I am not quite sure how it all fits in yet but I have found census records for my great great grandfather George Arundale, he was married to a Jane Ann and they had two sons at time of census, George and John Thomas. I stupidly did not save what year the census document is from but is the 1860s sometime. They were living in Durham county. Perhaps the family members in your tree as they have similar variations may be from the same family??

I am trying to find some information on the parentage of Henry Kelita Arundel who, according to the UK Census, was born in Staverton, Gloucestershire, England, around 1827.

There were a number of Arundel families in the Gloucester area at this time and I think I have been side-tracked on to the wrong branch while trying to further research on dear old Henry.

What I know?

Henry married Sarah DAVIS in Gloucester in 1858 and they had at least 3 children. I have found William Henry, b.1856, George Kelita, b.1863, d.1863 :-), and Alfred Hubert, b.1863, who is my great grandfather.

Alfred married Jane Elizabeth COLLETT from Harborne, Birmingham, in 1893.

Can anyone help fill any gaps please?

Hi India, Kevin, Arundell researchers. My name is Candace Gray, and I, too, have been looking for the origin of Arundell. Kevin, your information is the most definitive so far. I had a feeling that this name might have it's root in France, but didn't really have anything to base it on. I am a 6th great-granddaughter of Margaret Arundel. World Family Tree estimates her birth between 1719 and 1836, possibly in Bermuda. She married Richard R.W. Conyers b. 1719 d. 09 FEB 1792 in Franklin, NC. Richard and Margaret emigrated from Bermuda to Isle of Wight, Virginia 1741. If anyone has any information about where this couple came from to Bermuda, or about Margaret's parents, siblings, etc.. I would love to hear about it. Thanks. Candace

Hi India ---- it depends on which Arundell you are -- there were several, apparently unconnected, families in medieval times in the UK. Biggest originated in Cornwall, where there were several Arundell families, there was also one in Bristol I believe. I think they originated in Northern France. The french "Hirrondelle", being anglisised to "Arundell"

Re: my Arundell/Arendell ancestors

Matthew Arundel, baptized 6/19/1609 at St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex, England, son of Thomas 1st Baron Arundel of Wardour and his second wife Anne Phillipson, died and was buried 6/2/1620 at St. Andrew's according to Church of England records (St. Andrew Holborn Parish Register, Register of Burials, 1556-1623).

Anne [Hall] wife of Matthew Howard of Lower Norfolk Co., VA has long been speculated to be the daughter of Richard Hall, which has never been proven, never lived in Anne Arundel Co., MD. Richard Hall mentions Matthew, Anne & their children in his 1647 will (Norfolk, VA) but does not state a relationship. Anne & Matthew had several children, but none were named Richard. Nor did Matthew ever use the name Arendell or Arundel.

Matthew Howard's ancestry is unknown, however for many years there has been an effort to connect him to Thomas Arundel and the Ducal House of Norfolk. This Arendell information posted here looks like a continuation of those myths with a new spelling of a surname and no mention of the Howard name.

Both Anne and Matthew Howard died before moving to Maryland -- Lower Norfolk Co., VA. Their children moved to Anne Arundel Co. Matthew is known to have been in VA by 1637 and it is assumed that Anne was there also by that time, however she was definitely there by 1640 when she is mentioned in records.

Hi, there are alot of us about, we seem to originate from Normandy I believe. There is Arundell House in Cornwall which has a lot of details on the Arundell family tree. The Arundell's which I am part of all live within the South East of the UK, Essex, London and Southern home counties. There is also the name Arundell engraved in the walls of Tower of London dating from many years ago.

Hi Charles! I'm researching the ARRINGDALE line that came from either England or Scotland (or both) and first settled in Talbot County MD, then to Muskingum Co. OH. My father did pretty extensive research years ago & no longer has that valuable contribution, but his research had taken him back from the ARRINGDALE name to ARUNDELL/HOWARD/FITZALLEN line & to the ARUNDELL Castle in England. I visited there in 1998 & it is splendid (it sit at the top of the town of Arundell beside the River Arundell! Anyway, your references to ARUNDELL/HOWARD and "From England to MD", and the coincidence of Muskingum Co. OH thrown in for good measure, all made me feel like perhaps I should contact you and see if there is any connections here! I have been trying to reconcile what my dad found years ago with what I've gotten so far - and we may have finally found something.

Re: Marion Arundell

Marianne,
I have copies of letters from 1977-1978 written by another one of my grandfather's first cousins who lived in Shelton, CT. Her name was Lilian S. Jones and she knew the history of all the Arundells who came from England including birth, death and marriage dates of most of them, who the children married and who their children were. The letters are incredible!
John Vickers Arundell (b.13 Dec 1849, d. March 1927) married Mary Royle (b.2 June 1852, d,1934) on July 17, 1870 in England. They had 12 children: Emily, Elizabeth, Frank Henry, Fred, Lily, Albert, plus 5 who died in infancy in England, and the last one, George, was born in NY after they immigrated. Albert died when he was 5 or 6. Of the remaining 6, Lillian Jones knew the info on all their spouses and children, except one, Fred, who I believe to be your great-grandfather. Lillian Jones' mother was Elizabeth, and my grandfather's father was Frank Henry. A passage from one of the letters reads:"Fred married and had a daughter and a son, but died quite young. Do not know anything about them so your information was great." (Apparently, my grandfather filled in some missing information about Fred to her in a previous letter). She goes on to say: "We have a Doc Petrie here, someday I'll ask him if [he's] related". That's what leads me to believe you are Fred Arundell's great-granddaughter, and your grandmother and my grandfather were cousins! My Aunt Marie Arundell James also recalls talk of an Aunt Marion when she was little in Queens, NY. I am 45 and live in Maryland. My family of Arundells all still live in NY. You can e-mail me at denswen718@aol.com and we can really research this stuff. Apparently most of the original Arundells are buried in Brooklyn in Greenlawn Cemetery. My aunt also has pictures of John Vickers and Mary Royle amd some of the children! NEAT! --Denise

I was very excited to receive your reply. Briefly, our GG Grandfather, John Vickers Arundell and his wife, Mary Royle had 12 children, 6 of whom died in infancy. They emigrtated from London in the 1880's with 5 children and the last one (12th) was born in Brooklyn NY in 1889. I have all their names, many birthdays and have the tree from John and Mary Arundell about 70% completed.
Hi,

I'm new to this as well and am also from England. I am trying to trace my Elston Line. My g.father was Daniel Albert Elston. He was born about 1880 in Birmingham area, England. His father, so I am led to believe, originated from Exeter, Devon, but we have no idea on his name. Haven't yet been able to get any certificates. Did Fred Jnr. have any children, and would he have moved to the Midlands? I am also told that my g.father spent some time in Canada connected with the railroad, either through work or just riding the rails, we don't know. I have a gut feeling that he emigrated to join family. I know he would have been back in England by at least 1920, or earlier, as that is when my uncle was born. I have been told that the marriage to my g.mother was his second, but I don't know if there were any children by his first wife. My aunt also told me that every year g.dad would go to Devon for two weeks, refusing to allow anyone else in the family to join him and that all she knew was that he visited a very large house. Whether this was a family visit or not, she is not sure.

Any help would be appreciated as my line appears to be something of a mystery.

Thanks

Sue
