I do not know if you are still interested in what I have as of now. Leonard Arras is my grandfather's grandfather. He did have two wives. Josephine Greenert and Clara Bertha Fair. If you search for my page Arris Oren Family Tree and email me and will try to work with you. Michele

Links to German Church Records & and a Question

I am an Arras decendant; here is my line.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12048143/family?cfpid=-345614...

My question has to do with the following two individuals: Did Anna Eva Arris marry John Kropp?

Arras Family in Winterkasten; Anna Eva Arras, b. 1806
http://www.online-ofb.de/namelist.php?nachname=ARRAS&ofb...

Johann Kropp b. 1806
http://www.online-ofb.de/famreport.php?ofb=winterkasten&...

The only Anna Eva I can find that works with the birth date we have is Anna Eva Arras, b. 2 Jan 1806. That is the birth date of John's wife. They have four known children: Adam Cyrus 1830-33, Hesse-Darmstadt (I think his name may be Adam Arras as his middle name is given in only one census...as Adam Eryres Kropp rather than the Adam Cyrus Kropp printed in a 1880 county history.); John Kropp, b. 1834-35 Rheineland, on way to America (Anna Eva Arras was "with child" when they left, but there is no Adam. Could Adam has been the unborn child??? since they left in 1831; Anna Eva Kropp, b. 1837 Ohio; and Henry Kropp, b. 1845, Missouri. By 1860 the family is in Hancock County, Illinois, where they stay until 1895, moving to Kansas.

I cannot find an immigration record for John Kropp 1806 and Adam Cyrus Kropp, b. 1830-33. But they were here by 1845, although census records for John Kropp give 1848 and 1853. There is a John Kroop in 1840 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

Dates do not work for Anna Eva Arras to be John Kropp's wife, unless he came with her family...and he may have. I've searched database of immigrants and can't find him.

Does anyone have any information that might provide a clue?

Have fun with the genealogy.net source. I'm still learning how to navigate the site.
Marilyn

To whom it may concern:
I am an Arras directly decended from Johan Peter Arras who emigrated to America in 1831 and settled in North West Ohio, near Jenera, OH. I have a large collection of family history given to me by my Uncle Theron Henry Lamont Arras (deceased). Theron spent about 30 years uncovering the Arras family history and has corresponded with Arras family in various parts of America and Germany. There is still an Arras family farm in Germany.
Dave Arras

Hi Jeff,
My grandfather was George Robinson Arras, great Grandfather William Arras, mother Corrine Maxson Arras Brunhoelzl. I converted to the family name after my parents had a nasty divorce. My sister and son have been working on the family tree under Harris/ von Arras link: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12227394/family
and can probably take you back two more generations so far. The Arras castle, still standing in Alf on the Mosel from which our family originally came dates back to the early 900's. Louis XIV of France wrecked havoc on the castle in the 17th century when the family relocated. Joan

Thanks for the info Joan. So I guess this means your grandfather was George Robinson Arra (1894-1958). Then is your father George W Arras or Robert G Arras ? Your, and Nancy's great-grandfather William Arras(1865-1914) was the brother of my great-grandmother Amelia Arras (1860-1915). Among the 10 siblings in this immediate family was also Louisa Arras (1857-1917) who married August Finck (1854-1905). Do you have any info on this family ? I have a number of names and dates and know that they owned a remarkable estate in the Hudson River Valley (Rhinebeck, NY). Also, do you have any info on ancestors of William Arras (1830-1888) ? My Arras line info stops at William. Thanks and Regards, Jeff Christensen

Hi Jeff and cousin Nancy,
There were 3 Arras inns in NYC owned by my grandfather George and his brother William. They were on 42nd St across from Grand Central Station-a business man's lunch where "Diamond" Jim Brady dined, at 204th St and Broadway recently showcased in the article Nancy found, and at the end of the subway line in Riverdale at Van Cortlandt park. The latter facility was more of a large weekend retreat/ hofbrau house type of facility where people could drink and dine while enjoying the park.
Joan von Arras

I entered the name William Arras and quite a few articles came up. It was a lot of fun going through the old newspapers. It seems that William Arras (my great grandfather) ran a few bowling and other sporting events in Fair haven, NJ.
I am going to look for more info on the Arras Inn.
All the best!
Link: http://rbr.mtpl.org/rbr/
Nancy

ARRAS Willard B. 1908-2007 b. Hancock County, Ohio

Willard B. Arras died Dec. 12, 2007. He was 99 years old. He was born Sept. 13, 1908, near Jenera, Ohio (Hancock County), to Henry and Johannia (Crates) Arras.

