Asbury Family in VA-Married Several Browns and Spilsby Daniel

The Asbury family in the Westmoreland Co., VA area married several descendants of George and Frances (Rowland) Brown. For example, a Frances Brown in that family married a Benjamin Asbury, and a Rebecca Brown in that family married a Joseph Asbury. Does anyone know how/if that Asbury family was related to the Sally Asbury/Asberry who married Spilsby Daniel in Wythe Co., VA in the 1780s? There seems to have been a common "Coleman family connection" between this Brown and this Daniel family, so I would not be too surprised if there was also a connection between all of the referenced members of the Asbury family. Thanks.

The Asbury families are so hard to pin down since so many of the used the same names passed down for years. I am looking for more information on my GGrandmother Jennie S Asbury born in Tn 1877 and her brother Randolph 1874 bn Tn and Daniel Turner Asbury 1880 or 1881 bn Missouri. Father was David Franklin Asbury and mother was Elizabeth Gibson and she died around 1884 and we can't locate them anywhere in the 1880 census but found them in the 1900 forward.

They were raised by an Uncle or cousin, but Jennie never talked about her family to her children so we really don't much about her prior to her marrying Robert Allen Pruitt in 1895 in Montague Texas.

Thank you so much for that information! John Ellis Asburry, Jr was my grandfather's full brother. I didn't know where he was burried, either. I just used that site you gave me (findagrave.com) to also find my twin grandmother's triplet bothers who were still born. They were Roy, Redmond, and Raymond Woolery and I requested a pic of their grave, too.

I am looking for death records, especially cemetery records, and any other information about two sisters who drank carbolic acid and died about 1915. My grandfather was Ira Elwood Asburry, Sr. and he told us about his two half-sisters, Anna Laura Asburry b1907 and Ora May Asburry b1906 who died when he was about 4 years old, which would have been about 1915. The Kentucky 1910 Census showed them living in Spencer, Montgomery Kentucky but I can't find anything about them after this. Their father was John Ellis Asburry, Sr. and I think their mother was Elizabeth Ross, their step-mother was Nannie Ellen Hanney, who was my grandfather's mother. Nannie Hanney also died in 1915 in Mt. Sterling/Montgomery Co., Kentucky of pulmonary tuberculosis and she was buried at the same cemetery as the girls, so I'm thinking the cemetery is near there? All it said on Nannie Hanney's death certificate for place of burial was Antioch Church yard. I also know that the girls graves were not marked but Nannie Hanney's should be. Any information about where I might find this Antioch Church cemetery in Kentucky would be appreciated.

If you look at the marriage record again, it says HE was born in VA and she was born in Boone, WV. She is Mrs. Ruby Morris. I did not see a record for Ruby Asbury to a Morris.

Ruby's father was in the Boone Co. census, 1860 through 1900. Ruby is in Boone Co. 1910 and 1920. I have to assume they were all born in Boone County.

Ardelia is the daughter of St Clair Miller and Louisa J Holstein. Louisa may have been born out of wedlock. The 1870 census shows her as Louisa Pool. Her mother, Mary Holstein was married to William Bradshaw and Charles Pool.

Roy's sister, Ruby, is in my line. Her husband, Robert Lee Forsyth (no "e" on the end) is my mother's brother.

According to WV marriage records, Ruby was born in Botetourt County, VA 29Aug1906, so logically, since Roy is older, he was born there, too. From somewhere (no documentation at all) I got Ruby's parents as Mandeville Asbury and Ardelia Miller. Ruby's marriage records (Whitesville, Boone County, 22Dec1928)show her as "Ruby Miller", a 23 year old widow. To date, I have found no other marriage record for her.

I hope some of this helps in your quest. I'd like to have any additional info you come up with to correct or add to my stuff.

