Question How did previous researchers tie these people together

I have a Q? for anyone willing to answer.

How did previous Arney surname family researchers "tie" these people together?
(because, at this point, truly, I don't know)

How did they know, that . . .

Jacob Arney and Anna Ursula Kron, were the parents of:
Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. (1755-1834)
Adam "Lawerence" Arney (1751-1802)
Johann Heinrich "Henry" Arney, Sr. (1755-1830)
Anna Elisabeth Arney-Setser/Setzer (1761-1849)

What documentation (or as I refer to it, "DTP" Definitive Tangible Proof) did they find that led them to these conclusions?

Jacob Arney and Elizabeth (surname/maiden name, unconfirmed), were the parents of:
Peter Arney (1772-1845)
Catherine Arney-Edleman (1774-????)

Until the 1850 US Federal Census, as a research tool, the names of individuals in a "household" were not individually mentioned (yes, we all know this)

So, how did they know:

Peter Arney and Margaret (surname/maiden name, unknown), were the parents of:
Margaret Arney (1793-????)
Adam Arney (1797-1870)
Henry Arney (1799-????)
John Arney (1802-1880)
Hiram Arney (1804-????)
Lucretia Arney (1805-????)
William Arney (1815-1880)
Matthew Arney (1818-1902)
James Arney (1822-1865)
Hardy Arney (1827-1880)

After all, Peter Arney died in 1845, 5 years before the 1850 US Federal Census.

Henry Arney (1799-????), can "supposedly" be found in the 1830 & 1840 Census, but disappears after that (meaning he can't be found, anywhere).

Hiram Arney (1804-????), cannot be found in any Tennessee Census, so where did he go after his fathers, Peter's, death?

Q? How did these early Arney family researchers (and I'm talking about a few that did research in the 1950's, like Ms. Edna Williams) fit or tie these people together, to believe they were part of the same family?

I mean, I'm just as guilty as many researchers out there, in this regard, in what I term, "Stand on the shoulders of Others" researching. Meaning, simply "accepting" that these people knew what they researched and were talking about, therefore I can build upon their research to continue mine.

Can someone explain to me, how they were able to tie these people together?

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

None needed, I appreciate the help :) I should probably go back to the link and contact the project manager :)

Since I have you, I noticed you had posted about a year ago in search of some Tennessee wills. I thought I'd mention, in case you haven't discovered it since, that the Family Search site has some state/county records & indexes that I hadn't seen elsewhere. It has a lot of North Carolina probate records, for example. I did check on the Tennessee wills, and a brief check of the Will books in Overton County did not indicate any Arneys, alas. But I'll mention it nonetheless.

I always knew the LDS was a great resource for records in microfilm form, but had more or less forgotten about or didn't even know about their digitized records until recently. So in case you or anyone reading this had the same thoughts, you might want to check out the site again :)

-Paula

I am interested in knowing more about your great grandfather. My family name on my mother's side is Arney and I have traced roots back to the 1700's - Jacob Arney, born 1728 and died 1782. He married Elizabeth Hall (born 1731 and died 1782) and married Anna Ursala Kron (born 1730 and died 1761) in 1748. With the two wifes, he had a ton of kids and I'm wondering if your great-grandfather is related somehow. I am really wanting to find Jacob's parents as it is said we originated from Ireland but I cannot find the connection except that there is a town in Ireland called "Arney." It is rumored that an Arney in Ireland married a Meade, immigranted to the US and that the Meade she married is related to General George Meade from the Civil War. Can you provide any information? Thank you. Jill

Have you learned anything more on the Sarah "Sallie" Patrick issue?

My "best guess" is, that Matthew Arney, Sr. married Sarah "Sallie" Pharris (Farris) first, and that she died young, then he married Sarah "Sallie" Patrick later.

I cannot confirm either of these marriages, due to the loss of early marriage records, with the burning of the Overton County Courthouse, at the end of the Civil War, in 1865.

Also, I have been unable to find Matthew Arney, Sr. in any 1850 US Federal Census.

Wow, now that's a "leap" I haven't seen, until now.

