John Ashby Sr. of Preston Co., VA (WV)

John Coleman Ashby Sr. of Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV

I wish to connect with any family members that decend from John Ashby Sr. Below is posted what notations and research areas that I have been able to put together. Hopefully we could compare family legend and find out who John's father was and how our line connects to the Ashby's of Virginia.

Thank you!

The following is a compilation of handwritten notes by Mildred Lora (Shay) Ashby of Preston Co., WV (granddaughter), and Eveyln (Ashby) Samples of Washington, PA (great granddaughter). This includes notes made from experience, memories, and family legend.

Sally Ashby was born around 1810 - 1820 in Preston Co., W V. The family story says that Sally, an unmarried woman, went to find work in Pittsburg, PA. around 1833-1835, when she returned to Preston Co. she had a baby with her. It was told that Sally had adopted the boy , whom she names John Coleman Ashby, while in the Pittsburg area.

The family legend also states that the baby was in fact Sally's child by a man named John Vonnie (Varney, Vonney or Evoney) from the Preston Co., WV area. If so, these two young people were never wed. There are listing for this surname in Preston Co. WV during this era and later into the century. The Vonnie surname of Preston Co., WV was of Welsh decent. No specific record has yet been found that links the two families of Ashby and Vonnie. The Vonnie/Varney line appears mostly in Woods Co., WV.

A second family story that comes through the French Ashby line, the child of John Ashby Sr. and Maria Bolyard, is that Vonnie was married to an indian woman who died in or soon after child birth with John Sr. The father needing to find work relocated - "went west" - and left the new born with Sally Ashby as an adopted son.

The third family legend is that John's father was of Welsh decent. There is the surname of Welsh during the early 1800's in Preston County, WV and deserves more research.

Sally Ashby appears to be the daughter of Captain Nathan Ashby of Terra Alta, WV. Nathan kept one of earliest taverns along state road from Westernport to
Morgantown. Tavern was located on Snowy Creek, then structure became Hopemont Sanitarium. He served from Virginia as an officer in War of 1812 and in 1813 Promoted from Captain to Major. Nathan was the son of Wm. Wilton Ashby and Sarah Williams of Garrett Co., MD.

In the 1840 census, Preston Co., VA, Nathan Ashby (75) is listed as living with Elijah Hardesty (50-60), male under 5, and female 50-60. Nathan is also listed as an ex-serviceman military. (I found found no notings yet that Elizabeth Ashby Hardesty and Elijah Hardesty had any children ... is it possible that the male child under 5 (born c. 1830-1835) could be John Coleman Ashby?)

Sally's son, John Coleman Ashby Sr. (referred to hereafter as John Sr.) is shown as marrying three times with children by all three wives. By family notes it looks as though every wife has a first name of Maria or Mariah. The first wife appears as Maira Bowman , the second as Maria (Bolyard) Phillips, and the third as Maria Bowwer. There is a notation for the third wife also as Maria Evans...this may imply that the third wife was a widow and may have been Maria (Bowwer) Evans or Maria (Evans) Bowwer.

John Sr. and his first wife, Maria Bowman, had the following children: George, Rars, Julia, Joseph, and William. They would have been born in the Preston Co., WV area between 1850 and 1862.

John Sr. and his second wife are married in her father's home, that of Nicholas Bolyard. Maria (Bolyard) Phillips is the recent widow of (?) Phillips. During the 1870 census of Preston Co., WV. her children by Mr. Phillips are shown as living in the home of John Sr. They are Eugenus (called Jean), Benjamin, Mary, and Sarah.

The children born to John Sr. and Maria (Bolyard) Phillips are Albert, John Coleman Jr., Ella, Calvin, French, Emma , Robert, and Alma. They were born between 1862 and 1879 Est. according to the census of 1880. This would place John Sr. first wife's death between 1860 -1862, and his second marriage beginning around 1861- 1862. This second wife would have died around 1879 and therefore his third marriage after 1879. Family lore says that the last two children of his second marriage (Robert and Alma) were adopted by a family named Gibson in the Preston Co., WV area because their mother died in childbirth.

