Hannah Maria Ashton

According to the birth certificate of one of her children she married John Martin in Parramatta on 9 August 1854 and that she was born in Parramatta in 1834. Family stories say that she was the daughter of John Ashton and Mary O'Rourke. I have not found any information to confirm any of this inforamtion and I was hoping that someone on this site may know something or may be able to give me some tips.

Hannah Sarah Johnson, b. abt 1772 in New Jersey, d/o William Johnson & Elizabeth Longstreet, w/o Samuel Ashton, died in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, apparently as her family was in the process of moving from Pennsylvania to Ohio (her husband, Samuel, remarried in 1820 in Brown County, Ohio, died in 1834 in Brown Co., & is buried in Clermont County, Ohio). Hannah may have died shortly after giving birth to a son, Alexander H. Ashton. No legal citations apparently exist for Hannah's death. Does anyone have any family records? I can be directly contacted at oclub-home@columbus.rr.com. Thxs! Rebekah

I am posting my findings, details & citations on the free site: www.werelate.org.

Also, Christ Church in Philadelphia has their records of marriages & baptisms on line: www.christchurchphila.org.
I have gotten as far back as 1792 and have hit a block. My great*3 grandfather was James. We found him married to Anne in an 1850 Illinois census. As far as I can tell he had at least 3 children: James ( who married 3X the first being an Anne, then Sarah, then to Hannah Himes my great*2 Grandma) Ellinor and Anne b 1821.

Any one have more info as to where the family came from that would be great :)

The 'Edey' line has been traced through the 'American' pioneers of 1805 to Aylmer PQ from Randolph Vt. And from there back to a vicar in Cranbrook/Kent in 1559.

A photo of your grandparents's grave marker at St.John's Anglican cemetery on Sandhill Rd is available on-line.

My records imply your grandfather married Orpha Mabel Boyce [1924-1997] on the same date he married Olga. Since I show Olga died in 1949, I suspect the real story is something different. Perhaps your [war-bride?]Mother is the only issue of the marriage to Olga and your siblings are from the second marriage?
Death of Mrs. Lucy ASHTON survivor of Lord Rodney's Ship

From Liverpool Mercury etc ( Liverpool, England ), Tuesday, March 8, 1853; Issue 2482.

DIED.
March 4, at Walton-le-Dale, aged 73, Mrs. Lucy ASHTON , widow of the late Mr. Wm. ASHTON , innkeeper, of Ashton-under-Lyne, and mother of Mr. Henry ASHTON , surgeon, of Walton-le-Dale. The father of the deceased had charge of hoisting the signals on board Lord Rodney's ship, the Formidable, in the naval engagement of April 12, 1782; and
her mother, who was with him on board, sat with her ( then an infant nearly two years old ) on her knee during the whole of the action, at the bottom of the cockpit steps, so, that it is very likely, from her age, that she would be the last survivor of that action.

~ ~ ~ ~

No relation and no further info available.
I am looking for information on William M Ashton and Emma Ashton. They are listed in the 1910 census in Brooklyn. Emma was born about 1886 in NJ but we cannot find the correct spelling of her maiden name - Genist ?. Emma died about 1917-1918. William, born in CA, died about 1918-1919 and their son was placed in the Catholic Prepatory School. The father, William. remarried someone named Grace ?. The son was again placed back in the school after his father's death.
In the 1880 census, William Ashton, was listed as the child of William and Sarah Ashton, along with a Maria Judd listed as William's mother.
Any information about the Ashton and Judd families will be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Seems we have the same family here. Am wondering if Alfred Ashton and Ada Fenn are the same as rec'd on 1871 Census, living Camberwell. He was manager of mineral water works. When did Ada die? If before 1881 then I think it could be the same A Ashton(because of his birth date and place). Shown on 1881 census he is a visitor to Ruth O B Smith, 48 Bath Rd, Chiswick, his occupation unknown. On 1891 Census A Ashton is the household head living at Birchington on his own means as is Ruth above, also Walter O Smith born Lincoln, partially blind, a cousin, and Kathleen F ?(Price or Pull)? born Margate, Kent and is recorded as Price on Ancestry and Pull on Find my Past! She is adopted dau.age 15. I have a photo of a Alfred Ashton with inscription "about age 18 son of Francis Humphrey Ashton Born Feb 1847". (Photographer, C T Newcombe,Fenchurch St, City. My grandmother Kathleen called herself Kathleen Faith Reece Ashton, said she was born Ramsgate never mentioned adoption -claimed father was Alfred Ashton and mother Ruth Meyrick. Apparently mother died in childbirth or shortly after, Alfred lost his money on bad investment- so she goes to work. Recorded as governess in Cheshire 190l with the name Kathleen Faith Reece Ashton. Can't find Alfred dead, possibly prior to 1906 as K emigrated to Canada that year. Tried to get her birth certificate but GRO had no record of a K F R Ashton- suggested she changed her name. This Alfred looks the best I can find to date?! - because of the photo. Any ideas?
A true can of worms - Thank you for your last reply.
Regards, Frances.

