Bev,

Would be interested in hearing from you re your grandmother, the village she lived in, and what year are we referring to?

My wife's father repeatedly informed her that there was Indian blood within the Atwood line. She is an Atwood, with physical Indian features and descendant of the Atwood line from Massachusetts. Her grandfather was Henry Atwood. Have a bit of information on Atwood family.

If you desire, contact me at klondiker1s@gmail.com if interested.

My Sofia Atwood was born in Indian Hollow (now Huntington) which was an Indian Village at the time. Would love to see the photo you're referencing!!
~Bev

Since there are Atwood's within my family line, I looked into your journey with directions given. What a surprise when I learned there was a Wood on the boat that came from England around 1607. What another surprise when I discovered my family name marrying into the family of the Atwood family in the 1600 and 1700s. What a wonderful surprise!

William Joseph Atwood

William J. Atwood served as a Louisiana Confederate Soldier, a private, in Company G, 28th (Gray's) Louisiana Infantry. He enlisted 14 May, 1862, at Monroe, Louisiana.

He married Elizabeth Barron, about 1855. They lived in Morice, Winn Parish, Louisiana on 10 August, 1860 [Census date, for that year].

William and Elizabeth's children:

1-Charles William Atwood born 1858, in Morice, Winn Parish, Louisiana. Married Sarah Pratt Bell.

2-John Wesley Atwood born 1860 in Morice, Winn Parish, Louisiana. Married 1) Fannie P. Crews 10 March, 1889 Rapides Parish, Louisiana. 2)Martha Bell 17 November, 1894 Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

3-Allen Dewitt Atwood born 1865 in Atlanta, Winn Parish, Louisiana and died 12 July, 1897, in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Charles Atwood was an under tutor at the probate He married Elizabeth Aletha Bell on 11 April, 1889, in Rapides Parish. She was born February, 1871 at Liberty, Bollinger County, Mississippi. [Re:1900 Census for Rapides Parish.] and died 19 January, 1918 in Rapides Parish.

Allen's Widow, Elizabeth and four children, were living with her brother in law, in 1900. She is listed as his sister, but she is actually his double sister-in-law. Their children were: 1-Della Eugena Atwood born July, 1890. 2-Minnie Leola Atwood born December, 1891. 3-William Albert Atwood born October, 1894. 4-Olive (Ollie) Henrietta Atwood born February, 1897.

Elizabeth Althea Bell Atwood married 2)Charles Stalter between 1900 and 1910. In 1910, they lived in Pineville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Ollie Atwood, her daughter age 13, was still at home. Children in household were Mary age 7, Martha age 4 and Francis A. son 8 months. All Stalters, which I assume were Charles and Elizabeth's children. This record states that she has birthed 8 children/ 7 are living.

4-Henry J. Atwood born October, 1867. Married Sarah Laurette Lee 24 May, 1893 Rapides Parish.

Children:
1-Albert Atwood March, 1894.
2-Julius Atwood March, 1895.
3-Julius Atwood November, 1895.
4-William Lee "Willie" Atwood November, 1897.
5-Eddy/Eddie Atwood born about 1901.
6-Elmer J. Atwood born 1903 and died 23 December, 1921 Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. [Re: Louisiana Death Certificates]

William married 2) Martha Ann unknown about 1868. In 1870, there lived with them a girl Nora Williams, age 9, who may have been Martha's daughter from a previous marriage.

In 1880, a daughter: L. O. Atwood age 7 months lived with William and Martha. I have no further data, for this girl, at this time.

I thought someone might be able to use some or all of this info.

Ethel

Hi all,

William Joseph Atwood was born about 1832, probably in Mississippi. The 1860 Census for St Morice, Winn Parish, states that the was born in Virginia. However, the two censuses [1870 and 1880] states that he was born in Mississippi. In the 1880 record, it states that his parents were also born in Mississippi. I haven't been successful in locating him, in 1850.

He married 1)Elizabeth Barron about 1857. She was born about 1838, in Pike County, MS. She is the mother of Charles William Atwood. She died between 1860-1870 and William married 2)Martha Ann born about 1842, in Louisiana.

In 1860, the family lived in St. Morice, Winn Parish, Louisiana and William was a farmer; in 1870, they lived in Atlanta, Winn Parish and Joseph was a minister and in 1880, they live in Natchitoches and W. D. was a preacher. I have accumulated quite a bit of info on this family and am willing to share. You may email me at ethel71360@yahoo.com

If anyone has any information on William's parents, that they care to share, I would appreciate it.

Hi, I am not Linda. She is a friend kindly letting me do some research on Ancestry. My deceased husband was descendant of Harman Atwood, 1 of 3 known brothers emigrating from England to the Boston area shortly before 1642 or so. I do not find the Atwoods you are discussing in my database, but it could be a branch I haven't researched. Have any of you traced your ancestors back to England? Try this website. Bradley Potts has a massive database on any Atwoods with quite accurate data. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
I live in Slidell, LA where I am a group leader for a local genealogy group. I found it very interesting that there were Atwoods living in this area.
Roberta R. Died June 27, 1972 in a flood in Corning, New York along with then wife Martha Estella Atwood (no relation).

