Yes, it was on the marriage bond but as I said I am not sure whether or not I was looking at the original bond or at the transcript. The bonds that I saw also had consent forms attached to them that were signed by the parents, and I am sure that was the case here.

I am not for sure whether I obtained a copy of the bond or whether I just looked at it and transcribed it, but I am sure that you can get a copy at the Mercer county, KY court house. I obtained copies of a lot of bonds while I was there that day. Will have to check to see if I copied that one. I may have just written down the info.

Atons of Pennsylvania

Hi, I am researching some ATONS out of Pennsylvania for one of my best friends nephew...I am in a hurry to get whatever info I can get as he is being deployed to the middle east soon and was asking for it. These ATONS that I have tracked down (so far)are as follows:
John Lawrence ATON 1936-2002 (NM) md to Burdye K HAINLEY (living); son of John Elias ATON 1908-1974 md to Myfanry (or Myfanwy) WILLIAMS 1904-1962; son of Edward ATON and Eva COOK. I think Edward may be the son of Nathaniel Elias ATON but cant find anything to prove it. (There is one of these families that spelled their last name ATEN). These Atons were primarily from the Northeastern part of PA. Any and all help would be appreciated...it's the least I can do for this young man! (Also I did see a post with these some of the same people from back in early 2000 - it was from this young man's father Mike which is my friends brother so I have as much info as they have.)

Just thought that someone on this board might like to know that Phoebe who married Henry Aton was an Owens. "Febe Owens" married Henry Aton on 25 Jan 1792 in Mercer Co., KY. Bondsman: Robert Lawrence. Parents John and mary Owens. Teste: Joseph Lawrence.

I found this while searching for information regarding a Mary Butler who married Thomas Owens (bondsman also Robert Lawrence) in 1793 in Mercer. I do not personally know any of the family in this line, but i happen to live in Saint Louis. I have other family buried in Calvary Cemetery and in Spring I will have to go in search of the Atons buried there as well. I just returned from Lowes and Mayfield yesterday and visited the cemeteries in that area as well.

To add to the posts on this subject, the ATON surname is spelled many different ways: ATEN,AUTEN, AUTON,ATON,ATTEN, AUTER,OTTER,some EATON, & there are still other variations. The first Aten Adrian Hendrickse Aten is believed to have come in 1650 from The Netherlands. Some people changed the spelling to Auten so that the correct Dutch pronunciation would be used. We have Adrian Hendrickse Aten's will posted, it was written in NY, but we also have a copy of it written in Dutch. See
http://freepages.geneaology.rootsweb.com/~aten
Karen Aten Hillman

ATON in Kentucky Probably from NJ(Aten, Auten)

Hello,
I am researching the Aton/Aton/Autens with another large group. We have all been working together to connect all of the branches. We have been posting the work of Mamie McKinney, a researcher of 20 years, on our web site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~aten. We are currently doing DNA research and have been able to connect several lines that have no paper trail by DNA matches. We have access to free kits, so if anyone if intetested, please contact me, has to be a male descendant with the Aten/Aton surname. Only junk DNA is tested, nothing medical.
Our theory is that Henry Aton is from NJ. There is a Richard Auten who was born in NJ and married Johanna Petrus Quick. He was older when they were married, so we think he may have had children with a first wife. When he died Johanna remarried to a Unknown Martin and moved to Mason County Kentucky. In 1810 census in Adair County is Henry Aton. In the 1820 census you find Isaac, Jacob and D Auton in Mason County. They may all be related and from NJ and from this Richard Auton branch of Atens. If anyone has information on these lines, please contact me. There is alot of information in these posts on Henry & his children, and we are very excited to find this!
Thank you, Karen Aten Hillman

Richard Auten was born 1742 in NJ. He married Johanna Petrus Quick in 1778 and had 3 daughters. When he died, she remarried Unknown Martin & moved to Kentucky. Our theory is that Richard was older when he married Johanna, and that he may have had children with a first wife who ended up moving to Kentucky with Johanna. There are several who might fit,Henry Aton is there in 1810, & then there is Isaac Auton, Jacob Auton, & D Auton. If anyone has additional information on Isaac, Jacob or D Auten please let us know. It seems like there is much data on Henry and his family. Thank you, KAren Aten Hilman

