Hello I am researching my Family history. The names of Stephens and Aycock are from my Ex husbands side. I have very little information. My ex husband is Charles Kevin Stephens born in 1970 in Atlanta GA. (No Contact w/ex or his family)His parents are Charles Perry Stephens out of Riverdale, and Iris Carolyn Aycock. I do not have any names of Iris Aycocks siblings. I have met a few of the family members but have no memory of their names off hand. I believe I remember that there was 6 or 7 brothers and sisters. I am researching the family for my children, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Kirsten Stephens

If you are really trying to find someone of Jesse's line to test for DNA, you should look in the area of LaGrange and Kinston, NC. My great-grandfather, Turner Calvin Aycock, was a direct male-line descendant of Jesse. Turner had five sons:

Burtus Edgar LaFayette Aycock (1910-1966 d. Fayetteville NC)
Addison Gorden Aycock (1915-1982 d. LaGrange, NC)
Alison James Aycock (1918-1964 d. Jacksonville, NC)
William Alvin Aycock (1921-1989 d. Goldsboro, NC)
Milford Bratley 'Doc' Aycock (1928-1967 d. Kinston, NC)

Unfortunately for the DNA project, I am descended from his daughter Mary Luvinia, so I can't do the test myself.

DNA update:

1. I have a positive match with the only other Aycock male I'm aware of that has tested thus far. He comes from the James Aycock line (supposed son of William [born 1705 VA]).
2. I have another match with a male that appears to be linked to the Charles Aycock of Wayne and Dobbs Counties.
3. I am currently evaluating two other male matches. More to come on these.

No, I have no more information than has already been put forth. Just wanted to acknowledge it was supposition only.

By the way, DNA testing is yielding some positive results. I have tested as a match with the only other known Aycock family member to participate to date. I am from the Reddick Aycock line, and the other individual is from the James Aycock line. That is, James, supposed son of William (born 1705, VA). And, I'm working on a possible match with the Charles Aycock line (Wayne and Dobbs Counties). Perhaps DNA testing will continue to be a useful tool in threading together our family brick walls. Time will tell.

I do think the theories of an earlier Aycock generation in the Wayne County region are very plausible.

I got it from a compilation of Aycock attributions that was put together by Earl Bell. You can find it here:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/wilson/bios/aycock71gbs.txt

But even in this link, it's just an editor's note, not a detailed attribution. If you have other documents showing a John or other children, I think we would all be interested.

Yes, I noted the issue with William almost as soon as I hit the send button on my previous post. That 1702 date does indeed pose a problem, or an opportunity, depending on the way one looks at it.

Regarding the sons of Thomas, where is the record which lists these children? I've seen none. I thought the idea that Thomas sired Richard, Robert, and William was just supposition based on dates in scant records of the time. Has someone found a will or other document showing these to be the children of Thomas?

The problem is that the William Aycock who landed in Craven County did so in 1702, It would be another 38 years before William moved out of Virginia and into North Carolina. In fact, in 1702, William son of Thomas was only two years old.

William son of Thomas is also pretty well-documented, through living 20 years or so in Bertie county, then for the remainder of his life in the Swift Creek area of Johnson County. (Which may in fact be the same place - I'd have to map it.)

I also have no record of Thomas having a son John. The records I am looking at (compiled by Earl Bell) show only three: William, Robert, and Richard.
I'd like to offer another possible theory. Thomas Aycock was the first Aycock ancestor, arriving to VA at Jamestown, eventually settling in the Charles City County area. He had children Richard, Sr., John, Sr., William, Robert, and Elizabeth. Richard's son Richard, Jr. eventually relocated to the Granville/Bute area, where he raised a large family. His family tree is well documented from there. John, Sr. and William relocated to Brunswick County, VA, before moving into NC, William first to Northampton County, while John relocated further south to Craven County. After a time, William joined John in Craven County, which eventually became Dobbs, Johnston, and Wayne Counties. Jesse, and the "other children" (John, Jr., Charles, Simon, Thomas, etc.) could be the offspring of either William or John. John, Jr. was likely the only known child of John, Sr., barring further evidence. For the rest, it's a pick 'em. The only problem with this theory is the mention of a William Aycock in the early ship passenger list. Perhaps this is the same William from Northampton. Could he have taken passage aboard ship to reach his destination?

