Hi Sue,
Back from holiday.
According to his relatives, my father was never the same.

I have been following up on the Elizabeth Peglar> Joseph Peglar and Mary Seager and come up with fascinating information via Ancestry.co.uk and internet links.

Joseph the son of George Pegler and Mary Poulton was baptized on April 04, 1781 in Nympsfield, Glos.

Joseph married Mary Seager on the 9 May 1802 in Calne, Wilts. they had 6 or more children:
Eliza b 29/12/1812;
Elizabeth 18/9/1814( Sarah A Ashman's mother)
Joseph 11/4/1819??; d 2/5/1821
Leah 6/8/1820; d 24/2/1821
Louise 6/8/1820; d 1/4/1821
Wm b??; d 8/6/1822
Sarah 23/5/1824

Going back to George Pegler b: Abt. 1749 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England; Christening: May 27, 1749 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Married to Mary Poulton b: Bef. 1752 on May 15, 1770 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
11 Children:
Sarah Pegler b: Abt. 1771 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England Christening: May 02, 1771 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Thomas Pegler b: Abt. 1772 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England,Christening: July 26, 1772 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Jane Pegler b: Abt. 1777 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England Christening: February 09, 1777 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
George Pegler b: Abt. 1775 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: January 05, 1775 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Joseph Pegler b: Abt. 1781 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: April 04, 1781 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Richard Pegler b: Abt. 1795 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: June 04, 1795 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Samuel Pegler b: Abt. 1797 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: August 09, 1797 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England; d: March 11, 1879 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Edward Pegler b: Abt. 1803 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: July 24, 1803 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Elizabeth Pegler b: Abt. 1803 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: July 20, 1803 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
Elenor Pegler b: Abt. 1810 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: February 11, 1810 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England
William Pegler b: Abt. 1810 in Nympsfield, Gloucester, England, Christening: February 11, 1810 Nympsfield, Gloucester, England; d: Aft. 1881.

More interestingly the Peglers are traced back to 1562!
George Pegler, born in 1749, was the son of George P(1718 – 1787)from Slimbridge and Edith Mills (1725 –?). This George was the son of George P(1687 – 1761)from Nympsfield and Heaveningham Bushell (1690 – 1760). In turn, this George was the son of another George (1649 – 1714)from Nympsfield and Mary Marlin (1649 – 1725. George was the son of Thomas Pegler (1638 – 1681) and Mrs Edith Pegler. Thomas was the son of Thomas Pegler (1580 – 1661) from Kings Stanley, Glos and Alice Merrett (1603 – 1681). Thomas was the son of William Pegler (1562 – 1665) from Stonehouse, Glos and Margery Blanche (1565 – ?)

Nympsfield, incidentally, is about 6 miles from where we now live. I never expected to get this far back for any of the family branches.
Best Wishes
Derek
Derek thanks for the info on your family. You asked if any Mills where connected with the war(s). well the only 1 I can definitely tell you about was my uncle les' LESLIE THOMAS MILLS 1924/ 1985.As you tell by the dates he survived the war but was left with terrible trauma as he was amongst the troops sent in to Hiroshima after the bomb.
He never married and though it seemed that he had got over it,he suddenly broke down at work aprox 1965/1970.He worked at the same place as my Dad his brother Universal Grinding Wheel Stafford at the time.My Dad never went to war,not for the want of trying he asked about 4/5 times to go I believe, but the powers that be said no because of reserved occupation. Sadly I never asked him what they made!Though I doubt very much if he'd have told me.Uncle Les was never the same again and he took to drink heavily and it took it's toll and his life eventually.
I can't confirm this as yet I hope in the future to get his records. Anyhow I hope you have had a good break!and I'll speak again soon all the best Sue

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the latest information about the Ashmans. I will add this info to the family tree. On Ancestry.com there is a family with a link to Mary Jane Ashman who it is claimed emigrated to Australia and onto America. Have you come across this link?

Mills in Wolverhampton
James, my grandparent, was born 1881 in Stafford. By 1901, the census records suggest he was living with his brother Charles and his wife Asenath in Coppenhall, Crewe. In 1905, he married Edith Elizabeth Howl in Wolverhampton.
They had four children:
James 1907,
Charles Henry, 1908- 1978.
Edith 1910?- 1989?
Roland, 1920 - 1978(my father).
I think that I have found a WW1 Pension Record for
James senior. I do not fully understand their significance but they appear to contain service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who were discharged from the Army and claimed disability pensions for service in WWI.
When the document was filled in (1914), James was living in Bagnall Street, Wolverhampton.

