Dolly Arlington, Otsego County, NY (CT roots?)

Anyone familiar with a Dolly ARLINGTON, b. in CT but living in Otsego County, NY in 1880?

The 1880 census shows my gr gr grandmother, Kaziah BARRUS HODGE, widowed, boarding with a Dolly ARLINGTON (age 77), in the Town of Otsego, Otsego County, NY. The census states that the parents of both Keziah and Dolly were born in CT.

Keziah BARRUS HODGE was born in 13 Feb 1813. Dolly was born ~1803. Since I am not having much luck tracking down the BARRUS family, I am hoping that info on Dolly may lead me to at least an area of CT that they were both from. It's a longshot!

I am looking for information about my grandfather's parents, Edward F. Arlington, who was born in Ohio probably in the 1860's, and Frances Duikle (sp?)(also born in Ohio). They were probably married in the early 1880's. They had a son, Frank Louis Arlington, in 1885 in Ohio, who was my grandfather. Frank married Minnie Mitchell about 1907 in Texas.

Frank Arlington married Minnie Mitchell in Texas about 1905. I was told Frank was born in Indiana about 1885, then was adopted by the Arlingtons. I don't know if the adoption happened in Indiana or Texas (or someplace in between). Frank's original name may have been Wilson. Sound familiar to anyone?

Sorry if I confused the though process. The only thing that I have on Charles is his name, on Marcus I have that he was married to Melisa Williams, on 6 Dec 1845 and that they are possible son of Richard and Sarah Atherton

Judy,
Not to inundate you with messages but just looked at the NYS census of 1855 for Richard A. Strickland. HIs father Richard was 74 and still alive. His father , in that census, said he was born in Kings County, NY or Brooklyn. Our Stricklands might have come from Connecticutt or Brooklyn. I guess the Plattekill Stricklands (Abraham, Jacob and Ebenezer) migrated from Brooklyn to Plattekill between 1781-1790.
Richard A. Strickland had another child called Mary in 1853 which I don't know if you know about. I think you told me Maria and Richard had a child Charles but can find no census record on him. Possibly he died young. More might be found from the records of the New Paltz Methodist Church.

Judy
I started to check on the Stricklands in the Census. What I did about two years ago is audit Ulster County for Dunn, Terwilliger, Strickland and Winne name by name. Even with that names can be missed since the spelling is atrocious in the census.
You say that Marcus and Jeremiah are mentioned as siblings of Jeremiah. The only Marcus I found was the son of Margaret and Jonathan Strickland of New Paltz in 1850 and he was born in 1844. The only Jeremiah Strickland, so far is the son of Catherine Quick and Richard Strickland. This latter Richard was born about 1818 and is not the father of Calvin. Calvin , and the census backs me up, was the son of Richard A. Strickland born maybe 1806 or 1807 if he gave the right age in 1860 and 1870. His father was Richard Strickland since he was living with his son in New Paltz in 1850. Aaron Strickland was living in Rochester in 1850 and he could be a son of Sarah Atherton and Richard Strickland. So far , I have as siblings of Richard A. Strickland:
1) Aaron- born about 1808
2) Caroline- born Aug. 4, 1809; died March 13, 1888
3) Benjamin- born 1811 (I can;t find him but will take your word
4) Eunice (Unis)- Feb. 1, 1815; died May 17, 1888
I don't see any evidence for a Marcus or Jeremiah but possibly the tather of Marcus , Jonathan was a sibling of Richards since he lived right by him in New Paltz. I can't prove it., however.
I found out another little Item that may help. Richard A. was a trustee in the New Paltz Methodist church that would mean that marriages, births, deaths etc would not be in the New Paltz RDC but in the New Paltz methodist Church . Your ancestor Calvin enlisted in the 156 regiment , Co. A on Aug. 9, 1862. Calvin, if he wasn't wounded, must have been in the war for the duration. I found Calvin in Pennsylvania in 1880 but lost his family in 1900. We must trade descendencies

Dear Judy,
On going over your records we may be talking about two Richard Stricklands . You say your Richard Strickland was born in 1814 and was Richard L. Strickland.. Mine was Richard Atherton Strickland and he was born in 1805 I have run across this Richard Strickland in the township of Wawarsing census and it is confusing. Another Richard Strickland married a Catherine Quick in the township of Rochester. That might have been the father of Richard A. Strickland after his 1st wife Sarah Atherton died. The name Marquis in the family of Benjamin Freer Dunn was used in two generations. I know Caroline had a sister Eunice since she is buried by her under her married name and lived with her in 1880.. I recall a Richard Strickland farm Hand in the township of Rochester. Richard A. Strickland is in a "A History of Ulster County". Is it possible that your ancestors confused the two Richard Stricklands as well?

