Brian: Saw your post from 2000. So hoping you still check in on this site.
I believe my husband is a descendant of the Audley, Touchet,Wingfield families. Having a few challenges with trying "to connect the dots" so to speak. In your searching have you come across the name,ANNE TOUCHET?
I think if I'm reading it right, the d/o John,Lord Audley Touchet b 1420 and married to Ann Eychingham. Who did Anne
Touchet Marry. I have myself so confused, I really must ask this. Thanking you in advance for your help and effort.
Look forward to hearing back from you.

Regards,
Maxine Davies in the USA kansaslassie@gmail.com

Hello Jan.:
I am Lola Maxine Davies [Sommers] here in the states. I am not doing very well with my research of the Audley family, saw your post and thought I'd just drop a line and see if we can connect on this.
I have been attempting to search for Isabell Baroness Audley
b 1375 d 1404 in Heleigh,Staffordshire, England. Here is where I'm pulling my hair, one record say's she married to John Touchet, then another record says James is who she was married to and John was their son. Do you have any information on this Lady? Would you be willing to share with me?
I am willing to share with folks any information I have on my surnames.
I am almost 79 years old, we have been married past 60 years now. We lived on a farm in Kansas USA, we have 2 wonderful son's and the most precious daughter-in-laws ever.
& there are 7 grandchildren and 7 gt grandchildren. My husband, Clyde turned 80 in Oct. last fall, we still live alone.
He loves watching football games, basketball, boxing, wrestling, kick boxing.
I do my genealogy.
Looking forward to your reply and making a new friend.

Regards,
Maxine kansaslassie@gmail.com

Re: Marriages of Martha Holmes (1640) - John Audley & William Wilbore

Kristin:

I had never heard of this second marriage to a Wilbore, and I have been around a long time. Maybe I just didn't look on all these internet errors. In the research of the Audley family, I have been advised that from several sources: The Odlin Family by J.T.Perry 1887; Genealogical Records, Early New England Settlers, 1600-1680; Davol-Dee Genealogy, O.A. Dee 1954; and Doherty's Beekman Patent ( which explains 2 Hannah Audleys.
That John Audley (03 Aug 1642 Boston-13 Dec 1711 Newport RI
married abt 1658 Martha Holmes (13 May 1640Salem MA -30 Dec 1711 Portsmouth RI daughter of( Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes) and had 5 children including Hannah Audley born 21 Aug 1660.
It would seem that dying this close together, and no mention that she ever married anyone else. I would conclude there was not a marriage to Mr. Wilbore.
I am just a little fish in this big sea, but that's my opinion. Others may differ if they wish.

Howard Boswell

Marriages of Martha Holmes (1640) - John Audley & William Wilbore

I'm interested in information about the marriages of Martha Holmes (b. 1640 to Rev. Obadiah Holmes & Katherin Hyde). She is listed in many trees as having been married to both John Audley (b. 1640 to John Audley & Margaret Brager) in 1660 and William Wilbore (b. 1630) in 1653.

This makes no sense to me as William Wilbore didn't pass until after 1700 and and I find nothing on a divorce of any kind. Many of the children claimed to have come from Martha Holmes & William Wilbore are born long after her date of marriage to John Audley and children born of her marriage to John Audley have birthdays mixed throughout that timeframe as well. Many trees seem to not include the last born Wilbore children as they conflict with the marriage to John Audley.

I haven't found any actual documentation of William Wilbore's marriage to Martha Holmes, although it's documented he did marry a Martha, but I have found numerous documents from the founding of Boston, etc.. mentioning in full name John Audley's wife Martha Holmes.

I'm not sure what the actual lineage is, but I tend to beleive that Martha Holmes was in fact NOT the wife of William Wilbore.. or maybe there was in fact another Martha Holmes in the area (maybe a cousin?)

I've seen the birth date for William Wilbore's wife Martha vary between 1632, 1634, 1636 and 1640 which would make more sense for a marriage that happened in 1653... while John Audley's wife Martha Holmes is documented as having been born in 1640 and her birthday is supported by official records.

Any help is appreciated!

Origin of Audley surname

The first mention of the Audley surname is in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was called Aldidelege, when the lands were held by a Saxon called Gamel, the son of Osbern the Saxon. At this time, the area was very sparsely populated. There was a medieval castle at Audley Castle Hill during the late 13th century; only a low earthwork remains of the former motte. The descent of the Audley family can be traced back as far as an Englishman named Ligulf of Aldithley, who held the estate not long after the Domesday Survey but whose relationship, if any, to Gamel the Saxon is unknown.

Yes John Shields and Bridget Audley are my husbands great- great grandparents. John Shields was born in 1802 in Horsleydown, Surrey. According to verbal history, he came to Australia with his brother on Board "Chilli" in 1833 and they first went gold mining in Victoria. They then went to Tasmania where they settled in Launceston. They had eleven children.

He was the son of Nicholas de Audley, Knt., and Joan Martin, and d. at Heleigh in co. Staffs 1 Apr. 1386. His wife, Joan de Mortimer, was the da. of Roger de Mortimer, 1st earl of March (descendant of King John) by Joan de Joinville.

Nicholas de Audley, Knt., born 11 Nov. 1292, was the son of Nicholas de Audley, Knt. by Katherine Giffard. Saying it is so and proving it as documented fact are two different things. It still is great fun to read about the history of those times and what they went through.

My Alice de Audley was b. abt 1304 d. 13 Jan 1373/74 and married to Ralph de Neville b abt 1291 d. 05 Aug 1367.

Have Alice's father as Hugh de Audley b. abt 1267 d. bef 12 Apr 1326 Married to Isolde Mortimer b. abt 1265 d. aft 1336.

