Stephanie, My grandfather, Alfred Walter Atkins, b. 1860, Mason Co. Illinois; son of: William Atkins m. to Rebecca ?, was also very tall. My father was 6' 2", the shortest of his brother. His sisters, with one exception, were 6'. The Atkins are so hard to track, maybe there is a connection through this height trait. Will all those with Atkins ancesters over six feet tall please respond.

Hi Rosamond. I am glad to see that lovely name is being brought forward and kept alive in the generations that followed this very brave woman. Who was your father? I am hearing a lot from the family of Samuel and Rosamond. One family member is going to be in contact with me soon. He has done extensive research and even have a picture of Samuel. I would love to see that.

Re: Baylis Atkins in Hall County, Georgia

Berryman Hutchins "Hutch" Atkins (of Rabun County) who, according to family history, was mayor of Tallulah Falls in the 1880's. Hutch and his brother, Baylus (or Baylis) Franklin Atkins, joined the Confederate army in Rabun County in 1861 and were members of the Rabun Gap Riflemen, Company E, 24th Regiment, Confederate States of America. Hutch was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and returned home to Rabun County to heal in late 1864. He went AWOL from the Confederate Army and refused to return to a war he found to be "unjust". Family legend has it that the Confederate army sent Uncle Baylus (who was paroled from a prisoner of war camp after being permanently disabled in the Battle of Spotsylvania and was sent home to Rabun County) to capture Grandpa Hutch and to bring him back to the army dead or alive. Grandpa Hutch Atkins apparently stayed hidden from his brother long enough for the war to end; in any case, he was never sent back to the army.
Baylis was my Great, Great Great Uncle. I hope this helps. Feel free to email me at djustus255@windstream.net

Hi I am late to the discussion. I have a tree called Boyne/McGinnis/Boyd/Cummiskey. I have all of the Atkins and Montgomery family there. Also, if anyone is interested in Rosamond and her life look up Margaret Montgomery on the internet. She has wittemed "Rosamond's Story" which covers living in England and coming to America, the Diamond Mine Disaster and her marriage to Thomas Montgomery My great Aunt Annie married Rosamonds son. In the book you will find Obituares of all the Atkins and their lives.

YES, THE BIBLE FINALLY HAS A HOME. I HAD GIVEN IT TO A LINDA BLACK FROM GEORGIA. HER HUSBAND WAS THE ATKINS, AND 3 OF THE NAMES MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE WERE IN HIS FAMILY TREE. BUT AFTER SHE DID MORE RESEARCH, SHE REALIZED IT WASN'T HIS FAMILY, SO NOW SHE SAYS THAT SHE FOUND THE RIGHTFUL OWNER. I HAD THAT BIBLE SINCE 1960, AND NEVER COULD FIND SOMEONE TO LAY CLAIM TO IT. IT WAS FROM 1850, AND IT WAS OLD. I MISS READING FROM IT, BUT IT'S WITH THE RIGHTFUL FAMILY.

Hi Stephanie:
I've been away from my research on my Atkins branch for some time, since I had run into a brick wall. However, I now see a ray of hope in your post. You refer to William Avery Atkins. He (Uncle Billy, as we called him) was one of five children of George Wells Atkins and Adelaide Gallup Atkins.....Grace A. Atkins, George Frank Atkins, Florence Gallup Atkins, William Avery Atkins, and Lillian Wells Atkins (my grandmother). So I am a little confused that you show him as the son of Elias C. Atkins. I know he (George Wells Atkins) was a part of that family, but I haven't been able to make a valid and sourced connection. All your other info on Uncle Billy is correct as far as his son, Coleman, his wife, Suemma, etc. etc. (He was married 2 other times after Suemma).
Any clarification on how you have him as the son of Elias C. Atkins would be MUCH appreciated, and ANY and ALL information you might have on George Wells Atkins would be a gold mine for me!
I have been able to trace so many other branches of my tree back many generations, and it is ironic that it was George Wells Atkins wife, Adelaide Gallup, that was my "ticket" into the Colonial Dames, DAR, etc. But her husband? - brick wall.
Thanks so much!! And if you are interested, I'b be happy to share the Atkins photos that I have.
Bitsy Taggart Fitzsimmons

Glad to hear you're back up and running Ollie. Wish you would upload a gedcom to the website and share what you have though! I would love to compare findings. Kim is right. I cant find anything conclusive about Thomas either although the puzzle pieces do fit nicely. I have been back and forth to KW and Essex courthouses several times and still cannot find anything new on the Eubanks and Atkins other than what we already have. Also, if either of you could help with the connection between the Atkins line out of Surry and Isle of Wight to the Atkins from KW,K&Q and Essex I would really appreciate it. I know there is a link somewhere but its been very elusive to me. I have a marriage in my Atkins line to the other in the early 1900's but that's it so far!

Absalom W. b abt 1800 d. abt 1869 Married Sarah 'Sally' Ann Eubank b. 5/17/1809 d. abt 1880.

