Mary (Burwell) Atkin - OBIT

Hello all, as far as I can tell, I am not related to this lady, however, her obit had been cut out and was in my CROCKETT family bible. Don't know if this will help anyone or not, but will try and transcribe the obit:

Mrs. Brown Atkin, Widow of Financier, Dies at 77

Mrs. Mary Burwell Atkin, who lived to see three new generations of her prominent Knoxville family, died peacefully at 12:15 p.m. yesterday at Fort Sanders Hospital.

Mrs. Atkin was the wido of Clay Brown Atkin, financier and big-scale industrialist here before his death in 1931. She was an alert leader in her family and in social circles up until her 77th birthday last Oct. 29. She became ill shortly thereafter and was taken to hospital Nov. 8.

Building Bore Her Name
During her last years the head of the Atkin family group spent most of her time at her big white Colonial homeplace at 518 West Main Avenue. It is one of the last large homesteads, of expansive grounds, left in the downtown section.

After former Knoxville Bank & Trust Co. moved from Burwell Building, Gay Street and Clinch Avenue, Knoxville's "first skyscraper," Mr. Atkin bought the building and named it for Mary Burwell Atkin. She came here from her native Pennsylvania with her parents, William G. and Mary Price Burwell, in 1891. She and C. B. Atkin were married Dec. 19*, 1894.

Funeral Plans Given
Services will be at 11 a. m. tomorrow at St. John's Episcopal Church of which Mrs. Atkin was a member. The Rev. William S. Lea, the rector, will officiate. Burial in Greenwood.

Mrs. Atkin leaves three daughters, Mrs. Edwin R. (Edith) Lutz, Mrs. J. Kennedy (Eleanor) Craig and Mrs. Charles E. (Marian) Rankin, all of Knoxville; a sister, Mrs. John Warrington, of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Mrs. John P. Carter Jr. and John E. Lutz, II of Knoxville, Mrs. Paul A. Christensen, River Forest, Ill., and William A. Akers, U. S. Air Forces, San Rafael, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Diana Carter and Ane, Eleanor and Peter Christensen.

Grieved by Grandson's Fate
A tragic loss in the Knoxville woman's last years was the death of her grandson, Capt. Brown Atkin Craig, who fell in action in Holland in 1944.

She bore up bravely, as she did at the death of her husband 18 years ago. But after C. B. Atkin's passing, the widow never again used their summer home, Edelmar, a huge place standing high amidst spreading grounds on Topside Road on the south side of Alcoa Highway.

The name "Edelmar" is a combination of first syllables of the three Atkin daughters. They spent many a happy childhood sumer with their parents there.

A slim erect person, of stately bearing and warm, friendly manner, Mrs. Atkin's gracious hospitality at both her town and country homes was something for her hundreds of friends to look forward to.

*Obit was tore at this place, believe to read 19, but could possibly be 18

greetings, I am the male descendent of my great grandfather, David Atkin, who is buried in Leigh churchyard. He died in the early 1900's; occupation, tailor and farmer, having been born in Doveridge,Derbys. His father was one George Atkin, legend has it that he was an inn keeker or something of this ilk, who provided horses for stage coaches.
The family was centred on the Leigh;Hilderstone; Utoxetter area, from this time.
I have not done much research of late but will check my records in due course if this is interesting to you. Ann is a name that features in the family

Captain James Atkin

Hi, I'm trying to track back on my Atkin ancestry from Hull. I'm descended from Elizabeth (aka Eliza) Atkin, born 1810 in Hull, who married George Empringham in 1883. The IGI record for her christening has her parents as James and Eleanor, but I can't find their marriage. I have found other records for her siblings, and it's the records for the burial of one of these (Eleanor Hall Atkin, 1808-1809) which tell me James was "Captain James Atkin".
But I only have a tentative birth for James, and no sign of him in death or other records, although he may have died before 1841 as he doesn't seem to appear in that census and his wife is living with Eliza and George Empringham - the entries are so limited that they don't record if she was a widow, and she died 1849 so no evidence from later, more detailed, censuses.
Any help most gratefully welcomed.
Phil

Hi, I'd like to take you back a further 200 years. Do you have any information you can add to the following?

Ann Atkin married a Thomas Lyemar of Cheadle on 20 April 1674. Thomas was born in Cheadle in 1651.
I am a direct female descendant of Ann. She and Thomas had several children, one of whom Anne Lyemar was born on 17 Apr 1690 and married a Benjamin Belcher on 07 July 1716. They both lived and died in Leigh.

I know all about the female descendants and spouses etc. I'm just wondering who Ann Atkin was and had she always lived in Cheadle. The descendants are slowly moving out of the immediate area, through marriage. So the towns Cheadle, Leigh, Fradswell, Milwich, Stone and, by 1840 onwards, Macclesfield, start appearing in the family tree.

