Hi Pat, So far the names Ayre, Hanlon, Wilson, and Cassidy are so close their must be a connection, as i have found all these names in my research. I can definitely state that Alexander and janet were my grandparents, and that the dates of marriage you sent me fit exactly with what i have. now the interesting one is Adam and Mary`s marriage, this fits in with his birth date (1883) making him 20yrs old when he got married. do you have any information on his wife Mary?. The above Adam according to my documents is the brother of Janet (my grandmother. Now your John Ayre and Jane Wilson, i cannot fit into my research so far, but the dates sugest he might be a brother of my great great grantfather James Ayre born about 1840/45, i have yet to confirm the exact date. Before i forget my my great great grandmother,s maiden name was Cassidy. Here,s how the Wilson comes in, my great great grandfather (born about 1861) married a Sarah Wilson (born about 1872), they had 5 children Annie (1885) alexander my granddad (1890, which also fits in with the marriage dates you gave me)Sarah (1891) Ellan (1897) and Emily Wilson (1899). hoping this wil help you to find out more on John Ayre and Jane wilson.
All the best and thanks, looking forward to hearing from you. William.
Hi, I am researching the Ayre family . I was trying to find a connection with the information that you had posted but was unable to. I thought I would tell you the names and dates of my family and see if any of them are familiar to you. My family were from East Belfast, in Ireland. John Ayre b. abt 1845 married Jane Wilson b abt 1847. Their children (that I know off) were William Hugh, Rebecca, Elizabeth Ann, Sarah and John. These children were born between 1870 and 1880.
I have a record of an Adam Ayre but was unable to connect to my family, but it may be helpful to you. You may already have it but I will post it anyway.
Pat

Record type	Civil Marriage
Date of marriage	11th July 1903
Grooms name Adam Ayre
Brides name	Mary Murray
Church	St Anne's Church of Ire
Parish	Shankill
Civil District	Belfast
County	Antrim

Record type	Civil Marriage
Date of marriage	2nd Oct 1910
Grooms name Alexander Hanlon
Brides name	Janet Ayre
Church	St Anne's Church of Ire
Parish	Shankill
Civil District	Belfast
County	Antrim

I'm trying to track down the biological father of Ernest Ayre born in 1905. His mother was Emily Ayre living Dunkirk Farm near Birtley with her parents and son in 1911 census. I have a copy of Ernest's birth certificate but it doesn't have a father's name on it. I know his father was living on the old A1 road, which is now Durham Road (A167) going through Low Fell in Gateshead. In a wooden fronted house (1of2) just before the Angel Of North on the right hand side after Eighton Lodge if you join the A167 from the south.

Probably best to contact me direct, my email is peaster2k_1@hotmail.com.

Regards
David

G'day Judy, I am your cousin and my research on the Ayres is that Charles and Hannah nee Blockley came from Breedon on the Hill and Gaddesby, Leicestershire respectively.

The other children that stayed in England were around Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire and from that issue came a female missionary to Montreal, Quebec, Canada called Isia bn 1905.

They did not return to be picked up in the 1911 census so I assume she and her parents stayed there.

I do not know what happened to Abram and Frances. BTW I am related through Winifred Charlotte Ayre

My Grandmother Elizabeth Primrose Montgomery Ayre came to America when she was about 17 years old. I know she had a Brother and her Father's name was Adam. Her Mother was Janet or Janette Cassidy but that is all I know about her family. She was born April 19, 1893 in Belfast, Ireland. If anyone has information that will help me with further research please let me know.

Dear Jan

Good to hear from you. We have been away and then had a family invasion for half term meaning October was choc-a bloc as much of the year seems to have been! I am now trying to catch up with everything.
The Ayre family history is very complicated andI've gathered so much information over the years. I will reply soon and try to elucidate the connection with the Colne Ayre Family which I'm satisfied is proved although lacking Joseph's French birth is rather frustrating.

I'll be in touch I hope before too long.

Best wishes

Maeve

Hi Maeve, long time, no hear. I'm back doing some family tree with a vengeance now I have some time on my hands!! My kids have gone off travelling round Asia and Australia until next year!