From what has been learned about Jacob Arney (circa 1729-1782), he was "possibly" from Switzerland.
His first wife, was Anna Ursula Kron, who may have died between 1761-1767. Jacob Arney's second wife, Elizabeth (maiden name/surname, unconfirmed), was the name of his wife, at the time of the writing of his Will, in 1782.

Sounds like, Johann Heinrich "Henry" Arney, Sr. and his wife, died pretty close together, he died in September 1830.

You have no idea how excited I am to find your post. My ancestors are the Arney's and I've been trying to find Henry and Maria's children, which you provided. Thank you. I have that Henry Arney (born Heinrich) was born 1755 and died 1830 and he married Maria Magdalena in June 1775 (Maria was born 1755 and died approximately 11-9-1830). I also have records of their son Jacob being married to two women at the same time and who their children are. What I am looking for is who is Jacob's parents and did they originate from Ireland? Thanks!

Laura, I was so excited to find your post about Uncle Thomas Earl. I had a lot of stuff on him, but your information helped alot. My husband, Bill, found Lewis Franklin in Lincoln County, TN. I've posted photos of his house on Swan Creek Road, Lincoln Co., TN on ancestry. com. I've found his ancestry from North Carolina. It has been fun. You are welcome to look at my research. Marlene Odle-Kemp, married to William T. Kemp (Odle-Kemp). His mother was Martha Bell whose father was Thomas Franlin.
Marlene

Some arney genealogy research questions

Fellow Arney researchers,
I have a few Q? for you, if I may.

Can anyone explain to me, where the information about Peter Arney, moving to the area of Wythe County, Virginia, marrying Margaret (surname/maiden name, unknown), and began having his children, came from, is there any such documentation that exists?

Does anyone know, what happened, to Peter's sons, Henry and Hiram (2/3's of the trio, that received Peter Arney's land and property), after they received it? Where did they go, do they appear on any US Federal Census, after 1840, anywhere? Do they appear anywhere (ex. land deals, tax lists, etc.)?

Was William Arney, who appears on the 1840 US Federal Census, State of Tennessee, Overton County, one of Peter Arney's children (who later moved to Randolph County, Illinois)?

Can anyone explain, what happened to most of the Arney's, from the Overton County, Tennessee area, in the 1850 US Federal Census?

Can someone, please tell me, what happened to Matthew Arney, Sr.'s son, Cullom Arney? He appears on the 1860 US Federal Census, State of Tennessee, Overton County, living with his father, Matthew, Sr. (aka Madison), then simply disappears. Was Cullom involved in the American Civil War, and killed during battle?

Can someone explain to me, how many wives did Matthew Arney, Sr. have (1/2)?
All this time, all the information I have seen, stated that Matthew Arney, Sr.'s wife's name was Sarah "Sallie" Farris. However, upon finding the death certificate, of Matthew, Sr.'s youngest son, Jefferson Davis Arney, it lists his parents as Matthew Arney, born in Lillydale, TN, and Sallie Patrick, born in Lillydale, TN.

Looking at the 1860 US Federal Census, State of Tennessee, Overton County
We find Madison (aka Matthew) 43, Sarah 35, Dianah 24, Cullom 22, Irvin 18, John 16, Sarah 13, Anna 11, Mary 8, Matterson (aka Matthew), twin 8, Jonah (aka Josiah), twin 8, Amanda 3, and Janthey 3/12.

If Sarah, was the birth mother of Dianah & Cullom, and all three ages are correct, Sarah would have been 11 years old, when Dianah was born, and 13 years old, when Cullom was born, not impossible, by highly improbable.

Is it possible, that Matthew Arney, Sr. married one woman, she died, and he married another woman, soon after? Unfortunately, we have not found Matthew Arney, Sr., anywhere in any 1850 US Federal Census, that would help answer these questions.

There are some clues, in the 1850 US Federal Census, that we can find and use though.

Peter Arney's children (that we know of)
Margaret (1793), Adam (1797), Henry (1799), John (1802), Hiram (1804),
Lucretia (1805), William (1815), Matthew (1818), James (1822), Hardy (1827).

