My mistake: Anor Archibald was not the daughter of Polly's second husband, William Pinkerton, but the daughter of her first husband, Daniel Betts (m. 1819) of Saratoga County, NY. They had three children: Sarah Couch Betts (b. 1820), Anor Betts (b. 1823), and Alfred Betts (b. 1825). Polly then married Willam Pinkerton Jr. (m. 1825-1830) and had a son, William Pinkerton III (b. 1831). Polly then married John Morris (m. 1836).

Fantastic, Eleanor!

I'm assuming that they aren't related to the Muirs in my lineage. Do they have any history for the cottage? If so, I'd be interested in a copy of any relevant docs.

I can't remember what I mentioned in previous posts, but I did take a few photgraphs of the cottage exterior a couple of years ago (just from the front because there was no answer at the door) and those seem to have disappeared between cameras and PC hard drive upgrades/failures.

There are a couple of lines from George and Lilias that I haven't chased forwards yet, but they will have to wait until I get some time in Edinburgh in the future.

Good to hear from you :-))

Jim T

My ancestry dates back to John Morris and Matilda Decker. After her death in 1836, he married Mary "Polly" (Chamberlain) Pinkerton, widow with two children: William Pinkerton III and Anor Pinkerton, later wife of Andrew Archibald of Portville, NY. Polly's husband, William Pinkerton Jr., died in 1831 and is buried in Pine Street Cemetery, Portville.

John Morris and Polly had one child, Emma C. (Morris) Jones, born May 13, 1837 in Ceres. When John Morris died in 1852 and his son inherited the farm, Polly, Emma and William III moved into Andrew and Anor's house in Mill Grove (refer to 1855, 1860 Portville, NY censuses).

There were four Archibald men in Portville that appear to be brothers, Alanson (1811-1887), Andrew (b. 1814), John R. (1822-1893), and Lyman Archibald (or Archibold) (see Chestnut Hill Cemetery or FindAGrave.com).

Andrew Sr. died between 1880 and 1900 when Anor "Betsey" was listed as a widow. and Anor died after 1900. Neither is in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. They had 10 children: Mary Scofield, John, Jennette Scofield, Andrew Jr., George, Sarah, Anor "Dollie", Flora, Charles, and Alfred. Andrew Jr. died in 1919, not Andrew Sr. Anor "Dollie" died in 1919, not Anor (Pinkerton) Archibald. Andrew Jr., George, Anor "Dollie", Flora, and Alfred are buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Children of John R. Archibald; Emma G., and James are buried in Chestnut Hill. Frances H., wife of William B. Hill is buried in Mount View Cemetery in Olean. Children of James; Lee, Merritt, and Glenn and their wives are buried in Chestnut Hill. A brother, Donald, was in WW I France in 1918.

Re: Early Archibalds

Hi Alison, I was really interested to see your reference to Ghileasbuig in your ancestral line which later changed to Archibald. I had heard of this but in thirty year's research into the Archibald name, have never actually come across and example.
Ghileasbuig, as you may know, is the Gaelic version of Gillespie. It was aparently translated to Archibald, if memory serves me correctly, because of a mistaken belief that the 'ghile' part, which means 'servant' or 'shaven one', had a connection with 'bald'. I have always been suspicious of the suggestion but it does appear to be correct. In which case you should be entitled to wear the McPherson tartan, Gillespies being a sept of that clan. Nowadays, Archibald is often included in the families which can use the tartan, probably more for pecuniary reasons than historical ones.
I doubt your family originated in Northern Ireland. The name Ghileasbuig certainly points to the Highlands of Scotland. I would think the family moved to Northern Ireland in the early 1600s when King James VI of Scotland took over the English throne and tried to solved the "Irish question" by creating Plantations sold off to wealthy entrepreneurs (mainly the noble classes) many of whom were Scots who set up home in the province and took the people who worked on the Scottish estates with them. The idea was to establish and presbyterian community to replace a roman catholic one, essentially the origin of the problems the poor province continues to face today. Thanks for the interesting snippet of information. Best wishes. Doug Archibald in Scotland.
Janet Laing was the second wife of William Archibald (Jr.). William's parents were William Archibald (Sr) and Mary Duncan. William Archibald (Jr.) died 10 Feb 1881 at Bristo Street (St Giles parish) in Edinburgh, Scotland. Children of William Archibald and Janet Laing include: Robert Archibald (b. 29 May 1856); Edward Archibald (b. 14 Dec 1859); David Archibald (b. 14 Dec 1859); Willamina Archibald (b. 18 Dec 1862 and d. 12 April 1863 at age 4 mos.); George Duncan Archibald (b. 18 Nov 1864); John Archibald (b. abt 1844) who married Catharine Curtis 29 Dec 1865; Frederick Archibald (b 9 Apr 1848); Barbara Archibald (b. 25 May 1849); Janet Archibald (b. 8 Sep 1851); Elizabeth Archibald (b. abt 1852); Margaret Archibald (b. 20 Jan 1854); and Catharine Archibald (b. abt 1845) who married John Livinston 7 July 1868. [children not listed in order of birth] I don't know anything more about their ancestors or descendants.

