Hi Paul
my name is Jeff,
Before my grandfather died, he mentioned our family name used to be spelled Ash without an "e", he also said our family name had been Dufresne, no-one really knew, was really sketchy. My dad, Henry J Ashe jr. had told me once he used to go on vacation at his grandparents farm in Shediac, N.B.
I had looked up where my uncle lives now, and above it, I had found a posting of a William Ash (Dufresne) geanology. All my family is listed down to me, some dates and spellings are a little off but it is definitely us. In there is mention that he moved to Vermont and was married to Lucy St. Ceyer. I don't see that he moved to ny but his origin seems cloudy, wonder if the william you mention is the same one in my family? Hope this helps Even if your still looking. Your original post was quite a few yrs ago. Jashe2012@aol.com

This is so exciting, Alice Wooward Brown who attended the Ash reunion was my gr. grandmother. Her sister also attended Elizabeth Ash Woodward. Elizabeth lived in Chester at the time and Alice lived in Phildadelphia. It is amazing to know where they were on those summer days and what they were doing with the family. Alice was the mother of seven daughters the last of which Laura Brown Smith just passed away in 2011. Her daughter Dorothy Brown Le Maitre was my grandmother.

ASH FAMILY

My wife is descended from the ASH family. John and Susan Ash (nee Hannaford), had 12 children. John was born in 1827 in Lezant, Cornwall and Susan Hannaford was born in Widecombe in the Moor, Devon. After their marriage in 1853 they lived in North Hill, Cornwall and all their 12 children were born in the area.

The whole family moved to the north east in the 1870's. Their children were John Richard Ash, Elizabeth Ann Ash, William Henry Ash, Enos Hannaford Ash, George Hannaford Ash (my wife's Gt. Grandfather), Jonathon Hannaford Ash, Robert Hannaford Ash, Ann Beard Ash, James Hannaford Ash, Samuel Albert Ash, Moses Ash and Alma Ash.

As we are having very little luck in tracing any of this family, we would dearly love to hear from anyone who may be descended from this family.

Regards,

Steve & Gill Jones

I am looking for someone who may know more information on Daniel Ash b. 1775 in South Carolina and d. 1821 in Virginia. He married Susan Pridemore. What I do not understand is the story that some have that states Daniel came from Georgia or South Carolina and Roy Ash, one of Daniel's descendants has a letter from his grandfather that says Daniel had to change his name coming to the US due to some trouble in his homeland. How can he be from Georgia or South Carolina if his homeland is Ireland? Also I would like to find any information about his supposed name change from Pressmore or Pridemore to Ash and information on his father. If anyone could help I would greatly be thankful.

thank you,
please email me at laura20041988@yahoo.com and put Daniel Ash as the subject.

Laura Holtmeier

Daniel Ash and Sarah Bridge/Lena Ash: Vermont

I am looking for information on the wives of Daniel Ash, born 1828 Quebec and died 1916 Vermont. First one is Sarah Bridge born around 1844. I would like to know information on her and her parents and death. I would also like to know information on Lena Ash. I don't know her surname or birthdate but she died February 17, 1917. I would like to know information on her as well. Daniel and Sarah had a daughter Josephine Ash who married John Jerome. I was also wondering if Daniel and Sarah/Lena had other kids. My email is tylerclawrence72@gmail.com. Thank you!

Re: Ash - Lumpkin Co., GA 1800 - 1920

Jane Almyria is the 10 year old Jane listed in this census. She married in 1859 to Henry Etris.

The three people listed at the end of the 1860 Census for the William Ash family are actually Henry Etris, Jane Ash Etris, and their 3 month old daughter Elmira Mae Etris.
The Henry listed in the 1860 census is too young to be William Ash's son Henry not to mention the fact that you can find Henry Ash out in his own household with kids in 1860. There is no James aged 10 years old in William's household in the 1850 census but Jane is there as a 10 year old and so this is Jane not James. They have her gender recorded incorrectly as well as lumping all of these people together under the last name Ash. The baby does not even have a name which leads this researcher to believe that the information on this family came from neighbors who were not quite clear on the relationships of the people, the age of the baby, or even the name of the baby. Therefore it does not surprise me that the gender of Jane may have been mistakenly listed as a male. Also, there is a conflict with the 16 year old's gender. In the 1850 census the 6 year old is a male and in the 1860 census the 16 year old is a female. This person is listed as Jackson in the 1850 census and Adaline J in the 1860 census. Perhaps the gender confusion arises from this situation. Jane's middle name is Almyria and I believe that the son's first name is Andrew but he went by Jack or Jackson. Perhaps the person the census taker spoke with got the names and the kids and their ages and genders mixed up. I firmly believe that Adaline J is Jackson the youngest son of William. James is Jane Almyria the 20ish year old daughter of William, who by this time had married Henry Etris. I also believe that the Henry on the 1860 census record is actually Henry Etris based on the age recorded and the fact that Henry Etris cannot be located on any other census record in 1860. I also believe that the infant is Elmira Mae Etris, age 3 months.
Attached to this post you will find my evidence. The marriage license for Henry Etris and Jane Ash can be found in the Lumpkin County Marriages Book B (1847-1863) page 210