His parents were John Atwood (1876-1927) and Carrie Draper (1886-1956).

I may have found Carrie's family buried in the same cemetery.
DRAPER, Deloris , Born 1942 , Died 1942
DRAPER, Edwin , Born 1856 , Died 1931
DRAPER, Fannie H. , Born 1868 , Died 1938
We're interested in any information about the Atwood family, specifically any information about a "Daniel M Atwood". We know little about him, besides that he lived in Albany, NY for quite some time and may have been born in Pennsylvania. He was married previously with children before marrying Fannie Smith. Their marriage produced my grandfather Edson Claire in 1932, and a daughter, Shirley. Fannie left with the children and that is where our information ends on the Atwood's. Any information would be very welcomed!

This is also part of my direct line, which is based out of Licking and Fairfield and Franklin Counties. Drop me a line or visit the site; tons of information there...

I do not have Edmund as the father of Peter. My notes indicated the following (though not proven by me)that Peter's father may also have been named Peter: From an online family tree: The word 'HOOLEY' (According to The Bourne Society-Local History Records Vol X1 from 1972 'A Coulsdon Lord Mayor and his House' by Una Broadbent) can be traced back at least as far as 1347 when 'Hooley House' was licensed by the king to Geffrey at Wode. However, a house at 'Holegh'-meaning 'the clearing by the hollow'- is first mentioned in 1203. The house together with 36 acres plus 4 acres of wood was leased by the Abbot of Chertsey, lord of the manor of Coulsdon, to one Peter de Wyckhurst. 'Hooley House' (later the 'Ashdown Park Hotel') was demolished in 1971.

The Atte Wode lineage can be traced back to about 1204 when Peter de Wyckhurst (an older form of the name Atte Wode) purchased 'Hooley House' from the Bertan Marten, the Abbot of Chertsey Abbey.

Chertsey Abbey, dedicated to St Peter, was a Benedictine monastery located at Chertsey in the English county of Surrey. It was founded by Saint Erkenwald, later Bishop of London, in 666 A.D and he became the first abbot. In the 9th century it was sacked by the Danes and refounded from Abingdon Abbey by King Edgar of England in 964. Most of north-west Surrey was granted to the abbey by King Frithuwald of Surrey. In the eleventh century the monks engineered the Abbey River as an offshoot of the River Thames to supply power to the abbey's watermill. In late medieval times, the Abbey became famous as the burial place of King Henry VI (whose body was later transferred to St George's Chapel, Windsor). The abbey was dissolved by the commissioners of King Henry VIII in 1537 but the community moved to Bisham.

There is a lot of bad information online; here on ancestry.com some of that data has made its way on to One World Tree.
As for me, I don't trust any data where no evidence is cited.
As you probably already know the earliest record for Peter de Wyck Hurst is a property deed for the 40 acre purchase from the Abbot of Chertsey.
His ancestry is not yet known. It would be worth checking.

Re: De Wyckhurst --Atte Wode-Atwood Line of Descendancy

Hi. My name is William (Bill) Attwood. Like most researchers I have come to a halt with De Wyckhurst of Hooley House. I have a theory about why this is so. I wonder if it is possible for the family name to have evolved as follows. Attwood was Atte Wode, was De Wyckhurst, was DuBois. I am thinking that maybe DuBois came from France with William The Conqueror at Hastings. The time frame would more or less fit. One of the DuBois clan may have decided to Anglicise his name and became De Wyckhurst and then Atte Wode. This would also explain why some one who apparently came from nowhere and was able to attain status and land. Perhaps rewarded by his Norman cronies? Please understand that this onlyn my theory and may not be any where close to the truth. It would however explain much.
What are your thoughts?
Regards,
Bill.

de Wyckhurst, DuBois, abt 1130 to 1200. Attwood family research

For anyone out there researching the Attwood family.
My search seems to come to an end with deWyckhurst at abt 1200. i am wondering about the possibility of a name change. Maybe, just maybe de Wyckhurst is an Anglicised version of DuBois? If this were so it would explain why a seemingly unconnected family popped up out of no where. DuBois would appear to be fairly well connected, it was not long after the Norman invasion and de Wyckhurst pops up out of nowhere with some substance. What would be the chances?
What if the DuBois family had Hooley House (or other holdings) as a gift from the Norman heirachy. When de Wyckhurst inherited Hooley House he decided to Anglicise his name from DuBois to de Wyckhurst? Possible? Probable? I don't know. Maybe some one out 'there' has some information or would like to comment?

Wow! I'm very excited to hear you may have an original copy of this manuscript....or at least, a "different" copy.

As I believe I mentioned, I have seen a variety of versions, some with that I'd guess are transcription issues, so I'm desperately interested in tracking down the source. Sounds like your copy might be a big help.

You can reach me more directly at CFEason@cawalader.us I'll look forward to hearing from you.
