Hi
My Attfields come from surrey and the surrounding area.

Looked at your note and was wondering if your Leslie Percy Attfield was Percy Frederick Attfield a foster son to John Albert Wallis (b 1861) they lived at Maidstone rd, Paddock Wood in the 1911 census.
This Attfield was originally born in Ilford Essex.

Do you know who were the witnesses on their marriage cert (Attfield Leslie P married Jeffery Ada L, Ilford Essex 1943 Apr-may-june Vol 4a p821) as they sometimes give leads into the married persons life.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Nick

My maternal grandmother was Alice Lucy Attfield.

I am in the US and cannot access records in England other than by the internet. My mother and her siblings are now deceased, so other than cousins in England (many I do not know), I don't have much family history that has been passed down to me.

Place names I've heard Mum mention are: Surrey, Guilford, Aldershot, and Farnham.

Anyway, this is what I have---but would like to have documentation and further information.

My mother: Margaret Kathleen Alden (b:1920 d: 1996)

Her parents: Thomas Frederick Alden (1878-1959)
Alice Lucy Attfield (1881-1946)

Alice's parents: Thomas Attfield (1848-?)
Caroline Binnstead or Benstead? (1859-1916?)

Is any of this familiar to you?

I could share other info if you'd like to email me...
ozarkat "at" mac.com ---remove spaces and " ", insert @

Trying to research my grandfather Leslie Percy Attfield he was born in 1905 and died in 1984. He married Ada Lillian Jeffery. All I know is his mother's name was Annie Attfield and she gave him up for adoption. So tracing his family has been really hard. There is no record of his father on his birth certificate. Any help would be apperciated.

Thank you
Leigh from Ontario, Canada

Attfields from Berks,Surrey and Egham

- Robert George Thomas Frederick Attfield, b. 21.5.1913
- Harold Edgar White Attfield, b. 16.11.1920
- Albert Edward Attfield, b. 30.3.1923
- Florence Emily Rosina Attfield, b. 7.6.1927

The mother of all these children was Ethel May Attfield, living at 20
Red Lion Road, Tolworth. We can identify her from the 1911 census - see
the attached page which shows Ethel May living with her parents Thomas &
Caroline Attfield.

Only one of the birth certificates names a father: "George Attfield,
coal porter" on Florence's certificate. I cannot find any such person,
but would assume that he and "Frederick George Attfield, coal merchant"
(on Albert Edward's marriage certificate) are actually the same person
but with a different surname. Presumably Ethel May was living in a
long-term relationship with him, but we may need to wait for the 1921
census before we can identify him!

Ethel May Attfield never officially married. She was born at Putney in
1888 and died in the "Surrey Mid E" registration district (which
includes Tolworth) in 1958, aged 70. Her death certificate might be helpful.

Her parents were Thomas Attfield (born c.1848 at Winkfield, died 1918 at
Kingston) and Caroline Benstead (born 1858 at Ripley, died 1916 at
Kingston). They married in 1877 and had at least six children: Edward
William (1879), Alice Lucy (1881), Thomas (1882), Ethel May (1888),
Harold Edgar (1890, who was killed in action in Greece in 1917), and
Maud Elizabeth (1891).

Thomas's parents were Henry Attfield (born 1820 at Winkfield, died 1896)
amd Sophia Searle (1823-1848). They married at Winkfield in 1846 and
Thomas was their only child. In 1855, after Sophia's death, Henry
remarried Elizabeth Cripps (1833-1906) and they had at least 4 children.

Henry's parents were Edward Attfield (born c.1790 Winkfield, died 1855
at Winkfield) and Ann Morrison (c.1794-1852), who married in 1818 and
had at least 5 children.

Edward's parents were John Attfield (born c.1761 at Winkfield, died 1845
at Winkfield) and Sarah Jackman, who married at Winkfield in 1782 and
had at least 7 children.

John's parents were Joseph Attfield and Anne Gilbert, both born c.1723,
who married at Winkfield in 1748 and had at least 6 children.
Any of theses people connected to you then please get in touch as i would love to hear from you

I was able to obtain a copy of Sidney Robert Attfield's birth Certificate by contacting the registrar first in Canada for his mariage certificate to Ilene McKay and then the London England restistrar board for his birth certificate. If you want more info I could look up this copy and possibly scan my copy and forward it to you. My internet is problematic so I connot give you a time to do this and get it to you. I used these documents to enable me to live and work in London for year in 1988.
Sandra

For any Attfields or Atfields out there who are interested, please consider joining the "Attfield DNA Group" on Ancestry and - if possible - also taking a DNA test.

Some of us Attfields who did not know if we were related or not have taken DNA tests, and the results are very valuable and interesting.

If more Attfields/Atfields from different lines compare their DNA, we will get a much more complete picture of our origins. Please consider taking part!

Thank you,
John Attfield

Hi Helga,

Many thanks for your reply. If you haven't seen it already, please try to get hold of a copy of "Farnham, Buildings and People" by Nigel Temple (Phillimore, 1973, SBN 85033 029 7). This has a couple of paragraphs about the Elliotts, and even mentions "George Elliott (b 1829) junior and his wife Ellen (b 1830)". Various Attfields are also mentioned in the book.

