Hello there,
It seems that I am also related to the Fryers of Bristol and Trowbridge. It appears that John Fryer born about 1785 in Trowbridge might be my ggggf. Astley is the middle name of both my father and brother. Have you any additional info on John Fryer or his father / father's father?

I'm trying to find information on my gg grandfather, Edmund Astley, born in England in 1804. He married Mariah Walker in Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire in 1833 and came to New York between 1833 and 1836. They are related to Mary Ann Scholfield of London, who sent a letter to Michigan around 1848. I believe she was Mariah (Walker)Astley's sister.

I would appreciate any information you could give me.

Thank you,
Laurie

Re: Astley's of Scotland

I am an Astley. My Grandfather was Joseph Astley. I think that Thomas Astley would have been his Uncle. He was born in Creetown and I think it would have been 1925. I am not sure what his Fathers name was but should be able to find out from my Dad. I know his that my Great Grandfather was born in Creetown as there are photos of him as a child outside the School. My Great Grandfather married a lady from Ireland and when my Grandfather was 2 they moved there. They returned to Scotland and set up home in Dumfries before the war. I would love to know more about the Astleys, like how they came to live in Scotland as it is not a Scottish name. I also know that they worked in a quarry and that my Great great Grandfather invented some kind of drill for quarring stone. any more information would be appreciated.

Is there an Astley - Fryer connection?

This is a shot in the dark. I am descended from the Fryers of Bristol, and of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. My ggg grandfather, John Fryer (b.1784, d.1848, Wiltshire) married a woman for whom I only have the first name, Mary. However, their first child was christened John Astley Fryer. The tradition of naming one of the sons in their direct line Astley, as a middle name, continued from that generation to the present day. I wonder if that means that Mary was an Astley, and if her family had some significance that led to the continuation of the tradition. Can anyone shed any light?

Sorry but no link here. My Astleys started in Golborne, Leigh areas then were married at M/cr cathedral 1835, then moved to Bury, Heywood, etc.and later Oldham.
I know there were lots in Blackburn (and Bolton where I was born) but none linked to my lot so far. Your name Johnstone means nothing to me.
I note your name is Tomlinson (?) - one of my great aunts b.1865 in Bury, Elizabeth Ellen Astley marr. a Charles Tomlinson but he died very young as did their dau. Edith. She then marr again to George Paton of Oldham.
Thanks for your message - I am glad to hear of anyone else researching Astley even if not connected!
Rita.

If anyone has any comments they would be well received.

Kevin,
Yes! I can help. I know it's been about 6 years since you posted. I can only hope that this gets to you. I have a connecting to the Lord Hastings, and have more information about Melton Costable and the area than you can shake a stick at. Please let me know what you would like and I will be more than happy to help.
A little sample is, did you know, that in the 1920 - 1940 it was very posh to go to Melton Constable for the Auto Club that was run by the Lord Hastings. It was the place to see, and be seen at the time.
Again, I am sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Please feel free to e-mail me at astley.cd@forces.gc.ca
