Charles Fremont Rogers was my great grandfather. I checked with my 88 year old Mom and she was unaware that her Grandfather owned a boat building company. She said that as an undertaker - he probably had extra money to invest in other businesses.

I was reading that book about Teddy Roosevelt and the Amazon at lunch today and just came across the Rift Climbing Boat Company of Athens, PA too. I grew up there and never remember any mention of that. Very interesting. Are you David Lnych who took piano lessons from Genevieve Cotton?

Mary C. Athens was born 14 Jan 1829 in VA, and died 26 June 1872 in Huntington County, IN. She with her husband are buried in the Purviance Cemetery, Huntington County, IN.

Like you my Grandfather changed his surname from Athanasakis to Athens when he came from Greece. My Grandfather was from Crete. If anyone shares this last name I would to hear from you.

Rift Climbing Boat Co. - Charles F. Rogers

I am searching for any info on The Rift Climbing Boat Co. - Athens Pa. circa 1910 - 1917? They supplied T. Roosevelt with two custom boats for his voyage on The River of Doubt in 1913 in South America. I have been able to find some info but it has been elusive. Any help would be much appreciated.
The owner of this co. was Charles F. Rogers who had "Rogers & Miller furniture and undertaking" (formally "Rogers & Taylor 1897) at 227 S. Main Athens, for several years.

Athens is such an unusual name, I am looking or an Athens, that married a cousin in Pulaski County Little Rock, in the 20's. I don't think they were married for very long at this time I don't know why. Did Sara have any boys? do you know who they married?

Athens land grant surnames

I have 3 petitions for the grant of land written to the govt. of Vermont. There are 50 or more surnames listed there, many of which were rev. war veterns.They did not all live on the land. Petitions were written in 1780 and the land was granted in late 1780. I would be glad to give you a name or several, maybe even all if you will let me know. I am researching Able Mattoon who was on the list and became the first representative to govt. of vermont. Any info on him would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sarah Athens and Robert Armstrong are my great grandparents also, thru their son Robert Landon (Landy). I actually have a little less info on the Athens than you do. I

Looking for birth information on Mary C. Athens.
She was born about 1829, I'm assuming in Virginia in the Rockbridge area.
She lived with the James Adams family in Huntington, Indiana, when she was 21after the family had moved from Rockbridge.
She married Robert A. Adams, son of James April 10, 1853 in Huntington, Indiana.

I'm sure this is a common name but I have a Betty Athens that married Salvatore Pellecchio (or Pellecchia) and they had a son, William and he had 2 sons William and Jeff. They came from Conn. Don't know if this helps or if there is any relation.

You may be interested to know that many Greek families in America have taken the name Athens as a surname. They shortened their Greek surnames and found Athens perfect because of the historical links. Thus in my own family, Athanasoulas became Athens in Chicago. Athanaseides, Athanakos, Thanasoulas, Athanasios, all of these used the same formula

My great grandmother was Sarah E. Athens, born in Wyandotte Co., Kansas in 1857. She was orphaned, and believed to have been raised by an uncle George Athens, who owed property in the county. She married my grandfather, Robert D. Armstrong, born in Parkersburg, WVA in 1843, in 1880. They moved to Arkansas in the late 1880s, with all their young children. Sarah died in Arkansas in 1934. I hope this info is useful to someone. Would like info on any other Athens.

Josiah Athens married Elizabeth Brown in Hancock County, Mississippi. They are the parents of William Athens, my great grandfather. The Athens probably migrated from Georgia, some of that extended family probably did live in Tennessee at some time. It's feasible - don't find the name Martha in my paperwork.
You may want to check with clbkroeger@aol.com - she has done a lot more research on the Brown family.

I have a Martha Athens in my family that married a Samuel Chase Bell. Samuel Bell was born in east Tennessee but died in Yazoo County, Mississippi. I noticed that your Athens kin comes from Mississippi. Would like to have info if you think that your Athens and my Athens could be related. Thanks!
