Hi there I am told by researchers in my family that we are related to Thomas Arrowsmith b, abt 1771 who married an Elizabeth Darlington (there is a slight name mismatch with at one point the surname as Harrowsmith however hopefully this is just misunderstandings of time). If you put the following into a search on Google or similar You should get the info I've got that the Heathcote Family in the USA have posted and your John should is in there.
John Arrowsmith-P3547015052-Individual Information-PhpGedView
Hope this helps not hinders
Raine

Hi,

I just posted an old death notice for James ARROWSMITH of New York City, who died at Trinidad de Cuba in 1863.
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of The New-York Times newspaper (NY, NY) dated December 14, 1863, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/jarrowsmith12141863cuba.html
I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_ny.html
http://theoldentimes.com/deaths.htm
http://theoldentimes.com

Most of the Oil paintings in the house are of the Arrowsmith era. I am hoping the probate of Martha Dykes will have some sort of inventory list. We know that her heir sold everything and then had the money sent to her/him. Mrs. Arrowsmith did sell some of the paintings to the next owner of Goodwood.

If you google Goodwood Museum and Gardens you can see some historical photos.
I have been doing the historical research on Goodwood Museum for over 12 years and would love to have the history of the oil paintings finally answered. thanks for your input.

He inherited around £6,000 from his aunt who had inherited from her sister Martha. Does that make sense?
Brief probate details can be found on ancestry, I think the full details are in the British Archives London.

I would be interested to hear about any details when the estate passed from Elizabeth Arrowsmith to Martha Dykes, if there are any.
I will try to find out more information fron the National Archives to see if there is any remaining documentation from the wills.

Thank you for the photograph, I have none of Martha but I do have one of her sister in law. Probably no help at all!

I am still looking into the Arrowsmith connection and will let you know if I find anything useful.
I have quite alot of info about the Dykesshould you ever need it.

Many Thanks

Tracy

Thank you

Martha is buried in a Tallahassee, Florida cemetary. Next time I am in Tallahassee I can photograph the headstone and send to you. I will also search for the probate. Do you know how much Martha was worth at her death or how much your ggg grandfather inherited from Martha.

Thank you very much for your information. The Arrowsmiths & Dykes are our most mysterious families, but are slowly coming to light.

Attached is a detail of a very grainy photograph that may be Martha Dykes (left) and Elizabeth Arrowsmith (right) taken on the front lawn of Goodwood and dated 1911, the year that Elizabeth sold the plantation. Goodwood would dearly love to have better images of the ladies and especially need one of William Lamb Arrowsmith, as we have none.

Hi
I think the image I sent to you will be that of Martha's brother W A S Dykes, her father William Dykes or her grandfather, the wealthy landed gentry proprietor.
I am not sure who, thw family had always believed it was WAS Dykes b.1840, however I sent a scan to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and they believe the fashion he is wearing is from an earlier time.

Tracy

Hi,
Martha Dykes is my G.G.G. Grandfathers Sister! She was born in near Beverly a small town in Yorkshire. Martha was the sixth child of seven born to William Dykes and Ann Sherratt.
My ggg grandfather was the first born child of William and Ann. Interestingly William Astley Sherratt Dykes my ggg father was a doctor, he trained in Scotland, as did his younger brother John Swindells Dykes who was also a doctor.
I am not sure how the connection between William Lamb Arrowsmith is down to William A S Dykes (1840)or his father William Dykes. William was born in 1816 and was described as a Land surveyor or a civil engineer which fits in, maybe WWilliam Lamb A and William Dykes were friends? There seems to be some kind of influence with two of Williams sons becoming doctors, Interestingly Thomas Dykes b. 1818, Williams Brother was a Chemist and druggist.
Marthd Dykes left all her money to Lavinia Kidd nee Dykes, her elder sister. I have seen the probate documents for this.
I am trying to solve a mystery of my own as I think William and Thomas Dykes and were the children of a wealthy family, (landed gentry) in Yorkshire/Derbyshire. The children were born out of wedlock but William, their father later married Pheobe their mother in Kensington London. He then promptly drops out of all records, he gave up his inheritance to his younger brother and sisters.