It seems too much coincidence got a name of someone same name - Henry George Atkin who is right age to be his grandfather buried in Stowe by Chortley but looks like came from Abbots Bromley ... all quite nearby
Hello Jean,
Thanks for posting a message.
My name is Paul Lawrence Atkin, currently living in Japan. I am the 2nd son of Fred & Peggy Atkin nee Rickard. Coincidentally I just returned from a visit to the UK where I visited York and spoke to my Uncle Bob (Robert) and Aunt Nora (now 86 years old). My uncle suggested my Grandmother's name was Ginny (not Jennifer as I had previously thought) Mereweather (or Merriweather - not sure) so it seems you are correct. The name Ginny may have been a nickname based on Jane?

Can I ask which line are you from?

Of the 7 children Lawrence & Jane / Ginny had,
Madge is still living in York, though I was unable to meet her this time.
Nora is still living married to Bob Bolton (still living)
Ernest died in WWII, possibly in Anzio, Italy
Lawrence died about 15-20 years ago, was living in Dromfield
Sydney died about 15-20 years ago, was living in York
Fred (my father) died in Sept 2006 aged 78
Robert is still living in York, married to Thora - no children.

Incidentally, I just started a tree on Genes Reunited

My family are not actually from your area but from Leeds, more specifically Arnley, so may have links. My dad was Alfred Atkin (born 1920, second son of George and Carrie Atkin. Oldest son was George, youngest son Jack. I am looking to find Jacks family who I met only once. My mum is also now dead and like all of us I asked too few questions! My uncle Jack was a bus driver and his son was called Paul. I dont remember the name of his daughter. I know he died a few years ago. I think his wifes name was Jean, but my family hardly ever saw or were in contact with Jacks. I would just like to contact them if I can, as I have always been in contact with the oldest brother George's daughter Sheila, and via her had news of her brother. I didnt have any other relations on my fathers side so would love to hear from any contacts.

My links are with Moor Farm, Lower Leigh.
I do not have an identified link with Eccleshall yet from my search. Beware, there are two "Atkin" families presently living in the L.Leigh area; one is unconnected and originates from Market Drayton in Shropshire. I have spoken to a Don Atkin, farmer, and his family in the locality who are unrelated.
I have also spoken to a Mrs Atkin who married into the family by marrying a George A. who was the son of Ron Atkin, one of David's sons. She is now a widow in her 80's

Kath, still waiting for you to contact me again. I have established that there are other family members around Lower Leigh. G. grandfather David was apparently the son of George A. and Elisabeth --- his wife. George, apparently was connected with "stagecoaches" - perhaps a publican in Doveridge linked to changing horses, etc on coaches using what is now the A50. I am told that he set all his sons up in a different "trade" which is why our g.g. was a tailor.David married the wife of the proprietor of the Butcher's Arms"; she died shortly after this event; and he then proceeded to marry her daughter who is our g.grandmother. In the process he inherited 10 acres of land which appears to be the start of the farming interest. One of his sons, Reg inherited the farm. Other sons, Sid and Ron moved to farm in Hilderstone nearby.
I have an interesting obituary report from the local paper re Sid's funeral in 1908 which sheds more light on the subject. Reg never married, neither did a daughter, Margaret.
G.g. David and M. had a son Russell who died aged 6 years (don't be fooled by a census entry for "Mussell"in the 1861/71 return ( i haven't got the appropriate ref. in front of me at this moment, so going from memory)
Emma Jean Atkin
ATKIN, Emma Jean (81), passed away at home in Arcadia, California on February 28, 2008. A remarkable woman; accomplished artist, community leader, professional, and an amazing homemaker. Her family was her life around which all other aspirations were made to fit. She met each day, engaged, and with a resolve and a commitment that left us wondering how she could do it all.
She never missed sending cards or remembering important events.
Her family, her friends and her
adopted extended family were so loved by her. They knew, absolutely, that someone always cared about and loved them unconditionally."
Her strength and courage, her love, compassion and friendship have been shared with so many during her lifetime. A lot could be said about her professional and community accomplishments, and they are many, but it was her uncanny way of being so real, of connecting and sharing, of being a wife,
being mom, grandma, great grandma, Aunt Jean, and just being Jean that was her most beloved legacy.
Born and raised in the Midwest, Jean moved to California in 1953 with her husband and their young family.
Wilmington and Carson, California were home for the next 20 years where she and Willard raised their three girls.
In 1976 Jean and Will moved to Lake of The Woods in the mountains that they both loved.
There she worked for, and later retired from, the Kern County Sheriff's Department. For 25 years
this was her home until moving to Sierra Madre in 1996 where for seven years she brought the Pinny House to life. They moved to Arcadia in 2003.
Though she will be profoundly missed, we will continue to love her and carry her in our hearts always. She rests in peace and love. Jean is survived by Willard, her husband of 61 years; her children Carolyn (Lloyd) Gardner, Shirley (Claude) Farris, and Kathay (David) Edmondson;
her grandchildren Jill (Zack) Sweaney,
Joanna Gardner,
Matthew Woolsey, Sean (Vanessa) Clouser,
Brian Farris; great-grandsons Mitchell, Tanner
and Cody and great-granddaughter Savannah.