Anyway, I was wondering if you have any furthre information on the Ayres (or if you've had any further contact with the USA relatives). I am particularly interested in finding any photos anyone has, especially Joseph Gearth (1858, as I'm still hitting the brick wall that is his birth!! If you remember he was born BRITISH SUBJECT, FRANCE, and I'm struggling to finally link him to the info you sent me. So if you have anything else I'd be grateful. Thanks. Hope you are keeping well.
Hi thanks for your reply, however, I don't have a 'Francis' Ayre in my tree (Male). I have a Francis Ayre, nee Whitehead who married Norman Ayre.
My 3 x great grandfather was called William Ayre, but his Father was John Hayre (we think a mistake in transcription of records), because it reverts back to Ayre again further up the line.
I also have another William Ayre in the tree, but he was my great Grandather's uncle, so obviously goes off on a different line.
I'm not aware, yet, of any Ayre's from my family in the Devon area, they are all around Yorkshire (West and South). Please get back in touch if you think we still have a link somewhere.
Thanks
Jan

In 1885, William Ayre married Catherine Norris in Thirsk, Yorkshire, but seems to vanish ...Catherine appears in both the 1891 and the 1901 Censuses living first with her mother and then with her sisters family, the Wardmans....In both she is listed as married and in 1901 there is a death record for a William Ayre in Thirsk who was born in 1856 and would have been a similar age to Catherine (Kate)...in 1901, she has a four year old son, Fred, so it would seem that they were still a couple, just not at the same address...Does anybody have any links to the Ayre family in Thirsk or any suggestions where I could find William

Thanks

Ray

Hi,
James Adams, baptised 11/12/1808 in Buckland Brewer, married Elizabeth Ayre baptised 21/10/1816 at Little Torrington, Devon, England on 30/03/1848. They had two children, George Henry Adams, born 05/05/1853 in Frithelstock and Mary Ann Adams, born 30/07/1855 in Frithelstock.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Francis & Margaret Ayre. Her brother, William (baptised 11/03/1821) actually married someone called Elizabeth and they lived in Wales. The William Ayre (baptised 09/09/1821) that married Thirza Sanders was actually the son of William & Ann Ayre.

William the elder (husband of Ann) and Francis were brothers.

I hope this assists.

Kind Regards

Jan

Northcutt is also known as "Northcutt Elliot Funeral Home in Bowmanville"
They had 3 children, Cindy, Wendy and John Ayre.
I am John's youngest childed out of 2. I am the second youngest out of grandchildren, there are 6 grandchildren altogether.
But we are all in the Durham area except Cindy's family.
I don't know how much that helps or anything at all.
Truth is, I never knew anyone else who has the same last name except my extended family.

Hey David,

I grew up on Ayrshire Farm in Upperville where the Ayre's lived. Thomas died of wounds in Cashtown, PA after Pickett's Charge in the Battle of Gettysburg. If I remember correctly Edward and Annie B. settled in Waterford, VA. One of the female Ayres died in childhood I thought. At any rate a number of them are buried at Ivy Hill in Upperville right at the entrance of the cemetery. I will try and find my notes, but if you make it to Upperville you need to look up Welby Kenny.

Also, the Benton farm in Middleburg is something to see if you haven't already. It's called Huntlands.

Take care good luck.

Claiborne Stokes
Mobile, AL

I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Ayre born in Ireland (possibly Mayo), around 1876-80. It is possible she was one of two orphans, her twin sister being Margaret Ayre. It is said they were brought over to England, and to the Manchester/Leeds area and lived in an orphanage, convent, workhouse or similar. So if you have a Margaret Ayre somewhere in your family history matching any of the above details I'd be please if you would let me know. Thanks.

Hello,

I am trying to find out details of a Mary Ayre/Air who was born in 1783 (baptised 11.11.1783 at Acomb in Northumberland). From reading a copy of her brother John's Will I know that Mary married and had family. However, from the Will it is very difficult to make out whether she became Mary Tones or Mary Jones. I suspect that Mary and her family would remain close to the Newcastle Upon Tyne area.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks.

Jane.

Hi again. my email address is jandennis11@aol.com

I am quite taken with the way Ancestry works now. When I was a past member there wasn't the facilty to link this site with my tree, and especially the new tool they have whereby you upload your tree and it automatically searches for everyones records. Its amazing because I uploaded my tree, it searched for everything, and I've downloaded it again into my database. Its so easy so please do try it. Obviously it goes without saying to make sure you back up your tree before you attempt it. I once had a 'happening' when my tree was merged with a database my cousin had set up! I try to validate all information before I put people in my tree, but if there are any strange bods then I know about them, whereas my cousin had filled his with people he couldn't validate, and I ended up with some very strange connections and had to start from scratch filtering them all out again!!! Not a happy experience. If you go onto the home person, click on 'edit this person', then click on the 'family' tab it takes you to the download page. If you are uploading just click on the family tree tab at the top of every page along the bar at the top. It really is quite easy, and also the easiest way to search for records as it does all for you. I just wish I had taken my membership earlier, for that reason, and for connecting with you! Anyway, please do email anything you have. I shall look forward to getting it.

