Babcocks from Cornwall on the Hudson, NY

I am trying to track down my maternal grandfather's family. His name was Thomas Wilson Babcock b. 1926. He grew up in Cornwall on the Hudson, NY. His parents were Monroe and Catherine Babcock. I am not confident on their birth information but my brother's baby book has them as Monroe being born or from Haverstran, NY and Cathering (nee King) being born August 16, 1904 and from Cold Springs, NY. I appreciate anyone's help on this dead end for me.

Oliver Babcock, Yates County, New York

I'm trying to tie Oliver Babcock and Chloe Weller to Hannah Lucinda Babcock. I have Hannah's death certificate but it lists Mr Babcock as her father. I would also like to find Oliver's parents along with his birth place. I get conflicting data on which state he was born in, Vermont, N.H., R.I. and Mass.

He married Chloe 1823 in Washington County, New York. They arrived in Yates county about 1834. There were other Babcock's that arrived around the same time period but I cannot find any documented evidence of a relationship.

Oliver Babcock
Birth 18 Nov 1795 in Vermont, United States
Death Living
Death 9 Feb 1859 in Jerusalem, New York, USA
Chloe Weller
Birth 16 Aug 1803 in Fort Ann, Washington, New York, United States
Death Living
Death 30 Dec 1865 in Jerusalem, New York, USA
Children
Moses Treat Babcock
1825 – 1902
Marion Francis Babcock
1828 –
Arnold Babcock
1830 – 1909
Hannah Lucinda Babcock
1833 – 1905
Oliver Hammond Babcock
1834 – 1911
Desire Babcock
1836 –
Harriet Babcock
1838 –
Harry Babcock
1839 –
Anna Babcock
1841 –
Nancy Babcock
1841 –
Sorry her name stuck in my head because it was noted that she was the daughter of a general or colonel around the turn of the century. Late 1700's. Another wife's name I think was Suzanne but not certain.

I was researching land grants in Ontario for David and Benjamin Babcock. I was able to order the microfilm and view it at the library. Along with the land grants are letters written about the people including the fact that person guaranteeing the identity of the individual knew their family as parents names and wives names. It took several hours and I found great information but still don't know if they are connected to my Babcocks...

Using the Canada Archves website to look for Upper Canada land grants ...not Ontario, it didn't exist at the time...

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/upper-canada-la...

If you go here and use the name, Babcock it will pull up all the land grants available for Upper Canada...
Happy Hunting, theresa

Thanks for the advice, but they are definitely from Napanee, Ontario in Canada, not Indiana. Not only have I already tracked several generations back in Ontario, but my mother went back there with her parents to visit many times when she was a kid, so I know I was starting in the correct Napanee.

The other thing that might help in researching is that Ontario was Upper Canada or Canada West in the 1800s.
Happy Hunting!

Seeking info on this family-
Adelbert Hawthorne Babcock (went by A.H.) born in Bay City MI. He married Josephine Warren probably 1890's, maybe Ohio. They went to St Louis MO for a short time (probably for him to go to dental school), move to northern Ohio & back to Bay City between 1899-1907 range. They had a daughter Ruth, born 1898 in St. Louis.
Sometime between 1905-1908, A.H. & Josephine divorced.
A.H. went to Yonkers, NY with daughter Ruth. He was dentist there. Sometime around 1910-1920 he married a woman by the name of Persis and they are living there in 1920 & 1930.
Whatever happened to A.H. & Persis Babcock?
Whatever happened to daughter, Ruth Babcock?
First wife, Josephine, remarried in 1908 to Thomas Graff

David Babcock married Susan Michael in 1854. He and Susan had 4 or 5 boys (Wanza(or Wanzor), Ora, David Price, Ambrose, and Adam). I have Susan's information, but cannot find anything else on David Babcock.
Hi, I am very interested in the David Babcock who served with Captain Thomas Ward, because they lived in Bergen Point and Bergen Neck which are parts of Bayonne, NJ, and I a trustee of the Bayonne Historical Society, Inc. I would be happy to share what we know with you. Please feel free to either e-Mail me at Gerry.Nowicki@jpmchase.com or call me on 646-256-6607 after 5 PM weekdays or on weekends. David Babcock was involved in building block houses and a fort, and there is some archaeological work going on in Bayonne so he is of even more importance to us now than ever.