Unfortunately, our family tended to socialise more with my mother's side of the family so I have limited information about their lives. My grandmother, Edith Elizabeth Mills lived until 1972 but we never visited. Very sad indeed. Roland was the baby of the family and their sons and daughters were all much older than me so I had very little chance to get to know them.
James junior married Doris Hampton in 1942, They had one child, Andree who was a little older than me and whom I remember with great affection. I understand that Doris was a divorcee and had a daughter by her first marriage. I cannot remember her daughter's name but she married a gentleman with a lively reputation in W-ton called Billy Wilson. It would take another email to do justice to Billy as there are connections with the first London Marathon, the creation of the Tough Guy races in Perton and the Duran Duran pop group. James had a management position with John Thompsons, a manufacturing company who were based in Ettingshall in the Bilston area of Wolverhampton. Unfortunately his wife Doris developed MS and was very severely affected by it.

Charles married Irene Jones in 1936. They had two sons, Maurice and Melvin. They were quite a bit older than me and although we lived quite close in the Parkfields area of W-ton, we did not get together.

I knew Edith's family least. She married a gentleman called Cain and lived in the East Park area of W-ton. They had children all of whom were female but nothing more is known.

My own father was Roland. He married Violet, my mother, on 31st July 1943 at Bushbury church. Quite soon after he was conscripted and fought in the army in the Burma Campaign. I came along in 1949. Neither James nor Charles were called up.
Were any of Mills families from Stafford involved in WW1 or WW2?

All three brothers spent most of their working lives at John Thompsons in Ettingshall.

Hope this is useful. I am also researching my father's time in the Army in WW2 but not making much progress so far.

I am on holiday and away from the computer for the next 10 days. More than happy to answer any further questions about the Wolverhampton branch when I return.

Best Wishes for now.
Derek

Derek I would love to hear about the Wolverhamton Mills,s so I can tell my 3 sisters and 1brother the facts.
So the Ashmans, this info is which I got when my sister and I visited Bristol archives,It's from the baptism records.
Parents George and Elizabeth Peglar:
Mary Ann b 1838 bap mar 31st 1838 d 1841 Bristol
Elizabeth b 1840 bap 24th jan 1841
George b 1843 bap 12th feb 1843
Sarah Ann! b 4th mar 1845 bap 9th mar 1845 d 16th apr 1917 Stafford
Mary Jane b 1847 bap 16th may 1847
Joseph b 1849 bap 1st july 1849
John b 1851 bap 13th apr 1851
There is a strong possibility of 1 more
William march qtr 1853 (just before george died)
These kids were all baptised at- St Andrews church Clifton Bristol.

Parents Joseph and Elizabeth
As far as I know had 1 child
Mary Ann Ashman b aprox 1860/61
As she appears on the 61 cencus at 4 mnths born in Wiltshire Calne, though I believe she may well be registered in Bristol or Somerset.
Keep in touch Sue

Hi,
Thank you for the latest update.
I would be delighted to receive any information about the children from Elizabeth and Joseph so no need to be concerned about stealing thunder. I will look into Mary Seager.
James, my grandparent born 1881, had four children with Edith Elizabeth Howl. They are:
James 1907,
Charles Henry, 1908- 1978.
Edith 1908?- 1989?
Roland, 1920 - 1978(my father).
James had a management position with John Thompsons, a manufacturing company who were based in Ettingshall in the Bilston area of Wolverhampton. My Dad did clerical work there until he died in 1978.
The Charles in Wolverhampton was my uncle, Charles Henry, married to Irene. I think the Charles who married Asenath Dixon is your Grandad's brother born in 1873. I may have found him on the 1901 census living in Coppenhall, Crewe.

I have some limited information about these four Wolverhampton relatives that I can pass on. Also, I have traced back the Howl relations to the early 1800s. They all seem to have lived in Wolverhampton.
Regards Derek

Hi Derek great to hear from you again. How facinating that we lived so close to each other before! In fact I have a sister that lives in Braunton Devon so maybe the west country is calling?
Derek you say your Dad wasn't forthcoming on info on the family, I can only say it must run in the family of that generation because my Dad Henry wasn't helpful either!
He did say that he had 2 uncles that moved to Wolverhampton and that 1 of them was quite well off in buisness.
I am presuming this is Charles and Asenath Mills nee Dixon, who were in Wolverhampton the same time as James your Grandad and I believe ran a shop there.
I seem to agree with your Peglar info in that I "think" Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Peglar and Mary Seager.
Beyond that I have not been able to get any further.
Did you know that George Ashman died very young in an accident at work 1854 and that Elizabeth remarried to a Joseph Ashman who I believe to be Georges brother!Do you want the kids of both Marriages?I don't want to steal all your thunder.
Anyway to the Mills side, i won't give it all in 1 go I'll send you other messages when your ready.
James and Sarah did move to Stafford just before the 71 cencus as William their boy is only a few months old.
they were married in Bristol register office on Xmas day 1867 and as far as i can make out they had their first child James there in 68 but sadly he died the same year.
James proffesion was as a shoemaker and yes he must have come here because the trade here was at its height.
The children from their marriage are:
James 1680-1680
William 1870 - 1907
Charles 1873
Henry 1875
Louisa 1877
George 1878-1934 (my Grandad)
James 1881 (yours)
Sarah 1883
May 1884
Rachael 1886
Victor 1887.
I'll leave it at that for now and I'll send more tomorrow ?

