Re: Nathaniel Ayers Virginia 1748

Odessa, If you have Indians in your line your are more than likely descended from the Nathaniel Ayers who immigrated from Wales and not the Mass. Ayers line that descended from John Ayers b. 1585 who married Hannah Webb
Evered. This john Ayers immigrated to Mass. around 1630. There was some question of whether he was one of the 4 sons of the Thomas Ayers who, along with other investors, financed the Isle of Wight settlement in VA. in 1620. Isle of Wight was the second VA settlement after Jamestown. These 4 Ayers came over around 1620 along with other Isle of Wight settlers. Around 1630, the same time John Ayers arrived in Mass., there was an Indian massacre at Isle of Wight and most of the survivors moved to other established settlements. According to the History of Marion County (SC) two of the Ayers brothers went north and two went South. We know Thomas moved to Jamestown. William probably is the William Ayers who settled in SC near Beaufort. this William fathered only one child, a daughter. The names and info on where the other two went is unknown. The idea that John Ayers of Mass may have been one of these four brothers was reinforced by the fact that he was not on the passenger list when the ship left England but was on it when it arrived in Mass. However, Hannah Webb Evered's father must have been fleeing from something because he traveled on the same ship under an assumed name believed to be his wife's maiden name. It is unknown whether he was john Webb or john Evered. Recently someone has unearthed English records which indicate his name may have been
Evered and that the Ayers and Evered families may have been involved in business activities in England. There are no records of whether Daniel Ayers (son of nathaniel) married an Indian but there were Indians in Trader Thomas Payne's family and Moses Ayers, another of Nathaniel's sons, is reported to have had at least two Indian wives. I have come to the conclusion that the mother of Garland or Gallant and Mourning/Morning Ayers was one of old Moses' Indian wives. This is based on corespondence with several individuals who can trace their lines back to one or the other of them. One elderly woman said she remembered her grandmother telling her that her grandmother's name was Morning Star, which indicates her mother was Indian. And one of Garland/Gallants' children married a first cousin. After checking the records the only
Ayers with that name at the time was the child of another of old Moses' (of Franklin Co. Ga) children.

A computer expert once told me that if the government had three pieces of information about you they could sort you out from all the other people in the US, and they don't have to have your name. I have used that method, and discovered it works most of the time, to sort out the many
Ayers families, and there are a lot of them since some of those old guys married several times and had large families, some with as many as three wives. 9 to 13 children per wife was not unusual.

John Ayers 1/2 brother to Junaluska

I hope that you are still on here. I am actually looking for information on John Ayers that is the half brother of Junaluska. I have been researching the Ayers family lineage which actually led me to the Catawba Indian Tribes of North and South Carolina. I have read that many of the smaller tribes at the time (including Cherokee) had integrated into the Catawba lands and I am wondering if this John Ayers could be my John Ayers. The John Ayers that I have was born about 1763 in Tyrrell County and was the son of John Airs of Tyrrell County. Although John Airs was married to a woman named Martha, I do not believe her to be John Ayers' mother. My John Ayers was the father of John David "Captain Jack" Ayers who served under Andrew Jackson in the Seminole War as a scout. My dilema has been figuring out the blood connection with the Ayers and the Catawba Nation. I know from John Airs' will that he was a prominent white land owner, so the indian connection would make sense if he had a child with an indian woman. It has been established that John David Ayers was at least 1/2 indian so the blood had to come from somewhere. Any informaton would be greatly appreciated.

Penny

The names Dannaha and Betty Pledge Ayers are also connected to Trader Thomas Payne's family . If I remember correctly Dannaha was an Indian Chief. Betty was either his daughter or granddaughter. There was more information on them on one internet sites but I don't remember the rest ofit nor the site where I discovered the inof.

I have been researching the Ayers families in America for over 40 years. Here is what I have learned about Garland/Gallant Ayers and his sister Mourning Ayers which is gleaned from corspondence with descendants of both. One woman wrote me that she was the granddaughter of Mourning's granddaughter and she remembered her grandmother telling her that her grandmother's name was Morning Star, not Mourning. This indicates that her mother was probably an Indian. Another person revealed that one of Gallant's children married a frist cousin who was the child of another son of old Moses, who died in Franklin Co Ga. Moses, son of Nathaniel who immigratedto Va. from Wales around 1739. Nathaniel's family intermarried with that of Trader Thomas Payne who also immigrated from wales. Have not been able to locate the passenger list to see if Nathaniel and Thomas Payne arrived on the same boat, but Moses must have traveled around with Payne when he was trading with the Indians because he served as an Indian Scout for George Washington during the Indian Wars. Moses had severl wives, at least two of which were Indians. Based on the information that I collected, none of which can be proven, I am convinced that both Gallant/Garland Ayers and his sister Morning star were the children of Moses and one of his Indian wives.