Carl Asbury's book is no longer inm print. I am a DAR through George Asby who was present at the Kimg's Mountain battler. They wouldn'd accept Carl's book because he didn't reference his sources of information, and there is a copy of it in the DAR Libray HOWEVER, go into the Virginia Archives and kjey in Asbury and you will get to Dr. Holtsclaw information. He does give his sources and the DAR accepted them. If you have specifics I may be abe to help you. My Great Grandmoither Mary/Mollie Asbury married John Crouse of Tazewell, VA. I have this bunch back to kingdom come....George ASBURY/Asberry grand patriarch of this crew was at Kings Mountain. I have verified his line and became a DAR through him. He was verified as a Patriot many years before by 2 ladies who decended via the female line...ie;
Daughter/grand daughter...etc. I verified the male line. Mom/gradfather/great grandmother and back through Thomas and Livicy, his father etc back to George. You have referenced Dr. Holtzclaw, He referenced his sources and is accepted by the DAR. The more recent book by ... gosh can remember his name....was a good book but the sources were not recognized. He used Dr. H. So if I can be of help to you just give a holler..... BTW. I have a photo of Thomas thanks to another cousin now deceased Jessie Hankins Mitchell.

Harvey and Betsy lived on the left fork of the Little Lynn Creek where they
owned the entire fork as well as most if not all of present day East Lynn.
Many of his descendants live on this land today and almost all of the
and he owned is still owned by them.
As mentioned in Hardesty and in " A History of the East Lynn Community "
by Lucian Osburn Harvey in addition to operating a large farm was a
merchant in the East Lynn area.
This occupation has been followed by many of his descendants including
J.C. Adkins & Eileen "Peach" Adkins Asbury who along with her husband
George Asbury own a large super market in the town of Wayne.

After Betsy's death, Harvey's second marriage, and his death their large land holdings caused much dissension between the two sets of children.
After his last six children were born Harvey gave land to each of them as well
as to his oldest son of the first marriage leaving out the other first marriage children.
After his death, his daughter Hester Ann sued on their behalf and in 1899 and 1900 they were each declared heirs and were given a 1/17th share.
These records are in Wayne County Deed book 51 page 5 dated 1899 and deed book 53 pages 379-382 dated 1900. Angeline, Eliza, Albert, and Betsy sold her share to W.S. Napier 22 September 1902.

Harvey served in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. He was a Sergeant in the 6th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry led by Col. Milton Jameson Ferguson. This regiment was in numerous battles in the area and was distinguished in combat.

Eli and Amanda were mentioned in their Grandfather's (Jeremiah Claypool) will in 1846.
I had thought the same as everyone else that Margret had died in 1836 and that James
had remarried in 1837, until I got the obit, and some census and Civil War records, which
all has Eli's birth as October 24,1837.

Eli Clinton Asbury was born Oct. 24, 1837 and departed this life Tuesday, May 28, 1912,
at 3:30 p.m.,at his home on Stoney Ridge, three miles southeast of Cedar Bluff.
He was in his 76th year, the son of James Asbury and Marguerite Claypool Asbury, she
being a daughter of Jerry Claypool, father of the late Miles Claypool of Burkes Garden
Mrs Elizabeth McGuire of Cedar Bluff, Mrs Asbury being a half sister to the two later.
He was married to Miss Mary Stephenson the 9th of June, 1860.
To this union was born eight children,six daughters and two sons, six of whom is living.
Mr. Asbury wasa Confederate soldier, belonged to the 29th Infantry, Pickitt's Division,
was of the second volunteers, and served throughout the war-was sick a great deal of
the time. He had fever the year before the war, which left him with a cough which lasted
through the remainder of his life; the immediate cause of his death was dropsy.
He had been confined to his bed since before Christmas Being a man of pious parents,
he naturally followed in their steps. A more honest, truthful and kind man, could perhaps
not have been found.He was fully prepared to make"The Crossing".into the Great Beyound,
and lay a considerable part of his time with the old cherished Bible under his pillow.
His passing was peaceful and quite.
Services were conducted by the writer at his home, from the 14th Chapter of St. John,
n the presence of a large number of relatives, neighbors and friends, after which his
body was laid to rest in the cementery nearby, beside his daughter, Miss Eva, who
had preceded him several years. May his faithful and beloved wife and children and
friends meet him in Heaven.

Charles Wesley (William?) Asbury is not my direct line. I do not have any pictures of him.
The only picture I have is of Ransom (his brother) and his family. In the picture, behind the family
you can see two hands, this is suppose to be John Asbury (father of Ransom) and
William Vickery (father of Martha Bell) shaking hands.

