Replying to my own post, I just want to clarify that it is the soldiers', minors', and dependent parents' pensions that are not being scanned at all at this time. FamilySearch did extend their contract to scan more than just the first 3,000 or so widows' pensions, but progress is slow and it will take many years for it to be complete.

Just to clear up a misconception, Footnote (now Fold3) does not have "about half" of the Civil War pensions online, and probably won't in our lifetime! They began scanning only the widow's pensions, and only about the first 3,000 or so. Thus, since FamilySearch's contract with NARA was only to do the first 3,000 or so, they used to have on that database that it was "41% complete", or something like that. In reality, there are 1,280,000 widows' pensions files from the Civil War; and many, many more soldiers' pensions, minors' pensions, and dependent parents' pensions; none of which they are scanning at all at this time. I know this because I do onsite research at NARA.

Keep in mind that the subscription services are always going to exaggerate about what they have. They are not ever going to tell you what they don't have. In most cases, thorough research still needs to be done the old-fashioned way.

Happy hunting!

Im just looking for my family, lol. My name is Michael, son of Blaine Lynne Greene, later he took his Father's last name Atkinson. He was born in Oronoco from what I have been told. He was born 8/6/33 died 7/31/87 In Oshkosh WI. His father was killed in an accident roughly around 1935. All I know about the Atkinson's is second hand stories. Im just searching for who I am I guess. I know we are related somehow to the Younger's of Minn. as well. Dolores Younger was a cousin of his. My grandmother was Ruth Greene but I do not know what my garndfathers name was. Any info would be greatly appreciated. From what Ive been told I am the only son of my fathers and Im tired of feeling like Im the last Atkinson from his bloodline, hopefully I will find out I do have more family. I can be reached by email at mikea1298@yahoo.com thank you for your time!

Charles D. Atkinson, b. 29 July, 1871 in Georgia. He married Georgia ?, b. c. 1862 in Georgia.
Census lists issue as:
George A. Atkinson, b. ATKINSON, who married a girl from North Carolina, Rebekah Catherine WILSON.
Sidbury-Atkinson-King Cemetery Relocation (Hampstead, NC)

For those who may be interested, there was an article in the Wilmington (NC) Star News this past week about the Sidbury-Atkinson-King Cemetery (where Vashti Sidbury Atkinson is buried and, purportedly, William Barlow Sidbury [her father]). The graves are primarily Atkinson and King descendents of Vashti and Amos Atkinson. There are at least two burials with only wooden markers in the cemetery. The owners have petitioned Pender County for approval to move the graves to another location. Here is a link to the article in the Star News: http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20120406/ARTICLES/1204... . Here is a link to the Find-a-grave site for the cemetery: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSln=at...; .

If anyone wants to comment on this, you can call John Clauser at (919) 839-0501. He is the cemetery archaeologist that is doing the research to support the relocation application.
They all come from Northern Ireland. Richard was banned from Scotland for not paying his taxes. They landed in Winchester but the wife returned with kids to Ireland about 1850. The son came back and landed in Frostburg, MD in the Late 1850's and was the Sheriff's. He hand 15 kids and two wifes. George Washington Atkinson is my husband's ggg grandfather. I guess they were a tall bunch as his Dad's family was tall. They were blonde and black haired. The Scottish has produced some red heads and some other issues.

I have the same question about Mariana Atkinson and Ygnacio Manzano. Is it the Mariana Atkinson who had a child named Maria Magdalena (died in 1936) who married Candelario Cantu? (Candelario and Mariana had three kids - Elodia, Stefana and Horacio). Because I cannot find any information on that.

It seems she might be the one... Getting married in 1897 sounds about right, but what ruins the game is the 1910 US census: it says that Mariana Atkinson is a widow, but what happened to Ygnacio Manzano? I see border passess with his name from 1920s and 1931 and one of the sates his wife's name as Mariana Atkinson - so the quiestions are if we are talking about the same Ygnacio Manzano and Mariana Atkinson here. Any suggestions would be more than welcome!

Responding to your post of Jan. 2011-My name is Cecilia Flores; Mariana Atkinson was my grandmother and she was married to Santiago Flores in 1900.I was born and raised in Olmito, Texas. My father was Rogerio A.Flores and my mother was Consuelo Villarreal.Grandmother Mariana lived about a mile away from us and she lived with her daughter,Rosa Flores Hernandez.Grandmother became a widow about 1910.My grandparents had 5 children:Santiago,Rogerio,Rosa,Maria, and Margarita.Researching the family history: My grandmother's uncle was Francisco Cisneros Atkinson and he also had a daughter-Mariana(this Mariana is the one who was Ignacio Manzano's wife.(cbflores@q.com)

The John Atkinson, age 16 in 1910, that you write of is my grandfather. His father was Colon Atkinson of Wayne Co., MS. I have been searching for the identity of his mother for several years.