Gerry Nowicki
646-256-6607

James BABCOCK, 1612 to June 12, 1679, England to America

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Authur of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume 3.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Page 1561-63

JAMES BABCOCK
James Babcock immigrant ancestor, was born in England in 1612, probably in county Essex, and died June 12, 1679. The name is spelled in various ways, Badcock, Badcooke, Badcocke and Badcook. The early settlers used the spelling Badcock, which is the one in general use in England at the present time. The American family uses the spelling Babcock. James Babcock settled first in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and was admitted an inhabitant of the town February 25, 1642. He had a grant of land, and was admitted a freeman July 10, 1648. He was juryman several times, and assessor in 1650. He was on a committee in 1642 to see that all firearms were in repair. In 1655 he was on a committee to treat with the Indians, and on other important committees for the town. He was a member of the general court in 1657-58-59. He was on a committee to lay out highways and settle boundary lines in 1661. He removed to Westerly, Rhode Island, in March, 1662, and had lot 52 in the new town. His name appears on a petition to the general court for protection from the men of Southertown, Connecticut, an adjoining town. He was in constant trouble with the Pequot Indians, and was brought into court on a charge of driving them off their planting ground. In 1678 he was baptized by Elder William Hiscox, and united with the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Newport and Westerly. He made a nuncupative will to his sons John and Job, June 12, 1679, and they appeared before the governor of Rhode Island, September 17, 1679, and testified to the truth of the will. He married (first), Sarah ________, who died 1665; (second) Elizabeth ________, who married (second), September22, 1679, William Johnson. Children of first wife: 1. Elizabeth.

(II) John Babcock, son of James Babcock, born Portsmouth, Rhode Island, 1644, and died at Westerly, 1685. Tradition says that he and his wife eloped and settled upon the east bank of the Pawcatuck river. He was among the early settlers of Westerly, when he was about eighteen years old. He received the twenty-seventh lot, on the banks of the Pawcatuck, near what is now Avondale, Rhode Island. It is said that he was in the Great Swamp fight in King Philip's war, and he received land for his services in the war from the colony of Connecticut. His name appears in the Stonington militia. He was admitted a freeman of Connecticut in 1676, when that state claimed the town of Westerly. He was deputy to the general court in 1682-84. He died intestate and his estate was disposed of by the town council, June 25, 1685. He married Mary Lawton, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Hazard) Lawton, of Portsmouth. The man was valued at one hundred and fifty pounds. The will was proved February 22, 1741-42. He married Rebecca Stanton, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Lord) Stanton. She was born April, 1678, died July 5, 1747. Children: 1. Rebecca, died July 15, 1747; married _______ Ingraham. 2. Ann, married Enos _______. 3. Jemima, married Ichabod Babcock. 4.
George Milton Babcock --- Slade Genealogy ---Research Papers

In The Utah Genealogcial and Historical Magazine, volume VI: July 1915, pages 118-126. "A Branch of the Slade Family" was published by George Milton Babcock.

At the end of the article, Mr. Babcock states "The Slade genealogy was gathered during the years 1913-1914, wholly by correspondence with various members of the Slade family ... the genealogies [are] nearly complete of the descendants of each Slade girl mentioned above [in the article] ..." He hoped to publish "a complete genealogy in book form of the Slade Family of America".

Were the research papers/materials and the personal genealogical correspondance of George Milton Babcock deposited with a library collection?

Did Mr. Babcock publish a book on the Slade Family of America?

I am especially interested in his research on the Slade-Rowland families of Saratoga County, New York.

Any information for the existence and location of Mr. Babcock's papers will be greatly appreciated.

HI:

My ancestor is John Ketchum Babcock, born NJ in 1810. I am told that his father/gfather was also John (possibly Jacquett) a sea-captain in revolutionary war or 1812. Do you have any links here? I believe initially they were from mass.

Job Babcock

I found another Job Babcock. 0=James B. b. 1554; 1=James B. b. 1580; 2=James B. b. 1612; 3=James B. b. 1641, John B. b. 1644, Job B. b. 1646, and Mary B. b. 1648.
Job b. 1646 married Jane Crandall, c. John b. 1669, Elizabeth b. 1681, Benjamin b. 1673, Mary b. 1674, Jane b. 1675 m. James Braman, Mercy b. 1678, Girl b. 1679 m. William Tanner, Oliver ?, Sarah ?, Hannah ?, Mercy ?, Ester ?.
Job's brother John b. 1644 children had a lot of these names for his children so you have to adhere to birthdates closely. In fact, one listing I have shows John with wife's name Jane Crandall and also Mary Lawton. It may be that Jane left John to marry Job. Who knows. Requires more digging.

It looks as if we are talking about the same Jacob as he would be an uncle to your George Babcock. I don't have too much more info about this family but my e-mail address is trump@nhb.com if you would like to contact me.

I'm familiar with Jacob Babcock, born 1799, as my relative is his brother John Prince Babcock born 1801. He begat George, who begat my grandfather Jesse Babcock, born 10/22/1872 in Ontario, Canada. Part of the family moved to Greig New York, my grandfather moved to Ilion, New York and I was born of his son Alton. And yes, I believe Jacob and John Prince and the family were loyalists.

My husband's ggrandfather was Calvin Babcock. In the 1851 census for Camden East he and his wife, Jane, are listed as living with Jacob Babcock and his wife, Mary, along with Drucilla, Katherine, Margaret Ann and Harriet, children of Jacob and Mary. Jacob's sister, Sally Smyth, and her husband, Isaac, were visiting. I am trying to establish proof that Jacob was Calvin's father.
