He talked to anyone and everyone and always left a lasting impression. He absolutely loved a good time and could not start the day without a little humor from his daily jokes. He was happiest when surrounded by loved ones and would hum and whistle endlessly. Every single thing about Armie will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

A memorial gathering was held on May 14, in Middletown, N.J.

The family requests that donations in Armie’s memory be made to the American Cancer Society, Eastern Division, 2310 Route 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736

Visit www.vaschak-kirilafh.com to view this obituary or to send condolences to the family.

And as Armie would always say, “DONE DEAL
Danny, I'm sorry I've just seen your reply three years later! I don't always get a notice when someone replies.

I find it interesting that you come from Armstrongs and Samples--my grandfather was married to an Armstrong, and his great-grandmother was a Sample! You may be double kin to me!

There are still several Armstrong families in Tyrrell County. You're definitely not alone! :)

Hi gba,

William (1835 - 1875) married to Jane Holmes (1838) is my GGGfather. I'd be interested to know anything else about Jane (1781 - 1810). My findings are all a bit sketchy and I'm having difficulty establishing lineage from here in NZ, but, like you I think she's the daughter of Adam (1749 - 1814) m. Jane Haugh (1742 -1792).
I have seen seen references to Adam (1715-1779) m. Margaret Nixon (1716-1741) who died in Chambersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania, United States.
HTH,
Mark

You said:
Either Gretna or Graitney Parish.
These two names are the same parish under different spellings.

Another thing I would point out is that "Scottish naming conventions" were just that - conventions, NOT rules. Many families ignored such conventions, or just used them as far as the first son and first daughter, so you cannot make a decision based on that alone.
You should also realise that the online indexes are NOT complete nor comprehensive, especially if the family were Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Congregational, Baptists, Free Church, etc.
Gordon.

Janet Armstrong born Scitland ca 1814

Trying to crack this bickwall.

What is 'known':

Janet Armstrong, listed as 16, immigrated from Greenock Scotland to New York arriving on August 29, 1832 on the Ship Camillus. On board was her future husband John Sommerville. They were married in Troy New York in June 1834.

No other Armstrong family members are listed on the passenger list.

A search at ScotlandsPeople site finds 3 possible choices.

1) Janet Armstrong, born 4/9/1814 to Alexander Armstrong and Janet Irving in in Dumfries. Either Gretna or Graitney Parish.

2) Janet Armstrong, born 5/22/1814 to William Armstrong and Sarah McCrae in Troqueer Kirkcudbright

3) Janet Armstrong, born 6/19/1814 to Robert Armstrong and Rosy Kelly in Penicuik Midlothian

While all three are possible I think the second is the only one that makes sense. Following the Scottish naming convention then in use, the first daughter would be named after the mothers mother. The second son would be named after his mothers father.

Their children wee:

Margaret
Mary
Agnes
John
William
Janet
Emmaline
Albert
James.

The names Margaret, Emmaline and Albert don't seem to fit the connvention but all the others do.

Mary was the name of John's mother
Agnes was John's older sister
Janet was at least the mothers name.
John was the fathers name and the paternal grandfathers name
William was an older brother of John's
James was an older brother of John's

So while the naming convention was not followed 100% there is enough similarity to say they followed it basically.

Janet's death in 1860 seem's to be as much a mystery as her birth. The 1860 census for Oconomowoc, Waukesha, Wisconsin lists Janet as being with her husband and children. John her husband gets married to Sophia Zable in October 1860 in Summit Wisconsin. On the Fathers Pension form that John filled out for their son William's Civil War death he lists that Janet died in May 1860 in Oconomowoc. Only problem is that the census which has her alive was dated the end of June 1860. Also no other record of her death has ever been found.

Any information of help will be greatfuly appreciated.