Well, I guess I'm related to your wife, too. Drusilla Bardin and Hardy Hooks are also up my family tree, and I had Drusilla's parentage back a couple of generations. But because Charity was not mentioned in Drusilla's father Jacob's will, I didn't know if they were the same Jacob Bardin, or if Charity was indeed Jacob Bardin's daughter.

I think it likely that Charity was the daughter of the same Jacob Bardin, given the land transfer between Jacob and Jesse Aycock about the time of Jesse and Charity's marriage. And the 1786 Census for Wayne County only shows three Bardins: Jacob, James (his son) and Jesse (his brother), so there were no other Bardin's in the area. Jacob Bardin had two sons, James and George, but George died young, I think. There are several daughters mentioned in Jacob's will, but not Charity. However, the will was witnessed by Jesse and Elias Aycock, so this Jacob obviously knew them.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bargen/jba...

For the moment, I'm accepting that Jacob was the father of both Drusilla and Charity, and that Charity simply received nothing in his will. Jesse was probably well-established enough that Charity needed nothing, and it is also possible that Charity was already dead. (I have her DoD as 'before 1787,' but have no proof of exact date, and Jacob's will was written 14 Oct 1786.)

I've seen others list Jacob's wife as Sarah or Sallie Pipkin, but Pipkin was the name of her first husband. Her maiden name was Futrell. But again, I'm taking things that others have listed on Ancestry.com - I'm not sure of the documentation.

I'll keep looking, and if I find any proof, I'll let you know. And tell my other cousin hello for me.

Hmmm. Well, I guess I don't KNOW much about that family. Need to spend some time doing that. I have seen Charity listed as daughter of both Jacob Barden and Jesse Barden, purported to be brothers, and living nearby. All that is hearsay, as far as I know -- but I could just be uninformed.

I have some information on Jacob because my wife is also descended from his daughter Druscilla (married Hardy Hooks), and because I have mapped his 1744 land grant on the southside of Great Swamp. Haven't gotten around to exploring that land for the home site yet. Have Jacob's will dated 1786 (which doesn't list Charity) and inventory from 1787. Never looked at Jesse Barden records, except a few land records in mapping the Great Swamp area.

Most folks seem to list Jacob's birth as about 1705, in Chowan Precinct, but I have no idea based on what. He had to be born before 1723 to get that land grant. I have seen his marriage to Sarah/Sallie Pipkin? listed as 1729, but again I do not know the basis of that.

Let me poke through the stuff I've got, and maybe I can also look through the land records and see if anything jumps out about her parentage, and then about both Jesse Barden and Jacob Barden. Others may have something definitive on it.

Doug,

Now that we've run our theory about Jesse's parentage into the ground, I'm working on parts of my family tree around him. What's known about him?

Thanks,

Jim

Well, it just says Craven County, which didn't even exist until 1712. In 1702, it was still Bath County. But the fact that they bothered to give the area a name would indicate that someone was living there. The Tuscarora Wars were well underway there, and Beaufort, NC was built in 1709 on land taken from them. So I don't know where Richard Dobbs Speight got his data, but it obviously went back farther than his own life.

I've never been to the NC Archives. Perhaps I should go.

Seems like Charles told me he helped Jane with Info. on her book & he has since written an Aycock Book. Due to my heath [ in wheelchair ] & him being so far from Monroe,NC,& legs bothering him, we may not get to have the Aycock\Aycoth reunion in Union County NC this year. I just don't know if he is able to attend as many reunions as in the pass but like me still works on our family & he still works on the Aycock Center.
Right now I'm trying to find info. on Rebecca Pace Aycock's sister Sarah Pace House becauce William's son by first wife, Charles married a Sarah House in Darlington County,SC in Nov. 1773. I will be out of town next week, but will get down there as soon as I can.