Hi Katherine,
There is a group of us who have done quite a bit of Aten research. The name can be spelled several different ways, including Auten, Auton too. When was Chloe born, and was she born in Missouri?
Thanks, Karen Aten Hillman

Hi Kathy,
There is a group of Aten researchers who have been compiling census records. We have studied this Kentucky group of Aton's, but we never saw this group of posts on Ancestry before. We suspect that a Richard Auten who was born in 1742 in NJ and was married to Johanna Petrus Quick might be the parents of the Aton's in Kentucky. Johanna remarried to a Unknown Martin, and settled in Kentucky. If you look at the census, you see Henry Aton, but you also see Auton's. There is more information about some of these lines on our website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~aten We are continuing to look for a way to link them back via a paper trail, or a DNA trail. See our website for information on the study that is being done and contact me if you have any questions or interest in it. We are looking for males with the ATON surname. Thanks!
We have been able to do DNA testing to prove several of the Aten lines who are not connected through a paper trail, are related to the original Aten Adrian Hendrickse Aten who came to the USA in 1650. The tests are free, and they do not test anything medical, only junk DNA. Please see our website for information about this. It is a simple cheek swab with a Qtip. We have one volunteer from Paul ATON's line and are waiting for the results now. Anyone from these Kentucky/Indiana Aton's who would like to be tested can contact me for information.

Thank you, Karen Aten Hillman

Hello Charles,
I saw your reference to Alanson Aton in Hunterdon NJ and wondered what information you have on him. I am part of a group of Aten researchers (one of the other spellings. There was a woman named Mamie McKinney who had done 20 years of research on the Atens before she died. We have been posting all of the information she collected on a web site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~aten One of the lines we have not been able to connect into the main file is the one with the ATON spelling. There is a Lant (Alant, Alanson) and Paul who used that spelling. We think they were brothers. They both ended up in the Wyoming, Luzerne and Lackawanna County PA area. Paul was married in Sussex County NJ, & both men were born in NJ, so we always thought they might be from a particular line that was located in Sussex County which later became Warren County NJ. Out of room, will continue. Karen Aten Hillman

Henry Aton can be found in Indiana census in the years
1830, Washington County
1840, Monroe Twp, Washington County
1850, Monroe Twp, Washington County
1860., Driftwood Twp., Jackson County

He married Ann E. Warriner on 14 Feb 1821 in Adair Co., KY
Henry was born about 1799 in KY, Ann was born about 1796 in Virginia
From census records their children were:

Elizabeth b. abt 1824 in KY
William E. b. abt 1828 in IN
Stephen b. abt 1830 in IN
Melissa Ann b. abt 1832 in IN
Parthena b. abt 1834 in IN
Mary b. abt 1836 in IN
Nelson b. abt 1839 in IN

There is also a Margaret Ann Aton who is a possible daughter. They had one other daughter on the 1830 census, and a Margaret Ann Aton married John J. McClelland on 31 Jan 1838 in Washington Co., IN. I have guessed that perhaps this was the older daughter from the 1830 census. She was born abt 1822 in KY.

Elizabeth Aton m. John Borden on 15 Jan 1845 in Jackson Co., IN. By 1850 she was living with her parents again along with two small children and was apparently pregnant, because by 1860 there was a John Borden who was 10 years old and hadn't been on the 1850 census.

Elizabeth Aton and John Borden's children:
Mary A. b. abt 1847
William H. b. abt 1849
John b. abt 1850

Elizabeth married second Martin Pulsh or Pulch on 3 Jul 1855. On the marriage records his name is spelled Pulsh. On the 1860 census it is Pulch. Martin was born abt 1803 in Hannover. Children of Elizabeth Aton and Martin Pulch
Peter b. abt 1856
Marion b. abt 1858

This is all I have on this family, but I hope it helps you. I was researching them because in 1850 my gg-grandmother, Jane Boling, was living in their home. She was 12 years old. I was trying to discover if she could have been a grandchild, but have since decided she wasn't.