1850 US Federal Census, State of Illinois
St. Clair County, Margaret Arney 62 (1788)
Fayette County, James Arney 30 (1820), Lucrecia Stigall 40 (1810)

1850 US Federal Census, State of Kentucky
Cumberland County, Adam Arney 51 (1799)

[So, it "appears" that, at least, 4 of Peter's children, moved out of State (Tennessee), but 3 of them returned by 1860]

1860 US Federal Census, State of Tennessee, Overton County
Margaret Arney 70 (1790), Adam Arney 63 (1797), Madison Arney 43 (1817), James Arney 38 (1822), Hardy Arney 35 (1825)

1860 US Federal Census, State of Tennessee, Johnson County
John Arney 58 (1802)

1860 US Federal Census, State of Illinois, Randolph County
William Arney 43 (1817)

1860 US Federal Census, State of Texas, Collin County
Lucrecia Stegall 52 (1808)

1860 US Federal Census
No Henry, or Hiram

If you can help answer any of these questions, for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Stan Arney
Wichita, KS

Probably the easiest way for me to tell you to access David M. Friscia's helpful list of Christian Arney descendents which he had compiled (at least as of his post dated 8/2011) is simply to check my post history. It actually came up as I was searching Arney info, under another post titled "wills and probates" from Sherry Bean, and that is what's listed on my post history. Click on that and see what happens! (and let me know, please)
Another suggestion: search for info on Jacob Earney 1790-1859. Kay
PS Mr. Friscia's considerable research, documentation, and generosity (At least I hope he doesn't mind it's being passed on; it was out there on the Message Board in 2000...) is most appreciated.
About John Friscia's detailed Arney tree: The same day I read your first post I came across his early posting in 2000 in looking at Message Boards "Arney - Family History & Genealogy Message Board". His was the second post that came up.
David M. Friscia Surnames: Arney Earney Posted 9 Aug 2000
"A Generations report follows that includes the information I have. Please, note that I have elected to use artificial but consistant surnames in my database.

Descendants of Christian Arney
(And the Generation lists begin, and continue for 11 pages, as he documents his sources at the end)
I hope this helps!
Hey thanks for the info! Yeah, I did notice quite a few offspring amongst the info I had gathered so far!

I have to say that I'm rather surprised at this whole burial mystery. Beyond the usual official haunts (well, online anyway, visiting the area is still on the "someday" list), I've hunted through hundreds of posted trees, and while I know better than to take any of that info as gospel (I treat any information I find there to be "clues", though!), I have yet to come across *anyone* having his or Elizabeth's death or burial information. Usually somebody has *something*, even if it can't be verified.

I'm also mystified as to the disappearance of David M. Friscia's tree. He seems to have vanished and taken his tree with him. If anyone reading this knows where he (and/or his info) might be, I'd appreciate knowing!

Had trouble locating the Carpenter book. I'll let you know when I have better luck!

-Paula

Here's a little info on John E.'s brother, Jonathan: m. Mary Elizabeth Chunn 11 Feb 1869; according to census records, in 1870 (age 21) lived in Hamilton, Catawba Co., NC; post office, Catawba Station. 1880, lived in Catawba Village, Catawba Co., NC (age 31). Reuben Henry and Elisabeth with him then. 1900, Lincolnton township, Lincoln Co., NC (age 51)Appears the household consisted of 13, including in-laws and grandchildren. Mary died in 1903; Jonathan remarried, and died 1 Feb 1914. Mary and Jonathan are buried at Pisgah United Methodist Church cemetery on the Gastonia Highway, near Lincolnton.
I've search cemetery records and haven't found Elisabeth (Betsie) C. Arney and Reuben Henry yet! I still hope that perhaps a family bible will turn up with information about them! I'll let you know if I discover anything and would really appreciate it if you could let me know if you learn anything relative to them, too. Thanks!! KJM

Me again. I'm embarrassed to say I don't have a death date or burial place for Jonathan, either! Can you help me with that? :)

I'm wondering if perhaps Reuben & Elizabeth are buried where Jonathan is, since Elizabeth probably died while living with Jonathan & family? But I guess you'd have found it yourself if that were the case.