Have more but it takes to long to type the rest in.
I have put together a (basic) family tree of The Touchet family between the years 1289-1631, concentrating mainly on the Touchet de Audley line, and ending with James Touchet, 13th Lord Audley and 3rd Earl Castlehaven (born 1617).

I am trying to find a link between this branch of the Touchet/Audley family and Hannah Audley, who married Jonathan Devol/Davol/Deuell (I have found many spellings of Jonathan's surname) in around 1671.

Can anyone help, please?
Her parents were John Beech and Eleanor Rubotham.

They are refered to in my ancestors William Rubotham's will of 1818 at Audley. When did John and Eleanor emigrate to America ?

I am presently unable to prove who William Rubotham's parents were .

Seek any mention of an Audley family in the colonies in 1600.
Particularly in the region that became Delaware. PA? NY?
MD? An Audley woman was married to William Maxwell about 1695. Patty Audley?? They had a son named James b abt 1697. William's father was James Maxwell who died 1694 in Kent Co Delaware leaving a large amount of property.
William's mother was Domasine Low. He had two half-brothers--James Junior and Robert. Most of my information is in the court records for the settlement of ths estate. dori

Hannah Audley, married to Jonathan Deuel, b. ca. 1655 d. 1737-42

In THE SETTLERS OF THE BEEKMAN PATENT, Vol. IV, p. 248, Frank J.Doherty reported that Jonathan Deuel (b. ca. 1655 d. 1737-42), son of William, married first "Hannah, daughter of John Audley." I am having some problem squaring Doherty's information with other reports.

Other souces state that Hannah, daughter of John, married Bumstead. Did Hannah marry twice? Was the father of Hannah Audley Deuel really John Audley, who came to America on the Winthrop Fleet? Or was my Hannah possibly a sister of the John Audley who came over on the Winthrop Fleet and did Hannah and John have a father named John? Any help would be appreciated.

Could someone post a reliable summary of the first two or three generations of the Audley family in America? Large numbers of American descendants must connect with the Audleys through their female lines.

In searching my SNEED ancestry...
It seems it goes back to Richard, Count Of EVEREUX.
Before him...it goes into the SS's (so and soSSon, or SSDatter)....such as my maiden Surname name would be CharlesSDatter (daughter).
Did I ever have a time figureing that one out...
Then the name changed to DE ALDITHELEY, but sometime in 1200's, they used AUDLEY, then DE SNEDE on up to present day of SNEED...in my case.
I may be far off base as this is a new discovery. But this may be the problem solver for some of you on the AUDLEY search...
DESCENDANTS' GATHERING

Dear Flowerdew Hundred Friend,

We’d like to invite you to participate in our second annual Descendants’ Gathering, scheduled for August 23rd of this year at Flowerdew Hundred in Prince George County, Virginia. The Flowerdew Hundred Descendant’s Gathering is an event designed to reunite the relatives of Flowerdew’s numerous and diverse families. Flowerdew will have genealogical information available for many of these families; including Barkers, Browns, Dunns, Flowerdews, Fry, Flood, Hache, Justice, Kents (Epes), Pierseys, Poythresses, Seldens, Wilkins, Willcoxes, Woodsons, Y(E)ardleys, and others. Speakers and other activities are planned, and tours of the property will be given on the hour for descendants. We are also encouraging descendants to bring research and family histories they’ve gathered, to share and exchange with other descendants and those interested in their ancestry. We hope this program will facilitate closer contact between descendants and emphasize the importance of their ancestors’ roles in the history of Flowerdew Hundred.
To ensure the success of this event, we need to hear from as many descendants as possible! If you’re interested in participating in or attending our Descendants’ Gathering, please call (804) 541-8897, or email flowerdew@firstsaga.com. Finally, please feel free to share this letter with other Flowerdew descendants and/or post our event on your webpage.
We hope to hear from you!

I am looking for information on the family of Thomas Audley, born in Leicester, England in 1870. His mother was a widow (as indicated in the 1881 census) her name, Clemintina. Thomas had 6 siblings, Henry, John, William, Rose, and Flora.

He married Hannah Hunt and while still in England had the following children: Hannah, Alice, Thomas, Charles, and Doris. Sometime after the 1901 census but before 1912, they emigrated to Canada where they lived in Montreal at 1694 Cartier St. While in Montreal, my father Henry Victor Audley was born, as was another Thomas (I am surmising the Thomas born in England died), Mabel and Kathleen (Kay).

I'm having difficulty in tracing back to find his father's name as well as when he arrived in Canada. I've checked Ellis Island and have had no luck with the Canadian ports of entry.

Can anyone help me?

Val

Mary Beech Audley

Mary Beech Audley was my great grandmother. Her family added the Audley to their name when they came to the US in about 1846 from either England or Ireland. My mother told me that her grandmother (Mary B) talked about an Audley Castle. There is an Audley Castle in County Down, Ireland and there is also an Audley End House in Saffron Walden, England. My greatgrandmother was the youngest in a family of ten children. She married a man by the name of Branch who died within five years of the marriage. There were two daughters and twin sons who died in birth after their father's death. The oldest girl was named Ellinor, born 1859, married a Russell. The other daughter ( my grandmother ) was named Georgia Mary, 1861-1918. She married Perry Allen Oakes and produced three girls, Mary Lydia(my mother), Ellinor Audley, and Ruth. My greatgrandmother remarried an Elliot. She and her new husband moved to North Dakota and later to Everett, Wash. She was burned to death at her daughter Ellinor's house in LaCrosse, Wis. in 1907. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone out there? I've just started to trace this side of the family, but my information is sketcy. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me add to the pieces.