Please note that John Coleman Ashby Jr. (referred to as John Jr. hereafter) will appear in this compilation again.

John Sr.'s third wife, Mary Bowwer appears after 1879-1880, their child is notes as being Sandford Ashby.

George Ashby, who appears to be the son of Captain Nathan Ashby and Lottie Sedman, also married three times. His first wife is noted as a Payne and their children are Herman and a daughter that married Ben Shuttlesworth. The second wife was a Hardy and their children are Adea and Dora. The genealogy notes found on the internet show George, son of Nathan, as marrying Asa Wilson. However, Asa is a man's name for this time period so this is most likely a mistake in recording.

George married a third time to Sarah (Royce) Conn, daughter of Benjamin Royce and Hannah (Heilman) Royce. She was a recent widow.

George and Sarah's children are Mary, Linnie (who is Hannah Margaret), Weaver, George L., Alfred, and Edith. Linnie will appear again.

From the notations left to the family, John Sr.'s son by his second marriage, John Jr., married the daughter of George Ashby. Hannah Margaret (Linnie) Ashby married John Coleman Ashby Jr. in 1895. Linnie's birth date on the marriage certificate shows that she is 19 years old but family legend says that she was 14 years only. John Jr.s dates on the license may also be false. John Coleman Ashby Sr. had to sign the marriage certificate to give his approval for them to be married.

So:
1. Sally Ashby was probably an unwed mother that went out of the Preston County area to have the baby fathered by a Mr. Vonney...this would have hidden the pregnancy from the people in the area. The baby's father did not marry her, circa 1835 for birth of John Sr. In my opinion, Pittsburg would have been to great a distance for a young woman of barely 20 years old to travel and no family connections have been found in the Pittsburg, PA area where she would have found "safe haven". There are no birth records for John Sr. in Pittsburg.

2. John Coleman Ashby Sr. may have had as many as 14 child ren and have helped to raise his second wife's 4 children by her first marriage...total of 18 children that may connect to his name, circa 1855-1885 for children.

3. George Ashby (Linnie's, wife of John Jr's, father) and Sarah Ashby (mother of John Sr.) appear to be siblings of Captain Nathan Ashby of Preston Co., WV. This would have made John Ashby Jr. and Linnie Ashby first cousins - once removed and may explain the signing of the marriage certificate by John Sr.

4. Linnie (Hannah Margaret) was probably pregnant when she married John Jr. This would explain why the family allowed these two young people to marry and why she may have lied on the marriage certificate as to her birth date. circa 1895 for marriage

5. John Coleman Ashby Sr. would have been both the groom's and the bride's grandfather.

Documentation problems:
1. Sally is a nickname during the era that the woman would have been born. Most likely her given name was Sarah.
Sarah is an extremely common name all through the 1800's often in the combination Sarah Elizabeth. If so, if Sally's
name was Sarah Elizabeth Ashby the search needs to follow Sarah, Sarah Elizabeth, Elizabeth, and Sally: looking for a
woman that has a son that does not belong to her eventual first husband.

2. John Coleman Ashby Sr. and John Coleman Ashby Jr. both went by the name John Ashby, again a very common name during their eras and in what was then the state of Virginia.

3. The Preston Co. courthouse was burned by arson in 1865. .. of course, destroying the very documents that could prove or disprove this information or provide more leads. This would include the birth records for Sally Ashby and George Ashby . However, there may be a record of John Sr. birth in t he Pittsburg, PA area that have not been found.

4. John Sr.'s wives are all Marias and the second two are widows...so the records will need to be searched for quite a few combinations of possible names.

5. The censuses of Preston Co. shows Maria (Bolyard) Phillips children listed under the name of John Ashby Sr. home and can be confused as being his and her children, not just hers.