Mmmph. More searching. You'd think since Reuben died after 1910 that there'd be more of a record of it!

Wow, that's funny - I only just discovered the North Carolina death certificates on Ancestry & spent an afternoon following Jonathan & his descendants (mostly as those were the ones I found first, hee!). Lizzie's one of the ones I did not catch up with (yet), though - but I hadn't started playing with marriage records yet... obviously she married!

Anyhoo..

When I was doing my earlier search of Arneys, I'd honestly been so preoccupied with determining my exact relationship to John Esley that I hadn't yet followed Reuben & Elizabeth - in fact, I don't (yet) even have their death dates!

Last I saw Reuben was in the 1900 Census, living with John Esley & family in Burke County. Elizabeth was gone by that point. I have the Burke County cemetery books here and he is not in them (though he could be unmarked), but in 1880, they're living with your great grandfather in Catawba, so it's likely she died in Catawba and they might have buried here there. Just a guess. They lived in Lincoln County for many years before that, so maybe a family thing in Lincoln?

Drat, I have a book tracing the Carpenters back - it *might* have a location for Elizabeth. But I left it at my parents' house. I'll get it next time I'm there (same city), and see what it has to say.

When I first started hunting, I found a terrific tree put together by David M. Friscia. Alas, I can't find hide nor hair of it now - every link I can find goes to a broken page :(

Now you've got me curious. :)

-Paula

My line, can be traced from Peter Arney, born in 1772, in Tryon County, North Carolina, to his father, Jacob Arney, whose original Will, still exists, at the North Carolina State Archives, in Raleigh, NC. His Will is dated in 1782, and was probated in 1784, so his death year was probably 1784.

This same Jacob Arney, was the father, of Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., who was born in 1750, in York(town), York County, Pennsylvania, and died in the Spring 1834, in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

This Jacob Arney, along with his family, left Pennsylvania, around 1767, moving to the area of Tryon County, North Carolina. Later Tryon County was dissolved, and became part of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr., stated that he lived in or near the town of Lincolnton, when he entered into service, of the American Revolutionary War, and had lived there ever since, where he also died.

Hi, my great-grandfather was Jonathan C. Arney, brother of your 3rd great-grandfather. (My grandmother, Lizzie Arney married at age 29, after being the primary care-taker of her mother; and seemed to establish a pattern of later marriages; hence the relative closeness of generations.) I have a question for you, "cousin," (!) In your search regarding John Esley, have you come across a date of death and/or burial place for his and Jonathan's parents, Reuben Henry and Elisabeth? No doubt if we find one, we would find the other. It may be that they were buried on a home site; wouldn't we like to know where, though? It could lead to finding other ancestral burial places for the early Arney pioneers in NC. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! Kay

I just hope you are still receiving Message Board alerts from Ancestry! I tried sending an email but it didn't go through.
Your mention of having info regarding the Swiss line of the Arney's dating back to 1705 it of great interest to me. I've a North Carolina connection to Jacob Arney, the NC land grant recipient who emigrated from Pennsylvania in the 1700's, through my grandmother, Elizabeth Arney Hines. Hope you get this, a response to your 2002 post, in June, 2011!
My info stems from NC--my mother's home town of Lincolnton--and still I've much to learn. However, if you have your own questions, and any of my "answers" might suffice, I'd certainly be glad to share. Thanks. Kay

Reuben Henry Arney/Earney

This ancestor's death date and place of burial continues to be a mystery for me! Born in 1821, he was the son of John Arney (1788-1837) and grandson of the pioneer Christian Arney (1750-1834). In the 1880 census Reuben H. Arney and wife Elisabeth (Carpenter) Arney were living in Catawba, a small village in Catawba County, NC with their son, Jonathan/Johnathn C. Arney and his family. In 1900 Henry Arney was living with another son, John, in Silver Creek, Burke County, NC (near Morganton). R. Henry was then 78.
Some trees have Henry's place of death in France. I would love to know anything someone who is researching the Arney family may know about Reuben Henry Arney. THANKS! K. Mann

Mr. Friscia,

Do you happen to have copies of all of Ms. Edna Williams, "We Are The Arney's" periodicals?