They did spell her middle name with an A on the license but most of the records I can find spell it with an E. She spelled her daughter's name with an E. (Actually she did not spell it any way at all. From all the records I can find as well as some family stories handed down through the Seabolt line and the fact that she could not sign her name to her claim for Henry's back pay after his death in the Civil War, lead me to believe that Jane was illiterate.)

After Henry dies in Fairground Hospital during the Civil War Jane married Henry Elkaney Seabolt. His wife Fannie Ash Seabolt died leaving him with a little brood of kids to raise and Jane was a widow with a child so they married and raised his, hers, and theirs together until she died in 1890 in Etowah County, Albama. After Jane's death Kaney lived with their daughter Ellen and with his son Elkaney Jr. and I lose track of him after the 1910 census. Some say he is buried beside Jane in Black Creek Cemetery but I am not totally convinced of that and until I find some evidence that he was actually placed in the ground there I am not taking it at face value that he is buried there.

Henry Etris, on the other hand, is buried in Georgia and I have attached a photo of his gravestone as well as a picture of Jane's stone.

One of my next projects is to figure out if Fannie E. Ash is actually Francis Ash that is one of Jane's siblings or if she is a cousin. Age is going to be the determining factor here unless I can find some other type of solid evidence about Fannie's parentage.

Re: Ash families of Nelson Kentucky

Thanks Ryan.
Has it been confirmed now, that the Ash family who were early settlers in Kentucky, had a wife killed and children kidnapped by Indians were an Esch/Ash family originally from Germany?
I have seen earlier reports that they came from North Carolina, or Virginia or that they were possibly Welsh.
Does anyone know if the area that a Fed census was taken can be determined ? The reason I ask this is that in the 1840 census for Nelson Kentucky (no other details of the area given) , the Robert Ash I mention in my post above is next to a John Combs. (Nimrod Shumate who I believe is the father in law of Robert Ash is listed further down on the same page.)
George (Indian) Ash married a Hannah Combs.
In the 1814 tax lists for Nelson Kentucky a John Combs is listed owning 100 acres of land at Jacks creek. Jacks creek I believe was named after one of the John (Jack) Ashs' and was the western fork of Ash's creek which was named after John Ash Snr.
If I could determine that The John Combs listed in the 1840 census for Nelson Kentucky was still living at Jacks creek, that would mean that Robert Ash is living in the same area this Ash family settled. That would make it more likely that he was connected with this family.
Phil
Ash families of Nelson Kentucky

I have been searching for ancestors of my 2nd Great Grandfather, Robert Ash, born Kentucky USA about 1808. He married Matilda Shumate in Nelson Kentucky on 1 June 1835.
He is listed in the 1850 Fed Census at district 1 Nelson Kentucky, but can I find no trace of him after this census, although his wife Matilda is in every census up to 1880 in Nelson Ky. She never remarries.
I have recently noticed a family tree which has my 2nd Great Grandfather,Robert Ash and his ancestors. This tree has him connected to the family of the John Ash who were captured by indians.
This tree lists his ancestors as follows, beginning with his father and working backwards.

Peter Ash born 1783-?, married Elizabeth Stump born 1790 Virginia
John Ash born 1763 Maryland, died 1783 Nelson Ky., married Elizabeth ?, born about 1765
John J Ash (Esch) born 1745 Nassau, Bayem, Germany, died 1799 Kentucky USA, married Sabre Milhughs, born 1748 Virginia, died 1782 Kentucky.
Johannes Heinrich Esch, born 1703 Germany, died 1782 Germany, married Anna Maria Kroh born 1707 Germany, died 1751 Germany.

This seems to be at odds with information I have seen on this family in the past.
A second cousin of mine in the USA (I am Australian) sent me newspaper clippings about the Ash family of Kentucky who were captured by Indians. She believes we are connected to this family.
I have contacted the person with this tree and they said they would get back to me when it was all properly documented.
I would like comments about this new information from anyone who has any information on this Ash family. Thanks.
Phil

I am researching Alice Maime Woodburn Ash Stevenson and would like to know if it is possible she was James Berton Ash's first wife - marriage date of 1/14/1906? If anyone could confirm or deny, I'd appreciate all your help.
~ Michaela Donahue
