Hi,
I have not been able to find her maiden name either. But, on the death record of William's daughter Alice she lists her mother as Margaret Wilson. This is confusing as her mother (as I have it) is a Sarah J ????.

I did find this though on the Elgin County genealogy page:

Died - Mrs Bingham, mother of James Astleford; sister of Mrs William Vair and Mrs Helen Anderson
St. Thomas Daily Times
St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada
5 March 1915

Thanks for the info on Margaret,
Hi Lee,
I seem to recall William Bingham was a boarder with the Astlefords. Also, I came across a listing for a border crossing Detroit to Canada Oct 16, 1909 for William and Margaret Bingham. Date of death for Margaret March 5, 1915 in Kingston, Elgin, Ont. Need to research that more. Still no record of her maiden name anywhere.

Thanks for the reply.
William Bingham was from NY, not exactly sure where in NY. He lived in Nashivlle during the 1860 census, then to Baltimore, MD by the 1870 census, then to Canada by 1881 where he was living in the same home as Margaret.

They lived in Detroit for a while, then William died in Cleveland where his daughters lived. Do you know when or where Margaret died or is buried? William was supposed to have been buried in Detroit, but not sure where.

Let me know if I can be of any help,
Thanks,
Lee Ralph
Hi, thanks for the info. Margaret and William Astleford were my great great grandparents. She later married William Bingham. Their son James Astleford moved to the Detroit area where subsequent generations are mostly living. I am getting back into more research and will share any info I can uncover. I know I have more family records to review.

Barbara (Bunch) Davis
Chattanooga, TN

After that I lose him.

Can any one help me with this family, or have info on them?
Thank You,
Lee

Do you have access to a book "From Sea To Shinning Sea": by J. R. Astleford? It was published for Astleford relatives when there was an Astleford reunion in Calgary, Canada many years ago. It is full of charts, letters, and pictures on 673 pages (doubled sided 8.5" x 11"). I have a copy and it has taken years for me to transfer the information from it to my computer (still in the process). I think the oldest entry is for William Ashelford christening date of Jan. 9, 1542. The family originated in Devon in South West England. From there they spread to Somerset and Wales, Surrey, London and Lincoln. Eventually one of them found his way to Ireland. The first record in Ireland is around 1725.

You are indeed right on. Grandfather TR's mother was Lydia Knowles. I have seen her grave which has been washed away by a huge flood years ago now.

My Father "Lunney" and Mother "Bessie Smith Astleford" had 4 children. Marvin, who passed away early last year. That was very hard on me to loose my oldest brother who had to watch that I did not get into trouble when I was a tiny one. My second brother retired in England. Unfortunately he has Alzheimer's now and lost much memory. I am the third child and my youngest brother Joseph "Joe" is the baby of the family.

My parents were missionaries and I was born in Willemstad Curacao in 1934. A few years ago I went back in honor of a 75 anniversary of work that had been done there. My Dad had been the first president of the mission and was honored by me while I was there. I was treated like royalty and had a most marvelous time.

On one occasion a number of years ago now, he made a trip to Wicklow, Ireland. He was very happy indeed to locate cousins who lived there. They apparently had a wonderful time visiting together. Maybe you can tell me more about them. It seems to me that one was named John, although I sure could be wrong.

My Grandfather lived out his days in Bella Coola, British Columbia. While this is a remote area, it is very beautiful and is located on the coast just above Vancouver Island at the end of an inlet from the sea. Marvin stayed with him for a while and cared for him as he got older. Those memories of grandfather stayed with him all his life and had a remarkable influence on how he lived his life. Grandfather was very respected wherever he went with wonderful memories he left behind with all who knew him.

My Dad had a younger brother who passed away in Billings Montana a number of years ago. He had sisters - - Mildred passed away in Riverside California. Norrie passed away in San Diego. Bertha passed away in China as a missionary there.

I live near Everett, Washington, about 45 miles north of Seattle, WA. I have 3 children, Scott, Wes and Laurie with my first husband, John Roberts, who was from Scotland who live within 30 miles of where I live. My second husband, Willis Hilde, passed away in 1993. So, I live alone now.

Well it is late and I must go to bed.

Mary Hilde m.hilde@verizon.net

There was a Charles W. Astleford who was born and raised in Iowaand moved to Caldwell, Idaho, after retiring from the US Army. He was Caldwell Idaho's chief of police until retiring in 1981.

I do not know of the above mentioned Charles W. Astleford. However, I do have an Astleford book created by a James Astleford, son of a James Astleford that perhaps the lineage of Charles W. Astleford may be listed. I would have to look it up.

FYI: I am the former Mary Ellen Astleford, daughter of Lunney & Bessie Astleford (both now deceased). Lunney was the son of Thomas Richard Astleford & Harriet (Lunney) Astleford. Years ago, my Father did make a trip to Ireland to check into the Astleford family. I currently have a brother living in England.
