Hola Felipe,

Joaquin Mendez Gaztambide

Greetings,

After coming across your inquiry regarding the Gaztambide and Arrillaga families I thought that you might appreciate what i have to tell.
Arrillaga is a name of Basque origin and although I am not sure of the exact meaning I can tell you that a Basque name that ends in -aga refers to a rock. My last name is Gaztambide on my mother's side and it means "the path of the chestnut trees". If you are of Puerto Rican descent, then we are related. I belong to the well known Gaztambide family that has its roots mainly in the town of Anasco, Puerto Rico. We have been able to trace our family back to Navarre in Northern Spain where there are many Gaztambides and in France there are many as well in the Basque region of the Pyrenees. At one time the Navarre was an important kingdom that spanned the Western Pyrennes in both Spain and France.
Dr. Carlos Gaztambide Arrillaga was my cousin and I knew him extremely well as I do his children and grandchildren. We are all very close. My grandfather, Demetrio Antonio Gaztambide y Cuebas was his first cousin. Our Gaztambide relatives lived not only in Anasco, but also in Las Marias, San Sebastain, Mayaguez and Sabana Grande. An intersting fact about us is that Carlos brothers Mario and Ruben were instrumental in the formation of the Estado Libre Asociado along with Don Munoz Marin and many other illustrious Puerto Ricans.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to persue the interesting history of our family.

Your relative,
Joaquin Mendez Gaztambide

Hello. I am interested in some additional information about Esteban Ojeda. You stated he was a son of Sonia Arillaga Montalvo and Sergio Ojeda. I have two Esteban Ojeda's in my family tree. Could you tell me the place of birth and date of birth of Esteban Ojeda Arillaga, and the names of his children? My Estebans eventually lived in Manati, Morovis, and Ciales Puerto Rico. I have also found a record of an Esteban Ojeda in the militia of Manati in 1810.

I believe that Vincent is my great grandfather. My grandfather's name is James Arrillaga. I have a copy of his marriage license which lists his father as Vincent de Arrillaga, born in California, and his mother as Amelia Hemphill, born in Ohio. James married Theresa Opusich in San Francisco on 28 September, 1925. Their daughter, Cecelia Mary, my mother, was born April 22, 1926 in San Francisco. Their marriage license lists Theresa as James's first wife, although I believe he was married at least three times. He died July, 15, 1996 in Oklahoma. He was survived by his wife Mattie. I do not know if she is still alive. Let me know if you would like copies of James's marriage license or Cecelia's birth certificate. I may also have documents directly relating to Vincent and will have to check my files. I would love to share information about the de Arrillaga/Arrillaga/Ariga family with you. By the way, I believe that both Santiago and Vincent were musicians and had a music college in San Francisco early in the 20th century. I will look for a copy of phone listing for the college.