6. Linnie Ashby, the wife of John Jr. is usually listed in family notes as Linnie, not as her given name of Hannah Margarate. After her marriage she becomes Hannah Margarate (Linnie - Nickname) (Ashby) Ashby.

7. According to the census records both John Sr. and John Jr. were Renter not land owners so there are no deeds or court records to trace.

8. To date there is no known wills by any of the four men, Captain Nathan Ashby, John Sr., George, or John Jr.

9. Sally Ashby may have married after John C.'s birth. Need to search the documents for a Sally Ashby that has a child that does not match the marriage dates for her husband.

10. Coleman is a surname in the area and often the first male child carried the surname of a grandparent. Need to search the Preston County records for the surname Coleman.

11. Nathan Ashby has two sons by the name of George, the first dying in 1784 as an infant. The second is born in1813 and listed as marrying Asa Wilson (a man's name ?).

Clarification of the 4 Ashby lines

It is my understanding there are 4 Ashby lines, represented by Capt. Robert, Capt. Stephen, Daniel, and an obscure Ashby that migrated to Pa. of which little is known. Are these men all sons on Thomas Ashby that died abt 1752 in Frederick Co. Va.? If this is the case we all (Ashbys) had a common ancestor about 250 years ago.

The reason I ask is my Y-12 DNA matched up w/ a Berry that has a paper trail back to a Ruben Berry that was raised by Capt Stephen Ashby, son of said Thomas Ashby. Also, matched with a Robert J. Ashby of Ca. His family migrated from England to Canada to California. What about the SC Ashby's, are they out of the same Thomas Ashby?

I am currently being upgraded to Y 59. However, the DNA component appears to create more questions than answers. Just my humble opinion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a Newbie and do not understand all I know about genealogy, DNA etc.

Ernie Ashby
eashby@sc.rr.com
ernroe@yahoo.com

Very new to this ancestry search. Forgive me in advance if I do it wrong. I'm doing research on my mother's parents. John N. Ashby married to Jessie Jimmerson. They had three children, Bobbie Sue Ashby, Gladys Ashby and John Ashby. My mother (passed in 1990) never spoke of relatives and we just assumed there were none. Just a short visit so far on this website and I am finding out we may have quite a few. Any info would be great. Thank you.
Dianne

I was in touch with her about 10 yrs ago when she sent me some of her files, but have noticed that she hasn't updated any of her data since 2001. I am working on my ancestry and have quite a bit of information but some of the Ashby lines get very confusing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Y-DNA, a GPS for modern day genealogy, why not us it?

A few years ago when I began the very interesting but arduous journey to discover my Ashby ancestors my knowledge only went back to my grandfather. I did not have a paper trail, just several oral histories that conflicted w/ each other. Like most people on here I began looking at records and talking to other researchers and looking at other family trees. Having a medical background I took the approach,if it is not documented it didn't happen, that makes the task harder but much more accurate. In 2006 I attended a genealogy conference that focused on Y-DNA and haw it could be used to track male lineage. Well, I thought that was the tool we needed to advance male genealogy research. It would place an Ashby male in the right blood line, it would confirm paper trails, and it would show any divisions in the Ashby lines. In short order it would let you know your position and point you in the right direction. However, for it to work effectively, Y-DNA requires an adequate database. At last count there 17 Ashby males with recorded info. on FTDNA. That is not nearly enough when you have 22,000 Ashbys in this country. If we want to take advantage of YDNA a larger database must be created. So, I ask everybody that knows of an male with the Ashby surname to contact him and ask that he submit a YDNA sample to one of the testing labs. I would suggest you refer him to www.FTDNA.com they have an Ashby surname project in place. Plus, it explains how it works and their privacy policy etc. Until we have a much larger database of Ashby YDNA this valuable tool will remain ineffective. It is like having a GPS system in your car and only one satellite in orbit. It is up to us, Ashby researchers, to make it work as it should. Again, please make an effort to encourage any Ashby male you know to submit a YDNA sample.
Ernie Ashby
eashby@sc.rr.com
ernroe@yahoo.com