Are you already in touch with my fellow Attfield researchers Roger White and Merion Burt? They are both directly related to Frederick Watmore Attfield & family (unlike me - my line comes from Windlesham). I think Roger and Merion would be very interested to hear from you.

My own Attfield tree is on my website: www.familytree.john-attfield.com. This includes a photo gallery, and I've been thinking of adding some Farnham Attfield pictures. Roger has offered some, and your picture of Alice & Co would fit very nicely, so yes, I would love a copy.

My email address is: contact@familytree.john-attfield.com. If you would like to send me yours, I'll also forward it to Roger and Merion.

All best wishes
John
Dear John,
Thank you so much for the information. Fredericks daughter Alice was my Great,Great Grandmother .. I have a photo of her with her sister Emma, Mother Eliza and ? Grandmother Ann Butt. I haven't any information about the older sister Ellen but will get on with the research on her (and any other siblings) thanks to you. I do remember Family stories about an uncle Elliott so it ties in wit that rather nicely. My research into Frederick Watmore revealed that he was the was a Licenced Victualler of the Bear and Ragged Staff in Wrecclesham, he became a Bankrupt following the death of Eliza. He then re-married a Mary knight in 1870 and went on to have two sons with her.
The photograph of alice etc .. is on my tree ... i hope it is of use to you, if you would like a copy of the original (uncut) please let me know.
Many Thanks again
Helga

Hi Helga,
Did you get any feedback on this? Your man is Frederick Watmore Attfield, baptised 23.8.1809 at Farnham, parents Richard Attfield & Elizabeth Watmore. They married on 23.11.1795 at Gosport, Hampshire. Fred married Eliza Turner at Farnham on 31.5.1829, and they had children Ellen (1829), Emma & Alice. Eliza died in 1865 and Fred in 1885. Ellen married George Elliott, a well-known Farnham blacksmith and agricultural machinery maker. I think Alice married Charles Frederick Crawte in 1875 and died in 1918. The Crawtes had at least 8 children.
All best wishes, John
Hi Susan,

I have Esther as baptised 16.3.1828 at St Lawrence, Chobham, daughter of Richard Attfield & Mary Elson. They married at Bisley on 3.12.1822 (name recorded as "Field"). Richard & Mary had 8 children (at least) baptised at Chobham, and another 3 at Bisley. Richard & Mary both died in 1866. Details can be found on the Bisley History website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~engsurry/bisley/

Mary Elson was bapt at Chobham on 11.8.1803, daughter of John Elson & Ann Reedy (married at Pirbright 22.11.1792).

Richard Attfield (or Field) was born c.1799 at Brentford, Middlesex, according to the censuses. I haven't found any birth or baptism record for him so he remains a mystery.

All best wishes
John

Hi there,
Sidney Robert descends from a William Attfield born c1789 at Woking, Surrey, who married Mary Hutson in 1813. He died in 1855 at Dalston, Middlesex. His grandson William John Attfield (1847-1917), Sidney Robert's grandad, emigrated to Canada as did several other family members at different times.
On his second marriage certificate (to Sukey Payne in 1850), William names his father as "James Attfield, carpenter, deceased", but I haven't been able to identify this James.
There were a lot of Attfield families in the area around Woking in the late 1700s - in Farnham, Windlesham, Chertsey, Guildford, etc - and your family is surely related to some of these but I can't tell you which ones :-(
All the best
John Attfield

Duane, I am your first cousin from Campbell River. Muriel and Cecil Sloat - my parents. I got the birth certificate of Grampa from the births/deaths/ records in England before I travelled to London England and worked there for a year. I should have taken the opportunity to follow up our family tree when there, but did not. I was able to live and work in England because my grandfather was born in England. On my arrival at custums they looked at my passport and said " Welcome to the U.K., stay as long as you like, do whatever you like." I couldn't believe it. A fantastic welcome to a place I had never been to before.
I have a copy of a family tree that Gerdine - Alfred's daughter - our first cousin- drew up. I can ask mom to get a copy to you, if you don't already have a copy.

Re: Edward Attfield born about 1842

Just seen this post. Edward is a bit of a mystery-man, but I can shed some light. He was born 26.9.1842 at Lower Tot Ease, Buxted, Sussex, and baptised 13.11.1842 at Buxted, as Edward Edwards Hatfield. Parents = Edward Edwards (labourer) & Ann Hatfield. I have his birth cert. Father bapt 28.1.1816 at Buxted, parents James Edwards & Mary. Ann prob. b.1821 at Hartfield, parents Mark Hatfield & Jane Neller. She married Zebedee Meads in 1850, and in 1861 young Edward was living with them as Edward Meads. At his marriage in 1863 he called himself Edward Attfield. First wife Sarah Jane Packham d.1881 and he re-married Ruth Rumary in 1884. Millions of kids from both marriages. Sons George & Percy farmed near Eastbourne and gave name to road called "Attfield Walk".