All,my investigations began when I was given a pocket portrait by my great uncle, it was painted around 1790-1820. If we can help each other that would be great,
Maany thanks

Tracy Waller

I did find the daughter: Lucy Anne Ellinor Arrowsmith Burke. Born 1859 in England and died 1902 in England. She married Edward Burke in October 10, 1877. He was a master mariner.

Interestingly, they were married in the presence of William Lamb Arrowsmith and Martha Dykes.

I am also a volunteer at Goodwood Museum would love to find out more about Martha Dykes. We have very little information about her and would love to know more. Elizabeth Arrowsmith left everything to her & she died about a year later. Her family in England inherited and enlisted an attorney to sell everything. We do not even have any photographs of her or the Arrowsmiths, which is sad, considering how long Martha & Elizabeth lived at Goodwood.

I am very interested in the information about her father and possible connection with WL Arrowsmith. The Arrowsmiths have been something of a puzzle and any additional information is a boon.

Here is a barebones timeline of WLA I've put together. Any corrections or additions are most welcome. This timeline does not include any information about Lucy (child of Elizabeth & William?) who was born shortly before he left Malta & was included in census records in England. I also found reference to her marriage & divorce (can't remember the guy's name right now, but will go through records), but her trail goes cold after that. Any more information about Lucy Arrowsmith (& Elizabeth Harris) would be greatly appreciated.

William Lamb Arrowsmith:

1821	London	wife Annie Esther born

1841	London	associate of institution of civil engineers (have to be elected)

1841	London	1st child born: Caroline Annie

1841	Malta	queen appointed superintendent of government works & affairs (after RICHARD lankesheer died), HE WAS A CIVIL ENGINEER

1842	Malta	2ND CHILD BORN: BLANCHE ISABEL HARRIET

1843	MALTA	WLA ìPRESENTATION OF DRAWING OF THE CORADINE TANK ERECTED 1841-2, ISLAND OF MALTA, BY WL ARROWSMITHî

1846	MALTA	3RD CHILD BORN: HORACE REGINALD

1847	MALTA	BLANCHE MABEL DIED (NEXT BLANCHE BORN 3 MONTHS LATER)

1847	MALTA	4TH CHILD BORN: BLANCHE MABEL

1849 MALTA	5TH CHILD BORN: ALICE HARRIETTE

1849-54	MALTA	WLA COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS

1850	MALTA	KORBIN CORRECTIVE FACILITY BUILT BY WLA (INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARCHITECT)

1851	MALTA	BLANCHE MABEL DIED

1858 (june) MALTA	CAROLINE ANNIE, MINOR, MARRIED DAVID REID MCKINNON (NOT RESIDENT OF MALTA), WITH HER MOTHERS
CONSENT

1858	MALTA	WHEN HIS WIFE DIED, HE WAS SUPERINTENDENT OF GOV.
Please let me know if any lister ever comes across the diary written on board the "Duke of Marlborough" in 1820 by Joseph Arrowsmith on his voyage to the Cape of Good Hope.
This is apparently only in manuscript form with one copy made, but at which repository could one find it?
Best wishes
Riette

Hello
I believe Martha Dykes is an ancestor of mine, I am trying to figure out how she came to be in the USA other than she was a companion of Elizabeth H Arrowsmith as documented in the 1881 census.
Her father was also a civil engineer which is why there may be a connection as WL Arrowsmith was also a civil engineer.

Any information would be greatfully recieved Yours faithfully Tracy Waller

I have been conducting research on my family line for some years now and have details of Arrowsmiths going back to 1482.

My main area of research focuses on the family from Whitchurh, Bunbury, Salford and Manchester.I am now in the process of verifying the accuracy of the information I have found and would like to share my findings with others researching the same name/geographical area.

My direct line of descent goes through:
Charles 1741 (Malpas)(Grt. x 5 grandfather)
Samuel 1768 (Tushingham)
Samuel 1804 (Whitchurch)
John 1830 (Whitchurch)
Albert Edward 1865 (Manchester)(Grt.

My maternal grandmother, Kate Emily Turner, born Church Stretton 1882, married William Henry Arrowsmith in 1907. Unfortunately WHA died just a year later from TB. On the marriage certificate he gave his occupation as 'dentist', and his father's name as George. His DOB was 1872, calculated from his death certificate. I am struggling to find detail of his birthplace and background, and wonder whether anyone out there was related and has some info.

