I am so glad to finally get information on Mary Ann's family. I live in central Ohio east of Columbus and when the weather improves, maybe I can do some cemetery searches for Thomas and Abigail. If you find the documents, perhaps you could scan them and email them to me at joang@embarqmail.com It's interesting that we named our son Thomas.

I have LOTS of info on Thomas. What are you looking for? His father William fought in the Revolution, but I can not find anything that ties William to any of his kids. Thomas'will is in Champaign county, Ohio and Abigail's DC is in the same. (I have both if you need them), so I think they are buried somewhere there, although I do not have any idea where that might be.

I come down this family line from Mary Ann Atha who married Joseph Wilson in 1835 in Logan County, Ohio. Any information you can share from Thomas' will would be greatly appreciated. I will try to search for the place where Thomas and Abigail might be buried. Is it possible that they may have moved to Illinois?

I am trying to research my family, but appears I have run into a brick wall. I am trying to find any correlation, if any, between Walter Atha (B. 1801 D. 1890) and his father, William Athey (B. 1746 D. 1818). I need this information regarding the Revolutionary War. If anyone has any help or if I need to take a different direction, please let me know. Thanks so much.

Hello, I am Michael Atha son of Larry and Marcie Atha. My Grandfather's name was Samuel Pembrooke Atha. We are from WV as well. Sam was born near Armstrong Creek WV (near Kimberly). Sam's father was Wiliam Pembrooke Atha. Please see following document:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~elkridge/H...

William Pembrooke /Sallie Sherwood ATHA family, John F /Carolina Keller HOFFMAN, Tom REDMOND family, and the PAYNE family were living on Armstrong Creek on small subsistence farms in an area known as Elk Ridge when the coal mine started. Elk Ridge was in the Allegheny Mountains near Armstrong Mountain in Fayette County , WV . These families tilled their acreage scattered about the mountains. They were excellent hunters, self reliant and could do anything that needed to be done. They tanned leather and made shoes; they prepared the flax and wool for the loom and frequently wove the cloth. They were masters of coping with extraordinary emergencies. There were some Cherokee Indians living with White families in the mountains.

I was always told our name derived from the word athapaskan which is a word used to describe certain indian tribes.Of course you'd have to find a really old dictionary to look it up

Thomas Gilbert Atha

I am the GrGr Grandaughter to Thomas Gilbert Atha. Son of Joseph & Anna Atha, son of William and Mary Ann Atha.

He had 4 children. Ruby, Harold, Drussia, and Dorsey. Dorsey is my Gr grandfather through my Grandma Florence Marie Atha.

My Grandmother will not discuss anyone in the family past her father Dorsey. She always told my dad that Thomas Gilbert "Bert" was from Germany, that she knew him as Grandpa Athey, did not speak hardly any english and was a translater for the military, was a large animal vet-specializing in horses, and a milkman. We knew that he had a wife named Ella. We were also told that he had mental health issues and lived his last view years in a state hospital.

Through researching, I have found that "Bert" was born and raised in the USA, in Ohio, moving to Jay County, Indiana as a small boy. Was able to confirm he was a large animal vet in Portland, Winemac, Argos and Plymouth Indiana. He was also a milkman in Jay County, Indiana. He was largely into horses, as well as his son Dorsey. After his wife passed away, he remarried Clara Lange and moved. He did live his last 8 years at Logansport, State Hospital and died in 1950 from a stroke. Dorsey would not talk about him.

I am looking for any information or pictures that anyone has to share. The family states they have nothing on him. There has to be something somewhere.

These are my Athas. I have Thomas' will and Abigail's death cert. Their daughter Nancy Ann married Thomas Jefferson Fields in 1845. They moved over to Washington Twp, Union County where they are buried in Burnside cemetery. Their daughter Rhoda Victoria Fields is my G2.

Do you know where Thomas and Abigail are buried? Any idea if William Athy, Thomas' father fought in the Revolutionary War?

Update:
Having at last managed to get a certified copy of the marriage certificate of my 2* great grandfather, Charles Atha (b. c1819 in Leeds) and his wife, Mary Fearnsides (b. c1820 in Leeds) I have found that his father was called Martin and not George as previously seemed likely.
Mary Fearnsides father was called Benjamin. I haven't found any further information on these people yet.

Both Mary and Charles surnames were mispelled on the Birth index - hence my problem finding their marriage certificate (Fearnsides is the maternal surname on their son, Samuel's, original birth certificate which I obtained through the family.)

The names Athon and Athan and Athens are some of the localized variations in America of the pretty solidly Irish Atha/Athy/Athey lines that originated in Ireland and can be found in some places in England. Gerard d'Athie may have come from Brittany in France to oversee some of his French lord's land holdings in Ireland. If your family has the legend about Sicily, though, I would begin with looking at Sicilian surnames (in Sicily, not America or Canada) and see if any of them might be shortened to Atha. On the other hand, are you sure the legend is about your Atha paternal line, and not a maternal line somewhere in your ancestry? Best of luck!

All from Leeds - mainly Hunslet and Holbeck. I haven't yet gone into parish records as I am a single mother with a 9 year old autistic son and don't have time to drive to Leeds and back while he's at school.

I have bmd certificates and census evidence back to a Charles Atha born about 1819 in Leeds and have been told that his father was called George Atha (b.19 Oct 1778 in Holbeck, Leeds). I think the person that gave me this information had looked into parish records, but I couldn't swear to it. According to this person George's father was called Samuel (b.1748 in Leeds) and his father was called Charles Atha (b. before 1731).

I hope this is of some help to you, but I have an Atha friend in Georgia who hasn't found a link with me yet. There do seem to be a lot more Atha's in the States than there are in England so there may have been a mass exodus at some point. It would be interesting to find out why.

Where did your ancestors live? I am also an Atha but live in England.
I have been told that there are 2 origins to the English surname Atha one from Ireland where it meant "ford over the river Ae" and one from Ancient Briton where it meant "dweller at the enclosure" (a type of village, not a prison). It could also originate from Scandinavia.
Atha is also a Pakistani surname.
I believe that in arabic and chinese Atha means gift.
Jeannie

There are families with the Atha surname in the U.S. that descended from George Athy/Athey, who was born in Galway, Ireland in 1642 and came to Maryland circa 1662. Some of his descendants changed the name to ATHON, ATHA and ATHANS. My family ended up with it spelled ATHEY.

You might try some of these various spellings. If you know of a male descendant of your great-grandfather, Henry Madison Atha, you should suggest they participate in the Athey DNA study. You can read more about it here: http://www.hprg.com/athey/

Best of luck with your research,
Darlene Athey Hill

Hi, my name is Dave Atha and I live in the UK. Atha is a name from the north of England, with most Athas being found in Yorkshire - a large north eastern county of England. I am originally from Leeds, as were my parents and paternal granparents. My brother, an archaeologist, did some research and reckons that the name is Norse and came into northern England with the Vikings. Originally it was probably At't'Hay, as in John At't'Hay. In Yorkshire people who speak the local dialect often drop 'the' in front of a word, using just a 't' sound i.e. are you going to t'school? The purer form of the name may in fact be Athey - another surname common in Yorkshire.

Anyhow, it appears that many Athas left the UK for a better life in the USA. There are certainly now many more Athas in the States than there are this side of the pond!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Daev.

I show 1834 in Logan Co., OH, as the birthdate for Thomas Atha, the son of Thomas Atha and Abigale Miller. I have Sabina Hervey as his wife, with children; Ferguson, Edward, Amanda and Rose (no dates). It is possible he may have been married more than once, and the initial "M" could be for Miller.