We believe that the Thomas Eubank who is listed in the family bible as having died in 1831 is her father, but we haven't proven it definitively yet. Sally Ann was the sister of my 4th great grandfather, William Trice Eubank.

They had 7 known childrenwho can be found starting in the 1850 KW Co Va census:
Absolom W Atkins is listed in the 1830 Caroline Co Va census on pg 174 with Sally and 1 son under 5. Absolem and Sally are listed in the 1840 KW Co Va census on pg 58 with 1 son 5-10, 1 son 10-15 and 2 daughters 5-10. Absalom and Sally are listed in the 1850 KW Co Va census on pg 250b and 251a. A. W. and Sally are listed in the 1860 KW Co Va census on pg 567. Sally Eubank Atkins is a widow listed as Sarah A Atkins in the 1870 KW Co Va census on pg 119b with daughters Bettie Johnson, Lucy Houston, son-in-law Milton Houston and their children. Sallie is listed in the 1880 KW Co Va census on pg 56b.

How do you connect?

Kim Wrenn
Durham NC

I have no information any Wallers in the Atkins line. However, my 2nd great-grandfather, Jonathan Atkins of Clay County, MO, named one of his sons Fountain Waller Atkins after his neighbor, Fountain Waller. I do not know of any relationship between Jonathan Atkins and Fountain Waller, but since you asked, I now wonder if they could have been cousins. Fountain Waller was born on 22 Nov 1798 in Fauquier County, VA, to Lewis and Elizabeth Waller. He married Eliza J. Bower, who died on 23 Oct 1849. Fountain died on 27 Apr 1885. The Wallers moved from VA to KY in 1831, then to Clay County, MO, in 1835. Jonathan Atkins' father, John, moved from King & Queen County, VA, to Woodford County, KY, in 1808, then to Clay County, MO, in 1825.

I agree! But the one lady I spoke to is very old and so was the Bible she had. I assume it was handed down to the next generation at her passing and hopefully they will show more interest in their lineage and sharing. Do you have any info on any Waller's in the Atkins line from the King William or Essex area's?

Rick, you are on my tree as a guest and several of us have searched in vain for those records. They were appearently destroyed with many others here in VA from the war and many fires. If I or another member working with me from my end finds anything I will forward that to you for you to have. There are a couple of people out there who claim to have it in old family bible records but were unwilling to share or make copies. So we keep digging!

Atkins - Eubanks

My earliest known Atkins ancestor is John Atkins, born 1772, probably in King & Queen County, VA. He moved in 1808 to Woodford County, KY, then on to Clay County, MO, dying there in 1849.

A reference "Generations Of The Barnes" says that John Atkins married Frances Eubanks. However, this reference does not say from where it obtained its information. An 1835 Clay County, MO, deed confirms that her first name was Frances.

It appears that several John Atkins lived in King and Queen County, VA, during the late 18th century. Which one married Frances Eubanks? My ancestor who moved to Missouri? Others say that the John Atkins who married Frances Eubanks stayed in King and Queen County, VA, dying there in 1830.

Does anyone know where I can find proof of a John Atkins - Frances Eubanks marriage, and which John Atkins married her?

Rick Ramey
It did; sorry, I've been tied up with the holidays. I suppose the best way to answer your questions is to find out who your grandfather was. Was it Ceola Atkins? You said he disappeared. Actually Gordon Atkins was the one who disappeared, literally. In fact, his wife disappeared 2 weeks after he did. Ceola moved to Hollywood, Florida and lived his life out there.

I am looking for information on the Atkins Family from Brooklodge, County Cork, Ireland. There was a Mary Atkins listed as being present at the birth of my grandfather, Timothy Lucy Sullivan, September 23, 1874 in Brooklodge. She also reported the birth to the Register. I am wondering if she could possibly be related to my family in some way.

I am just curious because it was weird you said something about him being named Osceola by the Indians and my great uncle said they thought he went to live on an Indian reserve or something. And another weird this is that Rosie Ceola mother around the same time that my grandfathers grandmother died. I am not sure the exact year I just knew it was after 1960 because my Grandfathers wife said that they went to visit his Grandmother in the nursing home when they first got together and that was 1960.

Ceola was my uncle and I am in contact with his daughters. His name was Ceola Baylis Atkins (he was named for the leader of the Seminole indians, Osceola.) He was born April 10, 1900 and died in Hollywood, Florida in Sept. 1974. In the Georgia 1910 and 1920 census records, he was living in Summerville, Ga. In 1930, I found him in Kensington, Walker, Georgia. I have a photo or two of him. I'll attach one here.

Well my grandfather was from the alpine Chattanooga area, he died in 1974 so I never knew him but from what I have heard his fathers name was osceola or something close to that but my grandfather never knew him they told my father when my grandfather was 3 months old they never heard from him again but Ceola is the only name I can find close to that. But I can't find anything on Baylis befor 1970