Linda

aton in old english i believe means "a manor" or "a homestead". the surname comes from a place originally called "aton" now "ayton" or more specifically "great Ayton" / "east ayton" etc in pickering lythe yorkshire, north of england. The first records of "aton's" there was around 1069 (normans and landed gentry - barons and lords). variations of the surname probably include "aton" "atton" (mine) and "ayton" - variations being due to more literacy of people keeping church records etc in times gone by. also as the "atons" eventually left yorkshire and moved north to scotland, across to ireland and down south in the middle plus ages (1300 plus) the spelling altered as pronunication and again local literacy altered. hope this helps! look up "ayton" "yorkshire" "england" on the internet if you want to find modern photos / write ups of this place

Hi Anthony,

You've been given some good advice. I've spent years working on the Aton family tree, and probably have the largest online database here: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=maude21
Much of my info comes from the hard work of cousin Leslie (to protect her identity).

In addition to Egyptology<smile>, if you google the name you'll come up with a lot of cool stuff from medieval Britain: knights, barons, etc. My father told me that the original tribe came over with William the Conquerer and were granted land by him.

The challenge is connecting the American Atons with the lords of yore. Most people searching online are descendants of John Aton b1801. There was an immigrant in 1678 but no one I know has made a connection to him.

Happy hunting!
Anna-lee

Robert ATON from California in about 1985

Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me, and in return, I can help them. My grandmother, Candace was married to a Bob Aton for the longest time when I was a child (he was not my mother's father). They owned Trimmer Marina on a lake somewhere near Fresno, CA. Then they owned Aton Construction in Dinuba, CA (I remember helping my grandpa put spackling stuff in the nail holes of drywall and got a $10 check from Aton Construction for helping out)Well, I guess they divorced around 1984 or 85, I think, and that was the last I heard of him. We moved to Southern California and Grandma never talked about him again.
The reason I'm trying to find him or relatives is this: When cleaning out my grandmother's apartment after she passed away, I came upon a HUGE American flag and some sort of handkerchief. I kept it, assuming it had something to do with her family. But, I can't find any relationship to it anywhere. I'm thinking maybe it belonged to my Grandpa Aton's family. The American flag is too large to have been draped over a coffin and I think it only has 48 stars and is made of heavy wool. The handkerchief has images on it of several naval ships (ie: USS Alabama, USS Chester, USS Mississippi, etc.) and writing on it that states "League Island Navy Yard, Philadelphia" and "Our Reserve Fleet ~Navy Yard, Phila.Pa."
Please if this sounds like something that belongs to your family, I'd love to be able to return it. Please contact me.

"Among the early settlers who died within a few years after they settled in the county, were… Will, Anderson and Stephen O. Aton." This reference would have been pre-1825, and I haven't been able to link these guys to anyone.

Well, I did a little digging in the census data and found a Burr Aton, but he's way too young to be your "Burr". But there might be a family tie. Try this... Burr Aton was born about 1853 in Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas J. and Mariam Aton (they later moved to Missouri). I think Thomas J. (born about 1828 in Indiana) may be the son of Henry and Anna Aton (but Thomas is too old for the 1850 census that started listing family members, so I don't know for sure). Also, I think that Henry, mentioned above, was the son of Henry Aton who is listed in the 1810 census of Adair County Kentucky-- his age was listed as over 45. So this Henry, once of Adair County Kentucky, is probably the Henry Aton that your probate records refer to. Or at least he's the right age. I have no idea who Phebe Aton and Burr Bradley are.
I swear, I'm going to create a database of every Aton in every census pre-1900 to see if I can make family connections. It would have been easier if they weren't such nomads. They moved all over the midwest. Pioneers, I guess.
Nancy
