons and Hardman side of my family. The Applebys seem to come more from the North of England around Manchester and Leeds, doesn't sound a long way on the map, I guess compared to say Texas, but over here there's a big difference, as you may know; i've been to Minnesota and you could fit Britain in it, its a small island but theres one hell of a difference between London in the south and old industrial north. I've gone back a bit already on the Applebys already today, i think its more likely they migrated from the north to the south, i.e. Islington, London, but then i might be wrong....

Regards

Rob

Hi, its funny should mention Appleby, I recently discovered that my Great Grandfather's Wife Was called Clara Appleby, She was born in Manchester 1858, her Father was a one Joseph Appleby, who I have no information. The funny thing is my Great Grandfather William Thomas Ellison and Clara had two boys and two girls, one of the boys, Harold Gill Ellison, who was born incidentally in Skipton, Yorkshire, seems to have died in Islington, London in 1955. What i'm wondering is apart from his X wife living in Shepherds Bush, is there a reason he left Yorkshire to live in Islington. Is there a connection, hence Joseph Appleby.
I don't know, ....

Rob Ellison

Being one of those that has taken part in the Appleby DNA project, I would highly recommend it to all those with a direct line of descent, in time it will give us the real picture of our heritage. As well as submitting my DNA to the project, our family donated the funds to have a descendant of an Tasmanian family tested as well. I would call on others to step forward and take part in this project.

Regards Peter Applebee
Adelaide, South Australia
http://www.ozgenonline.com/~applebee/
Australian Representative of the Appleby Research Organization