I visited Waynesboro, MS, where many of the family resided, and met a lady over 100 years old who knew my grandparents and great grandparents. She told me that Colon did not believe that John was his child and refused to raise him. She also told me that John came to Waynesboro in late 1910 to find his father and confront him. She said that Colon apologized to him as he obviously recognized him as his son. I don't know whether or not this is true, but it is waht I was told.

John Atkinson settled in Waynesboro and married my grandmother Annie Elizabeth Covington. They had one child, a son, Colon W. Atkinson, born in 1920, my late father, who passed away in late 1981.

I had found John in the census you mention but could never find a family connection. I wondered if it was his maternal grandparents, but could never find him in an earlier census
to place him with a maternal figure.

If you have any suggestions as to who his mother might have been or a family connection, please feel free to contact me. My e-mail is internetnoodle@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Atkinson Fowler

What is the source for your information that Elizabeth remarried in 1834? Is it possible that a different "Elizabeth Atkinson" was married that year?

I have found no record that Johnson Atkinson remarried after 1833, and he had seven children after that date.

I have some very old etchings of the Henry VII Chapel, Westminister Abbey by "M.B. Atkinson" I cannot find any reference to a MB Atkinson. There is Margaret Beaufort but I don't know if she ever added Atkinson to any part of her name and she did work with an Atkinson. I am trying to find out about the artist and any history on my print. If anyone knows about this, please let me know. I know the etchings are probably 1800s and were passed on from my grandmother.

hi Jane
I don't think we are talking about the same John and Mary. There are 3 possible John & Mary Atkinsons in the area, 1 in Gainsbro, 1 in Bole and now 1 in Tuxford. The J & M i'm claiming are the Gainsbro ones. Unsure where John was born but Mary was born in Retford 22 April 1807. They had 5 Children Ellen and Sarah (twins) 1830, James 1832, William, 1834 and George William 1838. These were all born in Gainsbro.
The whole family went to live in the USA via Canada thanks to a legacy left to Mary in her sister's Will. Hope this helps you sort out who is who. If you need any more info let me know.
Denise

If i am remembering correctly there were 2 John and Mary Atkinsons' in the Gainsborough area at the same time both with a son named George. Since I made that message I have found out that my John Atkinson who married Mary Hurst at the All Saints Church in Gainsborough in 1829 was born around Feb 1807 in Gainsborough not Bole. his parents are most likely John Atkinson who married Sarah Hunt in 1804 at the same All Saints Church in Gainsborough. John and Mary (Hurst) Atkinson had 5 children I am aware of all born in Gainsborough - twins Sarah and Ellen born Dec 1829, James born May 1832, William b. July 1834, and my ancester George W(illiam) b. Nov 1837.

I have although the names of his children are the same I have him marrying Mary Ramsdall from Blyton in Lincolnshire not Mary Hurst. Two of John's sons ( Thomas, who is my Great great Grandfather and George his brother moved from Gainsborough to North Kelsey in Lincolnshire where Tom initially had the Railway Hotel and then became a corn merchant and farmer. George was a coal merchant. I have all the details of Thomas and George's decendants if you need them

Re: atkinson family

Maria, My maiden name is Cecilia Flores, I grew up in Olmito,Texas just north of Brownsville. My dad Rogerio Atkinson Flores(son of Santiago Flores and Mariana Atkinson (Dau of Antonio Atkinson and Elena Cisneros Chapa)
From family history and a Family tree- we see that George Atkinson and two bros.,James and Thomas came to America in 1836 from Lancashire,England. James decided to go to Canada; Thomas stayed in Virginia, and George went on to Bagdad,in Tamaulipas,Mexico.
In 1839 George married Maria Ana Cisneros(Hinojosa, on her mother's side.) They had the following children: Francisco1842;Delfina1844;Antonio1847. Maria Ana died in 1859 and George married Dolores Aguilar in 1860.(George,Dolores, and Antonio are listed in the 1860 US Census and Antonio is listed as being 12 years old. By then their family had grown and they had Eduardo and Victoria and a new baby(Thomas). In 1867, a hurricane, tidal wave, and a tornado hit Clarksville(where George's family lived. Dolores,Eduardo, and Victoria drowned in that storm.)
George and his son ,Thomas, survived and went to live with his son Antonio and his family who had bought a Ranch near Rio Hondo, Texas. Antonio and his wife Elena went on to have 16 children(my grandmother-Mariana was their first-born child). I have researched a lot of the Atkinsons and also met Justo Atkinson who used to live at la Burrita(now lives in Brownsville.)He gave me a lot of information on the family. I have a list of many of the Atkinsons' families. From info given to me: Francisco married Albina Salinas and had about ten children. They raised their family in Matamoros.Delfina married Baltazar Cisneros and also raised their family in Matamoros. My grandmother Mariana lived about a mile away from us and she passed away in 1952. Do you know Paul Manzano? He lives in Corpus and also is into family history. Francisco's daughter,Mariana, married Ignacio Manzano so she was related to Paul and his family. Do you have a family tree? I am trying to find out about George's family back in England but haven't made a connection yet. Would like some input from you. Thank you.
I live in Colorado.
