Looking for Sarah Catherine Asher

believe her mother's name was Susanna, born in Illinois. Married circa 1878 August Frederick Brueggemann. Have census evidence that the couple and their children lived on both sides of the state line in the St. Louis, MO area.

Family legend has it that Sarah's mother was a "Taylor" - tying in somehow to the family of President Zachary Taylor. However I cannot manage to proove Sarah's existence before she married August F Brueggemann.

Sarah is my great grandmother, her son John's middle name, Asher, is supposed to be from her maiden name.

ASHERS in Florida

Pursurant to my previous post about JAMES ASHER, I have been able to find a descendant (grandchild) of this James in Florida. Her name is SHIRLEY JOAN ASHER, born around 1935, and married in 1986 in Lake County, Florida. In fact, I can find records for her as late as the mid 1990s in Bradenton.

Would love to hear from anyone who knows or who is a member of this branch of the Asher family.

John b about 1829
Susanna - alleged via family lore to be a Taylor but I'm presently doubting that. b about 1836
Sarah C Asher b about 1854 later married August Frederick Brueggeman and I have them on a census living in Litchfield Illinois in 1880. Sarah and August are my great grandparents, looking to trace the line further.

thanks!
JAMES ASHER (b.1876) from Scotland in 1905

I am trying to trace any descendants of JAMES ASHER, who was born on 8 July 1876 in Blackhills, Elgin, Morayshire in Scotland. On 29 Sept 1899 he married MARY ANDREWS, who was born in 1874.

They had four children: JOHN McGILLIVRAY (1900-1905), WILLIAM NORMAN GRAHAM (b. 1901), MABEL MARY (b. 1904) and JAMES (b. 1905).

James, Mary, Norman, Mabel, and James arrived at Ellis Island on October 29th or 30th, 1905 aboard the S.S. COLUMBIA from Glasgow, which they had left on October 21st. Their last address in Scotland was given as Forres. The immigration records show that their final destination in the United States was to be the Citadel Building, 7th Street, Pillsburg/Pillsbury/Pittsburg (sic), Pennsylvania.

This family is recorded in the 1920 United States Census for Hartford, Connecticut.

In the 1930 United States Census for Washington, D.C., both James and Mary are mentioned, together with children Mabel and James. Also mentioned with this household are...Dora Asher (Daughter-in-Law, aged 25), and William Nottingham, Leila Nottingham (spouse), U. Dudley Rucker, Frances M. Rucker (spouse), Frances N. Rucker (child), and Polly Patterson (servant).

Would appreciate any help.

My Grandpa Henry Howard Babin was Georgiana Babin Asher's brother. There were 7 brothers and sisters in Georgiana's family. This is interesting because I am from the Babin side. Yes, Georgiana's dad was Levi. I believe he was born in Nova Scotia April, 1862 and died around July 1941 in Two Harbors. He was married to Mary Ann Lemere. She was born on Jan. 18th 1860 and died in Two Harbors on Jan. 4, 1933. My grandpa told me all of this information when I was a little girl. Georgiana and Roscoe had 7 children; Elmer, Orville, Marie (Sis), Everett, Lorraine, Lloyd, Howard and 2 lost. I don't know if they died in childbirth or what. I do remember Sis--she married Francis Croke and crazy as it sound they had 1 daughter named Georgiana. We called her Georgie for short. I only saw Lloyd once. They called him Circus. Hopefully this will help.

I work for the Houston (Tx) Public Library at the Clayton Genealogical Research Center. We are looking for information on the Asher Exchange a family newsletter started in 1993. Does any one know if it is still in publication?

We have issues 1-11 and would like to have any subsequent issues for our researchers to study. If you happen to have later copies and would be willing to donate them to our library, please contact me at susan.peterson@houstontx.gov

If you happen to have a current email or snailmail address for the editor, would you please send it to me?