Hi Sue,
Really good to get in touch- sorry for the delay. My name is Derek - Mary comes from the email address that my wife used to register with Ancestry.com.
We now live in South Gloucestershire, having spent most of our working life in South Staffordshire, near Codsall.
My Dad who spent his life in Wolverhampton was not very forthcoming about his relatives but there was some mention about a Stafford connection. I am fascinated about the connection with Bristol as we now live about 25 miles from the city and one of our sons lives and works there. In fact his first accommodation was in Bedminster.
Thank you for the information about George Ashman. I received Sarah Ashman's birth certificate last week from the GRO to establish George and Elizabeth Peglar as her parents. (Family links on the Ancestry.com site had suggested that her mother was Elizth Hill). I am interested to follow their relatives into Somerset and Wiltshire. On the Mormon IGI site there is a record of an Elizabeth Pegler being baptised in 18 Sep 1814 in Calne, Wiltshire. Her parents are Joseph and Mary. The surname seems quite common in the West Country (there are Peglars in the town where we live)and is spelt as Peglar or Pegler.
Going forward to the Mills family, I would be interested to know more about the moves to Stafford and onto Wolverhampton. James and Sarah seem to have moved to Stafford between 1871 and 1881 and I assume it was assocated with his work as a shoemaker. My grandparent, James, was born in Stafford in 1881 but is shown as living in Wolverhampton by 1914 via a WW1 Pension Record. My dad, Roland, was born in Wolverhampton in 1920 and married in 1943 just before he started his militiary service.
I am building up the family history on Ancestry.com under the Mills Family Tree - I think it is in the public domain. Please do not hesitate to contact me about gaps in the record. I suspect that you know far more than I do about the Mills family but I look forward to working together.
Best Wishes, Derek Mills

Mary how wonderful to have found a relative.Sarah and James were my g grandparents aswell. What part of the country are you?
Now i have researched all my Dad's side (Mills)and this could be a long message.Iwill try to be as specific as i can!
As you already know Sarah Ann Ashman married James Mills in 1867 bristol register office 25th dec
Her father george ashman c1811 (not sure) but from somerset married 25th dec 1836 Bedminster, before registration to elizabeth Peglar from Calne in Wiltshire.
Like you I can't find a 41 cencus for the family but 41 is not that reliable.
in 51 I have them living in Clifton along with various kids but not Sarah!
however she is on the 61 cencus with a Mary Newton in Wells as a servant, but I do Believe that Mary is her aunt on her fathers side.
George sadly had died in a work accident in 1854 (Ihave cert)age 41.
So by 61 I have Elizabeth remarried to Georges brother Joseph (married in 1855).They are living in crown court Bristol along with some of Georges kids and 1 of their own Mary Ann ( Georges Mary Ann had died by then (mar qtr 1841)
I have a belief that 1 or more of the kids may have left to go to Wales
If you have any questions I would love to help more.
All the Best Sue in Stafford.

Hi Derek,
I have recently started researching my family history and was delighted to find a link to this posting. I have just received a birth certificate for Sarah Ann Ashman (my great grandmother) which informs me that her father was George and her mother was Elizabeth Peglar. My Ancestry.co.uk network had suggested it would be Elizth Hill, so I am a bit surprised. I have found no link to the Ashman family on the 1841 or 1861 censuses. The 1851 census shows an Ashman family living in Clifton, Bristol but no mention of Sarah Ann. I have a marriage certificate for Sarah Ann Ashman and James Mills from 1867 and Sarah's father George is listed as deceased.
By 1881, Sarah Ann and James moved to Stafford and had 9 children, one of whom, James, moved to Wolverhampton in the early 1900s. He married in 1905 and all their four children settled in the Wolverhampton area.
If you have any comments or additional information on George, Elizabeth or Sarah Ann which fills in the gaps around 1836 to 1867, I would be very grateful.

Regards Derek Mills

Sorry to disappoint you, but we do not have a Robert Bird in our records.

We do have an Ann Ashman born about 1797/98 in Leigh on Mendip, but she married a John Padfield and died in 1825. There were no children. We have no other Ann Ashman from that time period.

As to a connection with the Bird family, we do have a Mary Bird, born about 1817, who married a Henry Ashman in Kilmersdon, Somerset in about 1836. Mary Bird's parents were Thomas and Susannah.

That's as close as we get. If you know anything about Thomas Bird, then there may be a connection to Robert Bird (since they were only born a few years apart in the same area of Somerset). There could be more Bird/Ashman intermarriages that we don't know about.