Ransom Alexander Asberry (Asbury) married Martha Bell Vickery. I believe that Martha Bell
was a sister to Mary Jane Vickery who married Morris Asberry.
Ransom and Martha Bell had 4 children, William Morris (Bill), Nancy Ellen (Helen), John Oliver
and Sara Jane. Ransom moved his family from Wayne County Kentucky to Knoxville Tennessee between 1900 and 1920. John Oliver was my father-in-law, he was born in 1899 in
Wayne County Kentucky.

Charles W was my gr.grandfather.His son Elza was my grandfather,he married Lotaine Duvall,this

According to Sherrie Asbury.C.Ws parents may have been John&Malissa.
This brings up the question of the middle name and there being two Williams.
I don't know about Ann Duvall.

1920 Census Clinton County Kentucky, Charles W. was living in the house with Elza,
it list him as Charley. It also shows that he gave his fathers (John) place of birth as Tennessee. All the census I have seen on John have given his place of birth as Kentucky, except for one and now this one.

He was married to Catherine (Cathy) Bertran 1851-1918. It list the children as Jonathan 1871-1929 (married Mahala Cordelia Guinn 1869-1951),
Morris 1875-1910 (first married Mary Jane Victory 1874-1905, second married Ann Guinn, Elza 1879-1954 (first married Lotana Duvall 1879-1909, second married Betty Ann Crouch 1875-1944),
Joel F. born 1877 (married Ann Duvall),
Lee Alexander, Shelby 1881-1940 (married Laura Asberry 1888-1957),
George born 1884 (married Sarah Wooten born 1884), Lewis Frank (known as Big) born 1888,
and a baby girl who died very young.
'Asburys in America' probably has mistakes, but it is a great reference for research.
I do know that Charles Wesley or William father is John Asbury and his mothers name was
Malissa J. this I confirmed by searching the Census.
A little note of interest, my husbands grandfather was a brother to Charles William or Wesley, it
took me about two years to find out anything about my husbands ancesters.
The only thing we had to go by was his Aunt's bible. The bible listed him as Alex Asbury, my father-in-law John Oliver Asbury had his fathers name as Morris Asbury on his Social Security Application (my father-in-law could not read or write, and he was very young when his Dad died)
It was only after ordering the Social-Security Applications of his Aunt Helen (who's name was
Nancy Ellen but was listed as Helen on the SSA and was always known as Helen) and his
Uncle William Morris Asberry that we found out that the fathers name was
Ransom Alexander Asberry. Also, interesting to find out that Helen and William still had
the Asberry spelling and their brother John's was Asbury.
When searching there are many different things to take into account to determine if the information is right or not.

As far as I can tell the middle name for Charles W. ASBERRY has not yet been proved.
It more likely was Wesley because he had a brother whose first name was William.
He had several sons, but not one named Lee Alexander!
That son's name was Joel Leander ASBERRY. The Leander could be made to sound something

The 1930 Fentress County Tennessee Census has Charles W. living in the house of
George and Laura Asbury (George 2nd wife). Shows his age age 79 and shows he is widowed.
They are living on the unimproved dirt road from Alhardt to ? Stockton.
One census is dated April 2nd, the other is dated April 19th, maybe we should consider that
he lived at both places.

It is not that unusual that Charles was enumerated in two households in 1930. It happened fairly often in all the census years. I think it just means that he lived part of the census year with one family and the other part of the year with the other. If George and Laura ASBERRY were who I think they were my husband remembers them from his boyhood in Fentress Co., TN, and Catherine had lived with them before her death as well. Both Catherine and Charles are buried in the Allardt Cemetery in Fentress Co., TN. This place of burial now makes sense to me.

This is according to my father whom is still alive.
According to him, George married twice, 1st to Bertha Pyle to which they had one child,
Haskell Asberry (my grandfather). Bertha passed away and George married Laura Stinson
(no children).
Haskell, who was my father's father and whom married Nona Mae(y) Holbert, had the following
children, Jerry Thomas (my father), Ralph, Helen, Shirley, and Glen.
I also have some info on some of the other children/descendants of C.W. and Catherine.
Charles W. is buried in the Allardt Cemetary in Allardt, TN, just about two miles from my house.