Thank you for your consideration of our request.
Susan Peterson
Clayton Library
Houston, Texas

The only clue I found to the origins of Roscoe Asher is the 1900 fed census - Atchison Co - the ONLY other Asher Lora D Asher "servant" - as a POSSIBLE sister. Lora is a KNOWN child of Calvin Asher on the 1880 census (Roscoe was born too late to be included on this census.) Calvin dies before the 1900 cencus. Roscoe is a young adult, goes to work for the RR and ends up where the job takes him.

I find this a very likely scenario, but no way to confirm it.

Good luck with your search!
Roscoe Asher is born AFTER the 1880 cencus. There are no other reliable counts for Missouri until 1900. Calvin Asher died before the 1900 cencus.

IF (and I don't know how it could be proven other than private family records) Roscoe is the son of Calvin, This Asher line is well documented back to John Asher born abt 1661 in England.

This family is some of the first settlers into what later became TN. They went into Cherokee lands and there is strong history between the Ashers and Cherokee, although I have never been able to find a marriage into the tribe.

I have researched this line quite a bit, but my line goes directly from TN to MO (not thru Kentucky)

Crystal

I am wondering if the reason there is no record of him until the twentieth century if he might of grown up and or raised by a Native American tribe. One of his daughter's name is Indian. Is this possible to find out?

I have looked into the Babins' ancestry. They are quite a group. They moved from Quebec to Wisconsin. I am not sure Roscoe and Georgianna ended up together.

There is only one other Asher in Atchison County, MO on the 1900 cencus - Lora Dell Asher b. 1877 d/o Calvin Asher 1852 - 1894 and Mary Miller. Try as I might, I could not connect Lora to Roscoe. There is another sister Edith Pearl Asher b. 1878. All three are listed as "servant" on the 1990 cencuses. Roscoe is working for the RR in 1905 which gets him to Minnesota.

If you search familysearch dot org "Roscoe Asher" you will find death cert for Georgiana lising her parents (misspelled) leading to: Levi Babin and Mary Ann Lemere (Lemier)

It's a start...

Hi Tracy, So pleased to hear from you. My family line is Me, my father Joseph, his father Joseph, his father Joseph, his father Morris, his father David, his father Meyer. I have just recently found out that our Asher's were Dutch Jewsish. We certainly are related but what that makes us I haven't a clue. Can we share info?

Martin

Hi Martin,

I'm really hoping you're still able to receive posts from here.
Abraham and Mary were my grandparents! You didn't say who your father was but I am assuming it's Morris or John? My Aunt (their daughter obviously!) who's 89 now has been looking into the family tree for some time and I know she has a lot of information but also a few gaps.

Would love to hear from you, I assume we'd be third cousins perhaps?!

Tracy

In old family albums from my grandmother, Goldia Burdick, I have found several photos of a young Robert Asher, I remember him because we are approximately the same age. His mother's name was Ella and his grandmother was a wonderful lady we called Mrs. Harter. This was all in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1940's and 1950's If any of this sounds familiar I would enjoy hearing from you and sharing my memories and of course the photographs. My name is Jim Street, my mother was Opal and we lived for many years in Livermore, Ca.

Example: Reuben's marriage, Reuben's death certificate? I would suggest looking into Probate records. This is where I found some awesome info relating to parents. They do have an online link and they may be willing to help you via an online inquiry.
There is no headstone. Its just a little fenced in spot on the edge of the road. Its located at Roark, Ky 40979 in Leslie county on Hwy 406. Its doesn't take much of a detailed map to find it. Just turn onto 406 from Hwy 66 and go about 3/4-1 mile up the road and the first deep curve you hit you will see their little fenced in spot on your right.

So far I've had no luck!

All the info I have is the following:

Supposedly I come from chickamauga-cherokee tribe.

My father's name was Gary Ray Asher dob: 12/10/1966
His mother's name was Sharon (Johnson) Asher and his father's name was Danny Ray Asher.

Siblings of my father are: Jack Asher, Sherrie Asher, and Deborah Asher.

Any help/Info would be great. I need to date this all the back to the Dawes final roll.

Thanks

And please contact me at Caguilar39@gmail.com