I am somewhat confused by the citation -- and 1702 would be REALLY early for the New Bern area . . . I thought 1710 was the earliest settlement there.

"Thanks, jkhart!"

Thanks to Earl Bell. I was just passing along something that he found in his research that offered a possible alternative to Jesse's parentage. The arrival in Craven County of William Aycock on the Linder in 1702, followed by the testimony of John Aycock in Craven County in 1740, gives some credence to the idea that John was descended from William and that there was a family of Aycocks in NC that did not come down from VA, but arrived separately, directly from England.

I have been trying to find other records of the Linder, to see if there are connections to other immigrants on that ship. So far, no luck. But I suppose I should look in the book in which the William Aycock record was found. Perhaps we could find connections to other families on board that could provide clues to William's life and friends.

Anyone know where to find "Richard Dobbs Spaight, RECORDS OF CRAVEN COUNTY [NC], citation from Draughton"?

Richard's wife's name was either Claiborne or Clairborne. Considering as how spelling was sort of random at the time, it could be either.
I posted my original comments based on work I did in the run-up to Charles' book . . . I did large sections of the Jesse/James/Benjamin chapters for him, and also sent him this intriguing Aycock Swamp material before it was published, but it didn't make it into the volume. My wife descends from this line.

The material I posted remains unpublished, though it is used in several manuscripts I am assembling about the first generation (1738-1750) of settlers into the "void" left behind after the Tuscarora War (at least from the Eurpean perspective!).

Charles' book (expanded from Edith Jane Everline Aycock's 1987/97 work) makes clear that the parentage of the (Johnston/Dobbs/Wayne) Jesse Aycock was uncertain. He repeats the often told "word of mouth" story that Jesse was the son of William Aycock, who died when his horse spooked crossing a river (which one is unknown!). He goes on to say that others list Jesse as the son of William (born 1705 in VA), but that exhaustive research by him and by EJEA could not prove either contention.

Charles also mentions an intriguing early record from 1740 in Craven County, where John Aycock gave evidence to the court for the King against John Matthews.

Thus, I am intrigued by the item posted by jkhart196 about the 1702 passenger list to Craven County, and the theory he espouses -- which I deem quite reasonable. One can imagine John Aycock, son of that William, giving evidence in 1740 in New Bern at the same time he was scoping land options up the Neuse basin, up Contentnea Creek. The very first grants in the upper half of the Contentnea Basin were issued in 1738/39, and only a handful there had been issued by 1744/45. (That area is the heart of the former Tuscarora Nation, with village sites all around!)

Then, if John had children Jesse, Thomas and John during the 1740's and early 1750's (and perhaps plus others -- maybe Charles and William, to match the militia records from the late 1760s), but died during or just after the pre-Wayne "burned" period, there would be no extant estate records for John. (Many of the earliest Wayne records
were also lost when Cornwallis came through in May, 1781. Interestingly, I have re-mapped the Cornwallis route for author Emily Weil, and believe that at least part of the British Army crossed Aycock Swamp and marched right past Contentnea Quaker Meeting, and these Aycock's abodes.)

John Aycock being the one who bought the land from Jonas Cook (located, as I said previously, on the banks of Aycock Swamp next to the unknown Aycock lands!), recorded about 1761 makes him of legal age at that time, reinforcing this view. John Aycock then presumably sells land (one can never prove what instrument is shown in the cross-index!) to William Lancaster recorded roughly 1774. NONE of the other Dobbs/Wayne Aycocks execute ANY land recorded instruments during this Dobbs period (aside from the previously mentioned grant to William Aycock, which was undobtedly upstream).

Perhaps Jesse is the oldest, marries first, and receives land from his father-in-law Jacob Barden/Bardin (just upstream from his father), recorded about 1763 (making him born probably a smidgen earlier than most records state, say 1742).

His brothers Charles and William are are old enough to join him in the militia in 1767 (though John Sr. is too old?), but John Jr. and Thomas are too young. William shows up in the Dobbs 1780 census records, and listed as too old to fight in the Dobbs Rev. War records from 1781 -- which one I do not know!