Hi, Thank you for your message. Am wondering if we have the same Francis Humphrey in mind? I did find a FHAshton who died in 1848 at Dunmow, Essex. He appears to be the father of Alfred of whom I am really interested in knowing more about as I believe he is the one who adopted my grandmother about late 1800's. If you have an Alfred Ashton married to a Ruth O.B Smith whose on what must be a most interesting family tree as you describe - wow! I do wish everyone left an adequate paper trail - some of these people are very slippery to catchup with! Much appreciate your replies.

Regards, Frances.

In May of 2011, I found some old photos in an Antique Shop in Bellingham Washington. I tried to take some pictures of the front and backs of the photos with my cell phone.
There were a couple of pictures with an Amelia Ashton. There was also a Ray Greenwood ( about 14-18 mos. old), a John & Ellen Greenwood - on the back o that photo it said, "John & Ellen Greenwood, uncle & aunt of Irving Ashton." The couple were in about their late 20's.
There were a couple of pictures of Mabel & Irving Ashton, I am assuming they are brother & sister. In one photo Mabel was about 6-8 mos, and Irving maybe about 3-4 yrs. old. In another picture, they were about 4 yr. & 7 yrs. old.
There was a group picture with an Amelia. On the bottom corner it said, "Presbyterian Church, Buckingham, Ill."
The pictures are difficult to read because they are just taken with a phone camera, but if this seems like your family, you might check with the Antique Shop. I picked up a business card, but I'm not sure what I did with it. You could probably find the shop name on the Internet. It is in the old part of town.

Some of the writing on the pictures was difficult to make out.

Other pictures include:
Ada Gifford (Robbinson) – about 18 – 23 yrs. In picture w/ Pearl Wood Ashton – also about 18-23 yrs. Old.
Lonnie Wood – Died age 19 from Typhoid fever – brother to a (?? Clanner Wood - ??)
Lillie Warner ( about 18- 19 yrs. Old)
Margaret Wood(s) – Pearl Ashton’s Grandmother ( about 70 yrs. Old)
?? ?? ( maybe Morris or Mannie Fuller) – Great uncle to Pearl Ashton on mother side – md. Grandma (?? Sydmire) sister
Oliver Christian – died young - brother of Amelia Ashton
Grandma Christian – Irving’s Grandma
?? ?? ( maybe Bernice DeMontella or DuMontilla) Baron (abt 4-5 yrs. Old)
Mrs. Alford, wife of minister who married (?? Fannie ?? and ??Clanner Wood)

I haven't yet downloaded the pictures, because I have an older phone, but you may contact me if you wish.
Leta@clearwire.net

Best of Luck,

Leta Shell
Can not find a connection but know there was Ashton in the Bideford area. The closes in mine is Richard chr. 1821 Beaford, but was told he died in Canada.

Bideford isn't to far from Marwood or Beaford and have that feeling that these branches are related.

Do you think his parents were Richard and Susanna?

Have you tried the Last Wills, Court Records, The Times (London), etc... (Also, maybe Rootsweb.com Family Tree has a connection that you can use as a guide?)

I've been researching for over 10 years but there are a lot better persons at this.

Thank you for your answer. And thank you for your OPC work for Devon. I have not managed so far to get back further than 1807 with the birth of Richard ASHTON in Bideford. By 1841 he is in The Royal William Victualling Yard in Devonport and is in the police force on duty there. He married Ann in the June quarter of 1838 but, not having bought the marriage cert yet I don't know whether she is Ann ALLEN or VANSTONE. Have only been doing research online so far, but we plan to visit Devon in the summer to take the lines back further.
Richard and Ann ASHTON had five children and it is Susan who married into the STEBBING family, the maiden name of first interest in this research. The STEBBING family lived in Plymouth until very recently.
With thanks, Stephanie

Dear Juliet,
As you will have noticed my father died in 1985 and yet many people still fondly remember him. I actually moved to the North of England in 2004 to take up a senior lectureship position at the University of Central Lancashire. My mother and sister still live in the South of England. I always new that I had an uncle called Mark but for some reason we never met up with him. We were in constant touch with his sister Evelyn (Eve) and Paul who both are sadly no longer with us. My mother had power of attorney for Eve when she was in her 90's. Another sister of Mark was May who died in the 1980's but she still has a daughter Pauline who lives in Southport. My mother still heres from her occasionally.
I think that it is strange that life can be cyclical as my father Ellis was born in Liverpool which was then part of Lancashire and that now his son has moved back to Lancashire. Although, I am now 52, my first son was born in August 2010 and he is keeping up the name since he is called Ellis Ashton.
I would love to here from you and I can fill you in any details you would like to know. My e-mail address is acashton@uclan.ac.uk or tonyatrings@btinternet.com.
Kind regards
Tony Ashton