He married Electa Coldren in 1934; she died in 1993. They had been married 59 years and lived their entire married life in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Mr. Arras retired from the Air Force Logistics Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with 32 years of service.
Hello David,
I will have my Mother bring the family history book over to my house for Christmas so I can trace back where we are related. We are connected, but I will have to look very far back for the connection. My family line came to America a few hundred years ago and eventually settled in Illinois near St. Louis Missouri. I know we landed in Pennsylvania from Germany. The ship they were on almost sank. This is what I can remember from the book. We are connected as of several hundred years ago. Thank you for your reply!
Julie (Arras) Crossley

My maiden name was Julie Arras, my father's name was Norman Arras and my great Grandfather's name was John Arras. I would love to visit the castle some day with my family. I have learned about the Arras Castle from our family history book.

William, I think I can clarify some the family lore you heard (but not about any relationship to the Kaiser !). Your mother Ruth's parents I believe were Willaim Arras Vix and Hopewell Bingham (correct ?). William Arras Vix's parents were George Vix Sr. and Amelia Arras. Amelia Arras's parents were William Arras and Phillipine Schaeffer. One of Amelia Arras's siblings was Louisa Arras. Louisa Arras married August Finck. August Finck's parents were Andrew Finck (born 16-Oct-1829 in Bavaria (Germany) and Elisabeth Lauer born 17-Sep-1826 also in Bavaria. Now, Andrew Finck and his wife Elisabeth come to America. Their son August Finck is born 8-Sep-1854 in New York City. Andrew Finck is a brewer, building up the Finck Brewery in NYC which was one of the major breweries. The 1869 New York City Directory included the following entry: "Finck Andrew, brewer, 326 W. 39th, h 320 W. 39th". The brewery thrives, eventually the son August joins his father in the business. The 1890 New York City Directory included the following entry: "Finck A. & Son, brewers, 326 W. 39th". The business does pretty well apparently because Andrew Finck bought the Wyndeclyffe estate (built 1859) near Rhienbeck, NY, which later became known as the Finck Castle. Back then, many of the super rich had estates up the Hudson. August Finck inherited the estate and left it to his heirs (August Finck and Louisa Arras had 5 children). Somewhere along the line August Finck's heirs lost their fortune, perhaps Prohibition ? I don't know. I don't know (perhaps the Depression) but Finck Castle was not maintained by anyone else, fell into disrepair and finally into ruins. The ruins are still standing. So, thats the story about the wealthy family with a brewery and an estate. Regards, Jeff

Hello Family,
I am especially interested in what my Mom Ruth (Arras) (Vix) Tisch told me before she passed away. She said we were related somehow to the Kaiser, but I do not know how or which Kaiser. I believe it most liky is through the Vix or Arras lineage and also she told me that they also owned a very large and well off brewery in NYC. It may have been sold or taken over by the Shaeffer brewing company or Pillipine Schaeffer had something to do with it. These are all questions needed to be answered. I appreciate any assistance. Hope your well Jeff.
Take Care,
William (Arras) (Vix) Tisch

Yes, it is interesting. There must be a connection. I have the Schaeffer records going back to a Philippe Schaeffer (1599-1676). He was married to Jean Roupert Berger (no dates). She was not the only woman with a French name married to a Schaeffer. There were also Jeanne Gertraud Guidonne, Agnes Filbert, Margaretha Tilly. The name Arras can be French. I have the names of the 2 generations before Maria Arras. I would be happy to give you details if needed. Thank you for your message. Norman Clary

Yes, seems interesting that these are the same family names but I can't identify any linkage. The Phillipine Schafer I have in my records I believe was born abt 1833 in Baden. Her husband William Arras born abt 1830 in Darmstadt. So, its possible they were a next generation of Schafers/Arras's from the same region of Germany as the ones you note, but I have no information that could shed any more light on these families, from that period, in that vicinity.
Hi, I have the Arras family from Unterkleingumpen Germany. My ancestor was Nicholas who married Elizabetha Tritsch born in Winterkasten, Germany. They married in Chambersberg, PA in 1827 and wound up in Dayton, Ohio. They had four children. My great grandmother was their youngest. Her name was Hanna Maria. Does this align with your family?

I have been trying to look this person up. His is my grandmother's grandfather. He is on a few census records. But I can not find anything of his parents or of anything about him before he came to America, which was in the 1880's. I have listings that have him married to a Caroline Greenert and then a Clara B. I can find nothing on these two women. I know he came from Germany, single and 18, to Pennsylvania. That is all I can find on him. If anyone else knows some info on him that would be great. Arras has also been spelled Arris and Arres.

Thanks
Jacquelyn