JOHN ASHBY
I am searching for information on the above, my great great grandfather. John lived in Grafton, West Virginia, where he was adopted and took the last name Ashby. He was adopted by the Ashby family along with Vonnie (Lennie) Ashby. The two were not born blood siblings. I know they married in the early 1910s and bore my great grandmother Helen Ashby (Moran). I am not sure of John's birth or death dates, of his parents, or much about his life. I am interested in finding information possibly on his birth last name if it is available. If there is any information that is available, please contact me.

Thank you.

Searching for BALLESTRINI, MORAN, ASHBY

The name Garner is so unusual that I feel certain Garner 2 is either named after Garner 1 or that they both got their name from a Garner ancester. Garner 1's mother was a Randolph, but I haven't been able to find a first name or anything about her family. Garner 2's father is Jesse Ashby and I have names of lots of brothers and sisters, aunts, ucles, grand parents, etc, but have been unable to find a Garner or the relationship to Garner 1. Please help me. This is driving me crazy.

Margaret/Mary Ashby b. abt. 1852 ?

On one son's death certificate she is Margaret Ashby, b. Va.. On the other son's death certificate she is Mary Ashby, no state. I believe I found her and her 2 young sons living with sister L. Thompson in the 1880 census for Coddle Creek, Iredell N.C. However on the census ( if this is her and I'm 90% sure that it is )N.C. is the place of birth for herself and her 2 sons, but I know that James V.Campbell was born in S.C. and the other, Willianm E. Campbell was born in Ross Co., OH. This Ashby woman married a campbell man and I believe his name was E. Thompson Campbell. I have hit a brickwall and now hope that someone has an Ashby ancestor with a Margaret/Mary Ashby for a sister.
Thanks,
Eileen

I have heard, that there were 4 distinct Ashby lines that came to America and that most Ashby's ancestors are from the four (4) lines. If this is correct, have they been differentiated through YDNA? I have had my YDNA measured to the 67th marker and no exact matches except w/ people of different surnames (YDNA12) only. I have documented ancestors in Sullivan Co. Tn, Guilford Co. NC, Forsyth Co. NC,Durham, NC, Nansemond Co. Va, Norfolk, Va, and possibly in Jefferson Co Tn, and Stokes Co.NC. I now live in SC and don't appear to have any connection to the native SC Ashby's If anyone has information related to the above please respond to this post or e mail me privately at:
eashby@sc.rr.com or ernroe @yahoo.com.

Thanking you in Advance.

Ernie Ashby

P.S. My maternal great grandmother was Nannie Pike Ashby , b. abt 1870,from Sullivan Co. Tn. She had a brother named Henry Pike.

I'm trying to sort out a possible name change. In the 1850 census listed are Robert Ash and Matilda Ash both 42, of Nelson county. Children are E.Ash f 16, C.Ash f 14, Malisea Ash f 10, George Ash m 6. This George Ash(George Washington Ash) was my G/Grandfather.
I can't find any trace of Robert Ash before this.
On some trees I've noticed that Matilda Shumate(Schumate) married Robert Ashby on others Robert Ash. Are they the same people??
There are some suggestions that Robert Ashby was a cousin of Matilda Shumate , and changed the last name when married.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ashby Manor at Quenby

I'm haveing a bit of trouble locating and finding any information about the Ashby Manor that was usually refered to sa the "manor at Quenby" or "Quenby Manor". So far all the ones I have found that were possibilities have turned up to be no go's. The Quenby Hall and Ashby Folville Manor's are not old enough, nor is the Ashby Castle. I don't know if maybe there was a name change somewhere down the line. The one that I am looking for would date somewhere at least the early 1300's or possibly the late 1200's. This is the info that I have:

"William purchased a messuage, 4 virgates of land (120 acres) and 5 shillings, six pence rent in Quenby from John and Matilda de Wilughby who was the heiress of a family calling itself "de Quenby" and had recieved that land as a dowry. Between 1327 and 1332 William de Ashby acquired the manor of Quenby. By 1338 the manor made up about 450 acres."