I believe that I had already stated in the original post that the information was from
"Asburys in America" written by Carl Asbury.
The book has the informer as George Frank Asberry, son of Morris Asberry.
The book has George Asberry married to Sarah Wooten.
My files shows him married 1st to Sarah Wooten and 2nd to Laura Stinson.
I show that he and Sarah Wooten had a daughter named Elizabeth.
My line comes from Charles W. Asberry's brother Ransom Alexander Asberry, so I have not done anything to prove any of the information on Charles W. Asberry.

I have spoken with Carolyn Dumboff and Harold Asberry about this and thought I should share it.
I spoke to the oldest living Asberry from this area (Jamestown, TN).
Her name is Nora (Asberry) Brannon, she was one of Lee Stanford's children,
Lee Stanford was one of Jonathan's children.
Jonathan, of course, was one of Rev. C.W. and Catherine's children.
Nora and her husband (Kenny) are both 81 years old and in "good mind",
what I mean is they're not "crazy", so I must assume that they are correct.
Nora said that she wasn't 100% sure, but thought that the "W" in C.W. stood
for "Washington". Her husband spoke right up and said that's exactly what is
was, Washington.
I know this is different that what has been posted here (eg. William, Westley), but both
Nora and Kenny were convinced that is was "Washington".
I do have more info if anyone is interested.

John Asbury (Asbery, Asberry) was born around 1826 and was married to Malissa J. Unknown
who was born around 1828. 1850, 1860, 1870 they were in Wayne County Kentucky,
1880 they were in Clinton County. 1900 Census shows John again in Wayne County, living in the
house with him is his daughter Leona (who was deaf) and grandson Oliver Walden.
Living next door to him was his son Ransom Alexander Asbury and his family, (my husbands grandfather). 1910 Wayne County shows Leona, living with her nephew Oliver and his family, so
I must assume that John died between 1900-1910. Malissa J. does not appear in the 1880 Clinton County Census with John and the children, so I must assume that she died between 1870-1880.
The information I have, list John and Malissa J. with the following children
Rev.Charles Wesley, William C., Jeduthan, Nancy E., Leona B., Clarinda, Elija, Mary S.,
Ransom Alexander, and William.
I have no idea why there are two Williams. The information came from the Census and Carl Asbury's book 'Asburys in America'. Carl's book shows a chart of this family but it is not known how they are related to the other Asbury's in the book. The information in the book was from George Frank Asbury, grandson of Charles Wesley.
On the chart John (1826)is the oldest generation in this family.

According to my records John and Malissa had four daughters. Leona (Lean ?) never married.
She is continously in the household with her father with the exception of 1910 when she is living
with Oliver and is listed as his Aunt. 1900 has Oliver Walden living with John and it list him as a grandson. The other daughters were Nancy E., Clarinda, and Mary S.,
I do not have any information on any of them, but one of them must have been married to a Walden.
Ransom was only married to Martha Bell Vickery.
They had one other child, Sarah Jane, who was suppose to have died at the age of 5.
I believe that Martha Bell Vickery was a sister to Mary Jane Vickery, who was the first wife
of Morris Asberry ( son of Charles W. Asberry)
After reading your post again, you are either working on two different families and have confused
the two families or you have linked John Asberry (1824) which is something I have not been able

My grandfather was Clinton Jess Asbury, father of Harold Asbury, so I have very close Asbury ties. My knowledge becomes "muddy" past James Asbury (ggggrandfather b. abt 1806). My line is the Tazewell County, Richlands, Claypool Hill, Virginia branch and I was actually born and raised in that area.
I enter all I can find about the tree, but will not mark it as researched until I can actually find my own documentation or proof of another's documentation. I have found this line of the Asbury family so muddled with other researcher's information, who do not document. Now that I have become more knowledgable, I realize that I need to document sources more completely. I would be very interested in any infomation you might add. Thank you so much for responding.

Sure I could use the information for my Asbury family file if you want it included on him...if you don't mind sharing it with me..
I do have lots of information on most of these families and try to help those that I can when possible...
Is Harold from the Virginia or West Virginia or one of the other states???
I do like to try repair the old neglected ones with cracks in the pictures for someone else when its possible to find them...