Dear Mr Anthony Ashton

My name is Juliet Moreton and I am the daughter of Joan Ashton (now Halsall), who is your father's neice! We both live in Southport. Today i found out about your father, Mr Ellis Ashton, who is a brother of my late grandad, Mark Ashton. My grandad died in July 2004 and my grandmother, Elsie, has now gone to live in Scunthorpe with her son. My grandmother will soon be 96 years old. Tonight I've been searching on the internet to find out more about your father, who is my great uncle. As i find it so interesting that he worked in TV. I have just been looking on Yahoo and it led me back to this page on Ancestry. So i quickly found you for the first time! Today when my mother visited me, I found your father on Wikipedia and we were amazed. We were trying to find out more about the Ashton family and my grandad's brother, Paul. My mother mentioned that my grandad had a brother named Ellis, but we didn't know much about my grandad's family. I am very impressed to see all that your father achieved in his career and would love to know more. I'm interested to see that your father worked for ITV, i'd love to work there, but i don't live near London!

I do hope to that you receive this message.

Best Wishes from Juliet

Hello,

I'm not sure if you still check ancestry.co.uk after all this time but I read your last posted message and a name got my attention.

I'm researching the Booth line in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, England. My great, great, great grandfather is a Joseph Booth, born in 1818 in Lincolnshire who married Sarah. I don't have a surname for her or the names of Joseph's parents.

I see that you know of a Joseph born in Lincolnshire in 1818 and married to a Sarah Nichols. Could this be the same man? Your Joseph died in NY in 1899. This is what leads me to believe it may not be the same person (as I'm assuming my ancestors stayed in England) but I thought it interesting that there are similarities.

Of course, names like Joseph and Sarah are common and Lincolnshire is a large county but I thought I would contact you in the hope that you may have information to confirm one way or the other if this is the same man (assuming you still use this site).

Thank you for your time,

Regards,

David.
Bob,
Hello Bob,

William G Mitchell (1838-1873) was Eleanor Clara Halbert's first husband. They had one daughter, Sara Jane (1872-1918) and a son Lee (never married and moved away to Colorado).

James Turner (1828-1876) was Eleanor's second husband (after Mitchell died). They had one child, a son, William Loring (1876-1959). William was my grandfather.

I have more info regarding both the Mitchell and Turner families.

What data do you have about Mary Clementine Boulrice (m. Nathan Halbert) other than the fact that she was an American Indian from Louisiana? I have snippets of information from my grandmother: Mary spoke only French and once through a slipper at my grandmother because grandma couldn't understand French! ....or so the story goes....

Caroline Turner-Eldredge
harborbliss@yahoo.com

I'm looking for information about great, great grandmother Mary Clementine Boulrice m. Nathan Halbert. Do you know which Indian tribe she belonged to? I have a lot of information about Nathan and some of their eight children.
Nathan and Mary's daughter Eleanor Clara (Turner) was my grandfather's mother. His name was William Loring Turner. If you need information about his family I can help.

Caroline Turner-Eldredge

Came across this whilst searching for "Ashton" on my Grandmothers side.
I cannot help so far except with putting you in a different direction on this.....{quote} I believe that Chaderton is in Lancashire some place around Ashton Upon Lyne.{quote}.

That is not strictly true and I hope you haven't been searching in the wrong place.

I suggest you look around "Ashton under Lyne".

Re: John Ashton's wife, Grace Meese

According to the family history that I have gathered over the last few years I have found that my grandmother was a descendant of Captain John Ashton, b. abt 1623 and his wife Grace Meese in two different ways. The first way thru their daughter Sarah Ashton who married Philip Alexander and the second way thru their son Captain Charles Ashton who married Frances Burdett. These lines go down thru the Alexander's, Stuart's, Ashton's, and Wray's to my greatgreatgrandfather Burdett Ashton Stuart who was born in King George Co. VA in 1817 and died in Cole County, MO in 1882.
The oral history in my mother's family was that her mother had a many times greatgrandfather who was an Indian Chief.
No other native American has been found in my genealogy, and because I have seen several references to John Ashton's wife Grace Meese being the daughter of Mary Princess of the Potomacs, being the daughter of Chief Wanahanagochee (spelling) I am thinking that may be the case and that is where the family tradition came from. Sure would be nice to prove that to be the case.
Just thought that you might be interested in what my family tradition was.