Bob

No we are not sure, we can only go by family story passed down through the generations. I think the only record that even mentions George is from his son's William's death record. Which states father was George and mother Theresa Rice. At least that is the only record I know of. William was born in Ohio, and from what I understand records were burned during that time period. William did claim his father was born in England on the 1900 census, and then claims Ireland on the 1880 census. I am pretty sure that he was not born in America. My grandfather also claimed he was from Ireland. Even though I found that not to be true. It is rumored that George left England to escape some crime he had commited and that his family that lived there were very well off. Family members were concerned that the family in England would try and claim property that was owned by George's son William after he died. But all this is speculation we cannot find any proof of George's birth in England or Ireland. We have found one person that is a perfect match to our DNA that lives in England, but he is not an Armstrong. I wish I could find a record for George's marriage to Theresa and maybe even land records, but right now we have found nothing. Any ideas you might have would certainly be appreciated.

I know Bob Armstrong the Co-administrator of the Family Tree Armstrong DNA project has really studied the lines and could probably tell you if you match closer to Ireland, Scotland or England. By 1790 Armstrongs were all over the globe. About 1607 some Armstrongs from the border (both sides) went to Ireland with the Grahams (forced out by James I). There are some early Ireland records of some of these lines. Also in Bewcastle and Lanercost Cumberland some Armstrongs also emigrated to Ireland to escape death sentences. Early Armstrongs emigrated mostly into PA. Are you sure that your George came over after being born in Ireland or GB and was not already there in 1790, a lot of Armstrongs were already there in 1790.

Thanks for your look up, I would need to find the decendents of these people, to see if there could be a DNA match to my ancestor. That would be the only way to know for sure. I guess I would have to search the family trees to see if any of them have these people in their tree. NOTE: we are automatically alerted from ancestry.com and YTDNA when any new people match our DNA.

Father Alexander mother Eleanor Day.

Prerog Ct Will of Ireland of Alexander A* of Dublin dated 25 May 1792, proved 26 Mar 1793.

In Stanwix, Cumberland : xng 3 Nov 1793 son of Henry A* and Ann James.
You obviously have some YDNA results from your line of Armstrong's to compare with who ever volunteers.. But I'm curious if you've done a YSearch ( www.ysearch.org )with the YDNA results that you have To see if there is anyone out there who has already tested that might compare with you?

Armstrong/Crawford in Ontario, Canada

It looks as though the "English" in my family is actually Canadian English, from right around 1900. Going back a generation, Richard ARMSTRONG b. 1857 of Wellington, Ontario married Jane CRAWFORD b. 1864. I only know of one child thus far, Agnes Jane ARMSTRONG b. 1882 in either Ontario or Michigan (conflicting information). Agnes married Arthur (John or W) TOZER, approximatly 1900 would be my guess. Their first child, Richard J b. 1901, was supposedly born in Ontario. Two or three later sons were born in Buffalo, NY: Orville (?), William b. 1910, and my paternal grandfather, Robert E., 1917-1986.

I am just starting my research, so any additional information on the Canadian Armstrong or Crawford families in particular would be appreciated. If you have more accurate information concerning the American children as well, please let me know.

Based on information I JUST found, I was wondering if this bible mentions an Agnes Armstrong from Ontario, Canada marrying Arthur John Tozer of Buffalo, NY, probably right around 1900 or just before. If so, I would love to get my hands on that information!

Re: African-American ARMSTRONG, McRae and Lucas Families of North Carolina

Yesterday I was out taking pictures of requests for Find a Grave and I stop by a very small cemetery at the Bethel AME Zion Church in Spring Lake, NC. I am in the Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, and none of my ancestors or my son's ancestors are here. (My family is from South Dakota, and my son's is from Kentucky and Indiana). Anyway, I took a picture of almost every gravestone in this cemetery, but to no avail, there is no such place listed on Find a Grave, so today I got interested in a stone I found there. Warren Lowell Lucas. Warren Lucas is a vet, and I am thinking about placing flags on the two or three vet headstones in this cemetery for Memorial Day. There are several Lucas's buried here. One Ambrose Lucas 1909-2008 has an obit where it listed the cemetery as "Lucas Cemetery" After reading your post along with Mr Jones' I believe that this picture might be related to you. If you know the name of this cemetery, it would help me out. I am going to stop by the Church one day this week and see if they have any records. Or go to the Funeral home that I have seen listed on two obits.

My son is a descendent of slaves in Kentucky so I know how to go to the county clerk office, stomp through graveyards, and interview neighbors. If you need some leg work I am willing to help. This mystery is exciting me again about Family History. Can't wait until the 1940's census tomorrow.