Obit of James Arrowsmith

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

JAMES ARROWSMITH
OCTOBER 7, 1882

DIED--At his home, four miles southeast of Chatsworth, of the complications of diseases, on Thursday morning, October 5, James Arrowsmith, aged 37 years. Mr. Arrowsmith was born in Wil_____?, England and when a child, with his parents, came to this country and settled in Woodford County, where he grew to manhood and married. He came to this county about six years ago and has since resided on the farm as above mentioned. A man of quiet, m____? manners, strictly honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow-man, this loss at so young an age and at a time when fostering care is most required, is deeply deplored by his wife and four small children, while his aged father and mother are bowed down with grief at this their great loss, which they deeply feel. The funeral took place from the Baptist church, Friday afternoon, the Rev. Charles Ege preaching the funeral discourse and his remains were followed to their last resting place in Chatsworth cemetery by a lorge number of his neighbors and sorrowful friends.
To all concerned,
Im relatively new too looking an not made much progress so far but i did receive a card from my grandad who is orginally from Liverpool now living in Blackpool. This card contained details of his grandad about his funeral with picture full with birth date an date of death as well as address.
This John Arrowsmith died august 6 1930 aged 75 so was born in 1865 and lived at 3 proctor St liverpool, sounds probable that this is the John William Arrowsmith you are searching for. Any other information about the rest of the relatives would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Matthew Arrowsmith

William Arrowsmith

William was a house painter from Tattenhall Chester. My 3x grandmother Sarah Rhoden/Hodkinson is shown living with william in 1901 claiming to be his sister when we know that she was infact living with him as his wife. Sometime between 1891 and 1896 something happened to Sarah,s daughter elizabth davies, and Sarah and william took on Elizabeths four children, Sarahs grandchildren 3 under the age of 5, so William much have been a special kind of man. I can find no death for Elizabeth and her husband Noah Davies seems to have just walked out of his childrens lives does anybody know the story behind this. I have exshausted the Davies and Hodkinson Link so I am left with the Arrowsmith connection, I dont think Sarah and William married but they certainly raised these children when they were in there late 60's so anybody with any info, i would be grateful

I was doing a bit more research yesterday and managed to fill in a few details. The parents of Robert Myers b.1745 were John Myers b.1720 and Elizabeth Hope b.1719. Also have Elizabeth Brewhouse's parents as Robert Brewhouse and Ann Alder. Also have Elizabeth Hope's parents as John Hope and Mary Buck. John's parents are Ralph Hope b.1645 and Ellianor Carr b.1651. Eliannor Carr's parents are John Carr and Elizabeth (no surname).

Thanks

John

Hi Valerie

I have a family tree on this website, not sure how or if you can see it though. I have the tree from George Myers all the way back to myself. A relative produced a family tree for my mother (Audrey) about 6 years ago and I've recently been trying to find more information.

I live in Fife in Scotland now but was born and brought up in Sunderland. Looks as though the family moved from Ferryhill to Ryhope in Sunderland at some point in the past.

Regards

John

Hi

Not sure if this will reach you as your original post was from 7 years ago!

I am a descendant of John Myers and Hannah Arrowsmith. I have a family tree with John and Hannah in it, the furthest back it goes is their parents, George Arrowsmith and Jane Kirtley.

I would be interested to know what information you have.

Thanks

John Myers

I have a photo of Harvey Earl with 2 blond girls, his daughters we presume. I'd love to dig it out and email it to you. He was a good looking young man.
You can contact me at: whiteroc@digisys.net
Vicki

I was tickled to read your line.
From:
Isaac Newton Arrowsmith
Violet Pearl (Arrowsmith) Brown
Byron Brown
Harry Brown....I'm his wife. We have been hoping to contact someone from Earnest's family. A few years ago we connected with several of Rene's children, Margaret & Grace. We are still looking forward to connecting with the offspring of John Arrowsmith too. I will gladly trade whatever information I have with you.
Thank You,
Vicki

David,
Frank Arrowsmith might be the son of John William Arrowsmith (born about 1867) who lived at 36 Rockley St, kirkdale, Liverpool - see 1881 census.
His mother Sarah Arrowsmith who was married to James Jackson Arrowsmith and is my great grandmother.
I hope the the lead is helpful (and correct).
Regards
Andrew Webster