Judy,
You may be right about Maria (Mary) Freer if you have a hard bible record. The reason I said Maria (Mary) Freer , daughter of Paulus Freer, is because Benjamin Freer Dunn, the son of Lucy Freer and Robert Dunn was a niece of Lucy Freer (brother Paulus). I have a great deal of Freer blood in me and ultimately I have come to expect marriage of 1st cousins which probably I was wrong in this case. That is , if you have hard bible evidence. I have Terwilliger blood in me and for three consecutive generations of Terwilliger they married there 1st cousin Freers and had many children. Lucy was the daughter of Sarah Van Wagenen and Jeremiah Freer and a direct descendent of Hugo Freer sr. From Hugo Freer Senior, who was married to Anna Maria LeRoy , four of his children are my direct descendent (Sarah , Isaac, Elizabeth and Hugo jr.) Lucy was descendent from both Elizabeth and Hugo jr. I don't know which Jacob Freer you are talking about ( Have six in my file) and wish I had the 2 volume set on the Freer's which hopefully gives accurate information. Kenneth Hasbrouck gave some bad info on the Dunns, Freers and Terwilligers. My Freer info came from Teresa Wilson and I did cover Maria (Mary ) Freer with her.. Teresa has an excellent file on the 'Freers but nonetheless mistakes are made.

Here is some of the info I have in regart to the Stricklands from me back:
My mother: Helen Josephine Noxon m. Floyd S Bakley
Sarah Mariah Strickland m. Frank Noxon
gg-father: Calvin Strickland m. Rosannah Jane Alcorn
ggg-father: Richard A Strickland m. Maria Freer (Le Febre a French Hugenot) daughter of Jacob Daniel Freer and Mary Elizabeth Du Vall. This is were our information conflicts at the parentage of Maria. This is out of a Bible held by Mary Cubbon, daughter of Maxwell C Strickland, son of Calvin Strickland, my great grandfather.

A letter to Calvin Strickland from his aunt, Mrs. Benjamin Strickland and indicates that Richard was Calvins father and (Richard ) had at least 3 brothers Marcus, Aaron and Benjamine. In Mary Jane Cubbons letter to me she states that in her mother's bible it mentioned another brother Charles.

She also included a hand written pedigree as follows:

Sarah Mariah Strickland NOXON(my grandmother)
Rosanna Jane ALCORN, 1856-1828 & Calvin C STRICKLAND, 1840-1898
Sarah Ann MAHLE & Johnathan Maxwell ALCORN
Maria FREER (Le Febre-French Hugenot) & Richard STRICKLAND, (English)
Kathryn SEIGWORTH (10 children) & William MAHLE (came from Germany when 5 or 6)
Mary BENN & Robert ALCORN
Rosina Henlen (German - came over when young) & John David SEIGWORTH (born in Metzinger Provicence of Wertamburg, germany in 1786 and died near Fryburg, PA in 1858, came to US in 1803)

She states that Richard was born in 1818 and his son in Calvin 1840

She also states that the possible brothers and sisters of Richard L Strickland (this middle initial possibly H) were Jeremiah STRICKLAND m. Maria SNYDER12/08/1819
Jacob STRICKLAND m. Jane PURDY10/28/1820
Caroline STRICKLAND m. Benjamin F DUNN
An Ebenezer Strickland was present in the census of 1790, in Orange County on the Newburgh Turnpike. The same census had two females, 4males 0-15, and one male over 16. There was also an Abraham Strickland (1 male over 16, 1 female, and one male 0-15) and Jacob Strickland (1 male over 16, 3 females and one slave). In 1800 Jacob , Ebenezer and Abraham are listed in Plattekill, south of New Paltz., with large families. The family remained South of New Paltz in Plattekill for some time and is definately my Strickland family The Atherton' s lived in New Paltz but don't have enough information to relate Sarah to any of the Athertons I found. The only info I have on Sarah Atherton is contained in the Bible of Caroline Strickland (daughter of Sarah and Richard) and Benjamin Freer Dunn who started a farm in the township of Rochester Ulster County. These are my gggrandparents. Caroline had brother Richard who married Maria Freer, sister Eunice who married E. W. Du Pray. Eunice and Caroline are buried on the former farm of Carolines Son Robert Dunn in Pataukunk.

Judith
A strong possibility exists that you are referring to Richard H. Strickland who married Sarah Atherton. Richard was born March 8, 1781 and died April 17,1857. Sarah Atherton was born March 9, 1783 and died Jan. 8, 1827. Your reference to Kings County (Brooklyn) interests me. I believe and have good circumstantial evidence his father was Ebenezer Strickland. Ebenezer and his two brothers moved to Ulster County, NY along the Hudson from some place and Kings County is as good as any.