I know, it's been 11 years, since this post, and you may not use this email address anymore.

I'm researching my family surname, of ARNEY, and have been trying to find copies of these periodicals.
Since, I can't speak with Ms Williams, perhaps I can learn, from her periodicals. I'm especially interested in learning, if she noted any of her sources.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

Edna Williams and her, "We Are The Arney's" periodicals

Fellow Arney researchers,

One of the most quoted sources, on the Arney surname, is Ms. Edna Williams, and her, "We Are The Arney's", periodicals.

Does anyone know, how Ms. Edna Williams, is doing these days, I have not heard from her, in years, only that her health, due to age, wasn't well, that was a few years ago, I have tried emailing her, but have not received a response. If I have missed her "passing", then shame on me.

Also, does anyone have any copies, of her periodicals, "We Are The Arney's"?

Since, it's one of the most quotes sources, when it comes to Arney genealogy research, it would be nice to know, what information, it contained.

I'm praying, to be able to read those periodicals, and find the original sources, she obtained, to confirm information, on our family tree.

Most importantly, to see where she found documentation regarding our biggest mystery, Jacob Arney.

She originally found information, that lead her to the belief, that Jacob Arney, was the son of Frederick Ernigh. Before I lost contact with her, I had the misfortune to have to share with her, documentation that showed, it was not possible.

I'm praying to find her sources, that lead her to that conclusion, so that I might be able to retrace her research steps, and maybe learn, more about our Jacob Arney, and finally solve the mystery of our Jacob, once and for all. Who were our Jacob Arney's parents, who were his siblings, where was he born, where was his parents born, why was he in York(town), York County, Pennsylvania, in 1749, and 1750, when his son, Christian "Christy" Arney, Sr. was born, etc.?

Anyone, who might know the answers to these questions, please reply.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.
Arney descendants of Peter Arney 1772 to 1845

Fellow Arney researchers,

As you know, genealogy is based on documentation, a customary statement is, "document, document, document".

Having said this, may I ask each of you, how much "documentation" do you truly have?
How much, DTP (Definitive Tangible Proof), do you have, that your ancestors are your true ancestors?

For example, my ancestors include:

Jacob Arney, born ? left his Will dated in 1782, and probated in 1784 (therefore his death year is "assumed" 1784).

[Note: For Jacob Arney, the only true DTP, I have, is a copy of his actual Will, which due to ink fading, adds little to the names of his children, but mention his wife, Elizabeth.]

Jacob Arney > Peter Arney, born 1772 (Tryon County, North Carolina), died 1845 (Overton County, Tennessee).

[Note: For Peter Arney, the only true DTP, I have, is his name on an 1801 Petition to halt the annexation of Smith and Wilson Counties, his name on the 1802 Tax Roll for Jackson County, Tennessee, his name on the purchase of 300 acres of land, in Overton County, Tennessee, from John Sevier, in 1814, his name appears, on the US Federal Census, for Overton County, Tennessee, for the years 1820-1840, the 1836 Tax Roll for Overton County, Tennessee, and in 1845, deeds giving his land and property, to 3 sons (Matthew, Henry, and Hiram), therefore his "assumed" date of death in August 16th, 1845]

Jacob Arney > Peter Arney > Matthew Arney, Sr, born 1818 (Overton County, Tennessee), died in 1902 (Pickett County, Tennessee).

[Note: For Matthew Arney, Sr., the only true DTP, I have, is his name on the US Federal Census, 1820-1840, 1860 & 1870, in Overton County, Tennessee, 1880, in Clay County, Tennessee, 1900, in Pickett County, Tennessee, deeds giving his land to his son, Jefferson Davis Arney, his son-in-law Belve Wilborn, and his daughter-in-law Cordelia Heard, and one picture.]

Jacob Arney > Peter Arney > Matthew Arney, Sr. > William Ervin Arney, born 1841, in Overton County, Tennessee, died 1887 (Pickett County, Tennessee).