The William mentioned her is a William De Ashby, born 1300, Melton Mowbray, Leicester England. He is decendant of Sassfrid supposedly, and is the father of a Thomas Ashby who Married Alice. This William was married to a Margaret Wolsencote. Anyway if anyone has anymore information please help. Thank you greatly.

Dan

James Abel Ashby born abt 1750 in Virginia?, served in the Rev.War. James was granted 200 acres of Bounty Land by the Executive of Virginia. He had one son Abel and one daughter Mary both born in Virginia. Mary married Henry Noland in Virginia and they moved to Jefferson County Ohio with Abel Ashby after 1791.

Is it possible that James Abel Ashby is the son of Thomas Ashby of Fort Ashby who died around 1752. Thomas had four sons of whom it is know that one migrated west. Could that one that migrated be James Abel Ashby?

Thanks for any help!
Sharon

Charlotte Louisa Badger Ashby Stevenson, was born 27 Jul 1853 to Rodney Badger and Nancy Garr in Salt Lake City. The Family History of William Harding Ashby, by Robert L. Ashby indicates her name to Be “Charlotta” on page 30 and page 85. Her headstone in Holden, UT, reads “Charlotte”.

Does anyone have a firm explanation for this discrepancy?

R. Badger
I am trying to trace any relations of Edwin James Ashby-Hayter. He was born approx 1878 supposedly in Sunderland where his family came from. He died 1/5/1930. He married Selina Jewell from Bristol in 1901 and had 4 children, Selina, Edwin (Ted) Lilian Florence (known as Flo) and Frederick who died aged 11 or 13.
The name Ashby- Hayter was conjoined at some stage in the past but I am not sure exactly what he called himself ie Edwin Ashby or Edwin Hayter or Ashby-Hayter as he does not appear under those names in the 1901 census.

An ASHBY family DNA project has been started. If you have a male that is a direct line, that would be best. You may visit with them on the mtDNA for women and we may be able to use that information.
The test kit is 99.00 and 3.00 shipping. It is a simple mouth swab and then you will receive your results and copy will be posted for me to put on the web site.
There will be different "families" of Ashby's and there will be different areas when you can go and see which area your Ashby's originated from.
We have 5 people who have ordered test kits as of 3/01/06
and hope that many others will order their's soon.
Barry Ashby has agreed to be tested and this will be good for the study as he is a direct line to the Ashby's of VA that include the family of Turner Ashby.
Come on guys, order the kit and let's start the ball rolling of placing us where we belong.
If you have any questions please email me or call:
1-918-245-0959
To visit the FamilyDNA site and order your kit, go to:

http://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asp

Deanna Grissom

She named her first son after her Father, Joseph Henry.
Her second son was John L. Ashby who migrated to Arkansas and she shows there with him in the 1860 census. He shows in the 1865 census of ILL. living next door to his brother Joseph Henry Ashby for the duration of the Civil War. He then moved back to Arkansas until his death and is buried in Union Cemetery. The Ashby Cemetery is also located there.
If anyone requires copies of this information in order to prove their connection to the Ashby's of VA.
Ashby's Illinois

I am attempting to get started with my family tree and like most of us I did not record information other than verbal from my grandparents. My father was William Leander Ashby born and raised in Monticello, Illinois. His father was Edward Andrew Ashby who was born near Danville, Illinois. My great grandfather is a bit more difficult but I believe he was a Henry Ashby who was from Wayne County Indiana. Henry was married to Margaret Lucinda Canady born 31 July 1857. If anyone has any information on Henry Ashby I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. cootbill@home.com