If your Ayers are from Lee Co VA they are more than likely descended from Daniel Ayers, son of Nathaniel Ayers who was b. in Wales and immigrated around 1740. This Daniel was the brother of Moses who died in Franklin co. Georgia. Daniel is found in the 1790 Lee Co.census records living near Levi Carmack. Dan Jr. married one of the Carmack girls. I am doing this from memory and my dates may not be absolutely accurate but the information can be checked out. The Nathaniel who immigrated from Wales is not the same Nathaniel as the one who was the son of the Ayers who married Mary Walker. The confusion is because someoen has listed the heirs in the Will of the VA Nathaniel as that of the nathaniel who d. in MD. The Md Nathaniel married Dorcus Cox and their children all are accounted for. Most of them moved west into Ohio and beyond. And lest anyone think that Nathaniel had more than one wife, Dorcus outlived him and at one time pics of their tombstones were available on line. That Ayers family's sire, John Ayers , b. abt 1585 in England, who married Hannah Webb Evered, arrived in Massachusetts around 1630. The family stayed in Massachusetts until one of the Ayers women and her mother in law were hanged as witches in 1692, they then moved to NJ to live with the Quakers. Most of the internet info on this John Ayers' parents is false. His parents were not Thomas Ayers and Elizabeth Rogers, but he shares a grandfather with the John on that line. The line splits 2 generations back with the Ayers who married Jane Cusse.
The Nathaniel who immigranted from Wales intermarried with Trader Thomas Payne's family. Trader Thos. Payne was also from Wales. and apparently Moses Ayers must have traveled around with Payne when he was trading with the Indians because he served as a scout for George Washington during the Indian Wars. I have worked most of the Ayers lines for over 40 years and am familiar with most of the older lines.A lot of the misinformation is the result of assumptions made when only limited info was available before the internet. Apparently many of the Ayers' took advantage of the free land grants given out by states for new arrivals. They would go across a state line, claim a grant, improve it, sell it, and move on to claim another grant. This accounts for their confusing migration patterns. When I saw you were seeking information about this Nathaniel Ayers, I thought you might have information about more recent ayers history. If you do, I would appreciate your letting me know how to access it. Thank you.
Darlys

I'm sorry, but I don't think there's a connection. The only Alfred Ayers in my family tree of the approx. right age was born In Portsea, Hampshire, England in the 3rd quarter 1843, and I'm fairly sure he died in the 3rd quarter of 1858 in Portsea.
Thank you so much for all of this information. My grandfather was Ernie Ramsey Sr. and his father was Millard Ramsey. I knew very little about the family's history. I was always told that Millard's mother, which I know now was Tennie, was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, but it looks like that was not the case. My dad, Ernie Ramsey, Jr. says he vaguely remembers an Aunt Annie Belle which I assume was your grandmother.

Who do you descend from? My grandmother was Anna Belle Ayers, half sister to Millard. She married William Davis who had Mary Ellen, Reece, Dorothy Jean & my father William Davis.I have the Choate lineage back from Tennie, whose parents were William Finn Choate & Mary Johnson. William's father was Meadow Choate & mother Lucinda Laycock. Meadow was son of Sallie Choate, believed to be illegitimate, father unknown. Sallie married William Ramsey after having Meadow & I believe their son Edward was the father of Lee Ramsey who was father of Millard Ramsey.
Sallie Choate was daughter of Austin Choate & Oma Pyburn. The Indian records mentioned were all denied in the Eastern Cherokee rolls after 1906 in which several members of the Choate clan petitioned for monies based on claim that Austin Choate was half Cherokee and mother was full Cherokee. All were denied for lack of proof. I have found the Choates & Pyburns back to Maryland in the late 1600's so I am unsure that there is an actual Indian lineage but hope someday evidence will come forward.

I think you're right that Rhoda's husband was a son of Isaac Bell I. I've seen a listing of his many children that included an Isaac, so maybe she was married to this Isaac.

I found an Isaac Bell who married a Mary Sharp in 1727 in Gloucester County. The location is not where I expected to find Isaac, but that marriage date makes a lot more sense and allows for him to easily have had the 14 or so children he is supposed to have had. I'm trying to research this couple now.

Thanks for your help with this.

that makes sense. Was Tennie Choate native american? that is what I've heard. Millard was my paternal great grandfather. He passed away when I was young. I remember going to his house, but I wasn't very close to him. My dad was though. However, he doesn't know much about his history either. thanks!