John Aycock Sr. (note!) entered in 1778 and then received in 1779 a land grant in the upper part of Aycock Swamp, at the same time that Jesse does the same near his father-in-law on Little Swamp, off Great Swamp, a short distance upstream. Thomas Aycock enters in 1779 and receives in 1783 land also on Aycock Swamp. John Aycock Sr. sells his land shortly after (listed in 1782 and 1786, but I need to check the deed dates!), at which time John Aycock, Jr. is also engaged in land sales. Thomas leaves an 1807 will.

Anyway, there are holes in this story, and different possible interpretations, but it sure looks reasonable to me! that's my fable, and I am sticking to it -- until someone proves it wrong!

Thanks, jkhart!

Courtney: I think we would all be interested in your data, and also its source. If you can show that John and Thomas were sons of William (1705) by a previous wife, then that just leaves Jesse himself, and his parentage is still a mystery.

I am the son of Charlie Aycoth from Union county N.C. My Grandfather was Edward Aycoth and his father (my GG dad)was Sylvester Aycoth. My dad was the only one of his siblings (10 total I think) to move to Texas. Myself and my son, Andrew T. Aycoth are the only ones carry on the family name here in Texas.

On this web page:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/wilson/bios/aycock71gbs.txt

which lists many public records of Aycocks in Virginia and North Carolina from 1607 to 1800, I found the following tidbit:

NORTH CAROLINA

1702

* Ship Passenger List. to North Carolina on the LINDER, WILLIAM AYCOCK. #517. [SOURCE: Richard Dobbs Spaight, RECORDS OF CRAVEN COUNTY [NC], citation from Draughton]

Now, if one were to land in Craven County, one would only need to follow the Neuse River inland for 100 miles or so to get to... Aycock's Swamp.

In many family trees here, I have seen Jesse Aycock listed as the son of William Aycock, but they usually connect him to a William Aycock born 1705 in Charles City VA, who emigrated to Northampton Co NC ~1740 and later to Georgia. However, the points drader77 makes here (that the area was called Aycock's Swamp prior to 1740 and that there are other orphan Aycocks in the area) make this unlikely.

I'm working on a theory that Jesse, John, and Thomas may have all been sons or grandsons of the 1702 immigrant William Aycock. Any help or supporting information would be appreciated.

I just found this web site:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/wilson/bios/aycock71gbs.txt

It lists the following:

1664

* Court Minutes, Charles City County, Virginia (December, 1664). JOHN COGAN proved rights to 600 acres for importing THOMAS AYCOCK and others. [SOURCE: VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS, Volume 13, page 23]

[Eds. Note: THOMAS AYCOCK is believed to have had three sons:

(1) WILLIAM AYCOCK b. about 1700 in Prince George County, VA. first wife is not known, his second wife was RECECCA PACE, d. 1765 in Orange County, NC, Estate Administered, August, 1766;

(2) RICHARD AYCOCK; and

(3) ROBERT AYCOCK, married Mary

* Court Orders, Charles City County, Virginia. 1664-65. JOHN COGAN proves rights to 600 acres for transport of THOMAS AYCOCK [1664]

This proves, I think, that William Aycock (b 1705) was likely the son to Thomas Aycock who came from Britain in 1664.

I am still looking for some connection between Jesse Aycock (who lived in Wayne/Lenoir NC during the Revolutionary War) and his father. Many sites list William Aycock as his father, but others say that this is not true. Does anyone have proof?

I am also a descendant of William Aycock and Rebecca Pace via Jesse Aycock and Charity Barden. I am particularly interested in William's parentage. I believe his father's name was either William or James, but I cannot find any information on either one that would confirm it. If you know anything about it, please contact me.

Jim Hart

Well, let me look into some of my cousins and see if I can find anyone who is interested in participating. It might be hard. I know that one of Turner Calvin's sons had no children, and another had only a single daughter. But he had two other sons, let me look down their trees and see what I can find.