Hi,
Mary Archibald was the daughter of Andrew Archibald & Agnes Lindsay the latter being a daughter of John Lindsay & Agnes Scot of Kettle and Largo, Fife. I am a direct descendant of their daughter Helen who married (1) David Webster & (2) Robert Williamson. The Lindsay, Webster, Williamson and Archibald families were contracted by the Australian Agricultural Company in New Gilston, Largo, Fife to work in the coal mines of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

NBAC (Noel Butlin Archives Centre)
78/1/16 p704
Particulars of Scotch Colliers residing in the Parish of Largo Fife, named by James Birrell (who arrived from thence per Richard Webb) as likely to engage with the Company for their Colliery at Newcastle N.S.W. being industrious workmen and of good Character -
13 Andrew Archibald - Married 4 Children
1st March 1841

When it was time to immigrate Andrew changed his mind and stayed in Scotland.

I have a large tree I can send you on the family.

Regards,
Ryan Dudley

I am interested in tracing ancestors of Matthew (poss Mathew) Miller 1816 – 1844 who was married 29 Sep 1835 in Edinburgh to Barbara Archibald 1809 – 1899. He was a Cloth Merchant and died young (~age 29). His Father in Law was William Archibald 1769 – 1847 an engraver married 13 Aug 1796 to Mary (Stewart) Duncan 1778 – 1857. I am completely stuck with respect to Matthew Miller’s parents. I am hoping the Archibald connection might give a clue. Reference the Archibalds (see below).

Hi Lisa!! My great great great grandmother is Jannet Brown Kirkman. I am the descendant of their son Thomas who married Jane Hunt. All I know right so far is her birth date is 8/1866 Scotland UK and her death is 1937. She and William are buried in Messiah Baptist Church Cooper Township in Clearfield PA. Let me know if you find anything on your search and I will keep you posted on my results.

According to research on her by a distant cousin, her last name may have been "Hamilton" at one time.

I have her name as Susan Archibald on her son's birth certificate (which SHOULD be the maiden name, but I'm open to suggestions, LOL).

~Dave

Unfortunally that post was in 2003 and I no longer use it. Sorry. My sujestion would be to try and find info on siblings of your grandmother and greatgrandmother. (or others in the family) that may lead you to the answers you are looking for. Those names are not listed anywhere in my tree.
AR Archibalds

I can't get your web site to open but hope you might have something that will help me move forward. My maternal grandmother was Hattie May Archibald, born in Lonoke County AR. In reviewing the census data I found her mother's name as Racheel but everything changed in between 1890 and 1900. The lose of the 1890 has baffled me. In the 1900 census it shows Racheel is now married to William Ashmore and my grandmother is listed as step-daughter.

Unfortunately, I can't find Racheel's marriage to Archibald in order to move backward. If you can help I will be forever grateful.

Pamela