LG

I am looking for information about my father's family. His father was Thomas Album Ashman and he was married to Ellen Seale. My father was born in 1927 in St Pancras, London. This may have been his mother's 2nd marriage as I have been told she was widowed. My father had 2 older (half)siblings Sidney and Maud.

I have a previous address for my Grandparents from 1941: 23 Jeffrey Street, Kentish Town Road, London NW1.

My father's brother Sidney Ashman married Hilda in the UK and moved to California in the 1950s. They had 2 sons and the oldest,Lloyd, would have been born around 1950.

My father's sister Maud was married to Paul Smith and had 5 (?) children - the names I know are Micky, Tony, Alan and Maureen (all born before 1954). She remarried and her new surname was Stott and she had 1 daughter from this marriage. She lived in Lancashire as far as I know since the 1940s.

Elizabeth, I believe, is in my family line. They were married 3 Nov 1834. I have reason to believe that they did not live very long, but that they had two children. I have some information on the children. If anyone would know about this family, I would love to hear from you.

Cynthia
I've seen those other very helpful contributions from philip candy and peter gane.
Agnes Willan did not marry a Willan, that was her mother's previous name. A Sarah married Matthew Willan who must have died in the early 1860's. They had at least 2 other children, Matthew (1845) & Sarah (abt 1854). Agnes appears to be written down as Ann in the 1861 census. Looking at Ancestry bmd there is an Agnes that would fit (b. q1 1852 Auckland 10a 102) but no Ann, so I think this must be her. However, I should say that in that 1861 census her age is given as 11 which doesn't quite tally - so be cautious.

A good question, and one I would like to see answered at length. I think it most likely that they did. Carpenters are later found in Westchester Co., probably Quakers, and amongst them, I would not doubt to find Hope's descendants.
Thomas A. Murray

So far, about 50 years of research indicates that Robert's only son, John Ashman, died without any children. While Robert Ashman has thousands of descendants, and many had the name Robert in memory of him, the only descendants named Ashman would be the result of marriages with other Ashman families.

Thomas A.
The mess I dumped.

Hi Dean,
I wouldn't try to do much with that mess yet. For example, I spent a day chasing inormation on the Rev. Stephen Bachiler because one of his flock was a John Carman, they settled in Lynn, MA (from which one hoistorian suggested came the discontents of Watertown, MA, Wethersfield, CT and Stamford CT) only to find that it was the wrong John Carman. I did stumble into Capt. Mason and the Pequot (Pequod?) War, which probaly affected our ancestors, but I still haven't determined how much importance to give it. This morning I decided I needed a chart to track the movements of the original settlers at Hempstead. It took me two hours to find a transcription of the list; it will some time to create the table. What concerns me is that there are no references of substance to the Jaycocks and Robert Ashman before Hempstead. It is assumed that Robert Ashman was one of the earliest settlers (1643) in Hempstead, but when was he actually first mentioned. If he was a first settler, then he most likely (not necessarily) came by way of Stamford. If he was at Stratford (about 15 miles away) with Francis Jaycocks (for example) he may have come in 1643, or later.
And that's just on Thomas Flewelling Jr's side, I still have to deal with Hannah Smith, some new information on the Scudder's, and stuff. Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I have to create a table.

TAM

ROBERT ASHMAN my hard drive

Hi,
My hard drive died last week and I have lost all of the contacts I made over the last couple of months. I just wrote this message and lost it trying to juggle several messages at once. It will take me some time to get back to where I was. I am reluctant to leave my Email address on this forum, but Bonnie has a junk address at gwenbonniemurray@hotmail.com which I check every now and then. On this, you can leave a personal address, and as time allows, I will try to return the favour.
I was in the process of writing an essay on the ancestors of Thomas and Hannah (Smith) Flewelling involving the Ashmans, Flewellings, Jaycocks, Kings, Scudders and Smiths. I think I saved it just minutes in time. It was two weeks late, and needs two more weeks at least. That's my writing priority, so if I'm abrupt or slow, I hope you won't mind.
Now, let's see if I can do this right!

TAM

I am looking for information on Kate (Catharine) Ashman. Her maiden name was Randle. She married Paul Ashman and had at least two children, Paul and James. This family is from England. Her parent's names are George and Harriet (White) Randle, and she three siblings that I am aware of, Henry (Harry), William, and Elizabeth.

Verna,

I checked the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aids (www.islandnet.com) and did not find Beverley Ashman's name. You can also try the Canadian Genealogy Center (www.genealogie.gc.ca). Another source is the Ontario Genealogical Society (www.ogs.on.ca). The other suggestion you received to check the Toronto Star is good, you can also check the Mississauga News. Once you find the death notice, call the funeral home for more information. Sometimes the funeral home will have funeral cards left over and will provide one to your friend.

Good luck.