[Note: For William Ervin Arney, the only true DTP, I have, his name on the US Federal Census, in Overton County, Tennessee, in 1860 & 1870, and in 1880, in Clay County, Tennessee, his military record during the American Civil War, his marriage record, in 1868 to Sarah "Sallie" Jouett, his wife's "widow pension" stating his death, and his grave marker.]

Jacob Arney > Peter Arney > Matthew Arney, Sr. > William Ervin Arney > Otha Jouett Arney, born January 30th, 1875 (Pickett County, Tennessee), died April 26th, 1956 (Overton County, Tennessee).

[Note: For Otha Jouett Arney, the only true DTP, I have, his name on the US Federal Census, Clay County, Tennessee, in 1880, 1900-1920, Pickett County, Tennessee, and 1930, in Clay County, Tennessee, a few pictures, and his grave marker.]

Jacob Arney > Peter Arney > Matthew Arney, Sr. > William Ervin Arney > Otha Jouett Arney > Stanley Goble Arney, born November 27th, 1909 (Monroe, Overton County, Tennessee), died May 12th, 1979 (Livingston, Overton County, Tennessee).

[Note: For Stanley Goble Arney, the only true DTP, I have, his name on the US Federal Census, Pickett County, Tennessee, in 1920, Overton County, Tennessee, in 1930, his marriage record, in 1929, to Bertha Claudine Melton, living, a few pictures, and his grave marker.]

Q? How do I know, these people are actually related?
After all, I have no actual birth or baptism record, for any of these men, thereby showing their parents names.

Just because, someone, places them on a "family tree", doesn't make it so.

Yes, I know, the way I first learned of them, was from a hand-drawn family tree that was sent to me, by a cousin, Col. Cloyd Arney (who has since, passed away).

Many of the early researchers, those who began research in the 1950's, etc., we no longer are blessed with access to (they have either retired, finished their research, are in "assisted living facilities", or have passed away), so we cannot ask them, what documentation did you find, that gave you the idea, these people were definitely related?

As I was reflecting, on my own research today, I asked myself this Q?
How do I know these people are definitely my ancestors?

Just because the names, seem to "click", ex. same surnames, living in the same area, etc.

Especially, since the fire that destroyed early Tennessee records in Overton County, Tennessee, during the American Civil War, the loss of birth records, etc.
How did those researchers, find documentation, that put these people together as relatives (our ancestors), what documentation did they find?

Did they find church records, meaning the church recordings of births/baptisms and marriages? Since the Courthouse records were destroyed, that doesn't mean that actual church records were lost, if there were any.

I mean, once the US Federal Census, began recording more than just "head of household" names, we can find the names of wife's and children.

One drawback to that is the 1850 US Federal Census, our Arney ancestors, in Overton County, Tennessee, seem to have disappeared (vanished, without-a-trace).

What are your thoughts, on what I'm saying?

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

I have only found out recently that death certificates are not always accurate. I thought they were a legal document, but my fathers first family did not have their death certificates filled out until 30 years after his two children from his first wife died. I got in touch with the Chancery Clerks office and he said it was an individuals option in earlier days. I did not know that did you? Also families are updating their family stones because they have become unreadable, or broken. That brings into play that dates may be different. Findagrave is a wonderful tool, but just like genealogy if it is not reported right it will lead us into a maze. I have not communicated with very many people from Ancestry, but thought I would share this uncertainty with you. Hope you do not mind!

On Jefferson Davis Arney, Death Certificate it listed his
mother's name as Sallie "Sarah" Arney. Also the day's date is
different, from the date on his headstone.(findagrave.com)

I have been researching over the last couple months on the
Patrick Family. And what I can find so far is Sarah Arney
mother's maiden name was Pharris.
I think Cloyd Arney, might of skip the Patrick family, on
the lack of information. And then change the spelling of
Pharris to Farris.

John P. Arney is John Preston Arney, and is Mathew Arney's
son. Source is his Death Certificate.

We've done this once before -- in '04, and as my best assistant he came through fine, me too!

I'll begin by pulling from a couple already-scanned photos and give a brief sketch - and go from there as I can. Obviously, I think my grandmother, Elizabeth C. Arney, is the cream of the bunch, so will introduce you to her, via email to your address. kjm