Dear Jan
I am also very thrilled because I've discovered no one with a connection to our Ayre family since my contact with the Amercian descendants thirty years ago and also I had known you existed since 2006!! At the time I typed out the main details and it is in my file
My tree isn't online as I am not especially computer literate and I'm also overwhelmed by the amount of information to enter up and the time needed. I have spreadsheets of the census entries and BMDs and a lot else!
William wasn't the only one in a Debtors prison. Jonas who went to the US was in Lancaster Gaol in 1855 (London Gazette) In the 1890s Howarth Ayre illegitimate son of William's sister Ann also had debt problems.
It seems to have been common fate for tradesmen as we have found some of my husband's ancestors had debt problems
too.
Do you know how we can get in touch so that I can let you have everything? Have you the same email address as in 2006.
Maeve

Dear Maeve, you are an absolute star!!!! I wish I'd renewed my subscription back in 2006! I can't believe I have found someone who has, not just some, but quite a lot of info on the Ayres. I was getting really frustrated looking for them all. Can I get access to your tree through here? Its all changed since I was last on so am still finding my way round. I thought it was ironic the bit about John leaving a will and sharing it out between 7 children, only for one of them, namely William (my 3 x great grandfather) to end up in debtors jail! I would be very thankful to keep in touch and receive more information on them all. I'm on a high tonight having read your response!! Jan

Dear Jan

I am absolutely delighted to hear from you. I looked at your tree originally which was when I realised there was a connection. I will have another look though.

I have a great deal of information on the Ayres (my maiden name)from the mid 1700s so I will just put a simple first reply here.

Joseph Garth Ayre was the grandson of William and Hannah Ayre.

1841 Census
Hannah Hayre and family (Joseph 8) Bradford HO107 1292/10/ fo 10

William Hare Bradford Debtors Gaol HO107 1294/12 fo 13

1851 Census
William and Hannah Hayre (Joseph 18) Bradford HO107 2305 fo 223

1861 Census
William and Hannah Hayre Bradford RG9 3314 fo 9

William was born in Colne (not Cologne!) Lancs in 1805 the son of John and Betty Ayre

I suspect your spelling went back to Ayre when John died in 1864 and William was one of 7 siblings named in his will.

I descend from his younger brother Midgley born 1812. There is a place called Midgley in West Yorkshire but at one time there was a Doctor Midgley in Colne so that could be where the name came from.

John, the father was weaver who became a joiner and many of the family followed that trade. My grandfather Arnold Ayre born in 1886 was the fifth and last joiner in our line starting with John.

I started family history in the mid 70s and around 1980 I was put in touch with family in the USA we didn't know existed. Jonas, a brother of William and Midlgey, emigrated in 1857.
Since then my aim has been to fill out the generations to discover where all the families who descend. It was only when I had access to the Censuses that I was able to follow through William and his family.

I think this may be enough for a start!!

Maeve

I would appreciate further info on your Midgely Ayre (unusual name). I assume Midgely is the brother of Joseph, born c 1820 (Joseph Gearths Father). I was alos interesetd to hear that their Father was called William born in Cologne, Germany. Is that correct? I'd be grateful for any further info you have at all. I have my tree on here if you wish to look at it. Thanks.

Hello Robert
My 2x Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Ayre bn 1849 sister to your Isaac Ayre. Their father was Isaac Bedlington Ayre bn 1825 married to Ann Wilson.
Elizabeth married George McKenzie & had one child Charles Wilson McKenzie. Charles married Phyllis Ann Oliver in Hartlepool 1895. Their daughter Phyllis Mary McKenzie (married Frederick Cuthbertson in Hartlepool in 1920) was my grandmother.
I was born in New Zealand in 1955 and my grandparents, mother (Freda Cuthbertson) and sister Phyllis immigrated to NZ in late 1940's and early 1950's from Hartlepool. Two of the family remained in Hartlepool.

I would be interested in any information, especially earlier than Isaac Bedlington Ayre.
Hi

I'd be glad to help you out, but there are many AYRE families in the UK, most of which are not related. Do you know that there is a link with Devon?

I too am researching the Ayres in Peters Marland. My grandmother was Tryphena Ayre b.1871 in P M and she had 13 siblings that we know of.
Tryphena's parents were William Ayre b. <1823> in PM and Thirza Sanders b.1825.
William's father was William Ayre a farmer b 1793 who may have been married to an Ann Jewell.

Does any of this tie in with any of your family?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours

Carolyn Waite
