Hello Julie,

This is probably a bit of a long shot looking at the time span. I am the George Ayton mentioned above in Ian Hall's email. I too am descended from Robert Ayton and Elizabeth Ayton/Eighteen of Gissing. My great, great, grandfather was William Ayton 1812-1881. His son, Benjamin, moved to Teeside at the age of 18 in 1872/3. I have new information regarding Robert Ayton's parents and grandparents, if you are interested. I also helped Bill Ayton of California, USA with research for his book. If there's anything you want to ask please feel free to do so.

Best wishes,
George Ayton

I was searching for information about your ancestor because I have an old carte de visite done by him. I do not know who the photograph is and as my rellie left Fermanagh in 1855, presumably before Alexr. commenced business, maybe it was a photo of his brother which the brother posted to Australia.

Dr. Robert Alexander Aiton/ Son of Dr. Thomas Aiton

My grandmother was an Aiton. Her grandfather Dr. Thomas Aiton supposedly came to America from Scotland. We have Aiton's that settled for years in the southeast, Texas, and in Arizona. I am looking for someone who has info about either dr. or their desendents, or ancestors. We have lost alot of info because the early Aiton's had such large families and the younger children did not get the family bible or the important papers that the eldest child would have gotten. I am interested in family bibles and papers that can be copied on the ancestors of either Dr. Dr. Robert Alexander Aiton was born 1858 and died 1928 in Superior, Arizona. Thanks, Nancy Fees

Dear Stephen (and Hi Chris)

I have a little information on the Suffolk AITON/AYTONs in my one-name study of EIGHTEEN as some of my early ancestors are recorded as AITON or AYTON on Boyd or IGI. But I guess as yours appear to be Scottish, information about Hadleigh, Suffolk isn't likely to be immediately relevant.

Good luck hunting and best wishes

Julie Williamson
Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs

Since I posted that message I have found more references and his name was definitely Hophni. In 1859 he was a road surveyor, so he must have been fairly young when he came over. Also he came over with a married couple - Ann Ayton and Christopher Leggo. All I know about Ann was that she was born in England in 1793, and I am assuming she and Hophni are somehow related - perhaps sister and brother?

Cathy

Hello Minda!
So glad you found my posting.

Mattie (Martha A / P) Ayton was born 22 Apr 1866 in IL to Benjamin F Ayton (b. ca 1832, d. after 1880) and Orlenia T Laymar (b. ca 1833, d. after 1880). She died in 1952.

She married John Wilson Gowdy (Sr) (b. 22 Feb 1858 in USA, d. 01 Jan 1930) on 12 Nov 1891 in LeRoy, McLean County, IL.

I have recently made a fantastic find through a posting on another message board and was able to purchase the original wedding certificate, complete with wedding-dressed pictures of John and Mattie!! If you'd like I can email you a digital image of it--it's really quite remarkable!

I also have much handwritten reminiscences about your grandfather, John Wilson Gowdy (Jr). My mother-in-law lovingly took the time to pen bunches of family information for me, and as she is a most remarkable and intelligent woman herself, her writings are most engaging. I believe she would not mind me sharing her thoughts with you as she wrote everything in the spirit of passing on family history.

If you have any dates or family information about your father or what you know of your grandparents or great-grandparents, please consider sharing it with me. I'm compiling a family history to hand down to descendants (like you!). So too, if you can share family pictures, it would be wonderful.

You and my husband Dale are second cousins!

Let me hear from you!
Kate

Hi,
I found your posting when I was poking around on the web at work. My father is John Roger Gowdy who lives in Bellevue, WA. and is married to Judith Ellen Core.

My father's father is John Wilson Gowdy ("Bill") (deceased 1969) who was married to Florence Regina Sather (deceased 1997). They lived in Seattle, WA. Their two children were my father John Roger and his sister Carolyn Ann.

J.W. Gowdy's father was also named John Wilson Gowdy and he was married to Mattie P. Ayton.

So that means that my great grandparents are John and Mattie Gowdy. I'd be curious to know about Mattie P. Ayton. or her husband John Wilson Gowdy.
