Hi, I would love to say yes I can help but sadly my Aris line only goes back to 1802[3 to William Aris born in Westminster. I have been unable to locate where exactly in Westminster he was born, and his wedding certificate does not state any family members parents or siblings names on the wedding certificate. So I am stuck. If I find any thing on Joseph Aris I will leave a message on this site. Good luck.
Irene

I have read a 2002 email on RootsWeb in respect of this subject.

I am researching my ancestor Joseph Aris, who was born 1764 in Aynho, Northamptonshire and lived there with his first wife, Sarah(nee Collison from Worcestershire), son Joseph Aris (baptised: 30 May 1798), daughter who died young and son Thomas Aris. His wife died during/after birth of Thomas and moved to Finedon near Burton Latimer where he remarried to Frances Burnaby on the 23 June 1805 at St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Burton Latimer and had further family.
I am particularly interested in the births for Joseph (father and son) and Thomas Aris and marriage to and death of Sarah about 1800.
I would appreciate any information.
Dear Lesley,

1.	Augustus was a brother of my Grandfather. My mother said he lived at one time in Nimmo Street, Melbourne. I didn’t know when he died. The family used to send us food parcels during the Second World War and I do know there was a Bill (William?) Ariss living in Melbourne around 1980 as he used to use the same hotel in Hong Kong (The Hong Kong, Kowloon) as I did and the staff used to get us mixed up.
2.	According to my records, Samuel was married to Jane Padbury on 21 Jul 1828 (d. March 1839) and Benjamin’s birth is given as c. 1825! Samuel subsequently married Caroline Merry on 17 May 1842.
3.	There were two Benjamins in Croughton but I presume Samuel’s son had moved off to lodge elsewhere for work at the time of the census, he would have been about 16 years old.
4.	The other Benjamin, of Thomas and Anne (neé Fareon), was born in 1824.
5.	Of the five households, Richard (b. 1810) and Thomas (b. 1796) were brothers of Samuel, John & Mary were their parents. The two Bejamins were therefore cousins. The other, lone, Samuel was a different family. I believe that they changed their name to Ayriss to avoid confusion.
6.	By the 1881 census Benjamin, then 56, had moved to Bodicote near Banbury, Oxfordshire, living at Farm House and he was Farm Bailiff.
7.	Dave Ayriss had posted the Ariss family tree based on Oxfordshire and
Northamptonshire roots on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ayriss/
and it may still be there.

I hope this will stop you tearing out the rest of your hair, let me know if you need any further information
Re: ARIS/BARNES

Hi Brian,
have been looking at this Ariss line ( a very small twig on my family tree). Connections through Augustus Ariss bn 1865 Croughton emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria Australia died there in 1937. He was the son of Benjamin Ariss and Hannah Merry. Benjamin states his father on his marriage certificate as Samuel Ariss so appears to be the Samuel m Jane. This has been a surprising link for me as, all census records APPEAR to show only one Benjamin Ariss bn c 1825, but this one is the son of Thomas And Ann Ariss. I have been unable to find a Benjamin Ariss in the 1841 or 1851 census OTHER than the Thomas and Ann one, and equally, no sign of the Thomas and Ann one after 1851 census. There appears to be no death of a second Benjamin. Since you appear to have looked at the parish records of Croughton, I was wondering if you could shead any light on Samuel. It would appear that if Benjamin was his son, then he was born some three years prior to the marriage. (of Samuel to Jane). It just seems that the census's show only one Benjamin Ariss (son of Thomas 1841 & 1851) then from 1861 onwards one Benjamin Ariss matching in every respect the earlier one, and this one was married to Hannah Merry. However the marriage cert says this ben was the son of Samuel. I'm nearly tearing my hair out in frustration!! I note the 1841 census for Croughton appears to have 4 seperate households of Ariss - John and Mary (the older household) then Thomas and Ann, Samuel ( a widower at this point???) and Richard and Louise the youngest household. Are these all connected??. Is your Samuel connected with my Samuel??
Regards

Lesley
Melbourne, Australia

Yes Arras in France is probably the origins. and Yes Spain.
But it also heavy in Scotland, sorry cannot find my paperwork to explain. I believe Aris was first found in Staffordshire where there were Lords of the manor of Arras from early times.

Hi Thanks for replying. But not family that I am looking for.

Did you know where Aris originated? According to my research, Arras in France or Galacia in Spain. Difficult to know which as both were at odds with England at different times.

Best of luck with your research,

Yes Census 1851 is the correct family and I have traced all my family from the present day all the way back to William Aris 1802-03. Unfortunately all the census just state Westminster. The earliest census 1841, HO 107/1085/6 based at St. George The Martyr is the earliest record I can find of William Aris. (Sons Edward Aris 1825, John ARis 1837 and William Aris 1833). I have not been able to trace any Baptism information. Westminster Archives could not find anything, only suggested I pay a researcher to do so. But before I do, I am trying to see if anyone has already researched and found a connection to my William Aris.
I am happy to share my family tree, all my information is is on Genesreunited.
Does anyone have any connections to William Aris 1802/03 Westminster? He married Catherine Patience Usher in 1822 Clapham.
My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather, Samuel Ariss did, I believe, live in Bodicote but actually married in Banbury in about 1780 as the Bodicote church was not in use for some reason. Apparently, he married someone called Mary but as another Samuel Ariss married a Mary in the same year and in the same church I have not been able to progress this line.

The family lived most of their time in Croughton, Northamptonshire and the church Parish Records have a lot of detail of my family (now called Ariss) and another Aris (now called Ayriss) family in the same village but unrelated.

The only William I have in my records married to an Elizabeth was born in Croughton on 9th June 1839 and I believe they had 10 children. There was another William born 3rd December 1826 in Croughton but I have no record of him marrying.

Dave Ayriss has posted a family tree at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ayriss/

Hope this is of some interest

Brian Ariss
All of my Aris line goes back to William and we have all originated from London, Lambeth, Battersea, Westminster area. If I could help I would only be to happy too. I would like to try and find were my line originates from, there could well be a connection to your own, but I do not have any leads what so ever.

The Aris/Barnes connection ....

First, wrong to assume all info is centred on Bodicote, North Oxon

Many events that connect this family are to be found in South Oxon/Northants/Warks & possibly London

The one thing that stands out with researching Aris/Barnes connections is they married into each others family over several generations - expanding their land holdings with each marriage. (I have the wills etc)

Better to describe them as all having connections to Banbury Town area - much of their working land was rented/leased from the nobility & landowners of Banbury area.
In turn the Aris/Barnes (company?) made their share also.

Regards Va
